1. Probably most talented to come out of the 's - As a fan of good music, I did not realize the talent that Stills until at a concert. I feel he is very under rate as a guitarist. Too think, he at was at one time requested by Jimi Hendrix to play bass for The Experience, then rhythm guitar as a bass player was found. Jimi thought he was a good match against his playing. Too bad that never happened. We got a glimpse of that from Stills st album, Old Times Good Times. Back to this album, really raw. You don't hear material like this nowadays. Things are sampled and edited because it is easy to do so. It is just Stills with his guitar with the tape recording. I recommend it if you are a fan of Stills, CSN, CSNY, Buffalo Springfield and most of all - great music.

2. Classics in the Making - This album is worth having merely for the fact that you get to hear the origins of songs -- or portions of lyrics -- that ultimately wound up on five different albums featuring Mr. Stills. And to think they were all there in before he hooked up with Nash and Crosby. I like the raw element to these takes, especially listening to Stephen tuning his guitar just before breaking into the opening of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, not to mention hearing Stephen's contribution to Wooden Ships before it merged with Crosby's and Kanter's lyrics. The previously unreleased cuts are gems as well, and it's a treat to hear them nearly years after he first laid them down on tape. This is a worthy purchase for any Stills fan.

3. Great album, except for one song - I love this album, everyone song melts my face, but the version of Treetop Flyer that is on this album is different then ones ive heard before, Its lacking the chorus where he sings of being in vietnam and flying one more job, for some reason, that version of the song speaks to me so much more, i think it just adds something in there. Anyway, still a great album, do not let my opinion of it stop you from buying it!

4. Surprised - I guess you can call me old school as I like to actually shop at the physical store and hold the cd in my hand. Goes back to the days when I could buy albums. This one really surprised me when I found it hiding there. Vintage stuff like this happens once in a great while. He is quite a talent.

5. Incredible - Wow, one of the best albums I've ever bought, hands down. Its great to hear such a simple, basic sound with a guy and a guitar, especially because Stills has some really unique sounds on the guitar and, in my opinion, one of the coolest sounding singing voices. Its also pretty amazing to hear the first cuts of some of the most popular CSNY songs (Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Helplessly Hoping, and Wooden Ships). And of course treetop flyer is timeless. This is a must buy.

6. string perfection - "all i know is what you tell me is" superb! Very pure and raw. Today's folk singers cannot compare! The release drove me back to research the still's songbook and I rediscovered "Bluebird." Wooden Ships as an acoustic or electric version is perfection. Stills carried CSNY consistently throughout their careers. Of course Neil did to when he was involved.

7. The Leader of the Band - Stills...leader of Buffalo Springfield, CSN, CSN&Y. The voice and the guitar that distinguishes these groups and sets Stills head and shoulders above the majority of his contemporaries. God, weren't those the days! What music! What honesty and passion. Sigh....guess I'm just gettin older too.

8. Real Goosebump Material - Pardon my emotion, but I nearly cried when I discovered this album on iTunes. What a GIFT. This album is raw, pure, and in hindsight, absolutely astonishing. An exquisite collection of early material in a 'rustic' format, Just Roll Tape gives the listener the opportunity to savor some of Stills overly mastered hits in the way he initially conceived them. Any Stills fan will be thrilled to experience this collection. It's music the way it was for so many of us back then; intimate, touchable, nourishing.

9. A Dream Come True For This Fan - It doesn’t get any better than Stephen Stills and an acoustic guitar and this CD is a gem for the die-hard fan. Stills’ vocals were great and his future as one of rock’s bona fide guitar virtuosos is evident with every cut. “Wooden Ships” in particular is a stand out as it is broken down to its bare bones and gives a refreshing take on an old favorite. For those that have not seen Stills' live solo acoustic sets over the years this CD is a must have. "Just Roll Tape” illustrates what Stills’ fans know. Stills and his Martin are one great combination. This CD was not released as part of a Stills/Young competition. The “tape” in this instance was rescued from a dumpster and delivered to its rightful owner (thanks to Graham Nash) just recently. This fan is glad it was discovered and even more thankful that Stephen Stills has made it available to us. Thanks, Stephen!

