1. Had to Watch it Twice To Get It - Remake of Once Upon a Time in the West with elements of Django, Shane, and : to Yuma. First time through I got too caught up in the shoot out emotions. Second time I watched it, I saw all the cleverly laid elements and how they played out. Classic Western with the touch of a feminine protagonist makes for a sensual spaghetti Western!

2. Man.........how could I have gone on without reviewing this movie? - This is a very underrated Western that I think kind of needs some recognition. The cast is stellar, consisting of Sharon Stone [she was great being tough as nails], Russell Crowe [who works perfectly in the Western genre], Gene Hackman [who's no stranger to Westerns], Leonardo DiCaprio [in one of his early roles], and Lance FREAKING Henrickson [sorry, I'm a fan]. The action for this film is great. The cinematography is also great....but then again what else should I expect from the director of the Evil Dead trilogy and the Spider-Man films? The story is also great.........I'm surprised that this film didn't get the recognition that it deserved when this movie came out. Overall, if you haven't seen this film.......check it out....you'll thank me later.

3. A Fairly Average Film with Memorable Performances - What is the point of The Quick and the Dead? Really, there isn't, just to entertain and to give a couple hours of fun. But, where this film succeeds and other popcorn type movies don't is the dynamic characters and acting. Gene Hackman is great in this kind of villian role and Sharon Stone gives a commendable effort. It is wonderful to see the two young faces of Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio. Russell is quite good in his role and Leonardo, although filling a somewhat small role, probably gives the most memorable performance out of the entire cast. Watch it for the acting!

4. A good western - I own this movie. Isn't the greatest as far as westerns go, but it is good. Gene Hackman and Sharon Stone are wonderful. Not just them but a bunch of talented actors really bring this script to life. It will keep your heart racing and bring you action, romance, vengence and justice. A good movie.

5. Really??? - This movie inspired me to write my first review! I have to disagree with the glowing reviews which my rental of this waste of three dollars stemmed from. I'd hoped that the caliber of actors would guarantee at least a decent film but this was not so. Sharons character (the main character i think, though it's hard to tell since you never really care about any of them the entire film) seemed like an emo version of clint eastwood. I wouldn't suggest that any fan of westerns should watch this. It bore more resemblance to yu-gi-oh than a real western. I'd like my money and two hours back. No offense meant, just dont understand how this is in the top western rentals.

1. Fantastic. I don’t understand the negative reviews - Although “based on actual historical events ” it is nonetheless historical fiction. There were a few continuity errors (the horses were not in winter coat, for example) but the costumes and, most importantly for me, the armament, were period-correct. Those who did not like the movie probably have little knowledge or interest in The American Fur Trade Era, and were put off by the storyline. But as an avid history buff with some knowledge of weapons of the period, I enjoyed it immensely. The acting was absolutely fantastic, and I loved every minute of this movie.

2. Amazing story of survival - Just filming this movie would have been brutal.
Rated R lots of blood, some language, rape scene, etc ... just plan brutal. The circumstances were warfare and survival.
But some how a really good movie! Kept my attention the whole way.
Didn’t feel like a revenge movie per say. Never give up keep fighting for the next breath.

3. To much detail - I think this movie was good, considering the fact it was so gory and had so much blood, probably had a little to much detail in the bear scene, but I will compliment on the fact that they made it seem so real so round of applause to that. But ya probably had a little to much detail so, if you not the kind of person who likes really gory movies, this is not the type of movie to watch then

4. A Lot Of Work And Knowhow Went Into This - I know little about Yellowstone but I've been there in winter and I kept asking myself: how do you swim and float on a log in snow and icewater for a half hour? Why are people's hands always bare? How does a tiny fire keep you warm? How does a musket turn into a semi-automatic? I liked the snow hut. Anyway, it took me a couple of days to watch because it dragged. Leo is a great actor-I guess he ate buffalo liver and whatever sineau to make the film seem real, and to get an Oscar.

5. Great acting - This movie is one of a kind for its great acting and cinematography. The only down side is the amount of land scape shots that make the movie longer than it needs to be. On the other hand a good side about this movie is how they turn a boring story that is in a history text book and turn it into an action pact western.

6. Amazing filmmaking, hard to watch - This film is beautiful, powerful and tells its story in an incredibly effective manner, but I never want to see it again. It was too much for me. I was literally bawling for parts of it, and horrified for most of the film. Kudos for the talent involved but holy s%t.

7. Amazing! - Where to begin?!
This movie is amazing!
I've heard people complain about the lack of dialogue; however, that makes this movie that much better IMO!
The places where the movie is filmed are stunning! There are no strained or "phony" relationships here; each actor really played their parts well!
You become immersed in this sweeping epic of revenge! This has become one of my all-time favorite movies!
The soundtracks, the landscapes, the tale of survival and revenge, the unorthodox style of filming really are incredible! Amazing!

1. You get what you want - I’ve seen reviews very negative, always comparing the old movie to this one. Guys, this is not how I see the great art of movie: it makes you travel and takes your spirit somewhere else.
I do not want to compare the « versions ». I loved both of them, different but still very good in many points.
So, don’t cry on the forgotten past, just enjoy the time you have. And, as usual, Denzel Washington proves He is the best actor on the surface of this planet. Thx, Mr Washington.

2. A descent but intentional remake done sideways - I went to go see The Magficient Seven remake with a lot of thoughts on my mind can i like this newly rendered western brought back because you know what Western movies are dead. This remake dosen't count it's descent and very loud and Denzel Washington delivers!
2020-06-16
3. HONESTLY... - Many say this movie disappoints in reaching the heights of the original. Yes, the original is a classic that will never be forgotten. But this one, is something else.
Whereas the original provided a complex moral tale, this film simplifies the story to a classic Good vs. Evil standoff. But what this film truly brings is who the characters are. Are they flashy? Are they heroic? Are they the bona fide superheroes? No. They are flawed, drifting stray dogs; they are the outcasts of their kind. The poetry in the last guys you'd expect saving a town, suddenly laying down their lives for a selfless cause, is cause enough for this movie to succeed. It is a story of hope, justice, and brotherhood. There are moments that cause disbelief, but the original did too, believe me. No film is perfect. But the heart of the story is essential, and the heart of this one inspires selflessness. The cast is great, the pacing is great, the villain is slimy, the action is entertaining, and the story is poetic. This is a western that does what westerns did best; serve as well done parables. Well done indeed.

4. Note even worth cent rental - One of the worst movies I have ever watched. Couldn't hold a candle to the original. Even though I didn't expect it to match the original M it was just down right poor. Terrible acting, terrible script, everyone getting shot with guns and arrows times and still not dying. Denzel, how could you be involved with such a poor movie ???
2017-06-19
5. Magnificent Seven ' - A Disjointed catastrophe of a movie that reeks of cliche westerns where the director did a disservice to talented actors. A director who had limited knowledge of the western frontier invoking his fantasy view of the 's rather than seeking a realistic portrayal of a great fictional story. I want my hours back. Where can I can my hours back. Denzel's Washington's overzealous performance was most disappointing.

6. Movie might be good! - I'm rating the iTunes Store. I rented the movie but couldn't watch it because it was going to take hours, then hours, finally hours to download even at p. Others I've watched nearly immediately on the same router and network. At this rate I may not live long enough to watch it.
2017-05-28
7. I enjoyed it! - Not comparing this movie to anything else and going in with no expectations what so ever; I enjoyed the movie. To me the violence was realistic (as one can imagine the untamed west to be) but not so over the top you are covering your eyes. There is light humor, although I will say a time or two it was poorly placed. But seriously, if you just want a Western for simple entertainment this is a classic story.
2017-02-05
8. Excellent - So to all those that have given this movie bad reviews are morons! This movie was excellent. I love westerns and I really wasn't too sure about this one. I was highly impressed. It's a must see. Decide for yourself. But this is far from boring and far from having any bad acting. Someone mentioned the rating in their review. They were a bit extreme about it but it is borderline rated R with violence.

1. Simplistic and predictable - Character development is weak and contrived Acting is sub par with a couple of decent monologues. All characters, with the exception of Cage’s nemesis are wildly inconsistent. Even supporting actors were inconsistent from a weak stupid sidekick in one scene to a “if you see him, put a bullet in him” tough guys in the next. The main characters were supposed to be emotionless however varied throughout the movie based on the scenes from cold hearted emotionless to emotional wrecks. The only interesting part was the end with the twist on the money for the Marshall and the daughter of Cage. But even that was a borrowed trope. Watch Shane instead. Glad it was just a rental.
2023-02-25
2. Washed Up Nick! - Nick Cage, Bruce Willis, Steven Seagal… these guys can’t make a good movie these days if their paychecks depended on it. Their characters only change clothes for each new movie, same old bad acting and plots. And I would expect to pay . to purchase a blockbuster movie, but this regurgitated Hollywood script wants .?? Have they lost their minds. Save your money and buy $. movies, you will probably get at least movies better than this one. If you want a western featuring an old guy and a young girl, buy News of the World with Tom Hanks, an actor that knows how to make a movie.
2023-01-20
3. Not that Good - Ever since Old Henry came out, it seems like there has been an attempt to make another good Western. This failed. The story takes a bit from Unforgiven, and the changes made do not make it any better. The daughter was perhaps the best part of the movie, but even that was ruined by a ridiculous subplot hinting at genetic sociopathy. This whole subplot that was added to didn’t provide any depth for Cage’s character, and just made the little girl kind of creepy in the end. It might have been a better movie had they just followed all the old tropes and just ripped off the best parts of these other Westerns.

