1. Phil da man - to know that people think like him - - The comfort & insight shared crossing philosophical realms of unity, understanding the power of music, psychology of chemistry within a team of how unity prevails over ego to be the best. The coach of this magnitude who understands players like Rodman & how their contrarian contribution can be managed not in ole skool ways but connecting to them so it becomes their responsibility is once in a lifetime.
My ultimate respect for sincerity, vulnerability & the courage to incorporate his own style with Indian culture along w/ solid faith in God instills the soul into whatever Phil does.
When I was playing football in college, I was visiting my older brother in Lincoln park in Chicago on my way back from a summer program in Rome. When a attractive, spiritual gal that crossed paths with gave me a copy of “The Peaceful Warrior,”which she told me that Phil Jackson had given this book to some of his players. Dan Millman’s book had a profound impact on my life teaching me about checking in your ego; and putting the right energy & intent out there so where the right people come into your life at the precise time. (Well not exactly how it goes, but when tapped in correctly - the magic does happen).
Thanks Phil for truly an awesome book, where every pages I was memorizing your quotes while simultaneously sending them off to my colleagues along with former athlete buddies. Brandon Wilson- Malibu

2. Great Book! - I am proud to say that at yrs old is the first book i read from start to end page by page word by word and i learned so much about basketball but i also felt like i was part of this journey great insight on the zen practice and how a religion can be connected to a sport such as basketball thank u!!

3. Absolutely amazing! Step until Phil Jackson's world - This book was absolutely phenomenal. I enjoyed reading every single word.
The comparisons between Michael Jordan & Kobe Bryant were remarkable.
Phil Jackson goes on speaking about the triangle offense. The triangle offense led the Bulls to six championships victories.
The struggles between Kobe and Shaq were also extraordinary to read about.

4. Great read !! - As a fan of the sport of basketball, I must say this book has everything to make you understand the part in a different way. It makes you understand the train of the though that Phil Jackson has had with teaching these players about life and the game. Made me even more of a fan of Phil! It was just phenomenal!

5. Not unreadable - This book isn't terrible. I read it rather quickly, actually. My main issue with it is that it seems like a rehash of generic Phil Jackson ideology. The chapter comparing Kobe to Jordan was interesting, but felt like a blatant pandering for an ESPN headline. The last pages really have no momentum, however, I found the first half of the book to be interesting, albeit nothing new.

6. What?? - Listen to this guy el presidente...one day great michael and what kobe? You got it all mixed up and then you will endorse the book? I don't know what book you read man. Anyways it will be great when it comes out. Finally Phil decides to let everything be known about his convictions on his airiness and black mamba. If you are any way intrigued about the game then this book has to be a must collection

1. Must Read - Great book from Coach. I use to go to the games at the Capital Centre as a kid to watch and root for Georgetown. As I entered into adulthood, I listened to his radio show and learned many things. The book is truly a gift , and I learned a lot from reading it. Rest In Peace coach enjoy your sausage sandwich.

1. Great book that reiterates champion-oriented decisions in all avenues of life - Just as my title depicts, Coach Meyers reflects on what type of an attitude it takes to become and remain a champion, not just in football/sports, but in careers, family life, spiritual growth, etc.... He admits his faults, why they were faults, how he fixed them, and as a young s man, who has played football at a D collegiate level, it's a great book that epitomizes that being a champion applies to more than sports, but that the ultimate champion is one who relentlessly works to become better in ALL facets of life. Outstanding book for high school, collegiate athletes, business owners, and everyone else who wants to be a leader my example, not by the virtue of talk, because after all, talk is cheap' talk is very cheap. Would recommend to literally ANYONE WHO STRIVES TO BECOME NOT ONLY A BETTER PERSON, OVERALL, BUT WHO IS/WANTS TO BE A BETTER VISIONARY EXAMPLE, DIRECTING THE YOUTH TO BELIEVE AND SETTING THEM UP FOR SUCCESSFUL FUTURES IN ALL ENDEAVORS!

1. Go Blue - I loved it when Rich Rod was hired to bring a new breath of life to the Michigan offense. I knew he had a less than good defense to work with but never knew all the reasons why. This book does a fantastic job of showing why his defense suffered so badly. I believe if he had a better defense with the offense that was burgeoning he would still be at Michigan. Thank you Mr Bacon for illuminating the back biting that was going on and the difficulties that the coaching staff had to endure. Your book was fair showing what nasty things were said and done to the coaches and also fair in describing what troubles they brought on themselves. Thanks for all of the work that you and your team put into making this book, it was a great read.

2. Three and Out - This is a great read for any Michigan fan. A great look at what we all thought to be the darkest days of our beloved program. A look behind the curtain to show the blood sweat and tears that go into the day to day operation. A great understanding about a man that just never seemed to "fit".