10. What a gem!!! - While driving home yesterday, I heard Treetop Flyer. I thought it was new!! When I saw this album here, I was thrilled. This is the first full album I've purchased too. I'm completely loving it!!! CSN (and sometimes Y) have long been my all-time favorites. But, as soloists, I've always been torn between S & Y. S has just made first favorite status. Sorry Neil.

11. Tree Top Flyer - Waited for this song to be available for the last ... to many years. Tonight I now have it and it was worth the wait. One the very best classic tunes from a young Steven Stills. Now all that is needed is the video to watch this song as I listen to it every weekend. Still looking for the first cut of this same song.
2007-07-14
12. Wonderful - This is a great album and very timely. These songs sound vibrant and new. There should be radio play on some of the acoustic shows of these songs; especially Know You've Got To Run and could there be a stronger song than a solo Suite? Lets hope some more tapes turn up! Great addition to your collection

13. This is music at its core! - How refreshing to go back to a great artist when he was young, and did not care about anything other than the music...no emcumberances, no worries, just the desire to write the songs as he felt them grow from his heart! In a day where music seems desperately trying to reinvent itself, sometimes hitting the mark, and mostly missing, it is refreshing to look back at what may have been the beginning of the golden era of rock music,; thru , an era when music was not as enthroned to the money machine and mass commercialism, a time when a song moved people, and often helped people as they were growing up during the period when America was first beginning to feel the growing pains of the time we currently find ourselves in...a time where predictions of "the greenhouse effect" have been recognized as a very real period of "global warming..." A time to where for the first time in our history, police, and then soldiers fired shots at American students and citizen's exercising their right to freedom of speech and assembly. Maybe it is time where we begin to get "back to the garden," and make some hard decisions to make the kind of choices we sang about back in the day when Stephen Still's penned these songs!
2007-07-13
14. Must Have for Stills fans - Stills voice and Stills' guitar and nothing else to clutter up the view! Wow! A treasure from that time, after Buffalo Springfield, before CSN... if you are a Stills fan or a CSN fan, you won't regret this purchase. In places it is obvious that it is not "polished" but, hey, he said "Just roll tape" and I can't think of a better way to hear it. I love it.

15. "Stephen Will See You Now!" - .."Sometimes It Hurts So Badly; I Must Cry Out Loud!"..{Could this be the start of the S.S.A. or "The Stephen Stills Archives?"} His former bandmate Neil Young has unearthed his own (great!) long-lost live sets; So could this now be Still's turn? Going by the date stamped on the box; (April , ); They coincide with Crosby, Stiils & Nash's (incredible!) debut album; Although some of these songs would show up much later on Stills' solo LP's and with his own (formidable!) outfit; Mananassas! For "Just Roll Tape" finds Stephen once again being the "Magnificent Master" of the big old Martin Acoustic Guitar! His Voice, Pacing, Melody & Lyrics are all so together; And Stills gets to showcase his Country/Flamenco/Bluesy licks so well! My Picks: Treetop Flyer; Black Queen; Change Partners & Of course; Suite: Judy Blue Eyes! "So Begins The Task" for Stephen Stills-"Long May You Run!"...by Grimmbo.

1. Master Songwriter - Folks, year old artists are supposed to write songs of reflection. That is the entire point. This is as good as anything he has every done and is darn sure better writing than what passes for country these days. When I think of utter garbage like Honky Tonk Badonkadonk being a hit while this album goes unnoticed, it is a sad world we live in.
2017-05-08
2. He is a legend - This album is a gem from a man who is unsurpassed in his field. His raw emotion and honesty in both writing and performance are what makes him unique in the industry caught up in "branding". I saw him in Chattanooga a few months ago and his performance which consisted on him and a guitar was stellar. Here's hoping this isn't the last we hear from him.
2013-03-25
3. feeling mortal - So many of the the great country legends have passed on and several did amazing records late in their careers - Johnny Cash did some of his best work late in life as did Porter Waggoner and, the still kicking, Loretta Lynn - This record rates right up there and the honest sparse production lends itself to highlight the brilliance of the work - KK has given us a gem and we can only hope there's more to come - I could hear George Jones doing "Just Suppose" and I hope sometime soon we get a record like this from the Possum.