1. The Quintessential American Western - The characters and pacing of this movie are excellent. This is one of my all-time favorite westerns. Val Kilmer, as Doc Holiday, is brilliant. Strong villains, also make this a compelling story. You will not be disappointed with this movie if you are a fan of western movies… Definitely a crowdpleaser.
2022-11-19
2. A charismatic & unforgettable Western - This movie is an instant classic! Took me a long time to actually watch it after being really into Westerns. This movie features a terrific cast, memorable lines, a good plot and great sets. The real charmer of this movie was definitely Val Kilmer for me. He really stole every scene he was in as the famous Doc Holliday along side Kurt Russell’s featured figure, Wyatt Earp. I would not have purchased this movie digitally or physically on Blu-ray if I didn’t love it.
2021-10-08
3. Historically Accurate & Amazing Performances, Amazing Film - First off, many of the characters that the main personalities of the movie introduce you to are indeed historically real & accurate accounts. Ed Bailey, Milt Joyce (whom Doc Holliday had quarreled with & ended up stabbing Mr. Joyce & was later tried for “Attempted Murder”), needless to say did not get along. Other characters such as John Behan had tried to gain Wyatt Earps friendship and/or approval was spurned by Earp thus making him an enemy & caused him to align with the “Cowboys”. Villains such as Curly Bill Brocius indeed had the true “Shotgun Duel”, with Wyatt Earp. Henry Hooker, the local area rancher & cattleman did indeed offer sanctuary to Doc Holliday when his condition had worsened. The only unsubstantiated claim is the shootout between Johnny Ringo & Doc Holliday. However when found, Ringo had his Colt drawn, shot fired & lay dead at the base of a large tree with a single shot to the head. The speculation was then & now that Doc Holliday was in fact the only man that possessed the speed to which could in fact beat Ringo in a straight up “Gunfight”. However evidence shows that Holliday had been in court around the time the supposed gunfight had taken place. To add further questions, there was a considerable amount of time afterwards that no one could account for the whereabouts of Doc. So yes, it was maybe a liberty or indulgence on the directors part, but what a wonderful indulgence to add to the film. It is so well done, including the often strange & unconventional love affair between Earp & Josephine Marcus from Doc & “Big Nose Kate”, the prostitute, it truly tells the often complicated life of the men & women that were more than characters in the famous shootout at the O.K. Corral. If you enjoy the western genre at all you owe it to yourself to watch Tombstone at least once & learn about real men of action & the lengths they’d go to, to uphold the law. A little known fact about the movie Tombstone was that Val Kilmer’s performance of John Henry “Doc” Holliday was so well received the studio toyed with the idea of making a movie that told the story of the early years of Doc Holliday, to be named simply “Doc”, but ultimately was never done. Also a bit of trivia; as Doc Holliday liked to state that “He’d be your Huckleberry”, several times throughout the film. In those days the handle or “Huckle”, as it was known & men that were selected to carry the coffin of the deceased were known as “Bearers”. So it would be shortened to “Huckleberry”, meaning “he’d be all to happy to put you in your coffin, ahead of schedule”, if need be! Enjoy!

4. Deceptively Great! - Why deceptively great? Because as wonderful as Val Kilmer is, he is allowed to shine by one of the best casts in movie history! Russel’s deadpan delivery (very much like how Earp was seen by those who knew him), allows for scene stealing from many of the cast. Elliot, Paxton, Booth, Biehn, Heston, Lang, Priestly, and Zane each are absolutely great in their performances! Along with Robert Mitchum’s voice over, and Charlton Heston’s presence, this film achieves a pedigree not achieved by most westerns from the s, s, and beyond. Though not % historically accurate, this film is more accurate than it’s ‘Wyatt Earp’ predecessors! By far! Even the death of Ringo is one of the possibilities that some historians hold too, rather than him just committing suicide. PS- Russell should have gotten best director for his work, since for all intents and purposes he secretly directed this truly great film!

5. New favorite movie! - Hands down best movie ever! It’s definitely a must see and it has a amazing music score to go with it! Maybe one day the soundtrack will be available on iTunes as well....? Either way, if you haven’t seen it, I’d suggest you see it at least once! I saw it twice in hours... Why are you still reading this? Go watch!

6. Hollywood nonsense - fairly entertaining - Russell turns in the very best Wyatt Earp ever seen, before or since. Kilmer and Biehn are great and Elliot does a good job playing himself. As for the story, it touches on the truth now and then but a lot of it is nonsense (In truth, Earp had actually conducted business with Ike Clanton, a local rancher. Clanton wasn't just some vagabond. And Holliday was not "back in town," as he'd never before been there.). The movie is a string of cliches, far too "Hollywood" throughout, and often silly - such as the good guys celebrating a victory by shaking hands at a full gallop, or when things magically turns into a prolonged class reunion, or when the hero trots out such silly lines as jerking a "smoke wagon" and getting to work. The whole thing is held together by the riveting performance of Kurt Russell, with Michael Biehn's Johnny Ringo being just as impressive. One can't help but to compare this movie to the film Wyatt Earp. For my money, they should have replaced Costner with Russell and tossed Tombstone into the trash. Tombstone is decent entertainment, but it is Hollywood.
2019-08-18
7. Still the best!!! - You can't claim to be a movie buff without having seen Tombstone. I've loved this movie from the first time I saw it. The casting is perhaps the best I've ever seen. It's amazing how each actor truly transform into their character, as if each actor were handpicked by the real life person each portrays. They make this movie bigger than the screen! Also, I would bet that this movie contains more memorable "one-liners" than any other in its genre.
2018-05-10
8. Best Western of My Generation - I grew up watching John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. I love Rio Bravo and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Those westerns are classics but they belong to my father and his fellow Baby-boomers. This is my western! Hands down Val Kilmer's best and most memorable performance. I can watch this movie over and over again.

1. Hailrious and very well intended - Blazing Saddles looks fake as anything but this movie is so funny that's it's a warner bros mistake. Sure Blazing Saddles is racist and very offenisve but it bascially works like this. I love all the jokes and well written characters that are intersesting to look it. I enjoyed this spoof movie in the end you think that this movie is builttproof and very well-written.

2. Politic Correct is BS ! - If you are tired of political correctness, ie you have a sense of humor, then this is the movie for you. It was made for men and women with guts. It pokes holes in the sacred cows of liberalism. How much better would it have been if they left in the “real zingers” that they allegedly took out? If you can’t laugh at it this movie then you are a meow meow.
2018-12-05
3. What about Young Frankenstein?! - Blazing Saddles is a great movie and all, but what about Young Frankenstein? Doesn’t it deserve to be on iTunes and have a full-length motion picture soundtrack? ESPECIALLY, when it’s years since its initial release? What? Is Mel Brooks or th Century Fox waiting another years for its th anniversary? And, even more, are they gonna give John Morris his proper due for composing the soundtrack? Come on!!! I’m not only one thinking about this, right?
2017-10-25
4. Blazing Great! - Priceless. That’s all I got to say. We open with a nice Western ballad, followed by the craziest Western film ever made. Basically, Attorney General Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman) wants to destroy a small town named Rock Ridge. To get the town out of his way, he decides to appoint a black sheriff to said town because people would chase him out (it was ) because they’d be offended by him. So he sends Bart (Cleavon Little) a railroad worker he decided not to have hung in order to achieve this. Bart’s rejected by the town as Lemarr and Governor Le Petomane (Mel Brooks) predicted, but after Bart meets the “Waco Kid,” (Gene Wilder) they work together to get the townsfolk (aka, the Johnson family) to save the town in one of the most wild, wildly hilarious, high flying ist, rootin-tootin Westerns ever made, thanks to Mel Brooks’ sense of humor, turning the genre on its head like he would with sci-fi in Spaceballs years later, and of course, breaking the fourth wall, a part of which brings up my only problem I can’t discuss without spoilers. Bart and “Waco Kid” prove to be a dynamic duo who clearly don’t take anything seriously in this unserious world they create. Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder make for hilarious comedy that doesn’t even have to play the race card (much). They do their bits and become best friends in a semi-believable manner in this fast paced comedy that doesn’t need to be perfectly coherent. The soundtrack also sets the hilarious mood with John Morris’ zippy tunes that stay true to the Western genre. The humor was highly controversial in theory, but hilarious in practice. Don’t try these words at home or out in the streets, or anywhere except if you’re watching this movie and are saying it in anticipation of hearing the line. If you take out the offensive stuff, you won’t have a movie, this stuff is comedy gold. It’s meant to be offensive, it’s to make fun of how brutal the Wild West really was, and how it was glorified in Westerns of old. So heads up: there are a lot of slurs and a few swears here and there, so you probably didn’t come across this channel surfing, or if you did, then the point was lost. Anyway, Blazing Saddles, hilarious comedy, check it out, now if you’ll excuse me, I got a review to read within this review.

