1. This album made me happy during a difficult time. - I bought this cassette in the year after I got divorced and I was feeling pretty lonely, vulnerable, and heart broken. It just so happened that John Prine wrote the songs on this album right after he got divorced and he was feeling pretty lonely, vulnerable, and heart broken. John Prine said he wrote these songs based on what he was feeling and going through during that time. So I was able to relate to these songs which comforted me. John chose to find and write about the humor in finding himself divorced and single again and all of the crazy things that single people have to go through when trying to start all over again, in this new and strange phase in their lives, and all of the crazy thoughts that go through your head as expressed in the songs "We Are The Lonely", "Leave The Lights On", "Same Thing Happened To Me" and "Big Fat Love". You can always find something funny in every tough situation. He sings light heartedly as he pokes fun at the sad, sick, happy and funny times he had in past failed relationships and what he learned as summed up in the songs, "Lake Marie", "Quit Hollerin' At Me", and "Humidity Built The Snowman". He also has a positive and happy outlook towards the future as expressed in the upbeat first and second songs on the album "New Train" and "Ain't Hurt'n nobody" and also "Day is Done". He hopes that things will turn out better when he gets another shot at the good life, and/or another relationship. The lyrics to these songs are very witty and humorous and thought provoking, which is consistent with all of John Prine's songs. These are very catchy tunes. These songs will get stuck in your head and you will find your self singing them over and over again. I literally wore this cassette tape out from listening to it so much.

1. Disappointed - Been a fan for many years, Ryan was a breathe of fresh air whenever I came across him. Mescalito, roadhouse sun and junky star are some of my favorite albums of all time but this album didn’t do it. This was the step in the wrong direction, politics and crap like that isn’t what anybody wanted. We want the kind of music that came from Wishbone Saloon to Junky Star!!! Please see the light RB

2. dang... - A lot of people may not like this album because of “political tones”. Bingham has always been somewhat political, if you actually listen to his lyrics. I don’t mind that. You should never expect an artist to stay away from politics. Art is an expression of the world around us. Unfortunately this album is just not my favorite. It’s actually my least favorite tied with Tomorrowland. I have followed since the beginning (literally, since Mescalito times) and listen to his music almost daily. I just can’t get behind this one. Honestly it was sort of hard to listen to because it felt nothing like him. His unique voice is the only remaining “Bingham-ism” of the past. I am very aware artists grow and change with time, and that can be a good thing, but this one feels forced. Not to mention very mumbly... half the time I had no idea what he was saying so I had to pull up all the lyrics as I listened. A lot of his newer following may like it because there are some catchy tunes sprinkled in there (wolves, jingle & go) but for those of us who have been listening for a while and are used to his original sound, it felt very contrived and foreign. I was looking forward to this album for a long time but I can already tell I will be archiving this one and going back to the good old tried and trues. Hard times, ya’all. Still love him though.

3. Disappointed - I’ll never get back the time I spent listening to this album. I could have been listening to Mescalito, Junky Star, or Roadhouse Sun instead. Ryan is capable of some really great music as his first three albums (or four, if you count Wishbone Saloon) demonstrate. Unfortunately, this album and Tomorrowland are terrible, and Fear and Saturday Night is only marginal.

4. Dylanesque! - Too many people are knocking this release based on their political views differing from those of the artist. Folk and roots music have a long political tradition, and there’s nothing more American than that - what good is freedom of speech if you can’t express yourself? This is a well written and well performed album. Particularly love “Wolves”....check it out.

5. SGlow - Been a fan for a long time. Mescalito is one of my favorite albums ever, but this album is weird...Ryan’s politics & support of radical left policies can’t be good for business considering his fan base. Everyone has a right to express their views, but as a entertainer those can come at a cost.
2019-02-21
6. Why??? - American Love Song, with a side of bashing the President and conservative political views. I don’t care which side a songwriter is on, don’t know why you would want to split a wedge between your fans like that. We already get that from everywhere else, it’s nice to escape it in music. I like a couple of the non political songs.

