1. Enjoyable but could use some polishing. - This book is definitely an enjoyable read. However, it could use some polishing. It was as if Brent Week's editor grew tired of editing his work, and skimmed through the rest of it without bothering to correct some issues. I hope this review doesn't scare anyone from reading this book though! The plot and the characters were very interesting!

2. A Dark Marvel - The Way of the Shadow is a superbly written novel, delving into the dredges of what it means to be human, to walk away from life or to accept and fight for what is right and what should not be allowed. The characters introduced are not inherently good, nor are their reasons morally right, but there is enough in their character that shows that in life there is a line, and when it cannot be crossed, the decision made will define who the character can be and whether redemption is possible. There are many crucibles in life for these characters and the following books will surely drive them to the breaking point. Some will come out alive and some will be broken beyond recognition. Brent Weeks is a master at character and world building. The history and characters are fully realized and beautifully described, making it easy to be drawn in and lost in The Way of the Shadows. 3. Super A - Browsing bookstore and had not read a fantasy in years. Read the back cover and was hooked. Just finished reading this and one of the most gripping and action packed page turners I've had in a long time. Characters you can dislike, love and enemies you wish you were Kylar to put them away! Loved it and have bought the other in the series on iBooks. Could not put this one down! You won't be disappointed at all. Renewed my interest in fantasy, majic and sword play and this is more than I expected!

4. Very great series - I thoroughly enjoyed the entire trilogy. Hard to put down, really. This is one of those rare "look up and it's am" stories. Not true high fantasy like Tolkien or Martin, more fast paced, good down and dirty fantasy. Reading this trilogy made me want to dig out and re-read the Belgariad or maybe the Black Company series. Worth the money, for sure!

1. A breath of fresh air - This book will make you feel so many things all at once. My heart hasn’t been fluttering of happiness in awhile but this book made me feel more than just sadness that I been feeling lately. This book filled me with hope that life is more than the bubble I created for myself. Highly recommend to read this masterpiece

2. Felt super long but so worth it. - It took me a while to get through this cause I kept picking it up and putting it back down. But honestly can say this is one of the most uniquely written books I’ve ever read. The last pages were the most interesting I would say. Definitely a slow burn but worth it in the end. Love that this author left the potential for a sequel and I would definitely revisit these characters if they do return! Chills at the end.

3. Enchanting but long - I loved this book! I couldn’t put it down. Granted, it’s probably twice as long as it needs to be as it starts to get a bit drawn out and predictable about halfway through. But it’s such a beautiful, fantastical story. You really get lost on the magic of it all! Definitely recommend and would read again.

4. Living while losing. - I am grateful for the explanation of emotions and consequences that were revealed. When you have lost someone the range and depth can be so great that it overwhelms and slips past. Addie helps me relive that time and delve into feelings and fears and joy that I did not comprehend at that horrible, numb wasteland of unexpected tragic loss. I am grateful. barb

5. I’ve lost so much sleep. - I got this book a few days ago, because I have always been a fan of V.E Schwab’s work. But this story is so unique and so captivating that I have spent the last few days devouring each word on every page of this book. Now, after reading the final chapters, I can finally sleep. And I couldn’t be happier. Sweet dreams my fellow insomniacs.

6. Wonderfully written and engaging - I truly loved this book. What a story! I loved all of the different time periods, the characters Addie meets and interacts with…I honestly couldn’t put the book down. I kind of want to go back and reread it- I’m sure I missed parts. I loved all of the intricate details. One of my new favorite books.!!!

7. The thing about Addie LaRue… - …is that you could have met her. I could have met her. Spent months with her as a lover, a friend, a stranger who took me away, love at first sight. And because of the nature of her curse I would never remember. Thank for this story, this story was beautiful and it has a way of making you feel part of it.

8. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue - INCREDIBLE story-telling. The kind that makes you re-read line after line trying to soak up the beauty of the words and hold onto them like precious tokens. Immediately after finishing Addie LaRue, I began searching for more books by V.E. Schwab because I couldn’t bare the thought of not having her words to occupy me. Couldn’t suggest this book highly enough!

