1. fascinating book - This is one of the best casual science books I have ever read. I think it fantastic for non-scientists and researcher scientists alike. The book discusses important scientific achievements in the context of history and society. For a research scientist, the scientific principles are known, but the book teaches you “the rest of the story.” I’m a research scientist and I couldn’t put the book down (literally). My friend who is not a scientist found the science to be easy enough to understand and really enjoyed both aspects: science and history.

2. Delightful book making chemistry interesting - I am very pleased with this book. The chapters are interesting and well assembled. I bought the book for my high school daughter to use as a supplement to her class work. It goes way beyond my expectations. In the "chemistry" portions, the text is written in an understandable and entertaining way. When historical references are made, it was written in such a way I felt like the events were happening recently. Makes the characters important to science and chemistry specifically, seem like real people, not just brilliant scientists. Nice mix of trivia and useful/informative science.

3. Fantastic - Very well done. It makes the periodic table fun for the first time. Filled with anecdotes from almost all of the elements in the periodic table, this book is sure to make for a captivating read. Sam Kean's humorous style of writing also adds to the overall entertainment of this text. Again very well done Sam Kean.

1. Interesting Book - The author does good job of breaking down complex historical theories about the peopling of The Americas. Ultimately, this is a textbook, albeit one that is accessible to non students. A heavy read, but in an interesting way. If you’re interested in archeological history even a little bit, you’ll enjoy it enough.

1. Much More Than a History Book… - If I could give this book a ten-star rating, I would. It is probably one of the most important books I have read in my life, although the title confirms a pet theory that, despite their brilliance, scientists are terrible at marketing. The First Scientist: Anaximander and his Legacy sounds like a dusty tome about an Ancient Greek philosopher. In a way, it is, but the book is so much broader in its scope that the title does not do the work justice. A title along the lines of, The Journey Towards the Truth would have much more sex-appeal and more aptly describe the arc of the this treatise. The story of Anaximander is used as wrapping for the real story in this book. He is held out as the father of a scientific approach to explaining the world, a revolutionary thinker who breaks with the tradition of ascribing the workings of nature to the hidden power of mystical beings given a myriad of names. He articulates the concept of theory following from observation (with the testing part coming later), a naturalistic search for cause and effect. As a student of history and science, I found this historical antecedent interesting, but far from the most compelling aspect of the story. The real power of this book, however, is in giving the readers a perspective on the tension, over time, in explanations of the universe in which we live that are based actions and words of a host of deities, as revealed though their supposed prophets, and that which is revealed through the power of human-kinds powers of observation, rational analysis and testing. The latter approach, of course, has brought us all the advancements in science, Doctor Rovelli posits that Anaximander is the father of this more analytical approach to exposing the world around us, the message of this book is much broader and more important than the story of this ancient figure from ancient Greece.

1. Brilliant Study of Light - Science and art in th century Delft, Netherlands paved new roads into the unseen worlds of things unseen before of this time. The author does a brilliant on of gathering, researching and beautifully telling the stories of how two contemporary men changed the way we see things we never perceive until they used light and optics to teach us to learn to see. The clever use of how parallel disciplines exposed the same conclusions is fascinating and enlightening. Well worth the read. I read it twice, something I never do.

1. Very enjoyable techie history read - Found this book to be excellent, albeit hard to understand at times, the author does a good job of explaining abstract, complicated topics, such as bits, quantum theory, mathematics. Definitely an interesting and somewhat challenging read, very informative, no pun intended! Highly recommended for any tech geeks, history buffs, educators, psychologists, and anyone interested math, physics, technology, programming, etc. Gleick is a great non-fiction writer! Found this after reading his Isaac Newton book.

2. worth the effort - I found it to be an excellent journey through the history of human communication. The book grabbed me right away with the "talking drums of Africa". There were only one or two times during the entire (lengthy) book when I thought the information was getting dense, but whose fault is that? Gleick titled the book "The Information".

3. Can you imagine not being able to imagine writing? - I was quite happy with the review that I painstakingly typed into my iPad over the last half hour. iBooks was also impressed. I know this because it immediately crashed and erased everything I wrote.
(it devoured my review. beep beep beep beep. it's kind of… a bummer) So, I suppose you'll have to take my (abbreviated) word for it - the book is very good. read it. The gist of my original review is this: Most history books, especially history of science, can't escape the condescension implicit to hindsight.
Gleick avoids it by thoroughly describing thought and perception in a world where the telephone (the dictionary. logic. the written word), is not missing, it's just… unimaginable.