4. The Truth - It must be an incredible feeling to say in a word or two what it takes a mortal a paragraph or two to convey. Kris maybe feeling mortal, but he sure doesn't write like one. I hold that the poets of our modern age
Are playing tonight on some corner stage.
from an unlikely lectern of bronze string and spruce,
They're spinning a tale and telling the truth. - JBB@

5. Great Stuff from a Legend - People... Give Kris a break. The guy is years old, and has seen more miles than most of us. He is still writing good songs, better than the Nashville crap they call country these days. Of course he won't sound or write like he did years ago. But that doesn't mean it isn't good writing. Listen with an open mind, and enjoy a legend who isn't willing to pack it in.
2013-01-30
6. Lost and a bore - Evolution, cognition and fiction are hallmarks of an authentic soul, artist, human or otherwise. The " Poor Me " complex that has become an epidemic in aging country singers latest creations merely reminds the world of James Jones's quote - " We all tell our stories and talk about our lives, it reminds our hearts everything born dies ". As does creativity in the case of this sad, mediocre attempt at bypassing what was once a great mind of exploration in poetry, imagery, verse and artistry. Say good night Kris.

7. It is what it is - As someone who has listened to Kris for almost years now I like this a lot. I know a lot of people will complain that it's not as good as stuff from the 's and scream he's lost it but what exactly is a year old singer songwriter supose to write about today? Kris is one of the greatest songwriters that has ever lived and this record and these songs represent his life today and the forthcoming final chapter and if you just sit down and listen to the words in these songs you might enjoy them.

8. "Each Day I'm Drawin' Closer To The Brink!" - .."And I Thank My Lucky Stars!".."Feeling Mortal" as any year old would with many wives & children; Kris Kristofferson never ceases to amaze & impress us!-We first caught "The Brownsville Boy" on the "Boarder Lord" Tour at the gone-but-not forgotten "Lennie's On The Turnpike"; Then times more in the 's; At The Orpheum & The Zeiterion; Just bare-boned: Guitar; Harmonica & Song-Book!-Yes; This does have the sparse; unvarnished feel of the late; great Johnny Cash's "American Recordings"; Great as they were; They were all Covers; Kris's are all his own!-Why; "Ramblin' Jack" could go up against "Darby's Castle" on"Kristofferson"!-The Ten Tunes here are truly "Bread For The Body!"…by Grimmbo.

1. Roots music sample with a mythos - This is probably the folk-roots album that I’ve enjoyed the most. The narrative is unique and shows Mitchell’s great talent for storytelling. The cohesiveness of the whole production, voice castings, rhythm and style selection for each part are examples of a extremely well done production. The album is exquisite.

1. Great team! - No other fine voice in modern music. Enjoy Ann as well hadn't heard of her before this. I love the musical arrangement with more of a less band sound then her previous stuff and much more acoustic. Cajun style music /folk music and the voices balance the whole thing out, the crying fiddle and he duet vocals of the title track really stuck with me, I played it again before moving on first time i listened. LOVE the cover of 'Walk Away Rene' too. This would be Linda's last album before Parkinsins sileneced hre voice forever. Enjoy, long lives her muisc.

1. Thank you Jet - I Shazamed this song during a commercial for Jet bc as soon as I heard it, I was like “whoa who’s this?” It really reminds me of a time during the late s early s. It has that vintage feel and sound to it. I really like it. Other songs by them are great too and also have that vintage feeling.

2. A gem! - I usually pick my favorite songs for download but love every one on this EP so I instantly bought the whole thing. Hailslide is reminiscing of an old soul classic - so good. Also love the strings. My favorite discovery so far this year (and it’s July). I hope a full-length album will follow. Scandinavia sure has been blessing us with great artists over the past few years.

1. Happy to Hear - I’m so happy to hear these songs! After coming across something live from NYC ? during the pandemic, I can only think that she had a limited crew and conditions were not good. Her pitch was off, sustained notes were weak. She is,after all, . On this album she has her sound again. Maybe she pitched some a bit lower. No harm in that! And it is lovely! Thank you, Judith.

2. Late to the party - I had only heard Judy’s rendition of the eternal Sondheim classic, “Send in the Clowns.” I fell in love with her all too short album, “A Love Letter to Stephen Sondheim.” This album, “Spellbound” is beautiful. Favorite tracks are the title track along with Grand Canyon, Shipwrecked Mariner, City of Awakening. Judy definitely needs to be heard by more people.. now to track down her earlier albums.