9. This book is literal magic - July th, : Addie LaRue makes a bargain with the darkness to become immortal and save herself from a loveless marriage that will force her to stay in her small French hometown for the rest of her life. But Addie doesn’t quite understand the consequences of her actions. She can still feel pain and get injured, but she heals quickly. She stays young forever and doesn’t age. But with everything good comes consequence: No one can remember her for more than one night. Not her family, her friends or those she meets along the way. She sees the darkness in the form of what she imagined her soulmate would look like - long dark hair and piercing green eyes, or Luc, as she names him. Luc is the only one who can remember her and though he wants her to give in and give up her immortal life, they’re strangely drawn to each other. : Enter Henry. Also of dark hair and green eyes. And years since the day she was cursed she finds someone who can remember her too. As they get to know each other they fall in love. And while Henry does age and grow older, there’s something else he’s keeping from Addie. We get dual timelines from the past as well as “present day” . I found it fascinating to watch Addie navigate her new life and it’s limitations. Throughout the years Addie finds new ways to leave her mark on history. Her relationship with both Henry and Luc absolutely broke me in the most beautiful way. While there is a bit of slow start with world building, Schwab’s writing was beautiful and kept me going. I could see and feel the story as if I were there. I loved getting to read how Addie found herself, love and how to leave her mark along the way. She is an amazing strong, female lead!

1. Riveting From Start To Finish - There’s no denying that this book isn’t long (especially the online version coming out to be nearly pages when the original is only around ). But that doesn’t change the fact that this is GORGEOUS, the prose, the characters, the theme. In spite of the fantastical silver that drives the plot, everything surrounding the plot is so realistic it feels like stepping back into late ’s England. It reminded me of a history and linguistics lecture, but in a way that felt like a harrowing tale written by a classical author. This book does an incredible job conveying the horrors of colonialism and what it did to so many country’s (and the impact they retain due to it today). A new favorite of mine and one I will know doubt be recommending to anyone and everyone.

1. Slow paced, but good - I liked this book. I read it in a day, took about hours or so. The beginning-middle dragged a bit. The story was interesting. I would have preferred if the contents of the book were condensed to be the length of half the book or so, and then for some more content. Lots of pages for not that much development. I probably wouldn’t read a sequel, not invested enough in the characters.

2. Great Read - I haven’t read a book like this in such a long time. I was pleasantly surprised how this story was weaved. People say this book is almost like a combo of Pride and Prejudice and Dracula, and I agree. It’s not at all what I expected. The author did a great job of combining post colonialism with a classic gothic troupe that hasn’t been seen since books written in the s. You get the classic romance and eeriness of a big old house, but with an unexpected twist.

3. Wow - Mexican Gothic is a slow burn book with the perfect amount of horror. I love the author’s way with words and imagery that it made me feel I was a ghost watching from the sideline. There were times that the book did drag on and it felt a bit repetitive but it can be overlooked. If you are a Lovecraft fan or a horror fan in general I highly recommend that you read this book.

4. Fresh take on the gothic romance - While the premise sounds fairly typical—a cousin fallen mysteriously ill at an isolated mansion in need of rescue—the development is not. The cultural influences (indigenous and Mexican mythology) lend a new element unfamiliar to the average reader. The atmosphere is suitably chilling without being over the top. The characters are mostly dynamic, though the villains could’ve been fleshed out a bit more. The romance itself doesn’t feel too forced or abrupt either. A solid choice for lovers of horror with a touch of romance wanting new experiences from other perspectives.

5. Dull Slog - I only read this book because it had some decent reviews but for me it was a tedious slog that failed to engage. To be fair I only managed % but that is also a sad indictment because I gave it a really good go; much to my regret. The main character is a spoiled high society Mexican debutant who enters an episode of “Tales of the Unexpected”; that in itself is not so bad, and maybe a decent editor could have salvaged a short story, but not for me.

