1. A link in time - Just before many things happened in (my) life, this was here. For me it is a reminder of that. To be visited, celebrated, and vaulted, but with a key. The revisiteing in memory is like a wind whispering from gusts now forgotten and remnants of echoes resound. It was a unique time, possibly considence, but dear nevertheless. Happy to have finally found you again.

2. Highest Recommendation-Do Not Even Hesitate-Buy Now! - I first heard Santaolalla on "The Insider" soundtrack (another must have if you're also a fan of Lisa Gerard's singing). I HAD to find more of GS' music. Ronroco is extraordinary. As the previous reviewer mentioned GS' music is transcendent, profound, enveloping, & transforms your mental, physical, emotional & spiritual states just by listening to it. Give yourself the best gift ever. Go to a comfortable place, shut off your phone, put on your headphones, & just listen.

3. Hauntingly brilliant - This album is composed of some of the most unique guitar that I've heard. Mellow, soothing yet somehow pleasantly discordant. It evokes a different South America, modern but with ancient and mixed roots. Some of the tracks keep calling you back to listen, time and again. Not only is this album a jewel, this artist is a treasure. Please give it a listen.

4. Subtly sizzling - This album includes everything one could want from a classical guitar performer. It can serve as background, unabtrousive and conducive to thought and concentration. Or, it can easily be listened to, concentrating on each track's complexity, simpicity of sound, and emotional strength. Due to hearing Santaolalla's compositions in Brokeback Mountain, I purchased this album. Now, after listening to this album, I'm going to purchasea the soundtrack from Brokeback Mountain. Santaolalla is a musical genious.

5. Stunning - As an Argentine, I am always trying to find music that puts some kind of modern spin on my country's folklore. Gustavo Santaolalla does indeed provide just that in this album much as he did in the soundtrack to The Motorcycle Diaries. Definitely soothing, especially being so far from home right now.
2006-03-06
6. Brilliant! - This CD is eloquent in its approach to the classic folkloric sounds of Argentina. Santaolalla blends the simple music and instrumentation of the Andes with a new, beautiful - modern feel. You cannot help but but feel raapture listening to Gaucho, Atacama, and De Ushuaia a la Quiaca. A must buy for anyone wishing to touch the beaty of Argentina through sound.

7. Hauntingly Beautiful Music - I fell in love with Gustavo Santaolalla's hauntingly beautiful music on the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack. This CD gives him a chance to show an even broader range. His compositions have great depth even though he uses simple intruments. A few of the tracks tend to meander, but as a whole this CD is a great listening experience. I would highly recommend it.

1. She is one of the BEST! Me eriza la piel - - I first saw and heard of this wonderful singer while watching the Latin Grammy’s this week. I was like who is this Buika? After reading about her on the net and watching her videos on "youtube" I was mesmerized by her talent, diversity of rhythms, energy, passion and sensuality. Her music transmits the kind of emotion I have not felt in a long time. Is not just flamenco, check out her other albums to hear her sing some wonderful jazz and club dance music as well. This woman rocks!

- There's no way to describe this album, it's just AMAZING.
I'm a guy who listens normally to other kinds of music, specially indie/alternative pop-rock, but always keeping my mind open, because I feel in the end that music, is music.
Well this is not an easy listen, boleros are sad, melancholic and sometimes u re not in that mood, or u think u re not.
They talk about broken hearts, about people who lost everything. But they are just beautiful.
Buika is a black spanish woman, who's parents are originary from Senegal, she is a very smart and nice person.
She has not only an incredible beautiful broken voice but also a extremely big talent to sing this difficult kind of music, and I say difficult because most of singers who try to sing this kind of music normally they don't transmit nothing, they sing like they were singing any other thing, and this music needs a deep soul and a big brain.
Some times u can feel in the air a flavor to Chavela Vargas who has been the biggest singer of boleros ever, but she does not try to copy her, it's just that she feels so well this music that it comes to a level similar to the great Costarican singer.
Although this is a fresh breeze for this type of music and the boleros are just awesome, JUst listen las simples cosas, is the most beautiful song ever. I don't know who was the writer but is just awesome, I think the first singer was Mercedes Sosa. It's like a poem from Machado or Joan MAragall.

1. Passion, Grace, and Fire Indeed!! - A milestone in acoustic guitar work. It blends the three very different styles of playing by De Lucia, Di Meola and McLaughlin. It shows the evolution that took place after touring with the Friday Night in San Francisco material, which is less intricate and developed. In this album the compositions are simply astounding, ranging from the progressive jazz rock and hindu influence of McLaughlin to the intense and magical flamenco textures of DeLucia. Di Meola contributes with two of his most beautiful melodies. Contrary to what some people say, the three guitarists are playing on an equally high level, each one in his own style, there is no "greater" guitarist here... they are beyond that. A definite MUST in the collection of acoustic guitar lovers!

