1. Hard to follow - The constant shuffling between time periods and interlaced stories made for difficult reading. I really enjoyed all the backstory of various characters etc, but feel the title of the book is misleading. I wanted to go on a mental safari but instead had to fight through to the finish.

2. Incredible story - I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author, Grann, had researched Fawcett and all the other explorers who traveled with him. So much interesting information about South America, the geographical areas, the various Indians that inhabit the countries, the cultures, and the race between the countries and various explorers to not only map the Amazonian region, but to find a lost city in a quest for fame, glory and wealth.

3. Not all that interesting - I really liked "Collapse" and "Born to Run" and was hoping to learn something about nature and human hardships but this book focused more on exploring the main character's emotional toll he put on himself, his family, and his expeditioners. The last chapter was very fascinating however.

1. The Lost City of the Monkey God - This review has nothing to do with the book itself. Now please don’t discard this review. It has to do with the pricing of the book. In one place you have $. and in another it is $.. But yet it is called a special. Please make up your mind and let your customers know what price we are to pay. I really wanted to read this book more than any other. But I really want to know how much I will pay for it. Thank you for your time, Carin M.

2. Disappointing - What a bummer. This book starts as a fabulous adventure story every bit as good as Treasure Island, except that it's true making it even better. Just when some real discoveries are made, and you're thinking you'll stay up all night to finish the book, it crashes to a banal narrative. I kept reading hoping the exciting narrative would return, but it never did. Instead there is a discussion of the disease the explorers contracted in the jungle which is about as much fun as listening to the lady's bridge club talk about their gallbladder operations. This is used as a segue to trite moralizations . Interesting things like details of discoveries at the site never appear. Save your money

3. The lost city of the monkey God - Extremely well written. Story line was laid out with care to chronology. History was wonderful. Adventure attention holding. Medical saga re leash is worth the pice of admission"
Although the vector-spread of the disease was attributed to global warming the author wisely did not assign "blame" or causation exclusively to man's occupation of Earth.
Though Preston's ideological views were made evident in his summation, they did not do damage.
This book should be a must read--for enjoyment, edification, and education!

4. Intriquing does not give it justice - I read all of Douglas Preston novels and the books he is a joint writer of but had not read a non fiction one that he had written. This book was very well written and documented. It was extremely thought provoking. I am fascinated with rare viruses and the like so this book provided an extra bonus for me with Douglas covering Leishmaniasis. Very thought provoking. If you have any desire to learn more about long past societies and their archeological history then you will thoroughly enjoy this book. It is very well written and one that I could not put down. Thank you Mr Preston for taking the reader on a fascinating journey.

5. Not worth the read - Not worth the read. Really. If you want the story of this legendary "lost" city (which is remarkable), just go to YouTube or Wikipedia. This book is just the author's rendition of his experiences on the search. He did a good job covering the history of prior expeditions, but Wiki has that covered as well.

1. One of the best books I have ever read. - If you didn't know who cortez was you would think this is one of the most exciting adventure thrill rides you've ever read. I read the entire book in days, couldn't put it down. It's been years since I read it and I still think about this book more than any I have read since. If you like history and the feeling of being on the edge of your seat, get this book.

1. The Path Between the Seas - I found this book to be an exhaustive history of the Panama Canal and reading it was exhausting. The depth of research and analysis of the multitude of issues and personalities is impressive. Where I find fault with this book is the fact that the author refers to many important geological details throughout the book, and provides only two very small, postage stamp sized maps. One was virtually impossible to read. The photographs provided are of very poor quality and again too small to be useful. An online search brought up a number of excellent photographs taken during construction of the canal. Mr. McCullough also goes into great detail in describing a variety of mechanical structures, such as the machines used for digging the canal, pouring the concrete and the structure of the locks but provides no photos or diagrams. I found this like reading the mechanical description of an engine or transmission with no diagrams or photos to enhance the readers understanding.

2. Greta history - Most people know that the USA built the Panama Canal. But how many know of the work that was done prior to the US taking over the project.
Lots of detail of the many different engineering, medical, organizational and geological hurdles that were over come - just to get started.
A great history of a major human endeavor that had such a major impact on society. In many ways, a triumph that even stands above the Apollo moon missions.

1. Deep Down Dark - What a phenomenal story of the Chilean miners who were trapped underground for days. This book was chosen for our book group. It was so inspiring to read about these ordinary people who survived , feet below ground through their teamwork, faith, and the extraordinary people who worked above ground
to rescue them.

2. Deep Down Dark - Compelling and riveting account of the Chilean miners trapped for days in the San Jose mine. I couldn't put the book down. It's a deeply personal and spiritual account of what it feels like to face death and then miraculously survive and try to return to a prior way of life. Extraordinary story. Highly recommend.

3. Deep Down Dark - This Novel is humbling, miraculous & well written. Upon reading it I felt I was there with the miners during their ordeal. This account of their experience & journey back to normalcy with their families above ground, has honored each individual miner. A captivating and amazing story. Thank you.

1. Refreshing - This book reminds me of my forgotten roots. Although, I may have come from a different culture, I am still cultured. I can relate to the stories in this book and understand how European imperialism has affected us all. Yet, the author is inspirational and gives a sense of hope. Loved it!

1. Vivid Andean History - Well worth reading as a compliment to a visit to the Peruvian Andes. Macquarie ties together many stories of the Inca region, Cusco, Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Machu Picchu and onward downriver and to the northwest of this area. In fact, it ties together Lima and much of the rest of modern day Peru turning sightseeing into an education (really a wonderful way to travel). Politics, history, culture, cartography, cuisine, language wrapped up into a gift for the wanderer.

2. A sad but fascinating story - I read the printed version of this book and it was beautifully written and riveting. It tells a story of how several dozens of Spaniards vanquished a huge and mysterious empire. the characters are drawn vividly and the sequence of events are hard to put down the book. Some chapters are difficult to read due to the hopelessness and misery of the Inca people. If you are a history buff you will mightily enjoy reading it.

1. The Big Truck That Went By - A great read on three levels. There is the personal level that is told in raw reaction to the mass destruction all around him, with the ability to see small flashes of humor needed to keep his head and report as objectively as possible the horror unfolding.
There is the clear headed historic presentation how Haiti came to be in it's current state. And lastly, the huge shortsightness of how developed nations aid the poorer nations in general and specificly in Haiti. The mistakes made that left Hati in worse shape than before the earthquake (in spite of world wide donations of historic porportion). The book will inevitably raise questions about how we "help" the developing world. Worth the read!

1. A must read! - When Matt Restall writes on this topic, everyone with an interest in the European encounter with the Americas and its indigenous peoples must read what he has to say. He is arguably the most important scholar working in the area. Besides prodigious scholarship, he brings a questioning attitude and a non-standard perspective to the topics he explores. This contribution to the literature of the encounter will quickly be foundational to the field.

1. Eye Opening - This was a crazy book to read. I knew that the drug war in Mexico was bad and all, but I had no idea of the inner workings. Some of the ideas presented here are interesting as well. Something has to give, and hopefully there will be some sort of peace soon. Overall I recommend this book to anyone hoping to get a true and inside look into the drug trafficking world.
