1. Absolutely infuriating, disgraceful racism perpetrated by whites for greed selfish gain - I knew prior to embarking upon this true crime terrorization and obliteration of innocent, kind and gross systemic racism and xenophobic violence and slaughtering of an entire population of the indigenous communities tribes and clans all over the country of which the European white colonists were so terrifyingly brutal, psychotic and done out of greed, selfishness and the need to remain powerful in a confused state of insecurity, fear, ignorance and sadly those vile traits and actions weren’t shameful enough for all the generations thereafter didn’t find themselves haunted by the transgressions and homicidal marauding their ancestors did out of selfishness, pride, ignorance and deep seeded superiority over anyone who didn’t conform to their values beliefs or cultural norms and traditional social structures. Worse off were those whose appearance was startling opposite, not having any sort of similarity but more differences in their appearance, body structure, language, culture, lifestyle and social norms. The ignorance of the whites who came to a heavily populated and very heavily established landmass that wasn’t in need of discovering, having been born from ancestors who’d existed in their traditional land locations, where they held their prayers and offerings and held gatherings within their own tribe and with those who lived in the surrounding villages. It was clear these tribes didn’t have any violent, hostile or vengeful intentions nor emotions towards their neighboring tribes, they knew only to fear the WHITE man who was only sort who’d come to their land and created any dissension, manipulation or violently threatened, attacked and murdered their extraordinarily healthy, happy and extremely peaceful peoples who’d populated their own territories some in figures. Knowing that a fraction of these hearty tribes were left when the their murderers and violent perpetrators were done slaughtering them after they’d run them from all their possessions, the lands and natural resources that they not only depended upon to live but where they also had deep and intimate bonds with so many areas within their territories where they practiced their religion of loving their Mother Earth and nature and all the abundance of bounty it has given sacrifices over time for their ancestors and present populations. They had a deep abiding faith respect and compassion for the natures finest most wondrous natural beauty in all the astonishing and truly mystical and mystifying ways of nature and the skies, the weather, the galaxies and seasons and had learned with admirable and incomparable intelligence and precision how to recognize the seasons, the weather turns, the natural conditions on water, land, thr temperaments in nearly all sentient life and could successfully and quite exemplary adapt their ways of life to adapt best to the ways of the natural environment and conditions in their environment at the time of year. They were once referred to as “the happiest people on Earth” by missionaries who’d been to testify to them about their own religious beliefs and practices but didn’t use any calculating, manipulative or life changing traumatic experiences or aggression against them either. This part of history makes me so enraged, so humble and I feel I haven’t even taken action to make my life meaningful and try to make some reparations on behalf of my ancestors and the government as a whole as this is yet still a population that’s underprivileged, underfunded oppressed and are targeted in the country’s systemic racism in their society, their institutions and overall lack of compassion or respect STILL to this day.
However, to hear these hateful and I’m certain they were paled down versions of the ugliness of the human race specifically the whites in their racist micro aggressions and macro aggression and exclusion that’s obnoxiously ignorant and is still being touted as a general and societal norm of perspective and HUMAN DECENCY towards all yet in this country when they speak of respect and opportunity and compassion they mean towards whites. Nowhere in their television, movies or even a portion of writers are changing the narrative and social climate by taking ACTION and to rage against thE MACHINE. Osage community and tribe has far more grace, human dignity and integrity than I’d ever imagine having let alone find the power to rise above a lifelong struggle of poverty oppression and discrimination. I’d not be nearly as composed, kind or humble. I’d love to be able to learn more from their culture and beliefs but I’m certain that every one of them are extremely weary of the white man and stranger outside of their reservations. They’ve always had the right to be left alone to love and live and learn and laugh their own ways and be at peace, content and feel. Deep sense of belonging and safety and security wherever they are on this planet yet it’s been proven Year after year for several thousands of years that the first few thousand years they were here alone they thrived, evolved and adapted. They’d figured the secret to being happy in this life and on this earth. That was traumaticallly torn and destroyed from their lives and their customs and since then, they’ve never been able to live in their natural state of being, practicing and living in their natural cultural heritage states and prevented in many areas from praying and having ceremonial rituals and community activities in the places they’d once known for thousands of years. Their loss is immense, it’s vast and expansive. It will leave a lasting impression and destabilizing impact in their communities and populations. Possibly forever. We should be ashamed of ourselves and take example and lead from these people who’ve known all along the way to live, to exist authentically peacefully and naturally as human beings

2. Grann is an incredible researcher - If you have enjoyed David Grann’s other works of historical non-fiction you will love Killers of the Flower moon as well. Again Grann starts with a story almost too incredible to be true, and uncovers more mysteries that remain unsolved to this day. Where Grann shines is in his meticulous and dogged research of the subject matter, as a reader you always feel like you’re watching a mystery being unraveled. Well worth a read before Martin Scorcese adapts it for AppleTV with an incredible cast.

