1. Not very personable, so sample first - There is a great adventure inside this book. Amazing landscapes and immense human experience. But there is some genuineness that lacks at times. It seems the author tried to write about her trip after having returned back but with no on-ground notes at all to refer back to. In writing with retrospective, the author falls behind to keep the reader on the bike journey and goes away from the bike trip with her musings. There is a definite snobbery in this book to sound and read great at the expense of honesty.

2. Could be half the length - Interesting story no doubt, but the author is rather self-aggrandizing about her academic career at UNC Chapel Hill, Oxford, and MIT. It’s of course very impressive but there are countless dozen or more page detours throughout the book as she ponders life, philosophy, and science. It seemed like a bunch of look-at-how-philosophical-I-am ramblings at times.

1. JC Hernandez - Bought book exactly week ago and read it all despite extremely busy week. Born in Tijuana and raised in San Diego, visited Mexico City several times since "mi papa crecio alli." As a fellow "pocho", felt instant connection to author and was familiar with places, landscapes, vernacular and cultural habits brought so to life by D.H. I could literally see, feel, hear and smell Mexico City. Made me Nostalgic.... I will recommend this book (already have) to anyone who enjoys reading. What a powerful and insightful book! 1. Some useful info, some filler - I found the first quarter of the book offered a general introduction to the natural and human history of the Galapagos. It read easily and kept my interest with a few nice photos. The maps are an important feature as well, but they are a little crowded and confusing. The description of the islands from a touring perspective got repetitive. Additionally, I found most of the second half of the book to be filler. Spanish words and phrases can be found elsewhere for free and the general info about ecotourism, though important, seemed unrelated to the Galapagos specifically. Overall, I think the price of the book should have been about half what I paid, reflecting the value it offers.