3. Actually really good! - When I first saw that Paris Jackson was in a “hippie” band, I’ll be honest— I rolled my eyes and laughed that it was a clearly a phase that only a person of her privilege and family name can go through. After listening to the EP on Spotify (and now I purchased it!) , I would like to apologize and admit I was wrong! While I do believe that they wouldn’t have the same opportunity to “make it” without her family name and financial privilege, there is clearly talent here, (especially in Gabriel— love his voice!) and I love that they are using their platform to make the world a better place with monetary contributions from their net earnings. Their lyrics are catchy and clever and I especially love the melodies that will definitely be stuck in my head like an itch I can’t scratch until I play the song again. The song that convinced me to just go ahead and purchase the EP was “Geronimo”. So good! I appreciate that they are donating their net earnings to important organizations to make our country a better place for black Americans.

1. Stumbled upon a gem - Calming, deep and true to the Chronicles of Narnia. I love Eustace Scrubb’s redemption story in song and Puddleglum’s Anthem is another favorite.
But that’s just with a quick listen. I’m sure I’ll discover more with each listening.
Sarah Sparks weaves the stories of Narnia with allusion to scripture resulting in a poetic iceberg where a few words represent a deep well. Glad I stumbled upon this album and am excited to check out Sarah’s other music.

1. A New Holiday Favorite - I couldn't DISAGREE more with the first reviewer. In a season filled with music that has become almost trite and tiresome from decades of repeated play and listening, this album is a genuine breath of fresh air. It is a beyond worthy addition to her now trio of Holiday albums. Her voice, as always, is the very definition of sweet and evocative, while her musical arrangements are an true absolute delight. Kudos once again, Kate!

2. Another great Christmas album - I don’t know what the previous reviewers problem is… but this is another great Christmas album by Kate. She tends to play around with many traditional holiday hymns this time around… and I find the approach quite refreshing. This Christmas album by Kate might require a little more patience than her past seasonal albums… but like most good music, your reward is gained through repeated listenings. Thanks Kate! When are you going to tour the U.S. again?!? Please come back!!!
2015-12-16
3. Mediocre - While I have enjoyed Kate Rusby's music for years, this CD doesn't work for me. There are about songs that make the CD barely worth listening to, while the rest have odd arrangements and are tedious and irritating. Sorry but this music will not make it to my must play list for the holidays.

1. Don’t miss this!!! - I bought this as a preorder, and every month Faun releases a single song which I’d play on repeat all day long for weeks on end. Its like a monthly dose, and I don’t know what I’ll do when its finally completely released and we’ll have to wait a whole year or longer for more from them.
Every song so far has been sensational. The music is out of this world, and Oliver’s soft voice is simply beautiful. Well done Faun. I’ve been following their albums for nearly a decade and they somehow keep improving even when you think there is no room for improvement. Thank you Faun, for your dedication to your art. It shows in the quality of your work.

1. Incredible - The female lead vocalists have completely different tones and when harmonizing together, the sound is something that I can only imagine angels to sound like. Many different instruments are used, resulting in such a big sound. Great lyrics, great vocals, great EVERYTHING. Very talented band.

1. Powerful new voice - I don't actually listen to a lot of contemporary folk - my taste runs more to Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. But wow, Lizzie No is a force! The themes are mostly what you'd expect from a young singer/songwriter: relationships and music itself, but the depth she treats these with show the wisdom and sensitivity of one who has thought and seen and felt a lot. And then there's "The Killing Season". What can I say? It gives me chills everytime I hear it. For those who know Billie Holliday, I'll just say this is "Strange Fruit" for our troubled time.

2. Hard Won - This group of songs has the very sweet sounds of music and lyrics by a fresh young voice with an old soul. My mind goes to my younger days with other singers and songwriters... Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Mary Travers, Nanci Griffith, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Maria Malduar and Kate and Anna McGarrigle. Lizzie No is in touch somehow. Hard Won is an album of a perfect start.

1. How can I keep from listening! - This album is a beautifully crafted collection of songs directly from Sarah's heart. They touch the listener in the inner realms of loneliness, despair, grief, loss, but also joy, hope and the spirit's yearning for deep unconditional love. The production quality is top notch and I've had a number of these songs stuck in my head all day, carrying me through my day. This isn't just a collection of music, it's a private retreat for the weary soul.