7. Better with each listen.. - I'm as big of a Mescalito fan as there is. Similarly, Tomorrowland is my least fave. This stacks closer to Mescalito on the spectrum. More bluesy, more soul. Less Texas roots "Americana" than previous albums. But songs are all enjoyable. Don't get fooled by some of the "too political" comments. Not fair criticism. I was looking forward to this album for a long time. I was admittedly a little let down upon first listen. But I've listened a few more times and it's growing on me for sure. The middle of the album is stacked. You know he will LAY IT DOWN live. Don't miss him if he's passing through.

8. Not his best - Fear and Saturday night was a huge bounce back for Ryan but this album is another step back. There’s a few good songs on this album and that’s why I’ll give it three stars. But overall the album is pretty erratic. The use of gospel style singers throughout the album is obnoxious. The political undertones are a bit pretentious. It’s like Tomorrowland, but slightly better. Ryan should stick to the style he had with Mescalito and the Dead Horses.

9. Oh you know...that’s how I Jingle and Go... - Have been eagerly awaiting being able to listen to this new music from Ryan Bingham after seeing him sing some of the songs live in November. Listening to Jingle and Go again does not disappoint. Catchy lyrics, something you want to sing along to. I cannot wait to listen to the entire record. Ryan just keeps getting better and better. Adding to this after listening to the entire album...love, love, love it all.

10. Here comes another one!!! - Been listening to this guy for over yrs. from small time rodeos to huge venues. He’s a true troubadour in every sense of the word... and getting better with every album... would love to see T-Bone Burnett produce a whole album of his... can’t wait for the whole album...

1. My Goto John Prine Album - I've been a JP fan for a long time and seen him numerous times. This is the album that I play the most. It has all his moods including that Prine poignant poetry. I can sing along with all of them so I often play this while doing chores. Nobody but John can make an album like this. Makes me feel like his BFF.

1. Grammy winning & SO Deserved! - Listen to this people, please! His earlier albums are masterworks, yes, but this album is more accessible and terrific introduction for anyone wondering why John Prine is so revered. This music is varied, sweet, fun, sad and always unique. Enjoy this one and then go deeper and investigate his other masterworks. There is no one else like him and never will be, I can safely say.

1. Next best thing to seeing Ryan play live - I've been fortunate to see Ryan play live several times and this album captures the energy and personality of a Ryan Bingham show perfectly. It's a great mix of old and new tunes. Love the slowed down version of Southside of Heaven...Ryan's emotional singing and Richard Bowden's gorgeous fiddle playing in the middle of the song make it a standout. There's not a song on this record that is out of place. Just great music by a great guy.

1. A Revelation! - Simply beautiful, unattached from expectations delivering a soulful exacting punch to all music sensibility. I don't know who these ladies are but I can't stop listening to this album on NPRs First Listen. I look forward to learning more about who these gals are and of course the records they've released.

2. Sisters - I have been a fan of both Allison and Shelby for a long time. This first taste of what to look forward to on the album is a good one. Not Dark Yet sounds like a Shelby song looking forward to Allison's contributions. Both great artists but i lean towards Allison as better songwriter and Shelby the more versitle vocalist. Together this album should be a can't miss as this song does nothing to discourage that sentiment.

1. Child Ballads - Great album. However, the version of "Tam Lin" leaves out some important parts of the narrative. First, Janet comes to Carterhaugh seeking an herbal abortificant, which may help to explain Tam's displeasure. Tam Lin is a changeling—that is, he is a human that was exchanged in the cradle for one of The Folk and raised as one of them. Every years, The Folk must pay a tithe to hell. This year, Tam fears it is him. The Fey troop rides out every Halloween, and Tam hopes to escape by having Janet hold him while the Fey queen tries to get her to let go by the transformations described in the song. When they must ride on, the queen wishes she "…had plucked out thy twa grey een (eyes) and put in twa o' wood…" so that, escaped, he had not seen the secrets of fairyland.

1. Incomplete - Man, I hate to give this album one star, it’s a star album or I wouldn’t have bought it. However, Apple has cut short a song or two, they just end abruptly…it really really ruins the album. Never would have bought the whole thing if I had paid attention to an earlier review warning me. Please, please…Apple please fix this.