6. Gripping and just the right amount of terrifying. - I’m not usually one to be surprised by a story. That being said, I had absolutely no idea what was going to happen in this book and it THRILLED me. This story is as intoxicating as the malevolent force our beloved heroine faces. I felt my heart pounding in tune with the house and held my breath at every turn. I sat down to read the first chapter and I’ve finished the whole thing three hours later. I literally could not put it down. I must say however that this isn’t the sexy crime thriller you might think it is, and if you aren’t prepared for genuine gothic horror you might wish to find your crime fiction fix in another story. This story has revived the true gothic horror genre. This author has made the spirit of Mary Shelley proud, and reminded us that anything can strike fear into your heart if the right person tells the story.

7. Atmospheric Novel of Gothic Horror - “Mexican Gothic” is a novel that slowly builds a rich and atmospheric tale of horror. It follows Noemí Taboada, a young socialite and student who is sent by her father to check on her cousin Catalina. He has received a disturbing letter from Catalina that makes him concerned about her mental health. Noemí puts aside her studies to become an anthropologist in order to travel to the mountainous and remote home of the Doyle family. This English family had moved to Mexico generations ago and operated a formerly prosperous silver mine, but the mine closed and the family has declined till only a few members remain. Catalina had met and married the oldest Doyle son, Virgil. When Nomeí reaches the ancestral home of the Doyle’s, things begin to get creepy. Her cousin seems distant and disturbed. The Doyles are strange and aloof, except for Francis, the quiet and studious youngest son. The story progresses later by layer into more disturbing revelations, and into more and more darkness. The story is a gripping and rich tale, that only clearly reveals the form of its horror in the final third. The characters are engaging and surprisingly modern given the time period of the setting. Nomeí is initially characterized as a social butterfly, but we learn she is also an intellectual, and later we see her amazing strength. The novel is well named, and Ms. Moreno-Garcia plays with the tropes of the gothic novel in different ways. The sacrificial virgin; the damsel in distress; the cruel, unyielding husband; the spooky, distant locale are all on display. However, there is also a post-colonial element throughout the story, and a racist aspect exemplified in the eugenics espoused by the Doyle patriarch. This is a modern gothic tale under the trappings.

8. a lot of fun - this book was a lot of fun. it isn’t deep or full of thought provoking philosophy or anything - it is simply a straightup haunted house story with a fun twist and likable characters. i don’t always want or need great literature, sometimes i just need a fun little book and this was exactly that.

1. Great Read! - I would so like it though, after reading books for the Matt to finally be healed! I love the characters they are entrancing! The location and times are refreshing and add depth and quality to the storyline!! Though I believe Matt’s cure would alleviate an angle it would also make it less a day distracting element, to further developing their relationship and personalities! Thank you anyway !

2. Perfect reading - The Glass and Steele series (I'm on book ) are perfect reading. There is just enough suspense mixed with romance to keep it light, interesting and moving along. The characters are quirky but relatable. This isn't overly complex writing, but sometimes you just want entertaining stories. I highly suggest digging into this series.

3. What a nice surprise! A new author to add to my collection of favorites - I just read all three India Glass novels straight through and I really enjoyed each one. I read lots of books...lots...and many of those are mysteries so it's hard for me to find ones that are unique. The combination of mysteries to solve, a bit of magic, and a smidgen of romance are so well combined in these novels. The plots are well thought out, the characters are interesting and the magic gives everything a special twist. I've pre-ordered the fourth one with anticipation. Thanks for these good reads and for offering them at a reasonable price.

1. Great start to series - The Librarian of Crooked Lane is a great follow on series to Glass and Steel. Nice to know what has happened to characters from the Glass and Steel series but also sad to read that a couple of those characters have died. The mystery is well thought out. The chemistry is hot between Gabe and Sylvia. Daisy is a captivating new character. Anxious for the next book in the series.