5. one of the worst comedies of all time - i watch this movie and was realy excited to see it because i heard it's one of the best. i was not impresse d. the best movie of all time is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Blazing saddles sucked, it wasnt even that funny. i laughed probeley twice. dont wast your money.

6. Masterpiece - One of the best movies I have ever had the pleasure of laughing at. Blazing Saddles could not be made today, with everyone so sensitive about things in the world today, a movie like this would have endured criticisim. But, I as an African American, can see the humor in it and can take it for what it is, comedy gold.

7. "What In The Wide Wide World Of Sports Is A-Goin - I love this movie. It has all the right jokes that make viewers fall out of their seats laughing their heads off every time they watch it. From scenes such as the "Camptown Ladies," "The Sheriff Is Near," "Excuse Me While I Whip This Out," "Candygram For Mongo," "Where's My Froggy?," "The French Mistake," and who could forget the farting cowboy scene. Bottom line, there will be something for everyone in this classic film.
2012-10-20
8. Blazing Saddles - I saw this several times in the theaters and drive-ins in . Then, it was one of the first three or four movies I bought on video tape when I got my first VCR (Betamax). Outrageously crude, rude and socially unacceptable yet, it's the funniest movie ever made. (Airplane is a close second in my view.) It's true it can be construed as quite racist and politically incorrect by today's standards (even by yesterday's standards--to a degree) but the biggest joke is that Bart is the smartest person in the film. The only thing iTunes could add to make this better is the 'th Anniversary Edition which has remastered video and an outstanding Dolby Digital . ("stereo") soundtrack (the original was only in mono)--it's dramatically better all around. But regardless, a great purchase.

1. I NEVER ever tire of this movie! - This film is definitely in my top ten! The highlight was Dean Martin singing a capella with Ricky Nelson My Rifle, My Pony and Me. So sweet! This is John Wayne at his best. Dean Martin proves how well he can act. Angie is quite likable. If you like Westerns at all, you’ll certainly love this one!

2. The classics never go out of style - An excellent movie involving several great personalities. If you're seeking the meaning of life while attempting to connect with your inner self, pick up a book by one of the Bronte sisters or read poetry. Moreover, if you're not a fan of the Duke, move on. However, if you want the type of western we've come to know and love from this consummate American icon, put down your satchel and draw up.
Somehow we've bought into the idea that unless a particular work causes deep soul-searching or leaves our psyche conflicted, it's of limited value. Not true. I consider myself something of a thinking man, and I think you'll enjoy this picture for any number of reasons. If you liked El Dorado, Liberty Valence, or The Undefeated, you'll like Rio Bravo.

3. Rio Bravo - A great film directed by the master Howard Hawks. Not only was Dean Martin a terrific singer, but a good actor. He shows his acting skills in this one. John Wayne is excellent as always; Walter Brennan is a gem. Might be wrong, but feel Ricky Nelson was cast in this film to attract the younger audience, however, does a decent job. Angie Dickinson is beautiful as a brunette. Lots of action in this shoot'em'up western. Enjoy it!

4. One the Dukes Best and Possibly One of the Greatest Westerns of All - This film is a true classic. John Wayne always played John Wayne but he always had the best roles under director John Ford and Howard Hawks. Rio Bravo deals with the classics of the western bravery, guts, as well as character drama. Not a simple film by any means this film has a Sheriff (Wayne) trying to hold things together against vicious criminals while he has a drunkard deputy (Martin) whom Wayne has to help come to his senses and get his respect back, a peg legged jailer, and a cocky but confident youngester named Colorado. This mixed in with a femme-fatale (Dickinson) who plays a stellar role as the not-so-innocent flare for John Wayne sheriff. Rio Bravo is a triumph and if you enjoy good Westerns you should defiently watch this film. Its one of the best of all times.

5. PCing Older Movies/Actors - In ancient times if you were really disliked after you were dead they would erase (Chop off, chip off, burn) any references, pertaining to Kings, and some others in very high places. I can't stand it when people have to play politics or the current PC Of The Times Game. Watch the movie and rate the movie on it's own right, or don't rate it all, but dump the politics.

6. rio bravo - this is one of our family all time favorites...i even had a crush on rick nelson at years old still love to listen to his and dean martins songs.
but my most favorite song was the" cut throat song" I love the way john wayne always had a young star in his movies...from his sons to young
and coming stars.............

7. If you are a Dean Martin fan, watch is movie. Otherwise don't waste your money. - As a disclaimer, I am a huge, massive Dean Martin fan. In my mind, Dean Martin was The Entertainer of the th Century, even beyond Frank Sinatra. Also, as a disclaimer, I have never been a John Wayne fan. His stuff was too "cookie-cutter," stereotypical and male dominated. So, I like this movie because Dean Martin was incredible. He plays a louse of an alcoholic who redeems himself only at the last threads of the movie. How many people as big as Dean Martin would take such a role? That is why I think Dean Martin was the greatest. According to Wiki-pedia, John Wayne made "Rio Bravo" in response to the movie "High Noon." "Actor John Wayne disliked the film because he felt it was an allegory for blacklisting, which he actively supported. In his Playboy interview from May , Wayne stated he considered High Noon "the most un-American thing I’ve ever seen in my whole life"[] and went on to say he would never regret having helped blacklist liberal screenwriter Carl Foreman from Hollywood." This movie is very cookie-cutter, typical of John Wayne movies. It is titled "Rio Bravo," which is the Mexican name of the Rio Grande. Believe me, there was not a single scene that included the Rio Grande or any river or dash of water. If it were not for Dean Martin and Pedro Gonzalez-Gonzalez, the movie would be a total dud not worthy of a single star. Even Angie Dickinson's character was so stereotypical, I found myself almost laughing at her scenes. I barely recognized her because she is a brunette, and I only know her as a blond. Her character was so rambling and pathetic and whining, I was almost embarrassed to watch. Of course, she throws herself to John Wayne. Ricky Nelson had a role here, but I didn't feel that he was much of an actor. His role was stereotypical as a gunslinger, and he barely had more than two moods in the whole movie. He looked barely more than years old, but was supposedly so type of experienced cowboy and gunslinger. I did not buy it. If you like Dean Martin, and want to see everything he did, watch this movie. Otherwise, do not waste your money.

8. Rio Bravo - One of the essential western movies. Even the oddly placed girl, ably played by Angie Dickinson, fits. A professional lawman, faced with a gang of killers motivated by money, and supported only by a green kid, and drunk, and a cripple, chooses to fight for justice. It's what he does. Courage is at the forefront, but is ably supported by friendship, love, weakness, and their antitheses. An alternative to High Noon, it is at least as powerful.
The haunting sound track, featuring a trumpet piece specially crafted for the movie, supposedly inspired Enrico Marricone (Good, Bad, Ugly, et al). The songs are very well done, between Ricky Nelson and Dean Martin, and the aforementioned trumpet piece.
It runs a bit longer than most westerns, mainly due to developing the characters and plot. It never lags or becomes boring. I am always satisfied at the conclusion, and wish for more of the same. Sadly, there a very, very, few in this class.

1. My Fav. John Wayne Movie of all time! - I am a John Wayne fan. My father would kill me if I didn't say that. This is my absolute favorite of his movies. Chism is great and who shot liberty valence is too...but his one is the best. Story is awesome. Wayne is tough but also has a spot in his heart for the girl. This is a must see for those who even think they like John Wayne.

2. Karen Carpenter to play Mattie Ross??? - I picked one star because I have not seen this movie and I am not a fan of John Wayne. I wanted to let you all know that my being a Huge Carpenters' fan that Karen Carpenter did read for the part of Mattie Ross. Wayne just loved her and her voice so much that he wanted her for that role. Well she did a screen test and lost out to Darby. What a shame, it would be interesting how True Grit would have turned out if she won the role. Again I am not knocking this movie by one star it is just I have not seen it yet. The Carpenters' TV specials I have seen, I think Carpenter had a natural talent for acting believe it or not. Just thought I would share this trivia with you True Grit fans out there. Take care…...

3. True Grit - All of the Duke's films are fantastic. Some reviewers say it is miscast or not filmed well, but they are judging the film by standards. In it took several years to film and edit. By tbe standards of , it was one of the best films made. It is on my "favorite" list , along with "Old Yeller" and " Call of the wild". My family loves all of John Waynes movies. We dont have to rent them , our library is full.

