1. The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman - Ms. Fadiman gently gained my trust as she led me to love those whose story she masterfully shares. From the beginning it was apparent Lia Lee's life would be hard to read and would be for me as Ms. Fadiman says, "that of the many sadnesses in the world that I wish could be righted, your life is the one I think of most often in the small hours of the night.” As a high school teacher I've been blessed to teach and care for many immigrant teens whose stories make much better sense to me now having read and been forever changed by this story. Thank you through many tears.

2. Hmmm... - I don't really know what to think of it. The message of the book is about cultural differences and how we should accept and try to understand other cultures. I got pretty bored reading all the details of Lia's medical history, especially all the different prescriptions. The author gave way too much information about childbirth that was really completely irrelevant to Lia's story. Also there was a bunch of boring stuff about why the Hmong went to Merced, California. But what bugged me the most was that the author praised everything about Hmong culture except that they liked to have large families. Obviously she cannot accept the idea of not using birth control and gives an impression that the Hmong are inferior because most of them don't use it. If it's a woman's body and it's her choice why is it unacceptable for her to choose to have ten or more kids?

3. Must Read - This story takes place where I'm from and my family also struggled with western medicine and our ancestral shamanism ways. My sister was born with a hole in her heart and the doctors told my parents she needed a heart transplant or would die. The Hmong people do not believe in transplants. This was mid 's where many doctors still could not understand why or how a Hmong parent didn't want to help their child. She got some western care at the Fresno children's hospital but not what she needed medically and sadly, her heart gave up at the age of , the night before my th birthday. I I'll never forget that night. Just like this family, my family truly believed they were doing the best thing for their child whether the doctors believed it or not. The two cultures just can't find an even ground.

1. So-So - The book seemed to me to be written with a very liberal slant. It pointed out how the really wealthy control politics, commerce and the general attitudes of society. It shows that do-gooders mostly make sure their own well-being is the most important thing that comes first. Not much will ever change because the leaders on both sides of the aisle are puppets to corporate America,

1. Thought provoking and tedious - A thought provoking book, but not easy to read. But if you are interested in history or how social systems are organized, I would recommend it. Pros: Lots of intriguing examples of prehistory and anthropology that I had never heard of. Especially striking to me: monumental constructions by apparent hunter-gatherer societies, large cities with little to no evidence of societal stratification or central rule, slave-holding indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest, societies that seasonally alternate between harsh, centralized rule from above and egalitarian, peaceful, and cooperative arrangements for the rest of the year. There are also intriguing ideas about how accepted patterns of historical change are probably wrong and that enlightenment values of liberty may actually have their origin in the political thinking of indigenous peoples in North America, originating in response to the overthrow of a violent, authoritarian culture in the Southeast of what is now the US. Cons: Hard to tell at times where established fact ends and speculation starts and if some speculation turns into pure fantasy. There is a lot of inference of the motivations of pre-historic people that strikes me as very creative. Some of the criticism of the work of other authors came across as more of an academic feud than a dispassionate analysis of available evidence. Lots of dumping on the blinders and misconceptions other researchers have, and - at least in one case - an argument against another researcher’s ideas that relies on selective quotes and misrepresentation (and that in one of the few cases where I actually know enough to make an independent judgement). A general style that lays out the big, radical concepts first and then brings in evidence - which makes me concerned that the ideology came first and then evidence was gathered to support it. Nevertheless:
Overall, my impression is very positive. This book made me think, and I learned a lot. I am inspired to go to different sources and follow up. I will likely reread this book at some point.

1. This is a great book - both historical and futuristic in its dealing of race, “cool” & religion! - This is a pretty great book - both historical and futuristic in its dealing of race, hip hop, what being “cool” really means & religion.
I had to read this book for a class and I totally loved it. It’s was a big eye opener and really should be read by everyone. It is easy to read and understand and the little skits in it are just great. I didn’t know this was available here on iBooks. I would much rather have bought this than renting from the the university book store.

1. Transformative! - A startlingly courageous book. The empathy and compassion that Odets has for his subject is visceral. “Out of the Shadows” is one of the most transformative books I’ve ever encountered and deserves to be widely read. Give it as a gift to someone you care about; I already have.