1. so good - loved this book and was captivated throughout its entirety :) there were some slight issues with pacing that other reviews talk about as well, but that shouldn’t deter you from reading this book because it’s genuinely amazing. The violent scenes that come in the later chapters were not there solely for shock factor or anything either, as they were all portrayals of real war crimes that occurred in China during the Second Sino-Japanese war. There were also a lot of cultural “Easter eggs” that I loved (as a Chinese person) coming across as I read, since I understood their origin :)

2. Rins autonomy - She isn’t like a normal character in any other book. She is herself and makes very unpredictable, sometimes selfish decisions. It makes for an amazing book! When you yell at the main character because you are forced to hold her accountable, you know you have found something truly great. She is equally unpredictable as she is core to her beliefs. She is a mess, I love it.

3. Haldraka Beofen - Very well written book, there are some issues with pacing in the story as a couple of thing happen to suddenly but its not as if they happen in a manner that is ridiculous its just a matter of person preference particularly around finale and the whole phoenix thing that happens its a bit to fast for the pacing there. Same with the school arc but overall its not something worth knocking the book for because its extremely well written and was an excellent book so much so that I’ve order a physical copy as well.

4. Got Me Hooked by the First Chapter!! - Reading this book felt very different from reading any other Y/A Fantasy I’ve ever read. Felt like the author focused of details that typically would go unnoticed by others which changed the whole perspective of the book, gave it a sort of depth that made it completely unpredictable. The only thing I would negatively say about this book is the ending was slightly disappointing. It was understandable why it ended the way it did, however, it left me wanting more because I was filled me with a hole that needed to be explained and wasn’t. Despite this empty ending, I wish I could read it again for the first time because it was an experience that I would love to repeat!

5. Fantastic book - I absolutely adore this book and series especially in the realistic portrayal of violence and evil that mirrors real events in China before and during world war . There’s no sugarcoating the way the characters are negatively effected and how badly the suffer in the midst of this terrible war.

6. Brilliant new author, amazing new book - I can’t wait for the next one. A fresh voice in the fantasy realm. I’ve read many new authors first books and sometimes one of them just has that “it” factor. I felt the same in when I read Elantris from Sanderson, the Warded Man by Brett and The Way of Shadows by Weeks. Sure to soar to the top of the charts like a phoenix. ;) If you have even a little interest give it a read you won’t regret it.

1. Such a great series! - This was really so great, I just enjoyed every minute of it! Such lush descriptions of places, magical creatures, and characters. How could you not fall in love with this world. I loved the story and where it went. I laughed and cried and I’m sorry it is over. Although it leaves room for much more to tell ( please please)! A really great series, especially if you love Egypt, like I do!

2. Luxuriate - The Empire of Gold is nothing short of a revelation. It is a truly difficult task for a writer to continue to enthrall readers beyond an original story, but Charkraborty has managed with each release to elevate her saga into the pantheon of literary trilogies. I could not set this book down until I was too tired to continue, then I was almost jittery until I could pick it up again and continue. It had been over a year since I’d read the preceding volumes, so I reread them in anticipation of The Empire of Gold. To my great surprise, they were even better the second time because I could take my time and luxuriate in the precision of Chakraborty’s writing. I suspect this trilogy will stand the test of time and still be relevant into the next millennium. Give your spirit a gift and read The Daevabad Trilogy.

1. Lovvvvve it. - I watched the Anime series first and then read the book and I love how it’s almost exactly the same however the important parts are explained better in the book. If you love the anime read the book and everything becomes so much clearer. If you haven’t watched the anime do it after you read the book the story really comes to life.

2. I SAN LANG - So fun to read! I really love how well written the characters are, and the world building is also done so well. This was definitely a page turner. Only took off one star because I think the two story arcs dragged out for just a little too long. But I still couldn't put this down! I am so excited to read the rest of the series.