4. New one - I honestly was not that impressed w/ this movie. people say it's a great film, i kinda disagree. It's entertaining but if they had improved on a lot of things (acting, filmmaking, etc.) then I may have liked it more. but they didn't. the acting was horrible, especially from Glenn Campbell and Kim Darby who were both WAY miscast, there were times I found myself laughing at parts where they were trying to be serious, etc. for a western movie, the town of Fort Smith looks too modern. even the locations for where the movie's supposed to take place are wrong. Fort Smith is in Arkansas and the Indian Territory is Oklahoma today. if you lived around those areas or been through them, you can easily tell that's neither. now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against John Wayne but I don't see why people say he's the real Rooster Cogburn. he was just himself. The way jeff bridges portrayed Cogburn was much closer to what the author of the book had intended and thus I think HE'S the real Rooster. the new one had better acting, was much more well shot, and was more faithful to the book than the old one was, like the ending for example. The ending of the first one wasn't AT ALL like the book. I recommend the new one. or read the book

5. Not better then the remake - Seriously, all the corny acting and inaccurate historical depictions are a huge let down. At the time, this was a great movie. Now, it's looked at as we do much of old movies, with the notion they couldn't act and then we tend to forgive that. But nope, all of these reviews saying it's better then the new one forgot what acting is.

6. One of My Fav Movies of All Time! - I honestly did NOT want to see this movie at first. My dad was making me watch it and I was like "Ugh I DO NOT want to see some cowboy movie". So I watched it and I must say it is one of my favorite movies. Although the new True Grit is more true to the book, this version (like the new one) has an AMAZING Rooster Cogburn and Maddie Ross and the plot is easy to follow!
2011-02-08
7. True Grit - Original - This is an epic western and showcases the quintessential John Wayne. Before renting it over the weekend, I hadn't seen it from beginning to end in, well, probably years at least. I wanted to see it again before going to the theater to see the remake. I sure hope the new one is half as good as the old one.

8. One of the All-Time Greatest Films Ever Made - This is the only movie I have ever bought online. I wanted one that I could watch over and over again on my phone without getting tired of it, like on long flights, and this is the one. I will always be in love with Kim Darby, and of course the Duke is at his best, which is still unapproached by any other actor, in my judgment. This film is a most unusual and extraordinary achievement by all concerned.

1. Turns Into Gross Zombie Movie - First half of the movie is passable, if only a bit boring. Halfway through everyone starts vomiting on each other and it gets gross.
Also, watching this I concluded that the writer/director of this tripe is actually a hateful and bigoted person. Seriously disturbing movie, and not for the reasons it wants to be.

2. Eh... but the look is awesome. - This is one of those that I would call a “film.” Purely a Tarantino attempt to get the nod from the non drug addict Hollywood as an “artist.” Slow, very slow. It was shot on film and in amazing film stock, so the look is amazing, but you’ll have to be happy about that because once they get inside, they never leave the room. I don’t remember how long it was, it drug on, and on, and on. I think they got tired of it on the cutting floor and just released it before it was minutes long. If you take anything from this, don’t waste your money on this.

3. Highly entertaining - People seem to love this movie, I personally find it highly entertaining. The setting and characters are a new twist on the period... usually it’s highfalutin characters. These guys may have been ripped out of today, life probably wasn’t as different back then as we seem to think. Wondering who’s working with who and what’s going to happen is reminiscent of Reservoir Dogs, another Tarantino film. The dialogue is great, and there are many funny parts. It’s meant to be suspenseful, violent, absurd and entertaining. I found it to be all of the above, in good ways. Kurt Russel and Sam Jackson are highlights, and I thought Walton Goggins carried the last part of the film. Take it or leave it, but I loved it.

4. The Unbelievable Eight. - Started out as a interesting movie with good actors, good plot, great cinematography. As the movie progressed, it became more and more unbelievable and degenerated into just a gore movie. Loved the explosive bloody vomit scenes....not! As if this is the way any kind of poison really works. You’d be better off watching Texas Chainsaw Massacre. At least you know what your getting.
This over the top ending ruined an otherwise good movie. One other thing....Samuel Jackson as a black, post civil war bounty hunter! There must have been a lot of those.

5. Rip off of Reservoir Dogs!!! - This is basically the same movie as Reservoir Dogs plot without being done nearly as well. Tarantino’s talent inkwell has dried up since & Kill Bill . He needs to go back to non-linear stories. That’s his meal ticket & can turn nearly any script into an at least average experience. Maybe he needs Roger Avary for his last movie. Please give us nonlinear again. Only True Romance was done well & Tony Scott directed it.

6. Amazing movie - After viewing a few times, this has become one of my favorite movies. I was surprised by the negative reviews. The is a post civil war era movie, and you need to accept how different social climates were in the late ’s. The movie is mainly set in a single location, which is similar to stage plays to help you focus on the story and the characters. There is a lot of dialogue and character building, I didn’t feel that it was slow, but it’s not an action film. If you are easily bored, it’s not for you. I really enjoyed the story, it has a nice twist. The characters and Kurt Russell and Samuel L. Jackson were wonderful.
2019-01-05
7. Amazing - I don’t know what the big fuss is, this movie is amazing. I will admit, it’s got some pretty slow parts that really don’t need to be in their. But then again if you think about it, Tarantino tried to make this movie roadshow style. In which those kind of movies were REALLY long. Jennifer Jason Leigh in my opinion stole the movie. She was amazing and really funny at some parts. Overall good. If you can handle an almost hour movie, watch this, you won’t regret it.

8. Critic Claudia Puig Had It Right - Puig was correct: fits better as a play than as a movie. Terribly offensive stuff. Brain freezingly slow during the first half, then gory as hell but a mystery you want to solve during the last third. Hated the music except during the credits-that was a good pick. A lot like Resivoir Dogs, even some of the same actors.

1. What happened? - I cannot download because of low memory space, this I understand; but I cannot even watch this movie now. The iTunes Store doesn't even show that i bought it. i get, "there was a problem downloading this" even when selecting 'play.' Also we selected the combo, Josey Wales/Plae Rider - never got Pale Rider! All bought with iTunes or Apple Gift cards as with the music below. Please help with a refund in this case as this has also happened with or more songs and albums bought from the ITunes store; the store doesn't show that I have bought them, so if i offload them to make space, i will not get them back without buying them again?! No thank you

2. Eastwood at his best! - This is my favorite Clint Eastwood movie and that's a huge statement considering The Good, The Bad and The Ugly trilogy. The cast is superb, Chief Dan George provides humor to a tragic chain of events for Josey. Sandra Locke and Clint have a great on screen presence, you can feel the love. His Rag-Tag group features people we are familiar with and have come to know from past performances. I own it digitally and on DVD media, I highly recommend!

3. Without a Doubt - This is Clint's Best Film. He directed this one and was its star. Far better than Unforgiven, but so far ahead of its time the Academy ignored it. His acting is spot on. The lonely outlaw running from authority in order to restore his family who were caught up in the bloody crossfire of Missouri Kansas border wars during the civil war. I loved it before I moved from the South to Kansas City. But, love it even more today as the people here seem to still recall the divisions created from that bloody state line and period in American history. The writing and bits of humor will melt you into each Character. A truly exceptional and large cast throughout. Rent or purchase this film and you will understand my review.

4. The good, The bad and the ugly!!!! - First off let me say, I have seen most if not all the westerns ever made. No joke! So let's start with this, this movie is visually stunning in every way. There's a realness to this movie I liked. How ever it left a lot of points on the field, so to speak. I wish they would have done more too show josey ( Clint ) learn his craft of war and guns. And the part where his comrades are murdered was a little half hearted. Over all a good movie and worth a watch. Oh and the so called leading Lady is a joke!! Enjoy the the movie folks

5. Very enjoyable Western - While the Western genre has fallen out of favor amongst Americans, I assure you that this film would change a lot of minds if watched. This film is very enjoyable and remains true to the original great Westerns, despite being a little more modern. I highly recommend this film.

6. Fantastic Film - One of the finest films ever. I'm not a huge fan of the Western genre, but this movie is simply superb. The writing, acting, direction, production, etc., ect. It's just plain ol' solid in all aspects. And of course there's the classic one-liners that Clint's characters have been known for: "Aren't we gonna bury them guys, Josie"? asks the kid. "Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms" replies Josie. Classic Clint.

1. Kevin Costner’s ‘Open Range’ Movie - I loved this movie from the start! For me personally, it is an educational historical themed Movie of our Old Western era in America. I am especially touched by the relationship between the two starring characters, and Robert Duvall. I think of this movie as ‘the challenges of harsh times between a man and woman’, with a touch of romance.
I was introduced to this fine movie back in as I was alone, home sitting a huge fairly isolated country house built by the owners. Watching it was quite comforting, keeping me company in a situation which was mildly dangerous.
Besides, I wholeheartedly appreciate Kevin Costner’s many talents that continuously line up with what I value in this world. He is a jewel in our American entertainment productions!
I have not been able to recall it’s title. I finally found it, and I am thrilled! I’ll be purchasing and downloading it now.
I must have watched it at least times!