3. A history telling masterpiece - I had been meaning to read this book for quite some time. I am shocked that this isn’t something that is taught in schools. I live in Osage county and graduated from a school not far. We were never taught about the Reign of Terror. The generational trauma that this dark period of US history has caused is unfathomable. I struggle to understand how man can be so cruel. And not just few cruel people, but MANY. Many of whom were never brought to justice and carried out a normal life stealing and murdering Osages. Read this book. It’s eye-opening, chilling, and thought-provoking.

4. Native Americans - It was fascinating, though so so sad, to get a sliver of understanding of how much the Native Indians suffered at the hand of white men. Their land was stolen, they were killed by the thousands, their heritage erased, their wealth plundered. For those who know little about this proud people, this book will hopefully raise your awareness and perhaps give you an insight as to just how long and how strongly prejudice has been rooted in our country. Recent events confirm that racism is still very much alive here. All of us need to work towards a fair treatment of all men. It is up to us!

5. Killers of the flower moon - As a lifelong Oklahoman, I'm just learning more of our dark history through this very detailed account. Having travelled these parts in the book, the author very skillfully described the setting. His effort to describe the culture made the story meaningful and vivid. It is a gripping tale yet hard to read and uncover the evil intent of men due to greed.

6. Great Book! A Page Turner. - I wasn’t planning to read this book, but after it continuously appeared in my recommendations, I gave in and bought it. The result was that I couldn’t put it down. I definitely walked away from this book having learned a great deal about something that I never knew about before.

7. A must read - I am simply dumbfounded that I had not ever heard of this horrific mass murder of the Osage Indians before now. This book should be required reading in high schools. I would suggest to any reader to take some notes as you are reading to assist in keeping the families straight in your mind. I have already purchased an additional copy to share with my son, who I am certain will share with others.

8. Fast and Fascinating Read - Killers of the Flower Moon got my attention when I saw it on the NYC bestsellers list. It's a page turning true story that would make a great movie. The book is an eye opening history of this country's mistreatment of Native Americans. It made me angry and sad knowing that our mistreatment has not ceased since our arrival on their land. I've been researching Native Americans history for the past years for a novel I'm writing. In all my research, this was the first information I read about the plight of the Osage Indians as well as the forming of the FBI. Loved this book and plan to buy several copies to give as gifts. If I could rate this book with stars, it wouldn't be a high enough rating. Thank you David Grann for this historical masterpiece.

1. Detailed research - As a reader I found this book a quick read, interesting and more than a little scary. As a nurse I was horrified that this menace was let loose to murder again and again and the corporate heads of hospitals were more concerned with themselves than saving patients lives. Although we do not really get into the motivation of Charles Cullen, that is not because the author didn't thoroughly research the details he could write about.

2. The Good Nurse - By boysmumas As a Certified Nurse Practitioner of years, I find this story so shocking. It's hard to comprehend that a nurse in my medical field could be guilty of such horrendous acts. I can remember working - hours in CCU to save one patient, then going home and worrying about what I could have done better. This guy was a monster and should not be called a nurse.

3. A fascinating read - This is a book that, and I say this fully aware of it's cliche potential, I simply could not put down. A true story illuminating a frightening psychotic killer and the tireless investigation of the corrupt actions of hospitals who are supposed to be in the business of protecting us and saving our lives. As my old family doctor once told me, "whatever you do stay out of hospitals." This book should help make things safer for us all.

1. Meandering, a must miss - There’s a good true crime/courtroom story here..... but it’s hidden amongst meandering, irrelevant stories. Rather than focus on the only interesting thing to happen during the author’s eight years in Savannah (the murder and trial) the book is a trying exercise in irrelevant character portrayals and social gatherings, none of which have any interest in the true crime story. I think this is what happen when a lifestyle writer takes a shot at courtroom drama. Miss. Skip this altogether, baffled as to the buzz and it’s years on the NYT Bestseller list. Maybe the movie is better....
2019-02-12
2. Maybe I just don't get it... - This is a nice enough, tongue in cheek account of savannah and her special weird characters that is somewhat entertaining. But I really fail to see the great literary acclaim this book earned - it is in the end a disjointed, jumbled up book consisting of separate stories thrown together and held loosely together by the murder trial.