3. Amazing book!!! - I love this book so much!!! I can never get enough of it!! Spectacular love story! Incredible plot and well writing! Xie lian and Hua Cheng practically invented love. Their love is so wholesome, I totally recommend this. It’s long but worth it. You might have a hard time a hard time understanding it if you’ve never watched historical C-dramas or have never read a book written by a Chinese author. It can be very confusing but luckily there is a guide. The book is amazing book but can be really dark and may be disturbing to some people. It is not for someone with a weak heart. So watch out but I think you’ll just love the protagonist Xie Lian more as well as the love interest Hua Cheng.

4. / - this is my favorite book ever. it’s so well written. the humor is so well done, the main character’s thoughts are just vague enough that you can’t always tell what he’s thinking, and most plot twists you won’t see coming from a mile away. so glad the english version is being officially published

1. Ok but Nothing Great - This was a solid read. The magic system was never explained nor the warring countries. The main protagonist was a bit bland and let ppl get away with too much. It’s ok to be justifiably mad at being deceived. Instead Arnault let everything slid even made excuses or exceptions. Such as groups that were prejudice against his kind or made bias remarks about his ppl. I liked a few secondary characters better even though it’s only one POV which I hates. Overall I liked it. I just was expecting something along the adventures of Wheel of Time or the Magic system of Brandon Sanderson , great character such as George R. R. Martin, or Brent Weeks.

1. “A Novel of High Fantasy and Low Stakes” - “Legends & Lattes” is the debut novel by Travis Baldree, who is better known in literary circles as a full-time audiobook narrator. It’s a classic alternative world fantasy novel with swords, magic, orcs, gnomes, and many other fantasy races. However, it is a very different and refreshing novel within this genre. The title page states it is “A Novel of High Fantasy and Low Stakes.” The main character of this novel is an adventurer, a female orc known as Viv. She has come to the City of Thune to pursue her dream. She’s grown tired of the typical life of a swordswomen, pursuing treasure, defeating monsters, etc. Viv is seeking to hang up her sword and settle down. Yes, she wants to open a new type of establishment known as a coffee shop. She finds and buys an old livery stable and sets out seeking help to refurbish it to sell the latest gnomish drink. She finds a taciturn hob known Cal to help her remodel. Eventually, she seeks help with operating the shop. In response to her advertisement, she meets Tandri, a misunderstood succubus. Soon, a gifted ratkin baker called Thimbel becomes part of the team. There are obstacles to be overcome, and issues both internal and external that must be dealt with. But with the help of her friends both former and new, Viv stands up to these new challenges. This is a heartwarming book, that draws you into a very different fantasy where the world doesn’t need to be saved, or the dark lord defeated. It tells the story of Viv and her friends coming together to create a special place for themselves and the people of Thune. It’s a great story! My Tor e-book version included a bonus prequel story called “Pages to Fill” which tells the story of how Viv came to seek her new life, and her first encounter with coffee in a gnomish city. This was a great little bonus tale in the world of Legends & Lattes.

2. A Fun “Bit of Fluff” - This review was first published on Kurt's Frontier. Synopsis: Viv is a battle-weary orc who is aiming for a fresh start. She has traveled to Thune, her heart set on opening the city’s first-ever coffee shop. Yet her goal is beset with difficulties. Old and new enemies seek to disrupt her plans. More importantly, no one in Thune has the faintest idea of what coffee is. It’s a path she can’t hope to walk alone. Whether through the arcane magic hidden in her shop, a delicious pastry, or a freshly brewed cup, people get drawn into her venture and become partners, friends, even family. Review: I’ve always said a storyteller’s greatest asset is the question, “what if …?” What if an orc came upon the concept of coffee and decided to turn it into a business? What challenges would such an unusual, budding entrepreneur face in a fantasy world? Is there magic? Yes. How about battle? A little. The blade work is minimal. Because I am something of an amateur barista, the title drew me to pick up the book. Travis Baldree doesn’t go into much detail about the setting but describes the coffee shop in loving detail. I liked the interpersonal relationships, though some of the conflicts seemed resolved too easily. If you are looking for high fantasy, this isn’t the book. Other reviewers describe it as a “cozy fantasy” and even “a bit of fluff.” However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t a fun read.

