1. The Bests r Still Here - The first time I heard passos' voice I though about earth. I don't mean THE earth, I mean that sort of dirt that's so rich and full of nutrients and minerals that you it's now called "earth", instead of dirt. Pairied with Carter's interestingly melodic and aggressive playing this record is probably my favorite of hers. It's the type of record that sounds as good, if not better, in your house as it would in a club. Buy this record!

2. Entre Amigos - Don't be put off by a few bossa nova chestnuts--this is a lyrical and wonderful album by "the female Joao Gilberto" and not-overrated jazz great Ron Carter, filled in with lovely guitar and clarinent. Carter's one weakness is that he sometimes dominates with an overrecorded. orotund bass tone. He keeps that in check here and functions as the best-possible accompaniest, taking only the occasional superb solo. You can put it on as soothing background music or listen as closely as you would like.

1. She is one of the BEST! Me eriza la piel - - I first saw and heard of this wonderful singer while watching the Latin Grammy’s this week. I was like who is this Buika? After reading about her on the net and watching her videos on "youtube" I was mesmerized by her talent, diversity of rhythms, energy, passion and sensuality. Her music transmits the kind of emotion I have not felt in a long time. Is not just flamenco, check out her other albums to hear her sing some wonderful jazz and club dance music as well. This woman rocks!

1. Wow...where you been Tito? - Ive always loved this old school salsa music, but could never really find a good collection of it. I loved old James Bond movies, instantly loved the vibe in San Juan when I first set foot on the island....who knows, maybe in my past life I was Cuban, all I know is as I stumbled across this link to this man and started playing the tracks I was floored by the richness and depth of each song on this CD...and I dont know a thing about him, but I downloaded the whole CD and look forward to chilling out on a Friday afternoon driving home with this blasting out the window as Spring approaches!

1. Nueva Vista - I bought this expecting Buena Vista Social Club, Pt . I couldn't have been more surprised... This album takes its cues from traditional Cuban music as much as it does from modern hip hop, dub, funk, jazz, and soul. Orlando Lopez is a talented bassist and has surrounded himself with some brilliant musicians (Hugh Masekela, Bigga Morrison, Pee Wee Ellis...) on this album. The results are stunning. Most songs are modal vamps or jams around a theme—like the homage to Charles Mingus on "Tumbao No ," where Lopez freaks CM's "Haitian Fight Song." Other standouts include the dubby "Redencion," the jazzy workout "Mis Dos Pequeñas" (replete with someone channeling jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli), the druggy dub piece "Tumbanga" (a song that would fit well on Thievery Corp's last disc) featuring the great Masekela on horn, and the soulful collabo with the late Ibrahim Ferrer on "Wahira." This is a great jazzy, funky, sometimes trippy, joyride. Highly recommended.

1. Flamenco meets Jazz!! - What a fantastic fusion of styles. The wonderful sound of Flamenco with one of its true masters, Pepe Habichuela, and Jazz standup Bass master Dave Holland. Every song is new and inventive, what a joy to listen to, and to share with others. The recording is great, you can feel as well as hear the joy in each musician. Highly recommended.

1. Great 's jazz! I especially love "Green Onions." - Great 's jazz! I especially love "Green Onions." These are all upbeat, percussion based tunes; some were popularized in other genre's then "jazzed" by Mongo. There is a Caribbean/Latin aspect to these tracks that just makes you want to dance ot them! Very upbeat. Even the "cool" tracks like "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" have that almost irrisistable call to the dance floor. I think you could sum this whole experience up in one word: fun!

1. Delicious, tender and right on the money - While there are plenty of wonderful efforts out there to bring Bossa Nova into the twenty first century by blending it with newer musical forms, Ana Caram accomplishes this here without compromising what made the music so appealing from the beginning: its purity; its tenderness; its effortless expression within a complex harmonic context. The arrangments are true to the music's acoustic roots, yet infused with a subtle yet virtuosic intensity. The vocal performances are heartfelt and confident. Ms. Caram has fully absorbed the lessons of her mentor Tom Jobim, and his spirit inhabits this music.

1. What Floor Please................... - I don't know what to call this music other than elevator music. It hardly sounds Bossa Nova or any other of the genres iTunes uses. And to use the Beatles music for such a down grade of what the Beatles were doing when they created this music. Imagine taking music that is so cool that it changed the sound of music all over the world and turning it into music I consider elevator music. An absolute disgrace!

1. A local fave but global gift - Ray Obiedo becomes one with his guitar when he performs and it shows. When he draws in talented musicians as he naturally does, the result is some amazingly great sound. Having seen Obiedo perform in big and small venues, he's always a gifted musician and one worthy of a listen.