2. Incomplete - Todd Snider is incredible, this album is incredible. I would be more then willing to give out stars to this album. The reason I'm not giving it stars is because once again, Apple and iTunes have failed to put together a full album. The song "Long Year" cuts off mid track. Well done Apple.

I bought this, praying that John beats this dread virus and has a full recovery from it. Sending some of the love John gave us, back to him while praying for his complete recovery. 1. Life-giving - I think the beauty of Carrie Newcomer's music & lyrics--this newest album entitled "A Permeable Life" included--is found in the balance she creates between reality & hope. She acknowledges, faces, & even embraces tension, hurt, & pain, but she also gentle extends to her listeners hope & Light.

2. Oh my goodness! - Just when you think Carrie has said it all, she creates another set of poetic images about the ways of the heart. A master guitarist, with her own capos and tunings, her strings resonate with deep emotional stirrings. I have been waiting for Light in the Window to come out on CD since I heard her sing it in a concert in NC. I thought I needed that song then, but it arrived with even better timing on this album. Forever Ray is the sweetest life-love song ever. Every Little Bit will lift your heart … there is a song on this CD for everyone. Carrie's music has become wiser and deeper over the years, no doubt because she immerses so much of her self into connections with real people in real places. Wherever she goes, she leaves a richer more graceful life in her wake. Thank you, Carrie, for another beautiful soundtrack for living.

3. Outstanding, as always - Another stellar success. I absolutely cannot get enough of Carrie’s songs and music. Her work speaks to my very being in ways that are difficult to articulate. She knows just how to say what I often cannot find the words to express, and her music allows me to express those things through her. For that I am most grateful. I am so in the moment when listening to her music. And this album is no exception. The simple. The profound. It’s all here.

4. A magnificent CD you will play again & again & again! - Carrie Newcomer is the most insightful and lyrical singer-songwriter I know—always attuned to the still, small voice of the soul that’s so often muffled by the noise of the world. In this superb collection of new work, she engages us in a conversation about what it means to be human, vulnerable to the whole of life, learning to love. The poems to which she gives voice in these songs comprise the musical score of a life lived fully and well. A magnificent CD that you will play again and again and again!
2014-04-03
5. High marks - Carrie just never misses her mark. She continues to pave a path of the wonders in our everyday life and sing her quiet protests against the injustice in our world, while reminding us of the inherent good in all of us. This lady has become the soundtrack of my life and I am a much better person for it !

1. A true hero of modern music. - wow. Richie Havens is really, incredibly good. I type this for you, the curious listener - too young to discover this upon its release. This music is so unfashionable now, so forgotten. The only way for you to even hear about it is probably by surfing through itunes or finding it among the dwindling stacks of your parents LPs. Bloggers don't write about this. Pitchfork doesn't commemorate this. To discover this music, you must abandon any hip ties you thought you had. And you'll be so glad you did. There was a time and place for music like this, but after decades, you can find that it still holds so much emotion that the only word for it, is TIMELESS.

2. Havens Three Dimensional Soul - This is an album I had owned on vinyl and liked very much during the summer of .
I lost the album and had not heard the performances since, and frankly was not expecting much.
To my fantastic if maudlin shock, not only do Richie's recordings still hold up, his version of HERE COMES THE SUN literally transported me, in every dimension, back to when I was a third the age I am now, as the performance, like those we love but don't hear for years, was enough to make me listen to it on a loop. I played that one song alone twelve times enjoying every nuance of soul and guts best-version-by-far of the Harrison pop-masterpiece, seriously, amazed how I was literally transported back to " again." This morning I woke up in a sweet emotional state and almost cried when I read a simple note from my wife - not until I looked at my iPod this morning did I realize: ALARM CLOCK brought back memories, mainly very sweet, of which I'd completely forgotten.
I won't tell anyone what to listen to - but if you love Here Comes The Sun and have never heard of Richie Havens' version, you are cheating yourself by not at least checking out that song. /Ian Andrew Schneider/

3. Mr. Havens is an American Musical Hero - This Disc is great. Richie Havens is totaly underated as an artist and musical icon. He has one of the greatest voices in the history of modern rock music. He deserves a new album of new songs and production from a top producer like say. Rick Rubin. Like the Johnny Cash albums and the new Neil Diamond disc. Havens is the same quality of artist. Let's hope that he get's the production and respect he deserves.