2. Only bucks for one of the all time classics?!!! - This is one of the greatest guitar albums ever recorded. Listen to how Al has total control of his playing going from super slow into super fast lines. And all done with incredible emotion and melodic sensibility. Let me just also throw in that somehow a lot of guitarists have gotten it into their heads that John is better than Al. Contrair!! When heard side by side, Al is clearly the greater of the two. Buy this thing. What a deal!!!

1. Yes, you should have this music - Every world music collection should have the enchanting voice of a fadista such as Mariza. I first heard her music while eating dinner in an outside cafe in Toulouse. Every time I hear her voice, I am transported back to an evening under the stars with a glass of Bordeaux and romance in the air. (sigh) Yeah, Mariza does that to a person.
2008-10-12
2. Beautiful - I saw her in Walt Disney Hall (Los Angeles) in October .. My favorite songs are not form this album, but any album is absolutely stunning. When I saw her at Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles, she just captured the crowd. Everyone was paying attention and following her. Everyone was silent as she sang, and ecstatic when she finished. She did an encore !! Amazing album, and not expensive.

3. Transparente - Mariza; is Fado to me she takes one to heights of musical rapture as no one else signing on this earth has been able to! I cannot wait to see her in New York again, however, I also hope to see her in concert in Portugal when I go over to visit! I cannot get enough of her because she sings with such passion. Brian R. Parris

4. Magnificent!!! - This woman's voice gives me chills, and that's saying alot. I just saw her live at the Hollywood Bowl, and she sounds even more amazing live. You will be so happy you bought this album...her voice takes you to a place of beauty and emotion that I have never heard before. She is a true superstar - talented, graceful, humble and beautiful. In a world full of canned singers and pitch correction, Mariza is the real deal, singing from her heart and soul, and she doesn't need a computer to make her any more amazing than she already is. Fado fado!!!!

5. Mesmerizing vocal skill and interpretation. - Mariza proves herself to be a superlative Fadista. She conveys all aspects of Fado, from soulful yearning to playfull abandon, with complete conviction and musical mastery. Her gorgeous voice has strength, agility and poignancy. Her sound is both rich and lyrical, full of passion and musicality. Her powerful voice, dramatic edge and impeccable intonation completely sweep you into the poetry of fado.

6. Mariza, Mariza, Mariza... - Mariza is a gifted fadista. Her voice captivates and her precense invites you to be part of her music, feelings. I saw her in Washington, DC in concert and she was amazing. She is very elegant and knows how to please the audience - she performed for two hours non-stop. I can't wait see her again and I am looking forward to more of her music. If you are looking add a fado album to your music collection, stop here and buy Mariza's Transparente.

1. Mriza (the new Amalia) - Mariza's music if by far the best i have ever heard. I was never interested in "fado" music until i heard her beautiful voice. Since then, never stopped listening. Being born American and raised in NJ. My parents were both born in Portugal, and my mom raised in Africa. As well as Mariza. Keep on Mariza, Keep on!!!
2008-12-09
2. Par excellence. . . - Mariza's first album accentuates her unique style, superlative voice and fantastic control and really evokes the haunting qualities of the fado. Mariza is the new Amalia, an exemplar of the fado and witha voice that few people in any genre can match. This should be a cornerstone of any serious music collection. Do see her in concert if you can.

3. Twins??? in voice speaking - I was so confused when I heard Mariza voice, I thought I was still listening to Amalia Rodigues, wow, a new fresh voice, but with all the experience of the past artists, I am in love with this artist, being born in Portugal yet raised in the United States, I'm falling in love with this type of music. Amalia Rodrigues was the type of music my parents listened too, but I am falling in the same foot steps yet with a younger artist. Congratulations to the world, for having a brite and fresh artist!!!

2. Thank You!!!! iTunes for Buika - Been waiting for Concha since I saw her for the first time in Jesus Quintero "El Loco de La Colina" TV show. It was a pleasure to hear and listen to Buika’s voice, such a great, sweet and harmonious voice. I have been looking all over for Concha since that day. MI NIÑA LOLA is a wonderful song.
2007-12-28
3. A Revelation! - It took a year for this album to make it to the U.S. and it is certainly worth the wait. Concha Buika is a singer with power, style and emotion and the ability to use them all. She handles flamenco, bolero, and jazz balads reminiscent of Nina Simone with equal aplomb. Definitely music for romance and truly addicting. Once you listen, you will want more. Hopefully it will come soon.

1. Conceto Em Lisboa - I first heard Mariza, life in concert in Phialdephia. I had never heard Fado, nor do I speak Portugeuse. I was moved to tears by the music and clearly caught up in the emotional "swell" of whatever she was singing about. It was beautiful. She lead me to explore other singers such as Buika, who I saw this year and Sara Tavares. This album is a stunning introduction to the beauty of this music and I can highly reccomend it to my English only speaking acquaintances.