1. Best crime book ever written? - I have read “In Cold Blood” twice. First, in the early seventies, when I could not put it down and read it in one sitting and now in . It has lost none of its punch. Capote’s portrayal of western Kansas in the fifties and his objective look into the motives (or lack thereof) of the murderers is captivating. I believe it is the best crime book ever written.

2. Great Book and Fairly Appealing - In Cold Blood should be a starred novel. When reading through a book, I tend to slowly read what is interesting to me. This book has had me read at a crawling pace multiple times to understand the content in detail. In Cold Blood has made me remember why reading books can be sometimes interesting. It also makes me want to read more of the book to see what happens. Once I got to the middle, the book took a turn and made me feel like these guys are kind of ‘average Joes’ that wanted to do something different. At the end, I felt somewhat sympathetic for them; I wanted to do more for proper justice. The book purposefully does not want to reach every audience that exists, but it can be read by nearly anyone interested in reading nonfiction novels.

3. My grandmother grew up and went to school with this family. - It's interesting to hear her talk about them as her friends and then read an outsiders views on the tragedy. Grandma tells me about them as she knew them and this gives me another view of how someone who didn't know them sees it. Great book.

4. Agony and ecstasy - The movie CAPOTE drew me to this excellent read. The portrayal of the ability of people to kill other people, whether criminals or the state, was masterfully conveyed, EXCEPT FOR THE E-VERSION WHICH REPEATED PAGES!!! I DO NOT KNOW HOW EACH SECTION ENDED!!! This includes the very end of the book.....not good enough, guys...
2012-09-08
5. Decent book, rather over flourished, though. - I thought this was a good book, it did much explanation and nary a detail was not written down. The only complaints I have is that one, the sentences were extremely long, and you can very easily "drift away" due to this. The sentences could have been much shorter and to the point, and still conveyed the same message. My next compliant is not with the book, itself, but with the producers of this ecopy. The last four or five pages of every part were missing. You would turn the page and they just wouldn't appear. So more of a software issue than an "author's issue."

1. Incredibly thorough - Since I live less than an hour’s drive from where these murders took place, we were barraged by news on a daily & sometimes hourly, basis on our local newscasts. Beginning with the st murder, all of the ABT coverage just didn’t seem to be relevant to this murder, yet it was touted over & over again. That disappeared quickly once Mike & Cynthia McClelland were killed. This book was completely riveting. I barely put it down for almost days. This may have been the best, most comprehensive true crime book I’ve ever read. Kathryn Casey is definitely an author I will read again.

2. In Plain Sight by Katherine Casey - This book is riveting! I usually read about a book a day, but I haven’t been able to read for almost a year. This is the first book that I couldn’t put down until I finished it. I loved it! She’s not the best writer that I’ve ever read, but I had no problem at all finishing the book in good fashion & with great enjoyment! I hope that you enjoy it too!

1. Was Ok. - I simply didn’t like the way it was organized. It jumped around too much between people and events and I had difficulty keeping track of everyone and their backstory. The author was obviously very knowledgeable and completed a substantial amount of research and investigation, but in my opinion, the product on the page didn’t work well for me.

1. Tragedy! - My heart goes out to the Turpin children. I can’t imagine the years of suffering they endured and the STRENGTH that they had to overcome such life-changing obstacles; The drastic changes that they must’ve faced after the escape from their parents and onto the reality of the world around them. Their story pulled my heart strings, I had a hard time putting the book down. I hope to read Flores’ “Sisters of Secrets” next.

1. The Watts Murder - The book was good. Although, Everything I read I had known already. But it was a good book. It gave an account about what happened in the order that it happened. It’s a very sad story about the ending of a beautiful mother and her beautiful little girls. May they rest in loving peace.

2. Interesting read! - I honestly have been reading up on this case since , but I learned a lot from this book. It is so heartbreaking that at times it’s hard to continue reading. I feel that, for a lot of who read up on this case, that we are all just trying to make the pieces fit as though it could fix the situation and bring them back...and the author makes a point towards the end of the book to express that we will never truly know all the answers. Like stated in the book, with all the pictures and videos on social media, you feel like you knew them. I’m glad towards the end of the book the author made sure there was no question as to who committed the murders. It’s also nice to see that Chris’ parents are starting to realize that he did actually murder his innocent children, and that they are just as confused as we are. I still can’t find it in my heart to be sympathetic towards them, the anger they have shown Shanaan through these interviews is disgusting. It’s almost like they have no qualms about her passing. I can see where the author has sympathy for them, and attempts to humanize them, and for that I have to give him props. I do wish that Shanaan’s family would have been more involved so we can get more of their side of things, but I completely understand why they decided not to. I hope they can find comfort and solace in this life, and be reunited with their loved ones in the next.