1. A (Patho)logical progression ! - The other reviews are quite well spoken, so I will make address to those who are familiar w/ Señor Klein and his Grupo, as well the uninitiated. A long way grupo Los Guachos has come from the st release, El Minotauro", and the crazylouco composer/musician/vocalist Guillermo Klein has constructed his unique sound , which is mixing argentino/brasileiro popular and folcloric musics with lush voiced chords, and a vocal style that resembles João Gilberto after a particular successful night with the bottle! (like the famous song, 'O Bêbado E O Equilibrista', as the musics/compositions are 'well balanced', yet drunk, haha) , with sharp ensemble passages, the solo efforts, excelente mesmo! Jazz, so called, never sounded more unique. The influence of legend Hugo Fattoruso (from uruguai by brasil) is noticable in Los Guachos sound, intentional or coincidence, you have to ask to Sinhô Klein! But any who have heard Hugo in any incarnation, especially Airto Moreira's "Fingers" grupo will see connections! Much of this recording is with "odd time signatures" , as they say.. Miguel Zenon, the boricua tenor , and some interstellar post jazz fusion guitarra from Ben Monder add the excitement. Always one to honor great composers who have gone before us, This cd offers a "decomposition" of a work , the great classical composer Messian. (Previous recordings have featured musics from O Bruxo, Hermeto Pascoal). For those who do not like to mix their "jazz" with other influences, this NOT the recording for you. For the open minded and adventurous ears, this is sent from heaven. estrelas no ceu! viva grupo Los Guachos! (USA annexed version, many músicos from the states contributed this effort)

3. Fresh! - This is the most original and exciting jazz-related large ensemble music I've heard in quite some time. I say "jazz-related" because calling this just "jazz" would be limiting. Klein has come up with a sound world all his own. He has a great band full of strong and individual improvisers and players, but utilizes their soloing talents sparingly and only when it makes sense in the context of a particular piece. Several soloists, most notably Miguel Zenon on alto saxophone, get their chance to shine in selected spots. All of the musicians' own voices can be heard featured in Klein's melodies and voicings...he really writes for this particular group of individuals. In this release, Klein's gift for strong, memorable melodies has really come into focus much more so than in past releases of his.... check out "Yeso" in particular. He also has a way with catchy Latin and funk derived grooves in complex meters... check out "Miula" and "Snake" (also catch a memorable Bill McHenry solo on the latter). He has come up with a unique method to make it occasionally sound like the time is "stretching". Check this out on the transition sections of "Miula" and throughout most of "Luz de Luz" (Although "Luz" could use a little editing in spots....this is really the only slight mis-fire (imho) on a great cd. There is a beautiful piano/guitar duet towards the end of this track that sounds to me like bossa meets Steve Reich, however) Klein and Los Guachos have melded the sonorities of Duke Ellington, Wayne Shorter, contemporary classical music, Argentinian music and much more into an unforgettable and beautiful sound package all their own. Get this music now!

4. Catch up with Klein - Guillermo Klein is one of the most innovative and exciting composer/arrangers in improvised music. I've followed his career since the second Los Gauchos recording, and have yet to be disappointed. He has the ability to structure pieces so that every instrument is clear and engaging. The way he plays with rhythm, with canon-like countermelodies, and with lyrical ideas of memorable beauty all make his work highly recommended.

1. Just the right mood. - Tempo Rei does a great job of capturing the essence of cool in this album. The beautiful vocals are all at once melancholy, wistful and touching, but lend a freshness to some of the old bossa nova standards. The recording is nicely balanced between instrumental and vocal lines--clean, relaxed tempi. A very pleasant listening experience for fans of this style. The arrangements are nicely done and are charming because of their simplicity.

1. Madlib & Mamao...can't go wrong - the story of how this album was made is the story of how music should be made. A group of Hiphop (and beyond) musicians travels to far away Brazil, links up with musicians from Brazil, hang out, record, and make a classic album that breaks new ground...and they make enough money to keep creation's circle going. Buy this album so that artists like this can keep keepin on.

2. Keeping It Moving - So, Madlib goes with a bunch of friends to Brazil, where they meet with pioneering musical greats and new bloods alike. He befriends drummer Mamao and they make a beautiful piece of work together, as Mamao lends over an hour's worth of drums to Lib, or Otis Jackson. YOU SHOULD ALREADY KNOW THE DEAL-if not, once those drums were 'chopped and skewed' (i'm copywriting this) they decide to call the collaboration Jackson Conti. The rest is history, literally. Madlib continues to musically delve into obscure creativity only to re-emerge with Nguzo Saba or fresh fruit, harvested out of the most genius of places. Madlib is more Jazz troubadore than bedroom beatmaker and he shows us on this latest release, where he not only sequences, edits, programs, etcetera-But also accompanies Mamao's excellence with his own live musicianship. As his late great friend probably would have suggested "TURN IT UP"!

1. Hot horn blower aka Blowtorch... - This should be mainstream because it is smokin. Although it is at times repetative, this is a great album to have for those sexy events. I mean this guys shirt says it all. He is one of the better blowers of this decade. This man blew me out of my seat all night. As a matter of fact his name should be Eddie Blower in stead of Eddie Palmieri. Maybe I'm just sleepy and thinking of something else. Whatever the case pick this album up just because of his shirt. It's cool. .