2. Rebirth of Fado - As a Brazilian and admirer of this wonderful style, which is a bit of longing, a bit of cry, mourn, much of the sea (Portuguese sea, as mentioned by Fernando Pessoa) and also "saudade", I was overwhelmed when I first saw Mariza on stage. She's undoubtedly the direct heir of the great Amália Rodrigues and the living proof that fado will still be vivid and vibrant for generations to come.

3. Mariza is authentic... a treasure - Never heard of fado, before seeing Mariza live in Burlington, Vermont. I read another reviewer's comment that her singing made him cry... that about sums it up. I don't understand Portugese language, except for the few words that are explained before, and during, the concert. I felt the music and Mariza's voice so deeply. Perhaps not a perfectly appropriate analogy, but my feeling after the concert was that I had just heard the Portugese Piaf....

4. Fabulous!!! - I actually bought this cd in Lisbon in , I am very lucky to have a Portuguese born mother! This album represents the essance of Portuguse people, remembering the past, and looking forward to the future. Portugal is so beautiful it makes me cry! Fado music will touch you whether you understand the language or don't, I am very lucky to be fluent in Portuguese! In my opinion the most beautiful of all the romance languages, and I speak French! My dad is from Quebec!!!

1. Excellent Album! - Afro Peruvian music is beautiful and so full of life. I grew up listening to most of these songs during my childhood and they'll always hold a special place in my heart. Visit Peru if you have the opportunity, you will not regret it. This is just a tiny glimpse of what my beautiful country has to offer. Que viva Peru!!

2. Beautiful Music - This is MUST have music - but only a beginning! It represents a wonderful adventure in discovering the African presence in Peru. For those who would love Afro Peruvian music, you must go deeper to acquire Lucha Reyes, Lucila Campos, Los Embajadores Criollos, Nicomedes Santa Cruz, Peru Negro, Susana Baca, and others. This a blend of Africa, Spain, and some Indian culture which is unique in Latin America. Enjoy.

3. Partial review - I did not download the whole album. I did download Canterurias and Azucar de Cana. Canterurias is wonderful for evening or dinner music. Azucar de Cana is a little more lively and adds a more festive tone to any occasion. I rated both songs stars. This style of music may remind you of Celia Cruz, though I'm sure a more trained ear notes differences.

1. Marbles - I saw him play a number of times in the s. The original Mahavishnu lineup, The One Truth Band, Shakti, etc. I have most of the work on this set, but I don't have Marbles. That's the first tune that caught my attention via a local college radio station back in the day. I wish it was available as an individual tune, and not "album only". :(

2. ::jazz-fusion:: - i know that this can be argued a thousand times over, but if you are interested in discovering what the term "jazz-rock" is all about, then finding this release truly is "essential." it is, in my opinion, perhaps THE paramount example of the fusion genre. of course people will tell you all about the certain classics, (like those of miles davis and all of his extensive alumni, as well as jaco pastorius, jeff beck, steely dan, herbie hancock, tony williams, jack dejohnette, john scofield, brian auger, and various collectives like weather report, mahavishnu, trio of doom, headhunters, cream) or touch even on the quirks of (frank zappa, guru guru, jean-luc ponty, amon duul II, bela fleck, faust, jane, and even certain santana and hendrix references) as well as note the modern scene (that includes the likes of galactic, charlie hunter, medeski martin and wood, benevento-russo, jaga jazzist, greyboy, james taylor, tortoise and soulive). but all those expenditures and literally THOUSANDS of related musical moments aside, i feel like listening to pieces like spectrum, marbles, right off, rawalpindi, a love supreme and others on this album is the perfect way to represent what it is to be "jazz-rock." there are beautiful moments, as well as straight-ahead intense rockers, and even after times like the -min edit of right off, i felt myself only wishing for more. i'm not sure why i felt the need to write so much here, as the extensive official review is really all you need. while listening, words that come to mind definitely include funky, knotty, fused-out, burners, rockers, etc. start here, start now.

1. Eco De Sombras - When I experienced Susana Baca in a small intimate gathering in west hollywood in , I never have forgotten her voice and her performance. Thank you and Bravo to the rare performer, Susana Baca.

1. Original Soulful Powerhouse of a Voice - There are many "pretty" voices but few voices like Buika's that stretch to express the depth of soul and human emotion. Her canto jondo Flamenco expresses the pain and longing of the human heart. Her Tangos are sung with the intensity they deserve and traditional Cuban music with the synchopation and playfulness of a follower of Celia Cruz. One album cannot possibly capture the breadth and depth of Buika's range of talent and I look forward to a new release. Otherwise, be grateful if you see her perform life....