2. Excellent, underrated western - This one usually doesn’t make any of the top ten lists, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a well directed, acted, and shot film. Everything just comes together to make this movie work. The story is a nice, taut western melodrama that is absolutely believable. The acting from the awesome cast is superb. The photography is also excellent. Actually, there is very little NOT to like about this movie of revenge and redemption on the northern plains.
2014-06-14
3. Tough Western with a soft touch - Open Range doesn't have a perfect line. The tone switch from brutal hardness to romantic softness occurs in the blink of an eye. But it's probably the best from the Western genre I've seen since Unforgiven (). Kevin Costner is believable, hard and soft, and Robert Duvall and Annette Being are perfect for their roles. As a casual fan of Western movies, I can relay there aren't many that add the soft touch added at the end. The action and scenery are also great;. Open Range is A Fistful of Dollars with a Robin Hood ending. Grade: A-.

4. A true western not to be missed... - From the storyline of what the west was like, to the stunning beauty of the region this movie is an awesome testament to the talents of all the actors. Duval and Costner shine !!!
This review does not give the movie it's true kudos. Buy or rent...you will watch it many times over and you will not be disappointed!

5. Greatest Western Ever Made - This movie is likely the best western ever made and the most overlooked. It is, quite literally, flawless. Kevin Costner politely sidesteps and gives the lead to Robert Duval, and the two - actually their whole cattle drive team - work together to perfection. This movie can boast the best gunfight scene in the genre, but it also has the quaint sentimentality that Westerns should have. It is poetic in a way that life on the edge creates, it's tough and its full of hope. Perfect performances from everyone. Just a superb watch - I purchased it so I could watch it every months or so… I honestly don't think they imagined they were making something so wonderful, which is usually when it happens - this is THE Western for a fan of the genre and a great movie for those that dip in now and again.
2013-04-03
6. The Best of the Best - When Kevin Costner slips into his relaxed ego-less mode the result is remarkable. This movie has to stand as one of the greatest westerns of all time yet it's gentle, realistic pace is deceptive. Costner's easy dynamic with Duvall is amazing, though all characters are totally believable - a totally unexpected gem I could easily be persuaded that this was a true account of an historical event, it just has that easy reality. Nothing left to say except that if you like the genre I defy you not to become a fan of this unpretentious masterpiece.

7. A beautiful Western movie.. - This is without a doubt one of the most family oriented Westerns from the past twenty years. One of the best. The sountrack by Michael Kamen was one of his best. The photography and music made up for any weak points of the plot you could come up with. Speaking about sountrack, where is this soundtrack on iTunes????? Come one iTunes, let's get with it. The music was the highpoint of the whole show!
2010-11-28
8. Good western, see it, but... - I finally had the opportunity to see this film the other day, and I'll agree it's quite enjoyable. But when I read the many comments from other reviewers stating that it was "the best" or even "one of the best" westerns ever, I was really taken back. Heck, since we are talking about a film starring and directed by Kevin Costner, what about "Dances With Wolves?" Has Robert Duvall's "Lonesome Dove" been gone so long that many of the reviewers may never have seen it, not to mention may realize it was likely the inspiration for "Open Range"? If this movie was really enjoyable to you, I highly recommend seeing "Lonesome Dove". Despite all of the incredible performances Robert Duvall has done over the years, none can be as heartfelt as his role as retired Texas Ranger partner to Tommy Lee Jones, leading a herd of cattle from south Texas to Montana. Many feel this TV miniseries of earned their recommendation of "best western ever". While on the topic of great western shoot-out's such as the one at the end of "Open Range", don't miss Clint Eastwood's "The Outlaw Josie Wales" and "Pale Rider".

1. One of my favorite movies ever - News of the world is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen the acting is great and the movie deals with so many issues and themes and handles them beautifully the journey of the main characters and the bond they develop is so heartwarming and the things they go through is so emotional I was crying at the end but in a good way luckily the movie has a perfect ending that gives the main characters the peace they deserve I can’t believe the low ratings here with all of the crap that comes out of Hollywood lately news of the world is a rare treat definitely my favorite Tom hanks movie ever If you like the usual superhero action trash than stay away but if you like movies with meaning and emotion than news of the world will definitely not disappoint Highly recommended

2. Quality - I’ve been a big fan of the western genre all my life. At I wouldn’t like this movie as I was John Wayne/Clint Eastwood shoot ‘em up seeking. My taste in the western has evolvedWith Silverado, unforgiven, Appaloosa,And now I gladly add this movie to my list. No it’s not the OK corral. The battles are more internal then acted outWith bullets and blood shed. Way more true to life But also a testament to growing older. I hope everybody makes it to the point in life where they can appreciate the story that’s told in this movie whether it be through this movie or another.

3. Its a Drama, Not Action - Like my title says, watch this movie with the understanding that it's a drama, it's not an adventure or action movie. There are a few action scenes but nothing like a wild western. You can't appreciate this movie after watching say, Tombstone and expecting it to be like that. Its a heartfelt story about a man doing the right thing by helping a young lady find her way. I really enjoyed it and found it refreshing. I thought Tom Hanks was great in this. It's not five star keeper, but definitely one you should see. (when the rental price goes down or you find it elsewhere.)
2021-04-04
4. Hanks is as usual amazing - A fantastic western drama with amazing cinematography. Loved the idea of traveling town to town to read the news to the locals. Also the young actress that played Johanna (Cicada) was great and was able to keep up with Hanks! Definitely check this one out if you enjoy Westerns that involves more than just gunfights.
2021-03-29
5. Fairly to Midlin' - Scripts based on outstanding novels are hard to come by. Among motion picture attempts Sometimes a Great Notion is the worst, All The Pretty Horses is very poor, and No Country for Old Men rates among the best. This one is about average and not very good if you read the book. A bunch of crazy woke stuff tossed in that pretty much comes out of nowhere and just plain misses the beautiful and uplifting message in the book.
2021-03-26
6. Ignore naysayers and judge for yourself - Ignore the naysayers, Tom Hanks and Helena Zengel gave great performances. Slow at times but overall a good movie (worth a rental). Maybe instead of giving star reviews and complaining about the rental price of ., wait it out until films are available to rent at $. like I did before posting a review.
2021-03-24
7. Snooze fest with great actors. - I love Tom Hanks as everyone does, but this is the worst film he has been in. His acting is of course wonderful and supporting cast is very good too. I don’t know where this movie went wrong. The story is so slow and dull. Acting is great, but even with that it’s a very boring slow movie.
2021-03-17
8. To those complaining about the cost of this movie.... - Are you SERIOUS? You're giving a movie a bad review because you don't like the PRICE? When reviewing something, talk about craft. You know -- writing, directing, acting, cinematography, editing, etc. Don't have a hissy fit and smear the those things because you don't like the practice of inflating prices for movies that go directly to iTunes rather than to movie theaters.

2. Why Did the Color Change? - I bought this movie last year, and the picture looked amazing! However, the color grade has suddenly changed. The final duel now has a gross green and yellow look, when the colors looked natural just a year ago. The skin tone is totally off, and its clear they swapped out the digital file with a new one. Why make this change? From what I can tell by looking up older clips, the original film in didnt look this way. A modern film grade on a classic film makes no sense. Please restore it. Sergio Leones vision should be respected.

3. Mostly great - This is the Sergio classic. The civil war junk in the middle (in which desert did they have a major Civil War battle - I forget) could easily have been cut, but what you want is Eastwood, Wallach, they yodeling and the trumpet. Screen accurate serapes are available on the get, as are bolero hats, cheap whiskey and skinny little cigars. Stock up and have fun.

4. Greatest western movie of all time - I hate western movies. But this movie is just simply one of the absolute best epic movies of all time, regardless of its genre. Every single aspect is just perfect: story, action, acting, music, setting, historical accuracy, etc. Even in , this western is unmatched.

5. Not a review, just a plea - No need to review a classic like this....just look up at all the tomatoes. But PLEASE PLEASE make whatever royalty deal you need to do, to LET US BUY THIS...renting is fine for an unproven product, but an established classic like this, i think we all can agree it's a safe bet. PLease let us purchase this!!

6. Great Movie - This is one of my favorite movies, but it is hard for me to understand why it is only available to rent. I truly wish iTunes had a separate section for movies to buy and a separate one for movies to rent. I cannot think of anything more frustrating than clicking on a movie I'd enjoy buying to find out it's only available to rent. And I have no plans to waste my money renting movies.

