1. No account of methods - This is a cursory overview of the characters involved in the creation of the concept of precision. However, it glosses over how precision was created. I suppose the title says it accurately: it’s a book about perfectionists, not about how perfectionists achieved perfection! About / the way through it gets tediously repetitive, and the people are less interesting.

1. Great Book - Bryson is a wonderful writer. He makes history live with a human compassion and understanding and makes complex subjects real for the layman. He sprinkles just enough gossip and humor to keep any reader riveted to a brilliant storyline. He educates without preaching and entertains without malice. He funnels genius and opens your thinking, while giving you an appreciation for the work of so many great and not so great people. Read this book you will not regret it.

1. History according to Military Industrial complex - Another biased and mostly pro-Western narratives. Yes, there are atrocities & sufferings on all sides. But the big question, why did US went there in first place to prop up faltering French occupation, instead of supporting independence of Vietnam? This is not history, this is a perversion of history to absolve US military industrial complex.

1. Hello - For those of us whom are curious about where money came from and where it's going and do not work in the financial services industry, this book is a little too deep. Otherwise, I commend the author for taking on what is at the same time a mundane and convoluted topic while also fascinating. -K

1. A brief history on knowing and discovery. - What I thought would be a good baseline primer texts of core scientific principles turned out to be so much more. Bryson’s monumental effort both catalogs the general principles of our world and universe, but more importantly captures the history of the great scientific exercise. The countless people over time who worked tirelessly to discover more and more about our selves and the universe. The book is no easy march through history and science. Easy and hard concepts are everywhere for you to discern. But with every page, that inane child like wonder for the natural world and the WHY of how everything works comes roaring back. It would be great if books like this were read concurrently or in summary to the school textbooks on science that we are assigned. The approach would bring a little levity and wonder back to the slog of academia. Some of what you will encounter in this tour of the world of science you will already know, the rest will be new and engaging. Indeed, it’s the interconnected nature of all the disciplines, personal back stories, squabbling, and partnerships that emerge that make this history so complex and entertaining. This was the most accessible scientific text I have ever read. If more people read this we may have been able to not have such a hard struggle with understanding vaccinations during the pandemic.

2. Fascinating, disturbing, important - I learned so so much about the world, where it came from, where we came from, what we are, where it might all be going. The more I learned, the more adrift in the meaninglessness of life i became. I would look at society, buildings, conflicts, plans.... everything was reduced to a reminder that all this is is spinning atoms, organized stardust. Is meaning or purpose or even life itself just an illusion? Is it all just random, accidental? Going nowhere? Before this book i could live in a relatively content bubble of a sense of meaning, purpose, control, and yes, a belief that something greater was behind it all, to somehow make it all make sense, a plan, a reason. Now, i have all that thrown into severe doubt, and i live daily with a bleak loss of the comfort of the illusion. But, it’s important to learn everything this book has compiled, to make an educated decision of how to view life.

3. A Thorough Yet Brief Compendium of Natural History - I'm incredulous of the amount of research Bryson put into this book. He really took the time to go above and beyond toward realms of thought and inquiry far outreaching his scope as an author. I can't help but appreciate the immensity of this work. I encourage anybody of a high school reading level to give this book a chance. The beginning is breathtakingly illustrative of concepts otherwise unimaginable to the average Joe, and what's more, Bryson's language does little to obstruct or obscure the big picture. So much literature of this nature is dismissed on account of lofty diction and esoteric jargon, but this particular book is a breath of fresh air for anybody with even a subtle interest in science and natural history wanting to better understand it all. All that keeps this book from a five-star rating are the brief periods of dry material which prove necessary in compiling a vast summary of time so succinctly. It's a picky critique and easily overlooked.

4. Not Worth It - Save yourself a couple bucks and buy the regular edition of this book. The illustrations are really just google search worthy, and frankly just take away from the writing. Some of the illustrations were cartoons from the newspaper vaguely referencing the subject, and others are low resolution pictures of nebula and other spacy things (clearly I'm no expert). Overall not worth it, though the regular text is brilliant. I love it.

1. Delightful Story of Exploration - Great story that proved fascinating on so many levels; the character of Magellan, alternately courageous and persistent but flawed, the descriptions of life on the ships, the clash of European and native cultures, the geography of circumnavigating the globe, the economics of the spice trade, etc. Great read.

1. Wonderful story about a grim event - I enjoyed the musical “Come from Away” before reading this book, and the additional wealth of stories and details here provide a fuller & richer experience.
There is no silver living to / but the story of the world coming to the doorstep of this little Canadian town is the closest possible thing.