3. Too harsh on the victims and too easy on the perpetrator - While a compelling book to read, the author is clearly way too sympathetic to the husband who murdered his family. Leading up to the murders, he portrays the wife as a controlling, overbearing, image obsessed nightmare. It feels like an attempt to justify the unjustifiable - to victim blame. I wish I had known that before giving him my money. This was an unfair portrayal of a person who can no longer defend her own character. I have to wonder if he wrote it this way because her family declined to participate.

1. Disgusting - There is no excuse for utter trash like this. Yes, your killers will only learn from this crap. There is no concern by the author for the reader. 1. Reads like a fast paced novel - I wasn’t sure what I was expecting when I picked up this book but this book surpassed all my expectations. The book is well written and easy to follow, even though there are handful of people involved in the story. Must have been really painful and arduous to research this book and it shows with the level of details and the clarity with which the book is written.

2. American Kingpin is a Modern American Classic - American Kingpin tackles arguably the most technically complex crimes ever. It tells the story from the perspective of the mastermind and surrounding criminals and loved ones. And then gives us a window into the lives and work of the government agents and their colleagues and loved ones. It is rife with intrigue and humanity. It ventures into government bureaucracy and the dictatorship that was the Silk Road. All the while, it reads easy like a best-selling crime fiction. Kudos and many thanks to the author for bringing all of this together.

3. Phenomenal book - Incredibly well written. Author did a tremendous job, taking a treasure trove of information and painting a clear picture. The timeline of events, the way written, flowed nicely. Such a complicated real world story, but you are never lost in the book. I wish it was longer. Didn’t want the book to end!
2020-10-31
4. Incredible - If you’re even remotely interested in the story behind the Silk Road this is an amazing read, I was on the edge of my seat towards the end on how it all played out and it was beautifully written by this author definitely recommended. I learned a lot I didn’t know about the case and the backstory as well that I didn’t read about in the news when it broke, if you like this book there’s a similar book with a similar title by Kevin Poulsen called “Kingpin” which is a similar writing style and it’s thrilling as well.
2018-04-06
5. A Must Read! - A riveting story that I simply could not step away from, this book contains not just a recount of the life of the man behind the Silk Road, but rather an in-depth look at how he became an “American Kingpin” while still trying to maintain a semblance of his life as Ross Ulbricht. A ruthless drug lord, or an idealist and libertarian mastermind? You decide.

1. Last Book I Read from this Author - This book was hard to get through and it’s not the first book from this author where I’ve felt that way. A big part of any true crime book is the trial and he barely mentions it. The photo insert was pointless - a bunch of grainy images of houses. No pictures of the key law enforcement personnel and, strikingly, not one of Sarah Dutra, the only person convicted. It might be a style issue, but this is the last for this author.

1. Great Book! - I learned a lot from this book! I had no idea how pervasive the mob was. I so admire Bobby Kennedy’s fearlessly taking them on, and regrettably probably bringing on the assassination of the president. Interesting to have an idea of the mob’s values and protocol. So we have an inkling of what happened to Jimmy Hoffa!

2. Best book I've ever read. - I have read this book twice now. I read it for the first time a few years back and gifted it to multiple "friends of mine." I knew his book was special and go figure, earlier this year I find out that Martin Scorsese himself is doing a movie based on the book (with Deniro, Pesci and Pacino). It's a great read for anyone. The story is non-fiction and is the epitome of the cliche "you can't make this stuff up." While it's a great read for everyone, it's a must read for organized crime enthusiasts. Knowing a lot of the players already makes for an even more fascinating read. Do yourself a favor and get this book.

1. Don’t forget the Victims - Tom’s trip through the criminal justice system shows the injustice and power play in law enforcement. It was appalling how these officers quickly judged, dismissed and enacted their own cruelty. The victims (including Tom) became lesser characters while the Attackers took center stage. But the family held together although forever changed.

1. Tedious - The writing style is tedious, shifting between historical events and the tragedy on which it centers. I can’t recommend this book when all I wanted was for it to get better, but that never happened. I finished it out of obligation to the time I had already invested in it and was happy for it to end.