1. Not a western, but a tribute! - If you squint long enough, you might start to look like the titular character. But you also might start to see an original spin on the Old-West drama that may be the best in a decade. This is not a Michael Bay testosterone flick, and, out of generosity, I’ll call the pace “considered”—but it serves-up tension so subtly, that as you’re drawn into Henry’s story, it starts to feel like a half-thriller in a manner reminiscent of that frontier-masterpiece, “Unforgiven.” Yes… some of the plot lines are predictable… but if you’re watching a Western without expecting at least a little of this, you’re off-genre. Instead, Old Henry offers you a new, slightly unexpected, way to connect to the myth of the frontier and the outlaw, and does so without ever over-reaching or underselling the idea.

2. A don't miss Western - reminds me of Clint Eastwood films - I rented this movie having never heard of it based on Rotten Tomato score of . Wow. It was excellent. The entire cast was very convincing and Tim Blake Nelson deserved a Best Actor nomination. Twist at the end that made the film even better. I think the movie did not do as well as it should have at the box office because of the title and lack of publicity (at least in my market) but hopefully has done well on video on demand as it is truly a great movie.

3. Great Western - As a youth I was enamoured with stories of the Ol' West. As a teen, I read (book! pre-internet) as much as I could regarding tales of William H Bonney aka Henry McCarty aka Billy the Kid. The movie is a tale acted out by just a few men who seemed to take pride in the story they were telling. No truths were actually proven here, uet the viewer decides on what they believe. A simple story for a simpler time. I was fortunate enough to see this for $. rental, but I would have gladly paid $ to rent and possibly $ to own. It was great to watch on a cold cold early early morning with the fireplace on. Enjoy, as I did immensily.

4. Good Story, Rendered Badly - I'm not sure what all the fuss is over this movie. stars? Hardly. at best for the nice twist at the end, but that's it. The story wasn't awful, even though it dragged on at first. What makes it suffer is the unlikable actors they chose. Tim Blake Nelson? Seriously? Why in the world they picked this goofball of a nerd to play the lead, I'll never know. Not to mention, his acting was robotic and unconvincing to me. I'm sorry, but he's forever going to be Delmer from O Brother Where Art Thou. That kind of role is what he's best at. Also, Stephen Dorff was your predicable villan, as usual. You know how it's all going to pan out; what he's going to say and do before it happens. It's a decent rental, but I wouldn't buy it or watch it again.

5. Absolutely Superb - As a western aficionado I found this film to be sublime. The carefully constructed cast was not overpopulated with unnecessary actors. I have watched this film over times and uncover something unique about this film during each viewing. I was surprised at the poetic writing for each character. I could go on for days. This is must watch for fathers and sons. Really well done!

6. Awesome - Very solid movie. I’m not even a fan of westerns, but this had my attention from beginning to end. Didn’t feel like there was any over dramatized dialogue or scenes. They kept it straight to the point with great delivery. There’s a tiny hint of “ no country for old men” to it, but definitely not a copy cat.
2021-12-26
7. Modern Day Twin - Tim resembles Mr McCarty in statue and face shape so much as to add value to this story. The tin type photo that everyone uses and the one used in the movie shows McCarty to be right handed but I once read that the tin type wa actually reversed and Billy the Kid was left handed. A lot of storys as to what really happened that night in Fort Sumner have changed and been left to interpetations over the years. Accolades to the acting , the story and the set production for taking us back in time

8. Old Henry - I love this western, the old Henry was perfect in this film! Such a twist in the end! It was by far the very best western movie I’ve seen in years. Thanks for making it available to rent and when the price comes down I will buy it for my collection! Tim Blake Nelson is one of my very favorite actors and was the reason I rented it!! He didn’t disappoint me. He was perfect in the role! Judy Hinton

1. Another scam from Apple… - I am getting tired of buying movies on iTunes. I bought the Dark Knight trilogy, twice, and both times I had to get my money back because Batman Begins had an audio issue. The audio track becomes out of sync several times throughout the beginning of the movie. Apple returned my money both times, but it’s just the hassle of it having to contact Apple and tell them what’s wrong with the movie. Now we come to this masterpiece. Great movie, but horrible K transfer. Everything looks… creamy. Sure, it sort of looks K, but when you’re looking at faces, it looks how it looks when you’re WiFi is not great and everything looks creamy, softened. Not only that, but the audio becomes low in places and then clicks back to being louder throughout the minutes I’ve been watching this flick. No wonder this flick was only .. Apple does this all the time. Lowers the prices to their movies and then when you watch them you discover all the problems as to why they sold it so cheap. I think I will be notifying Apple yet again and getting my . back. I also think I will be purchasing K movies and Blu-ray movies in disc format from now on. I really hate that Apple doesn’t give a hoot about the movies and tv shows they put up in their store. All they want is money so the cheapest route to more cash the better in their opinion. Meanwhile, we get stuck with utter garbage unless we gripe about it and get our money back. Bad thing is, they only give you store credit. They will never return your money. Sad. This is a classic and one of the greatest westerns aside from Tombstone. Guess you get what you pay for, huh? . for this? Thanks, Apple. Keep being sneaky as ever. And the thing is, they STILL sell these movies and don’t fix them at all.

2. Simply Put: The Greatest American Movie - Some films are timeless, their stories ring true throughout the years. A woman working as a prostitute is cut up by a local cowboy, and the women of Greely’s Beer Garden and Billiard Parlor decide to take the law into their own hands, against the iron will of the sheriff (Gene Hackman, in one of his finest roles). When gunslingers come to collect the reward, the little town of Big Whiskey will never be the same. It’s the story about Manifest Destiny, the Myth of the Gunslinger and of the American Dream. But most of all it’s a story about William Munny (Clint Eastwood), an ex-gunslinger who left the wild, drunken violence of his youth behind him when he married. With two youngsters to feed, the lure of a cash reward pulls Munny away from the peaceful hog farm, and sets him on the road to Big Whiskey, Wyoming. Along for the ride is Ned (Morgan Freeman), an old acquaintance from Will’s dark past, and The Scofield Kid (Jaimz Woolvett), an upstart raised on stories of the Wild West. On the road to Big Whiskey, however, the past has a way of coming back... And the reward money proves difficult to earn when the sheriff catches wind of it. They don’t make movies like this anymore. Full of rich layers, subtext, and symbolism, Clint Eastwood’s masterpiece is my favorite film of all time.

3. Greatest western ever made! - It was a close call between this and Tombstone. But plain and simple, they just don't make them like this anymore. Acting is top notch. It's something you just want to watch over again. A nostalgic feeling and remembrance for the past will leave you wishing other westerns were made of this quality. A nod to Eastwood on a job well done!

4. The Real Deal - Unforgiven is definitely the best Western movie from the last years, and ranks among the Top Westerns of all time. It has everything you would want from a Western- action, drama, and plenty of manly toughness. The only reason I wouldn't rank Unforgiven as the best all time Western is because the story line is based on revenge, although even that is carried out with a sense of right. Otherwise, Unforgiven is the real deal. It's a must for fans of the Western genre or movies in general.

5. Awesome - Another great western pops up when I thought westerns had gone by the wayside, and who else can bring it, than Clint baby. Great performance by Gene Hackman and of course everyone else. But my favourite part is Richard Harris sharing his views on the difference between monarchy and democracy was classic. Enjoy folks.

6. Unforgiven. Wow - Definitely one of my favorites Eastwood portrays a man in desperate times. He gives fear in his weathered eyes and has the look of a rattle snake before a strike. An outlaw gone good then bad again. Freeman is on point and the voice of reason and partnership. You must see this movie

7. seems okay now - I'll be honest when I first saw this movie a while back I really loved it but I've watched it again recently and it seems like nothing special. The acting is kind of overdone and the plot feels simplistic. I still like it don't get me wrong but I don't think it's anything special and I definitely don't think it deserved all the awards it got. To this day I still think tombstone and high plains drifter are the best westerns.

8. Very very average - I've seen all the great westerns...and this isn't one of them. I can't belive it has a % rating. Bizarre. It's not bad, but nowhere near worthy of critical acclaim as every other viewer below me suggests. Certainly a poor example of a classic western. I'm sorry Clint, you are Unforgiven for directing, producing and starring in this movie.

1. Proof that TV westerns can be great movies - You see this is how you do a movie adaptation of a TV series. You get yourself a compotent director, a good cast, and a good script. I applaud Richard Donner for making this fun adaptation of the classic 's TV series. Mel Gibson, before going bat-crap crazy in the K's, was a fitting choice for the role of Bret Maverick. I am glad that James Garner, the original Maverick, got to have a part in this film. I was also glad that one of my favorite actors James Coburn was in this film too. Jodie Foster also does great with her role. The story feels like a great adaptation of the original TV series. Now......why didn't Barry Sonnenfield take this film as an example of how to do an adaptation of a TV western when he did the utter fail that is Wild Wild West? (I am seriously hoping for the series to come out on iTunes soon). I recommend this movie to fans of the original 's TV western and western fans in general. So, check it out.

2. Great movie, but overpriced - I love this movie and watched it on DVD often. I thought I'd get the digital file here as well but cant understand why so many of the movies on iTunes are $. when they are in the Walmart DVD bargain bin for $-$. If its cheap on DVD, it should be cheap here too. Its only a data file for crying out loud.