2. I love it! - Sarah Hart is a beautiful, blessed woman, and her voice is beautifully uplifting paired with her dedicated lyrics. I heard her live with Steve Angrisano; I'll always remember their performance! Sarah, your songs are relatable and remind me to keep faith. Keep singing with that lovely voice!

3. Sarah's best! - I have been a fan of Sarah Hart since I first heard her "Obvious" cd. I love her voice, and I love her songs, but this new cd "Above Earth's Lamentation" is my absolute favorite. Sarah's soothing vocal is as gorgeous as ever, and the songs are meaningful, inspiring, and full of insight. Purchase this album! You won't be disappointed!

1. Folkways - The fact that Charlie Parr's newest album has been recorded on Smithsoian Folkways speaks to the importance, depth and masterful musicianship that he has displayed thru his body of work in his career. The liner notes dub him a National Treasure, and that is NOT an overstatement. Parr's empathy, observations, humor and focus on our common dilemma's, both large and small - along with his remarkable guitar style and picking - make him worthy and any and all accolades.

1. Exceptional harmony - real music - Lula Wiles is mastering new facets of harmony with each song. Remember - these ladies not only sing these amazing songs, but they also play the instruments, write the music, and harmonize flawlessly. The album consist of songs written in the non-traditional style that more than amazes the listener. In today's world, sings often succeed when the traditional song structure of stanzas, bridges, and choruses are used in typical patterns. Lula pushes the preferences of popular culture aside (in more ways than one!) to create wonderful, honest music with a folk-feel. Of course - as it is impossible to avoid - some typical song patterns still emerge. But the listener still will be surprised with the content in each song. For instance: a note may be added in one stanza where it was not in the prior stanza. Or perhaps a word repeated in one chorus that is not repeated in another. Or the purposeful drop of a vocal or instrumental note, which provides emphasis to a line you can assume the band wanted you to take to heart. In summary- excellent harmonizing and impressive instrumental. And a job well on writing as well. Only criticism would be that the album lacks diversity. For example: The gloominess of someone going home because the singer has gotten herself into a mess ("mama") is not my personal taste. A song about someone going home for personal fulfillment or love or concern would also sound lovely coming from these ladies. And I would like to see some more meaningful songs down the line (songs more like the song "don't ask why"!). Maybe some more songs consisting of material based on special memories - or causes the ladies strongly feel about- would be a nice addition. I feel the ladies have lovely voices - too good to waste. So although I do like some of the strong, raw , material they sing - I also believe some "lighter" (hate that word) songs would make them heavenly! But maybe they will soon. I have no doubt they will write more and more songs as time goes on!!! I say Keep it coming!!!

1. Talented musician, memorable album - Love this album! Nate's lyrics are relatable, thought provoking and touching and Hourglass' melodies are well-shaped and easy to listen to. He's got a gritty and pretty tone that is so appealing. His vocals are raw and organic, truly a natural talent. I cant wait to hear more from this artist. Until then I'll have to settle for his YouTube channel and keeping this album on repeat!

2. Can't stop listening! - Nate's an unassuming, friendly, generous guy with AMAZING talent--from his fresh lyrics to his guitar and keyboard magic to his amazing VOICE--the songs are mesmerizing and easy to listen to! "Hourglass" has musical layers and depth--both in what Nate's saying and how he presents it.

3. Raw Talent - Nate has always been an extremely talented artist, he's so versatile and can sing all genres. He puts artists like Keith Urban and Rascal Flats to shame at their own game, but you would never know it. He's a man with great integrity and character, a man whose humble and genuine but don't mistake his cleverness because he can pull off some hilarious practical jokes that you don't see coming!! Proud of you Nate, your work it amazing.

4. A Great Artist and a Even Better Person - I have seen Nate Botsford play live numerous times and his vocals and talent may only be surpassed by his generosity. I was diagnosed with terminal Brain Cancer and he was kind and humble enough to play at a charity event that my friends set up for me to help raise money to pay for my terribly high medical expenses. I am so glad his album finally came out so the entire world can final see and recognize his gift for creating and singing amazing songs that hit the mark!! Please buy his album and help spread the word about this talented musician. - DH (Hughes Troops)