1. So Fun - These stories are a lighthearted read that I desperately look forward to after a long day sitting at my desk job. I love the characters and blend of Wild West with proper England. Matt’s character is the best. I love how he is not afraid to be proud of his American raising but is still respectful to his English family. And of course India rocks. I love powerful strong female characters. And India, awesome name.

2. The Magician's Diary - I love C. J. Archer's books. As an author her writing skills are profound. She blends suspense in her plot as well as attraction between characters in the perfect recipe. I am never bored reading her stories (sixteen so far) at any point. The plots move along at a steady pace. Just enough description of the surroundings that won't interfere with the story. Thank you C. J., keep them coming!

1. From "Chalion" to "Five Gods" - So happy to see (and read) another book in this series, even with the renaming of the series. I can highly recommend all Bujold's books. I first met her through the "Shards of Honor" audiobook in my library's Overdrive app...the result of which has been many truly enjoyable hours with Bujold, and another name on my favorite author list. So looking forward to "Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen", especially if it builds on the Vorkosigan books. May she write for another years!

2. Great read! - So when I first found out that a new novella was going to be released in the five gods series, I was beyond happy. And a fully enjoyed reading it. My only disappointment was that it was short, which was obvious as its a novella, and not a full length novel. My hope is that maybe Lois will continue the story in another full length novel in the future, because I really want to find out what happens to Penric next!
2015-07-20
3. Wheee! Love Penric! - I had so much fun reading this. Once I finally found it under the title itself here, I pounced, I bought, I read...when I should have been sleeping. It starts out along the lines of No good deed goes unpunished, at the time Penric acquires his demon--or the demon acquires him. Penric's life changes completely from younger son of poor nobility about to contract an arranged marriage. Suddenly, he is a matter of theological concern--and no one will touch him, a situation I hope can change in a later story. This is not your parents' demon. Penric is a polite young man, and extends that to what is sharing his body. It reminds me of Johannes Cabal, in another delightfully humorous series my husband's been reading, where politeness towards supernatural entities makes one that much powerful. I giggled and laughed a lot through this story, set in a different part of Chalion. The dialogue's a joy, and the process of Penric & his "horse" getting to know each other and work together is as well. Go on, buy this and experience the ride!

1. Sad to see the end! - I was so hoping this was not the last book! Of course All Good things must come to an end. This series did not disappoint and Jennifer Anne Davis has provided an amazing journey! It was a great ending to the series…but an equally Amazing journey. I would not be disappointed if at some point we got to see these characters again!

1. Disappointing - After reading the hype that this book was a Tolkien set in Africa I was all in, after all “The Epic of Sundiata” was one of my favorite reads in college. This book is very artsy and has interesting concepts but for me it never coalesced into something I found engaging enough to finish. Kudos to those of you that did.

2. Outstanding - If you are a casual reader, or even just a casual reader of fantasy, this book might not be for you. If you are interested in reading a story that obliterates the typical expectations for fantasy, and carves a new path in the genre, pick up BLACK LEOPARD RED WOLF. If you are interested in reading characters who are round and nuanced and full of conflict and dramatic tension, this book is for you. If you are interested in reading a book that challenges you with elevated prose and writing that requires your brain to be engaged, then stop reading my review and start reading BLACK LEOPARD RED WOLF. There are a lot of reviews that say this book is boring, or too convoluted, or not like most fantasy (as if that’s a bad thing). You have to understand that you are entering a new world, with a style of storytelling we do not often digest in western culture (again, not a bad thing to have something new and unique). The first hundred or so pages are massively world-building, so be patient. Embrace the new, it’s good—dare I say better than the old, tired genre of sword & sorcery. I have read Game of Thrones. This is not Game of Thrones. This is better. I look forward to reading the next entry in this series. A second read through definitely helps to readdress the first hundred-ish pages & truly understand what’s happening, the world building is so dynamic and intricate. Brilliant piece of prose!