3. Three and Out - John U. Bacon is a terrific writer and this is his best work yet. He, himself, is a 'Michigan Man', which makes it even more astonishing to learn about some of UM's shortcomings. Rich Rodriguez has some shortcomings of his own (don't we all) but I now look at him in a different light. Great book!
2012-08-03
4. As Inside As You Can Get! - Mr. Bacon was given access to the innermost and comprehensive details of a particular stretch of a coach's career. The term "in-depth" doesn't do justice to this narrative of three years gone horribly, and unfairly, wrong. If you don't feel the emotion of coaches, staffers and players as they struggle to overcome an incredible amount of adversity, then you haven't paid close attention to what you're reading. I've never read a sports book that brought me this close to the day-to-day, week-to-week trials and tribulations of a group of characters that I think you will end up truly knowing and caring about. Highly recommend.

5. Three and Out a Must read... especially for Michigan fans. - John U. Bacon's book, Three and Out, is a must read for Michigan Fans and a great book for even the casual non-fiction reader. It extends to the reader unprecedented access into the University of Michigan's football team, athletic program, coaching staff and player's lives from until . Even knowing the final outcome, I found myself fascinated by every little detail of which, without this book, even the most diehard fan would not have been aware.

6. Three and Out a great read! - As a long time Michigan fan and local resident, the insight into the program during the RichRod years was fantastic. It sure gave me a different view of the University, the program, and former Coach Lloyd Carr. While Bacon may be persona non grata now around Schembechler Hall, he deserves big kudos for a great book, and RichRod deserves some apology from the Michigan Men who worked to submarine his stay at Michigan.

7. More than just about a coach - If you are interested in how the college football machine works, this is the book for you. As I said in the title, it is more than just about a coach, it is about a culture and how that culture can create the atmosphere it desires irregardless of consequences to whomever. It shines a lot of light why the atrocities at Penn state and Syracuse occured through it's depiction of a university and it's attitudes toward quote "outsiders". Being a huge Michigan fan, I wanted to know really what went wrong in the Rich Rod era. I thought he would be what the program needed to get to the next level in the college football arena. This book illustrates what happened and how the marriage of UM and Rich Rod was doomed almost from day one.

8. Answers to so many questions ... - Filled in so many blank spaces in my understanding of what happened with this great coach and this great University ... Honesty once again proves itself to be the best way to handle any situation ... It isn't always pretty ... But it is always the right thing to do ... I am not an alum and in fact no longer even live in Michigan ... but I am a huge fan and was a huge fan of Rich Rod from Tulane, Clemson and West Virginia ... I was so very excited when he became our new Head Coach ... And I was so utterly confused and disgusted at how bad things turned out ... In the end I was a lot like RR ... Just glad it was finally over ... Sometimes things just aren't meant to be ... I certainly wish him and his former staff all the best ... I will root for Arizona now that he is the coach ... And I learned a HUGE life lesson about how much we all need support from those around us ... No matter who we are ... Thank you RR ... Some of us will remember you fondly ... Go Blue !!!

9. GREAT BOOK! - As a more NFL oriented football fan who grew up in Big Ten country (Illinois) I understood the mystique of Michigan and had a very small amount of knowledge about Rich Rodriguez and his tenure at West Virginia/Michigan. This book was amazingly insightful and well written. Any fan of football, college sports or good storytelling should read this.

10. Awesome Book - This is an awesome book. As a fan of a rival Big Ten team, I loved watching the Vaunted Michigan football program fall from grace, but after reading this book, I have come to the realization that, as is the case most often it is the bureaucracy that brought the program to it's knees. Brady Hoke is certainly reaping the benefits of the work RichRod and his staff did to rebuild a program that Carr had let slip towards mediocrity. I sincerely had a difficult time putting the book down and read it in days! It was very insightful and has certainly altered my opinions in a positive way of Coach Rodriguez, Denard Robinson and the Michigan football players. It opened my eyes a bit about Mary Sue Coleman (whom I had admired when she was at the University of Iowa), and Purdue Coach Danny Hope. It also cemented my feelings about the arrogance of MSU Coach Mark Dantonio. The book also painted a ver clear picture of arrogance and hypocrisy among the sports media. Overall, this book was an awesome read, and I would recommend it for any college football fan, but especially any fan of The Big Ten!

11. Great - Three & Out was a terrific read. It gives the reader great insight into all the issues a major college football coach deals with, plus good background information on Coach Rodriguez & Michigan. Good luck to Coach Rodriguez at Arizona, if you need an assistant give me a call! Arizona will get to a Rose Bowl under RichRod.
2011-11-26
12. A Different Opinion - I was one who would have fired Rich Rodriguez after two years. As a lifelong Michigan fan, I had hoped for the best for Rich Rod. But after two seasons, it didn't appear that he was to be successful. What this book described was the obstacles he fought to overcome that were placed by other so-called Michigan fans. For that I am deeply sorry. The book also describes a good guy, a good husband, a good father and a good boss. I sincerely hope he is a success at the University of Arizona.