1. Wow. - So, in response to the previous review, Susana Baca has recorded several albums since this one, and most have been published in the US through Luaka Bop records, run by David Byrne, of Talking Heads fame. I just saw her perform last night, and I have to say that it was an amazing experience. She tours with a quartet - herself on vocals, a guy who plays Guitar and Charango (he plays an Ayacucho style Charango), a Bass player, and a Percussionist. There were no fewer than three Cajóns on the stage, and the Percussionist made a point of playing both the Cajita and the Quijada de Burro during the show. Susana made a point of recognizing Chabuca Granda at several points during the show, saying in Spanish, that they had recorded a couple of albums in Perú, one dedicated to her mother, Carmen, and one dedicated to her mother, Chabuca. Despite a lot of the material being different (she did perform "Molino Molero" and "Negra Presentuosa"), this album, of her many, may best represent the live experience.

2. SUSANA BACA - THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MUSIC YOU'VE NEVER HEARD!!! IF SUSANA BACA NEVER MADE ANOTHER ALBUM AFTER THIS ONE, HER PLACE IN MUSICAL HISTORY WOULD BE ASSURED. NEVER HAVE I HEARD SUCH BEAUTIFUL, MEANINGFUL, AND RELEVANT MUSIC! HER VOICE IS INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL, AND HER BAND DOESNT MISS A BEAT, THE SENSATION WAS AS IF I HAD FINALLY RECONNECTED W/MY AFRICAN ROOTS. AND WHAT BEAUTIFUL ROOTS THEY ARE. SHE FIRST CAME TO MY ATTENTION THROUGH LINK TV(CHANNEL FOR DIRECT TV). THEY HAD A HR BIO SKETCH OF HER LIFE AND MUSIC AND TOUCHED BRIEFLY ON THE HISTORY OF AFRO PERUVIANS. HER POETIC BEAUTY AND HER CONNECTEDNESS TO HER HISTORY MADE ME SO PROUD OF WHO WE ARE AS A PEOPLE, TO HAVE USED OUR MUSIC TO TRANSCEND THE BRUTAL REALITY OF OUR KIDNAPPING, BRAINWASHING, AND ENSLAVEMENT. THIS ALBUM IS INFUSED WITH DEEP AFRICAN SPIRITUAL MEDICINE, AND I RECOMMEND THAT YOU LISTEN TO THIS ONE WHEN THE WORLD DENYS YOUR RIGHT TO BE (DAILY). I DONT EVEN SPEAK THE LANGUAGE AND YET I AM TRANSPORTED BY A STRENGTH AND BEAUTY THAT I HAVE NEVER IMAGINED! THIS ONE'S A KEEPER. SUSANA, WE LOVE YOU! YOU ARE IN OUR PRAYERS! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

1. Breathing new life into tango - Hugo Diaz plays a sizzling harmonica that breaths new life into tango standards—golden age and nuevo. These inspired interpretations of tango music are not necessarily the favorite of dancers, but make for great listening. Dancers are challenged by the changing tempos and suspended harmonica riffs. But Diaz is first and foremost a harp virtuoso, interpreting music that crosses over several genres. This album is a favorite amoung tango afficionados.

2. Powerful, expressive, unique - Its too bad Teacher was fixated on bandoneon and short intros. There's more to this music than whether its good for dance class. Hugo Díaz plays harmonica with his whole body, and the effect can be guttural but vocal, explosive but lyrical, always heartfelt. Many of these tracks were used in the soundtrack to The Counterfeiters (Oscar winner, Best Foreign Language Film, ).

2. how does anyone pay for this - her politics aside, she is so off beat and out of tune that it seems as if she is a bad example of an audition of american idol, and i can't stand american idol. Her polititcs similar to her songs are cheap unlike her albumn. what a waste i was looking for somehting revolutionary;

1. Piazzolla collectible - if you're going to collect Piazzolla, then this is one for your collection. Nonesuch Records provides excellent sound, true to the actual instrument sound of bandoneon by Piazzolla. This recording is short enough for commute listening and if you're just learning to TANGO, the first cut "Tango Apasionado" is a great way to start those steps "to the side, to the back, count one count two and follow". If you have a chance to see TANGO performed, then look forward to the steps in cut "Bailongo". It'll have you panting just watching!

1. Noche Flamenca - Killer Music - I had never listened to flamenco before and came across this music by accident when I was given two tickets to an Austin Guitar Society recital. I was blown away by the intensity. This CD is the best I have come across in my quick search for music and I use it to work out to because when I am really putting the watts down, it takes my mind away from the pain and puts me in another place. I wish I could play a guitar like that. Go Roger! And not to dismiss the previous comment about sounding like its in a barrel, but being in a hall with a stage sounds can sound that too. I felt I was listening to a LIVE recording.