1. Judy still "has it"! and then some :) - Must admit I was a little bit skeptical when I saw that Judy had released a new album. Not everyone's voice ages gracefully as we all know; some artists are still touring who should have retired by now..but Judy Collins is certainly not one of them! She still has it and is well worth your time and money. Buy this peaceful and inspirational album with confidence and enjoy it for years alongside her other memorable work! Congratulations, Judy, and thank you for helping inspire us all these many years!
I still remember when you were touring with Arlo in at Saratoga the night he was so stoned, he wasted minutes on stage comparing the universe to various things.... the audience got restless...then you came on and saved the evening for us all!

1. Great album, great person, great everything - I had the pleasure of seeing Leif open up for William Fitzsimmons at Union Station earlier this summer. I hadn’t heard of him before the show, and I was blown away. Standing no more than about five feet from him playing was absolutely astounding. So after the show, I bought this album on vinyl, and got to chat with Leif for a while (we bonded on our love of seafood, which Leif, if you ever happen to be reading this, Woody’s is still a go to spot in Maryland). The album is one of the best I’ve bought this year. Each song could stand on its own as great, but together it stands as a solid piece of beautiful music. And if you get the chance to purchase this in vinyl form, your ears will thank you.

1. CREEQUE ALLEY - FALSE LISTING as MONO SINGLE - To those who are familiar with these classic M&P's songs will note that the HORN SECTION which backed-up the group is MISSING from this so called "MONO SINLE) track. This is NOT the mono single but some sort of "Alternate Mix Take". Probably from an acetate where the producer then decided the horns were needed. I would PASS on buying this track. It's as muddy as the stereo mix.

1. Runrig Never Fails To Disappoint - It started with "Edge of the World" on Pandora, but quickly turned into an obession. These guys are amazing, their music is full of emotion and really captures the rich cultural aspects of their scottish heritage. I wish we had more music like this in America, not that mainstream trash that society tries to push onto everyone. This is legit, and there are few bands in America that can match the quality of music Runrig makes.

1. Soundtrack to my life! - Classic J Band sound. You can't not be happy when listening to their completely blend of musical styles. You won't be disappointed, and you'll want to go back and buy all of their albums. Thank you J Band, and please don't stop producing music like you have over the last years. It has become the soundtrack to my life.

2. Must Have - J Band has done it again with another must have piece of art. I don't know how this band is not atop music scenes, but every person that I introduce J Band to stops and says "who was that again?". Their Carribean feel mixed with Rusted Root and Bob Dylan/Mumford and Son makes them a truly unique mix. They are a treasure and candy to your ears, you will find yourself listening to Find Our Way Out and Belly of the Beast repeatedly. Hey Na Na Na just hits it's grove and you want it to be longer. I'm on the East Coast but I'm going to head to Hermosa Beach one of these days for a live show. They are the best kept secret and most talented indie band out there.

1. Nostalgic brilliance - This album is reminiscent of your family home; it has many memorable, intricate, beautiful rooms and details that you never forget even as you grow older - it has a timeless and nostalgic presence of warmth, heartbreak and longing. Every song triggers various emotions but they never fail to make you feel something powerful. It is also perfect to drive to because of this. The songwriting and talent is combined with an great production that just separates it from any Americana you have ever heard. What a gem.

2. The Cerny Brothers wake up the Sleeping Giant inside. - Simply brilliant is this new release by The Cerny Brothers. There is not one song I would choose to skip over as each and every song oozes the talent this band possesses. Raw pain or extreme happiness comes through in the lyrics and voices, steering you towards feeling just what the musicians/writers want you to feel, an attachment to something you've felt before. The vocal range of the lead singer takes you to his highest and lowest. And he means what he says. It's Americana rock at it's best. This album makes me feel like it was written and recorded just for me.

1. Welcome back! - A departure from the last two releases, Up On High is a collection of beautifully constructed melodies with stripped down production; sonically capturing the essence of their live show. This allows the music to shine through. “Filigree”, “Wanted, Never Asked” and “Lost (in Your Eyes)” are standouts and although we waited a long time for new music, it was totally worth it.