1. Iman - This book is an incredibly imaginative trip into a fantasy world. Wonderfully written, and leaves you wanting more, I have the entire series in paperback format, but wouldn't mind owning it here, too. Those who love Japanese history/culture, this is a absolute MUST READ for you. Loved this series.

1. A Matter of Taste - I started reading this book years ago and lost it. I had looked for it and was out of print, or unavailable at my list library and I didn’t bother requesting it from another library branch. The moment I saw it here I had to snatch it. I couldn’t put it down until I was done reading it! loved it and I am delighted to see there is a sequel. I am getting it right away!!!

1. Simply written, extraordinarily captivating - This is not an epic novel and won’t be compared to The Sword of Truth, Wheel of Time or Harry Potter. The reason for stars is that her writing style is fluid. It feels like a long story, told by a friend at the best barbecue you’ve ever been to; and you don’t want it to stop. The first book was free, the nd book $. and the third which I’m about to buy is $.. I’ve read two books in two days and received $ worth of entertainment. Keep em coming Ms Archer.

2. Love it! Highly recommend! - I fell in love with the first book and read it over and over until I could purchase the second. Although the first in the series is much more suspenseful, I still loved it so much that it took me less than one day to read the second. And it was amazing to get the ending that I wanted and still be able to look forward to continuing the story. I purchased book immediately.

3. Captivating story - This book holds my very interest in fantasy mystery. I chose to read this book on the hopes of achieving my daily reading goals. Surprisingly, I couldn’t stop reading the book. I finished reading the book after few hours. The storyline line was engrossing. I was totally immersed in the book. Trust me this book is a must read!. Unfortunately, only Book was free and after reading, it drives you with urges to buy and read the the other parts of the book. Sadly, I don’t have $. for each other part of the book.

4. Her majesty's necromancer - Fascinating story and very interesting characters. I have read books and right after each other and now am on book . My iPhone tells me that my reading time per day is hours and min. Yes I am on vacation. Reading in Hawaii. That's how crazy enjoyable and addictive this series is.

5. Can't wait for the third book - The main character grates on my nerves but the writing is great as usual. This author has a sort of formula that I'd noticed from her other trilogies that soured over time for me, but with this one it feels like she's mixed it up a bit and it feels more comfortable and fresh. It's a good read, better than the first installment of this series, but unfortunately I can't really bring myself to stomach the main character, which is just a personal feeling on my end I believe and doesn't reflect the writing.

1. Riveting - When I first started the Poppy War trilogy I loved everything about Rin. Her passion, her stubbornness and daring. When she didn’t back down from anyone or feel ashamed for being not the right color or poor. That she felt resentment, gave into anger and fight take the high road. She felt so human. Too many characters are all goodness personified, self-righteous or about taking the high road or doing whatever right. They felt unreal and not relatable. Then the second book came. Rin became too hard and less human. I still loved the character but after her reunion with her foster brother I started looking at her differently. Some empathy and love for him didn’t manifest. Leaving him in the refugee camp and not trying to ask for him to at least be given a job or enlist him as a soldier. At least something you would do if you truly ever cared for someone that was starving or without resources. Now Rin flaws I loved make me look at her not in such a good light. In the end she was back on my good side. I saw the betrayal coming miles away. I never trusted that person. Or maybe I’ve read too many thrillers and mysteries not to have seen this.

2. Disappointing conclusion - The series started off with a bang: great world building, great characters. But by the third novel it seemed that the author didn’t know what she wanted to do with the story, with lots of seemingly random twists and turns, leading to an ending that seemed almost an afterthought. Furthermore, the novels descended deeper and deeper into gratuitous cruelty. Too much back and forth, too much aimlessness, too little coherence. But I finished all three; there’s plenty of talent here.