3. Classic, Playful and Hilarious! A must have! - This movie should go down as one of the most fun-filled, playful comedies featuring some of the most classic western character actors ever played. The "Maverick" character in the TV show made his living trying to swindle everyone else with his poker antics...now here everyone else is trying to swindle him! And he gets them back! This is non-stop hilarity at it's best, the cameos from days past will keep you on your toes, and the interplay between Gibson, Garner and Foster are priceless. This is one movie that takes top billing in my library whenever I need a quick "attitude adjustment." This is a movie you will never tire from...Thank you Burt!...er....BRET Maverick!

1. Can’t stop thinking about this movie - Every. Single. Shot. And. Dialogue is phenomenal! A true classic that shouldn’t be forgotten! My only kick is that the Mexican army attacked the Alamo times (successfully entering the Alamo on the th try), but the film shows only two attacks with the first being Santa Anna just measuring their strength. I read the filmmaking struggled with the budget so this becomes more forgivable, but Santa Anna was not some genius who could take the Alamo at any time. He FAILED three times before the successful fourth try. Billy Bob Thornton, Patrick Wilson, and the composer and cinematographer should have been all nominated for academy awards.

2. The Alamo History - The only reason that what happened at the Alamo happened, was because of two problems. Land and slaves. Settlers had been coming to Texas for the fertile land and for money. They had to obey Mexican laws, become Mexican citizens, exc. But the Texans Broke the rules an brought in slaves because the ground was perfect for farming. Skipping forward a bit, there was a rebellion and members of that rebellion were at the Alamo. Santa Anna sent of his troops and lead them personally. He was cruel and ruthless, killing even his own soldiers. He surrounded the Alamo and attacked in the small hours of the morning. Nobody there survived except Susanna Dickenson, who recorded the story of what happened.

3. Critics are wrong about this movie - Critics have complained that the movie is too ‘talky’ and that it moves too slowly. The same complaint is made about the John Wayne version. Perhaps, if you grew up on Transformers or X-Men or some other ‘entertainment’ that is all flash and bang and no substance. “Alamo” gives us a feeling of what the men were like and how they came to be in such a situation in the first place. After all, this movie is about a siege that lasted days. What do you expect? The “Alamo” is a great depiction of leadership, group dynamics, and what happens to men trapped in such a situation. What “Alamo” movies do not give you is much context, especially about why the Texians rebelled in the first place. Hollywood tends to assume that it was some sort of land grab. It was not. Texas was settled by large numbers of Americans who were encouraged to move there, first by Spain, then by Mexico. The settlers were reasonably good Mexican citizens and there was little talk of secession until Santa Ana rose to power. Santa Ana suspended the Constitution of , took away all civil rights, increased taxes, appointed himself dictator, and threatened to invade the United States. This provoked a general uprising in Texas and some other places in Mexico. Almost none of this history is discussed in the movie. It should be, as it explains why both Mexicans and Americans living in Texas rebelled. But overall, a good movie that takes fewer historical liberties than most previous efforts. I really enjoy the relationship depicted between Travis and Bowie. It feels ‘real.'

4. Just Amazing - I am and I first what he'd this movie in my history class but of course we never got to finish it. So I went home, got on my ipad and rented it and overall it is an amazing movie filled with facts. I wish I could purchase it. So if your not sure if your like it or not get it anyways because I know you will like it!!!

5. Biased review by a Texan - This is by no means a perfect movie, but very worth viewing. More accurate than previous treatments and beautifully filmed, I find this to be a very under-appreciated movie. It is too bad that it was such a failure at the box office but don't judge it by that. Give it a view.
2012-02-29
6. Amazing! - This movie is one where the critics got it absolutely wrong. I have never seen a more underrated movie in my life. As a Texan, I have a huge love for the rich history Texas has and this film captured the Texan view of the Siege of the Alamo. It doesn't need to be more "Hollywood", in fact, it is the grittiness and the rawness that make this film so perfectly Texan. I watch it all the time, just as everyone should.
2012-02-03
7. One Word: WOW - Do not listen to the reviews from the "top critics." They will tell you they want a certain type of movie and when pure brilliance is before their eyes they bash it. When I think of my favorite books or favorite songs, I often have a debate going through my mind. When it comes to movies though, this is by far the best. The acting is superb despite what they say, the music is beautifully eerie, and the scenery is just superb. The script is almost poetic and many things are taken right from the historical documents, as a historical fiction piece should be. This movie never gets old.
2011-03-02
8. Good History. Tough Marketing Project, though - All the reviewers complaining about the politics of the film are missing the point. True, the historical Texas colonists were by large number Americans. True, they were mostly Southerners. True, many of these Southerners were slaveholders (for a while at least - few of the white Southerners who came to Texas with slaves in the s couldn't afford them any longer by ). But to say that the the plot of this film somehow glorifies slavery grossly oversimplifies it. First, while the desire of maintaining slavery was economically important to some of the wealthiest Texas colonists, most were poor farmers looking for opportunity in the West. There were also empire-builders, con men, religious evangelicals, oppressed Europeans, etc. In short, there were MANY reasons why the White Texans were there. There were also a plethora of reasons to fight. Mexico became, under Santa Ana, a military dictatorship. Very few Texicans bristled under Mexican leadership until Santa Ana essentially tore up the liberal Mexican Constitution on his quest for imperial leadership. This pitted many native Mexicans (Tejanos) against him as well. The actual history was NOT simply about White Racists seeking to kill Mexicans and expand slavery. Each Texican had their own reasons for fighting. The reasons were as varied as the Whites and Hispanics who fought against Mexico. Mostly, though, the colonists fought against what they quite rightly believed was tyranny. Santa Ana may have had his concerns about gringos moving westward, but it wasn't so he could curb American expansionism - it was exclusively to preserve his own dictatorship. That's where this fine film fits in. It fairly addresses the history - from both sides (the only "monster" in the film was arguably the character of Santa Ana. That may or may not be fair. But what is accurate is that even modern Mexican historians hold him contempt for quite reasonably assigning most of Mexico's problems to his self-serving, and ultimately disasterous leadership). It also shows that the Texas Revolution wasn't strictly an Anglo affair. It paints the little-considered aspect of Tejanos (who considered themselves more Spanish than Mexican), and their mutual struggles against a tyrant. The film even strikes a good compromise on the fate of Davy Crockett - historians have been largely uncertain of precisely how he met his death. "The Alamo" picks the most reasonable version of Crockett's demise. Also the performances are top-notch. Billy Bob Thornton's Crockett is the best - and possibly most accurate - treatment of Crockett the legend in film history. Patrick Wilson's interpretation of Travis was surprisingly accessible. The audience at once grasps his self-centeredness and his courage. The battle scenes are opulent and largely historically accurate. The director, John Lee Hancock, chose to retell a moment of history with, well, historical accuracy. This may have been the film's only failing. It is difficult to get positive reviews from a film review community that seemed - especially at that time - to be more concerned with a film's political implications than it's actual intentions. Good history is not always a good story to all readers. In the end, though, this film was not about racism, the political ramifications of war, the oppression or liberation of a people. It wasn't even really much about heroism. What it was about was how for days, over years ago, men waited the long, lonely wait for inevitable death. The drama of the film is as palpable as the drama of the hapless men who lost their lives at the Alamo. If you're interested in real history, this is your film.

1. . stars - A Fistful of Dollars is an excellent movie. It is stylistic, exciting, well acted, and well written. A Fistful of Dollars also does something that not many movies can do, and makes you really hate the antagonist. The cinematography is pretty fantastic too. I would recommend watching this if you are a fan of westerns.

2. A towering great of a B movie - Sergio Leone shows that a movie doesn’t need a lot of character development, or a logical plot, if you make clear, simple rules and stick to them. Clint Eastwood wanders into a Mexican village in the grip of two evil families, and they get what they ought to, with a lot of good gunplay, fine camera work and editing along the way. There are plenty of clichés, but they're part of a ritual we all know, so they don’t jar much. The bad guys are despicable, and the violence is convincing. And the music is incomparable.