2. The day the world came to town - One of the very best books I have read and I have been reading for over years. It made you laugh, made you cry, a book I could not put down. It also made me very proud that I was born in Newfoundland, and I am now a United States citizen living in this great country for years

3. So Uplifting!! - I quickly felt as though I was one of the passengers, and then interchangeably, one of the townspeople. Having lived thru the / (in Texas) through the whole ordeal, I was only aware of what Americans were going through (here). Reading this book years later, I now realize how it affected SO many other nationalities, but in different ways. I also never heard about (or thought of) all those flights that were inbound from other countries when the U.S. cancelled all landings, but now I know. What amazes me most is just HOW GENEROUS people are, to complete strangers, with NO expectation of repayment, and on the other side of that coin, how giving the American guests were after-the-fact. This was truly a wonderful book, written in a great form, that included a huge cast of characters in one book, but gave enough background on each one to make you think you knew them. I can't give this enough stars, but wish I could.

4. A New Perspective - My son was assigned this book to read for his Theology class. Over the past several years, I have realized the true enjoyment of reading his assignments for this class. This book, however, was more than exceptional. I thoroughly enjoyed the new perspective on /. This enlightenment coupled with the dynamic characters, both Newfies and visitors alike, made this book an extraordinary read.

1. Great - This is a great book that summarizes the Cold War. Although it doesn't go into detail about things like the Space Race or the Persian Gulf War, that's understandable because of the scope of things that need to be covered on this subject. I would say it's a great book for newcomers to the Cold War like myself.

1. Not the Full Edition - Missing Photos of Palace - While the written content of the book may be decently informative & moderately well written this isn't the full edition such as the printed edition. I was HIGHLY disappointed that all photos of the Princess' living quarters that are referred to a lot in the book are completely missing. This wasn't noted in the description of the book on iTunes. Was very disappointed when I bought the book & after reading a while flipped to the end to review the pictures of her living quarters in the palace only to find a few photos of Diana and then a single sentence at the end saying that not all photos were available for ebook edition. What a rip off. Highly disappointed that such an important part such as these photos are missing when they were referred to in the book so much and then them missing from the ebook not being noted in the description before purchase. Don't waste your time or money here. If you feel the absolute need to read this book then buy the printed version at your preferred book store.

2. Photographs? What photographs? - If a book offered for the iPad is going to be sold minus the photos, shouldn't that be noted? Very disappointing! The author speaks of including his own photos, and yet not a single photo has been included here. Put away the iTunes card and buy yourself the hardbound copy of this one if you're really interested in the full book.

1. A World Undone - Superb. The most readable WWI account I have ever read. The author brings to life the grizzly realities of the first major war with modern weaponry. Horrific yet mesmerizing. The actors in this tragic drama were some of the bravest men and women the world has seen, both from the central powers as well as the western allies. I wholeheartedly recommend this book and cannot wait to read more from this author.

2. Comprehensive, Enlightening, and Entertaining - Meyer has outdone himself with this marvelous comprehensive single volume work on the Great War. He delves into the historical events which led each of the major powers to war. It is more than just a historical account of the Great War, it is an autopsy report of the death of four major empires: Russia, Germany, Austria-Hungry, and Ottoman. For the long term effects of the war were devastating to the "old empires." Enjoy this work, it belongs in the library of every serious and casual fan of history in general and more specifically, Military History.

3. Readable, balanced, thorough, informative - Meyer's one volume history of The Great War is nothing short of superb. It's long enough to be thorough but not so long as to overwhelm a general reader like me. The writing is clear and very readable, candid in its assignment of praise and blame and yet balanced and fair. I especially appreciated the excuses on various subjects that Meyer adds to each chapter. The maps don't come through as well as I would like on my iPad but there are lots of maps on the Web. The photos are an unnecessary but agreeable bonus. I had never read a book on WWI before reading Meyer's A World Undone and I have to admit that I was a bit overwhelmed at first. But this wasn't Meyer's fault at all. Yes, there are lots of names and personalities but Meyer does an amazing job of handling them clearly. The real problem was that the causes of the war truly are very complicated and confusing. I read Meyer up to the end of , and I was hooked, but I knew it wasn't all sinking in as well as I wanted. So I stopped and read Michael Howard's excellent First World War: A Very Short Introduction. That helped me get a rough overview. But it's a sign of how good Meyer's book is that, after getting my bearings with Howard, I was eager to return to Meyer, and was then able to complete his book with understanding and great enjoyment. As a one volume account of WWI, Meyer's book is remarkably solid. I enjoyed it greatly.