13. Three and out - Inside look at the pressures of college football. Gives you an appreciation for the incredible amount of work put forth by the players and coaches. It is also a reminder that people see and believe what they want to see and believe as much as reality itself. Once labeled, whether positive or negative, people tend to pay most attention to the facts that support the label. The losers in this story were more numerous than the winners. Among those receiving blame for the teams performance on the field outside of the coaches and players were former coach Carr, AD Martin, and the stodgy Michigan alumni who viewed a West Virginia man as less than an equal. As for coach rodriguez, the author lays some blame on him, but overall paints a picture of a quality man working hard and doing his best. You are with the expectation that coach Rodriguez will excel in future coaching jobs. The book was an easy read. It has it's share of less than sunny stories, but is still a book I recommend.

14. Three and out - As a staunch Michigan fan and one that considers Michigan football to be nearly a religion, I suppose I had high expectations upon picking this book up for the first time. Without a doubt it exceeded all my hopes. I only wish it had gone on for another pages. Bacon had the opportunity of a lifetime, in my opinion, and he delivered on every level. I had to have it the very first day it went on sale and now I will recommend it to all my friends. If you are a fan of sports, Michigan football or just want to read a compelling story, definitely grab this book. Outstanding!!!!!!

15. Essential read for any "Michigan Man" (or woman) - I have to admit that I approached this book with some trepidation - what awful secrets were going to be revealed and cause me even greater deprerssion over the state of our once mighty football program? I am pleased to report that I found this to be a riveting insider's tale of what REALLY went on in Ann Arbor with OUR team over the past several years. The Rich Rod era is over, and I now have a much greater understanding of why he failed, why OUR family let him down and what needs to happen to ensure that this nightmare finally ends. Rich Rod comes off as a very decent guy and a damned good football coach whose tenure at Michigan was cursed from the get go. The book tells a very balanced tale, and there is plenty of blame to spread around for the lack of Ws. The Free Press writers and editors truly are as despicable as we all suspected, Lloyd Carr is far from the saint we thought he was, Bill Martin was a great facilities builder but generally lousy AD, Bo is greatly missed by all, and Dave Brandon and Brady Hoke ARE the right guys to move the program forward. I had no idea that Rick Leach, my boyhood idol, grew up to be such a stand up guy. I am now a Rich Rod fan and, as a Michigan man, I will cheer him on wherever he ends up. Go Blue!

1. For every man - I have been a high school teacher and football coach for years and this is my second time reading this great work. I used these exact same principles to run my own football program for five years. My own two sons played for me in the program I set up using the Build Men for Others principle. I was proud of what we built and watching my sons and all the young men who we coached blossom into servants of others. This is BY FAR the best book for all teacher/coaches. The BONUS is how the messages helped my own relationship with my dad. We are closer now than ever before and I can honestly say my year old Dad is my best friend now! Thank you Joe, Biff and Jeffery to showing us that Loving is the way.

2. A good book - This book was a nice book to. Read but in the beginning was hard to continue read as there wasn't much a story grabber, but later in the book and near the end the book kept making me come back over and over, I have to say that in the beginning I would rate this book a out of but at the end I would rate a . out of the book showed how being a man isn't about how much money you made or how strong you where it's all about relationships, and at the end of the book it shows just how important relationships truly are to people.

1. The Matheny Manifesto - Every adult who has kids in sports should read this book. It should be required reading for every youth league baseball coach. I admit I caught myself coaching my two boys from the stands, as I have taught both of them how to throw, how to catch, how to swing a bat, and how to pitch - including situational pitching. After reading this book, I now enjoy watching my boy's games much more because I know they have the tools to succeed. Now I just sit back and watch them play and find it's a lot more fun and much less stressful.
I had the distinct pleasure of having met Mr. Matheny on a couple of occasions when he played for the Giants. We found him to be engaging and would talk baseball with us, and truly made our day doing so. Mike truly walks the walk.

2. Fantastic! - It was a moment of weakness when this die-hard Cubs fan purchased this book. But as a father to three boys who inherited a love for baseball, I was given Mike's five page letter by a good friend. This is a must read for every parent of young athletes as well as all baseball fans (including Cub fans). Thank you, Mike, for giving your voice about baseball, but more importantly about life.