3. Got screwed by iTunes - I purchased this film, YES … purchased the film, back in February of . The th to be exact.
I paid $. for the HD version of it. It was on sale then through iTunes, but, somewhere in May, or so, of , iTunes decided to revert the film to rent only status. Thus limiting the ownership. Here’s the crappy part. If you didn’t actually have a downloaded copy of the film on one of your devices, or otherwise stored on an external harddrive … poof, the film disappears from your iTunes movie section. I did not have a copy downloaded at that time, when iTunes made this film “rent only.” I rarely do for any of my movies because of space limitation on my Mac Book Pro. And I do not have an external drive for storage. I simply relied upon the fact that anytime I wanted to download the film, I could click on the download cloud icon overlaid on the movie poster within “my movies.” Or better said, I relied on the fact that I engaged in a monetary transaction with apple iTunes, that which I thought would have been upheld, even by them. I had email and bank verification of the money I spent. Here’s the kicker. iTunes takes the movie away. That is, the icon of the movie poster disappears in the “my movies” section. And of course there is no downloaded copy that I have on my harddrive. But iTunes doesn’t even refund me the money. HAHAhaha. Seriously. I don’t get an email, no notification, no monetary refund that the movie I paid for, which is no longer available to me, has just been taken away. Imagine buying a physical copy of the film from some vendor and three months later the vendor walks into your house, takes the disc back, and tells you to shut your mouth, and oh by the way, you won’t be getting your money back … That’s what happened. I scratched my head at all of this nonsense. I contacted iTunes, demanded a refund, they refused!
I then demanded they allow me to download the film one last time, they refused. The only thing they were willing to do was give me three movie rental credits. Ha. Each credit valued at three dollars and cents ($.), to be used toward future RENTALS. Unreal. It wasn’t even the amount of money that I paid originally for the film. . . x . I felt totally ripped off. And, NO, I haven’t used any of the credits. And, NO, I haven;t spent a penny since then, nor will I. Mafia? - Nope, iTunes. Forget about it.

4. A fistful of money for nothing...movie's great, though - So I bought this. Loved it, of course. THEN, it disappears from my library. Now, Apple says we can only rent it. I contact Apple. They say, "sorry, it isn't available to own." BUT I BOUGHT IT!! When one buys something, you are supposed to own it and have access to it when you want. Not with Apple. So be warned. When you buy something on here, Apple can take it back (and keep your money) whenever the feel like it...
POOR BUSINESS PRACTICE. No wonder Apple stock has dropped so far. Zero innovation, poor customer relations, and an elitist sense of entitlement. As for the movie, AWESOME! this movie defines the genre. Characters don't exist like this anymore. Buy...oops...I mean...rent it. Or better yet, get it from somewhere else.

5. A REAL Western Classic! - This movie began the 'Dollars' trilogy, portraying Clint Eastwood as a soft-spoken, laconic, cigarillo-chewing drifter whose gun is faster than the blink of an eye. In this film, 'Joe' (as he is nicknamed by the characters) rids the town of San Miguel of two vicious crime families-and turns a profit! The villains are whittled down through tricking them into fighting one another, while Eastwood collects money as a hired gun and informer. 'Joe' appears totally amoral, but goes to the trouble of saving the captive mistress of a crime boss and her family, giving a rare insight into his humanity. In the final, unforgettable shootout, armored under his trademark green poncho, 'Joe' shoots down the remaining villains and rides off into the sunset, having given his friends (the innkeeper and the town coffin maker) a safe future. Ennio Morricone's score perfectly complements Sergio Leone's direction. In particular, we see the faces of the characters, greasy, pockmarked, and whiskered-like the real west. You can watch the faces and see exactly what's going to happen before it does; it's that good. Other directors used the landscape as a canvas-Leone used the actors, and he did a great job with it. This is one of the best films of all time.

6. "Better get three coffins ready"- Clint Eastwood - Man, this movie just screams cool. I would recommend it to anyone who likes westerns and Akira Kurosawa........what's that? You don't know what I mean by "anyone who likes Akira Kurosawa"? Well, I'll explain it. In , Akira Kurosawa created the awesome as it could be Yojimbo (can Apple find anyway of uploading that and Sanjuro?). It had the feel of a good western. So, Sergio Leone decided to make a plot similar to Yojimbo, but set it in the west. It actually fits with this film. Too bad he didn't get all of the rights to this film though. Oh well, I still like both of them. All in all, seee both of them and see what you think.

7. When a man with a pistol meets a man with a rifle - As someone said over on "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly," they don't make them like this anymore. They can't. This trilogy, along with other all-time cineman greats, has to be appreciated for what it is and is not [and did not need to be]. This movie could never be re-done without losing its raw, elemental nature. It is a product of its time. And timeless. We are the fortunate ones who get to watch it.
2008-12-29
8. Great story.... in any language - As someone mentioned, this is the western version of Kurosawa's Yojimbo. Great story in any language and translates beautifully into the old west setting. Clint portrays the character well and cinematography is used masterfully. Much of Kurosawa's camera work was duplicated almost exactly to great effect. A must have in any classic collection.

1. Very enjoyable western - Tom Selleck’s performance as the understated American cowboy who travels to Australia is great. Playing a rugged, decent American who passes up the chance to make a lot of money killing Australian aborigines, Selleck is very convincing. Alan Rickman also does a convincing job playing the Australian ranch owner who hires Selleck. Few could probably do as good of a job playing the obsessive rancher. I wasn’t convinced by Laura San Giacomo who played the part of “Crazy Cora,” but her performance didn’t harm the film overall.

2. Classic ‘western’! - Takes place in Australia, but it’s definitely of the Western genre. Amazing move and certainly an under-rated one. It came out just a few years before CGI came into use, so it has a very really and authentic feel. The HD version here on iTunes is good quality, and the movie has an overall good ‘film grain’ to it which fits the movie well. If you’ve never seen it, see it now!

3. Unbelievably Pleasant Surprise - My best friend and I were among many given free tickets at the cinema, probably in the hopes that it would generate good word-of-mouth. We laughed at the title and the star but quickly changed our minds because it was awesome! Everyone I know that’s seen it feels the same—I don’t know anyone who expected it to be this good but everyone loves it.

4. Dances With Dingos - Depsite the deriviative plot (i.e. White Guy saves the "noble savages" from other white guys, laconic American is x better at everything than the uncouth Australians and the pompous brits) the film is entertaining, if for no other reason than Selelcks understated performance coupled with Alan Rickman being Alan Rickman (Which is a good thing). My one complaint is that Laura San Giacomo handles the "Crazy Cora" parts well, but just doesn't pull off the "sympathetic Cora" parts with the same believability. Still, it's a fun picture to watch despite it's flaws.

5. "I've said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it." - Under the rubble of underratedness comes a review of this western classic......only, this film removed the traditional western character from the Western frontiers of America and brought him to the harshness of Austrailia. Tom Selleck [who I swear appears to belong in this kind of role] portrays Matthew Quigley, a cowboy who is hired because of his great sharpshooting skills with a Sharps rifle, who takes on the corrupt rancher [Hans Gruber....I mean, Alan Rickman] that wants to kill the indigenous natives. [To be kind of frank, I think Avatar ripped this movie off too......think about it. A man who was hired for a specific job decides to defend the natives.........James Cameron has yet to admit he got that idea from this film too!] The duel at the end is one of my all-time favorite scenes in cinema, hence where the title of my review came from. Overall, check this movie out. You will not regret it.....now, if only I could tell this crazy woman to stop calling me Roy already.

6. An American Cowboy in Australia - . . . . . Clap
Clap . . . . . Clap
. . . . . . Clap A round-of applause for Quigley! I think this is my all-time favorite Western.... Australian..... movie. Oh, well. Who cares what category it's in! It's Great! Tom Selleck's and Alan Rickman's characters are such opposites in this film. I'm not too crazy about either Laura San G. or her character, but what the heck. Whatever it takes to shine a brighter spotlight on Quigley. The bonus here is that the scenery is absolutely beautiful, definitely way ahead of that other Aussie movie with horses, cattle and Hugh Jackman - oh, yes, and Nicole Kidman. (Liked that film, too.)

7. Wait until it's cents again - This movie was made by a guy who:
A. Has read a book about Australia and
B. Has seen two western movies- The Magnificent Seven (maybe just heard the soundtrack) and one with Clint Eastwood. What he learned was:
. Cowboys wear chaps and spurs always- even onboard a ship!
. A man who makes his living with a high-precision firearm will use it also for a bludgeon and a vaulting pole.
. It takes oxen to pull one wagon with people on it and horses to pull one wagon with people on it. (oxen will later vanish).
. If you bring two women to an Australian sheep ranch, one of them will vanish (perhaps with the oxen?)
. There’s never any work to do on an Australian sheep ranch. Stands to reason as there are only about two dozen sheep.
. If you want to leave two people to die in a desert, be sure to a. Pack along his gun and, b. Bring hats for both of them
. If lost in the Outback, the Aboriginals will find you and a. Wash your clothes b. Help you shave
. While wandering in the Outback, a. You will find gloves and a duster coat b. Your bandana will change colors
. Those western shirts are really tough!
. You can write a part for Clint Eastwood but, if Tom Selleck is all you can afford, you’d better show some (native) boobs or you’ll never sell any tickets.

8. One Of The Best - In a world where so many movies are cranked out with poor story lines, horrible acting and terrible camera work, it is becoming harder and harder to find something worthy of watching. "Quigley Down Under" is superior in both acting and story. The photography is beautiful. The quality of this film far surpasses most of the westerns made today. You will not be disappointed in watching this. It goes to show that special effects are not needed to make a high quality and entertaining film. Bravo for a film that shows us what entertainment is all about. Definitely one of my top ten.