2. To refute a comment above - I’m a Mormon, and a historian. Please realize that Heber J. Grant was a polygamist against the Mormon church and the federal government. D&C teaches about how polygamy is “The new and everlasting covenant”. This is still canonized scripture. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints is still a supporter of polygamy today in sealings. I’m not a fundamentalist. I am simply a purveyor of the truth. These offshoots are symptoms of a cancer in salt lake. This religion is a cult and needs extermination. I admit this, still as a member on the inside who attends regularly and cannot get out for fear of losing all of my friends and loved ones. That’s a cults game. A special thanks to the author for having the courage to write and publish this book.

3. Wow! - The only thing I could say about this book was it was the most fascinating thing I have ever read. Being in only seventh grade, I devoured this book in only one week. Even though it was a little fist clenching at sometimes, it was impossible to put it down. I have read Krakauer's other books, this one is my all-time favorite.

4. The Best Book Ever Written About Mormons. - I have lived in Utah for thirty-five years, and I have been a practicing attorney for twenty-seven years. I was married to a BYU-educated woman, the daughter of a Bishop and Stake Relief Society President, for ten years. I currently represent two woman who are seeking relief from abusive Mormon men, including one case pending in American Fork, where the Lafferty saga climaxed. This is by far the best, and most accurate, book ever written about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and it's various schisms. And it is the only book that accurately examines the Mormon church in the wider context of religious experience and motivation. In addition, the book is well written and captivating.
2012-02-19
5. Unfair - I am not sure what the author's issue with this religion is but it is clearly a biased and misrepresented case being presented. Everything I have investigated shows that the polygamist offshoot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is completely unaffiliated with that church. I understand that there are people who don't like the Mormon religion and a LOT of misleading things are said about them. it's unfortunate that the author has used his dislike for religion to attack one by the use of a tragic story of two mentally unstable people. Not quite a legitimate situation to draw broad conclusions from. I think this book is a classic attack, uninformative, and unfair. But if you hate Mormons and aren't looking for legitimate explanation than you might enjoy this literary experience.

1. Love, Hate Book - There were great aspects to this book; however there were times it was almost a put down and not finish. The beginning is very slow and doesn’t grab the reader until completion of several chapters. I am glad I finished the novel as it exposed great deficiencies in the legal system and its procedures. If you choose to read it, stick through it all the way.

2. The Innocent Man - After reading of John Grisham's fictional books, in the past six weeks, this was an awesome read! I give great credit to the author for his tremendous research. I also give credit to the families involved as well as all the others who were wrongfully convicted. I encourage anybody who believes in the believes in the death penalty to read this book.
2016-05-02
3. Disappointing Read - At first the pace of the book made up for the tedium. Eventually, as I kept waiting for the point of the ending, I was just happy happy to have it finally be finished. I would not recommend his book - it's important to The Innocence Project - but not typical of an otherwise good author.

4. Not good - I'm very disappointed in this book. Having read several books by John Grisham, and found them great, this is a major failure! So much crazy and unbelievable police and legal work. It is bizarre to say the least. Maybe the book is a spoof on police and lawyers? I must have missed the humor.

5. The Innocent Man review - It's easy to call for the death penalty in the case of horrendous murders. This book reminded me that only God should be the judge when it comes to deciding who lives and who dies. And if one was not aware of the time period you would think you were reading a story that took place in the s. This highlights how even today justice is not always the result of our legal system. And last, even if only half of what was written about the Oklahoma prison system is true, the state should be ashamed and embarrassed.

6. The Innocent Man - This was a horrible read. Mr. Grisham should stick with fiction. the Innocent Man was filled with simple statements throughout the book, rarely telling a compelling or interestibg story. Honestly, i stopped reading half-way through becuase i was completely bored. I love John's past fictional work within the bounds of his legal background, but have been quite dissapointed when he strays outside those lines.

7. Innocent Man - I have always been a fan of John Grisham's, and this writing is right up there with his best. Though it is his first attempt at non-fiction, it is every bit as compelling as anything he has ever written. It tells the story of small town corruption and the crooked politicians that created and expanded that corruption, men that had no interest in facts or the truth. My mother was born in Hickory, and grew up in Ada, Oklahoma, where this all took place, so my interest was even further peaked. I literally could not put the book down. As usual, an excellent effort by John Grisham.

1. Excellent - Ann Rule, as always, was the grande dame of true crime. The story of Bitter Harvest is riveting, shocking, sad and infuriating. Ms. Rule’s psychological insight and character development of the principals in the story are masterful. I highly recommend this to fans of the true crime genre.