4. Philosophical version of Gleick - Not typical Gleick. Some interesting history, but too much philosophical waxing. Those who are into this style will appreciate this work as it's expressed as a full symphony on information. Those who want something more concise, will find the work long albeit punctuated with some fascinating history. Because I belong to the latter category, I'm not sure I can recommend this to the fan of Gleick's previous work embodied by his books on chaos, and Feynman.

5. The Information - This a fantastic book! Anyone that has ZZZZZZ from reading it should take a nap and pick up Dan Brown.
I learned more and was amazed by the intellectual power of the author in making a very difficult topic understandable and interesting.
From beginning to end it is a tour de force!
Thanks, James Gleick. Jim Clark

1. Ambiguous ending - I wanted to be % sure that the pollutants that made the water smell and smoke that was only discharged at night were found to be UNDENIABLY the cause of so much illness, pain and heartache in Tom's River. Such is not the case! It's probably true but neither Union Carbide nor Ciba-Geigy admitted to any wrongdoing! And the amount of the settlement is still a secret. A disappointing ending for me.

2. A great, informative read - This book provides a good introduction to the many sides of discussion about environmental pollution and its impacts on the communities affected. The author does an excellent job of making the science and statistics easy to digest and has a conversational writing style that makes the material accessible and engaging. The book also gives us quite a bit to ponder about issues of pollution and contamination of natural resources necessary to sustain life.

1. Mixed feelings - Really good book, the connections between pivotal historic events and the characteristics of mere molecules are incredibly satisfying to learn about. The transitions between the end of a chapter and the beginning are definitely the best part as you not only see the progress of these Chemical compounds, but the progress of human history. I however have mixed feelings. I was told to read the book and complete some questions for an extra credit grade in my AP Chemistry class. I could not buy the book in paperback or hardcover so I proceeded to redeem a twenty-five dollar gift card and bought the book online ( as you may be able to tell). The world-renown Toronto music artist Drake released his highly-anticipated album "Views" the same weekend. To my dismay I read all electronic pages of this novel only to learn that all the questions could be answered by the introduction and the conclusion. I am not able to purchase Drake's new album at this current time. I am distraught with the circumstances i find myself in.

1. Solid read and great look into Zeppelin during their touring days - Very entertaining and a great look into touring with the band and their personal life. You'll like this book if you can answer yes to either of these statements: ) you liked the behind the scenes feel of "Almost Famous" or ) you read the sample and liked it... if you answered yes to either question you will thoroughly enjoy this book. Robert Cole (the author) has one helluvah story to tell!

1. I'm on my th read! - My favorite book. I got my first copy as a gift at least years ago. I've since given it as a gift twice and am about to read it again for the th time. It captured my interest in history and humanity, with insights on the effects various inventions played, and the some times limiting control those in positions of religious power had over the advancement of knowledge.

1. The Knife Man by Wendy Moore - Highly addictive reading! So absorbing that even the notes at the end are an interesting read!
A man so far ahead of his time! Mind-boggling to think of the “what-ifs” in his story; especially how much further advanced medicine might be had those who opposed him actually supported John Hunter instead.

2. The Knife Man - I am very disappointed because after two attempts at downloading this excellent book, I am only getting the first few chapters of it, and "error messages" where the other chapters should be. Having read it in hard copy, I must say that my iPad has butchered a fine read. Does Wendy Moore know what is happening to this book??? An electronic knife man attack.

1. The invention of air - Awesome read! Johnson does an eloquent job of connecting how advances in science, religious thought, and political thought are intertwined. Great story of Priestly and how he helped shape our country via his relationship with Ben Franklin and later Thomas Jefferson. His analysis of how history unfolds (both here as well as his books Emergence and his book on innovation) both make for fascinating reading.

2. A worthwhile read - I greatly enjoyed reading this account of the life and many pursuits of an Enlightenment thinker who played an important role in laying the foundation of early American science and philosophy. If only modern politicians would make as concerted an effort to incorporate science and rationalism into their policy-making as our patriarchs did!

1. Great book, too many typos, terrible figures - Great book, well written and provides good insight into the pivotal aspects in history that are often overlooked. Now, if somebody at Apple books and the publisher could PLEASE run the spell check before putting it out for sale, it would be easier to read. Almost every closing quotation mark shows as a garbled group of extra letters (rsquo). Where's the quality control? Also, why are all illustrations such bad images? Many are not much bigger than a postage stamp and poor quality. This would be five stars if not for the terrible quality control.