3. Principles - I played baseball for many years. Into my 's until my back gave out from an old injury. Now with kids of my own I found this book not only to be a great book about playing the game the right way, but also a way to teach my kids about life. There is a way to win and lose with pride and dignity. Many of his stories have helped to remind me of those principles I want to instill in my own kids.

4. The right way - As a travel baseball program director and manager this book (and mike's leadership in writing his letter) has helped me validate my beliefs further about how to coach players 'the right way'. Our goals as selfless leaders are to utilize the game to teach life's lessons and impart some wisdom. As you said so perfectly, we will win a few and we will lose a few but we will always do it with the utmost class. Thank you Mike... I hope to meet you someday to shake your hand. Not as a fan but as a fellow coach learning to better himself. Coach Gregory - St. Pete Tsunami

5. Inspirational book - The author does a very good job of explaining some of the issues affecting young children in athletics today. All too often, we see over zealous parents screaming at their children, opposing players, coaches, umpires, and even other parents. The children lose the meaning of organized sports when they are pressured to "win at all costs" in little league.
2015-07-02
6. Pure Class - This book should be required reading for all parents and grandparents of children playing youth sports. All coaches of youth teams will benefit too! This book would have served me well years ago when my son played on a traveling soccer team. Thanks Mike for sharing with us and Go Cardinals!

1. Clever - As an informal writing style, the book automatically catches a reader's attention. The dumbfounding ideas sportsmen have believed for ages are put to the test, and proved to be untrue. New words are added to an everyday vocabulary such as: feedback, coach, and purposeful practice. Not-so- new theories are given very new abilities like the lightning bolt theory of creativity and the year rule. Coaches of all sports, players of all activities, and everyday humans should be taught of these inexplicably contemporary and colorful convictions. There is no denying the authenticity of the book, while the extensive research behind it attests to the validity of the central argument.

2. A good factual read... - I enjoyed this book although the prices on these books at Apple's store are way too steep!!! The book follows my belief that talent is not some magical gift from an almighty, but it comes from a lot of hard work and perseverance. People like to believe in prodigies and overnight successes, but that is an extremely false and dim-witted belief. It's plain lazy!!! This book is well cited and based on factual scientific studies.
2010-07-05
3. Fascinating - A fascinating look at how true talent isn't something bred, but nurtured with concrete examples across sport and life. Sometimes inspirational and at all times informative, BOUNCE will leave you pondering your own position in the world and how it can be improved on in one simple, but painstaking way: with hard work and conscious effort.

1. Intangibles - Winnin the Mental Game in Baseball and in Life - Geoff Miller did a masterful job of distilling an intricate subject matter like the mindgame that is such an integral part of the game of baseball, into language and illustrations easily and clearly understood by players of all ages. It was a fun read and should be required reading for all high school and college baseball players.

2. Awesome. Great tool for any athlete! - Arguably the most important part of an athletes success is their ability to control the mental aspect of their game. This book offers great insight into just that. Relevant lessons and strategies are explained to strengthen a players mental game. The stories alone in this book make it a very enjoyable read. A must have for players looking to take their game to the next level!

3. Great tool for those playing and for those who aspire to play. - In baseball talent, while essential, is only part of the equation for success. "Intangibles" gives great insight in to what it takes to be a complete athlete. Stories of real professionals that intrigue you as well as strategies to help you develop the mentality to be your best is at the core of what this book is about. I've been blessed to play this game for a living for years now. The process of developing the needed mindset to last that long is never ending. Working with Geoff personally and now reading "Intangibles" has assisted in that development. I love this book for players, coaches and parents. Our sport is so competitive, talent alone won't get you to the top. Geoff helps his reader to understand that and build a mental skill set that will.

1. Don't miss out - This is an amazingly simplified coach to QB communication system that can simplify every aspect of your passing game. Not only can your QB learn to understand what he is seeing, he can articulate it too. Also, while not thoroughly pointed out in this book, it is immensely powerful for receiver and QB synchronization. I am excited to read it again and truly look forward to using the R system to it's fullest potential this fall!!! Great read, amazingly detailed and laid out in way to you can comprehend!!

1. If you like Karl before...you won't after reading the book - It's an interesting read. It's well written and entertaining. It will make you hate Karl, though. His lack of ownership of his faults is nearly comical. Yes, he is a world class coach if you need a guy for half a season or maybe even two. After that, he loses his players. In this book he goes into depth about his different jobs, but nearly always blames the players. How about his inability to win a play off game? Not his fault. The disaster at the World Cup? Not his fault. He throws so many people under the bus that it is entertaining. You just have to get past his ego and warped reality about his career.

2. Furious George deserves high praise - I love how brash Karl is towards something he doesnt care about or disagrees with . There's a few times during the story where readers might think his opinions and views, especially towards a player(s) he has coached, were drastically honest, but isnt drama what we are looking for in a story/book?