1. Clearly in a special category - Sometimes when people find themselves limited by words to express themselves, unique and specific artists have been able to capture those provocative remarks in a special form. Gonzalo Rubalcaba has once again transcended boundaries with his insightful statements for us to explore. Fe' (Faith) brilliantly captures the gift of the international language for contemplation, which I will simply refer to as "music" for a reference point, since I too am limited by words. Passion partner Gary Galimidi, complements Gonzalo -- a master artist. This new partnership marks a different direction as much as history will reveal how iCloud will change computers. Thank you for sharing your unique gift.

2. From MainlyPiano - Jazz pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba has appeared as leader on more than twenty-five critically-acclaimed albums, but "Fe ... Faith" is his first release on his own Passion label. The album features fifteen piano solos that range from introspective musings to flamboyant bursts of pianistic energy. The sound quality of this impeccably-recorded album is crystal-clear without being harsh or overly bright, allowing the listener to hear all of the nuances in Rubalcaba’s playing, from the piano pyrotechnics to the subtle pedal shadings. The Cuban-born Rubalcaba received his early training in classical music, leading to his degree in music composition from Havana’s Institute of Fine Arts in . He has been credited with fifteen Grammy nominations, including five for Jazz Album of the Year. He continues to tour the world as a solo pianist in jazz and classical settings as well as band leader in club and concert engagements. It is very clear from this music why Gonzalo Rubalcaba is considered by many to be one of contemporary music’s most compelling artists. Several of the fifteen tracks have more than one version on the album, none of which are presented in consecutive order. “Derivado ” serves as a -second prelude - a series of chords, the last of which are held until they fade out. “Maferefun Iya Lodde Me” has a simple, gentle rhythm that accompanies the more fluid and free-form right hand as it dances on the keyboard, maintaining a cool, meditative mood throughout. “Improvisation ” and “” are based on John Coltrane’s style and pay tribute to the jazz icon. “Derivado ” is a reharmonized expansion of the first fragment that creates an other-worldly atmosphere by utilizing silence, overtones, and the piano pedals. “Con Alma ” and “” are versions of Dizzy Gillespie’s classic song. Both are slow, dark, and incredibly beautiful. “Blue in Green” by Miles Davis and Bill Evans also has two versions, and both are gorgeous explorations the masterpiece - dark and brooding yet passionate. For me, the highlight of the album is a suite of three pieces dedicated to each of Rubalcaba’s three children. “Joan” seems quite reflective, adding playful, innocent moments couched in a father’s love. “Joao” was composed for Rubalcaba’s son, and describes a soulful boy who perhaps alternates between melancholy and a sense of adventure. “Yolanda Anas” is the sweetest and most graceful of the three pieces. Sometimes dreamy and sometimes giggling and fun, it’s my favorite track. “Derivado ” concludes the trilogy, fading out and bring the album to a close. If you have an ear for jazz piano with an edge, be sure to check this one out!

3. Number one pianist..... - I'm a big fan of all kinds a music. When I listen to classical jazz, Gonzalo has the talent to place him at the top of his category. Every time I listen and watch him play, he does something different and magical on the keyboard that only he can do. One of, if not the best pianist in the world!

4. One of the Best Jazz Musicians Ever..... - This man is amazing..... Many musicians hit a certain stage of development and go no further. This album is such a revelation. Gonzalo is know for his hard work and dedication. It's obvious.....Gonzalo continues to mature and develop as if he were on a mission. What is becoming clear here is that he is successfully melding jazz, latin AND CLASSICAL styles and themes like a master chef mixing eclectic ingredients for a savory and unique stew..... We all know he has chops like few others, but the taste, the depth, the touch is blowing me away. I challenge you to listen to "Blue in Green " in a darkened room with your eyes closed. (This is a scary experiment). I started to have visions of Evans and Miles in the studio in , especially toward the end where Gonzalo plays the original intro..... "Joan" is a gorgeous piece, and is another tasty mix of modes and styles. "Preludio Corto" is where Gonzalo shines in his ability to take a classical piece and add his jazz vibe. This piece is cinematic, reminding me of grand old "Film Noir" tragedies , perhaps "The Picture of Dorian Gray"..... People..... It's time we give this man the respect he deserves. We have marginalized him long enough. Time to trash the unfair, unfounded, and untrue allegations about his politics advanced by other jealous Cuban's..... many of whom have a REAL closet full of sins..... People.....It's time to be smart..... Last I checked his parents are alive and well in Cuba.... Meanwhile forget politics, and DIG THIS MAN'S MUSIC !!!!!
P.S. This album is released by Gonzalo's own Label. How cool is that.... God Bless You Gonzalo Rubalcaba..... Un Abrazo!!!

1. Smooth And Easy - This is an easy album to like. Throw in a few bossa standards and some effortless playing and the mood is set. I’ve dabbled in bossa albums for a while and keep coming back to this one as one of my favorites. This is “easy” jazz; no awkward chords or wild atonal meanderings, and you could argue it is a little too unchallenging at times: Adderley was certainly jumping on the bossa bandwagon of the time. But for a mellow mood, strong melodies and flawless playing this can’t be beat. There really isn’t a bad track.
