1. Science Fiction in Name Only - Ted Chiang is described as a science fiction writer but that is too restrictive. I don’t read or like science fiction but I heard Chiang on a podcast, became mesmerized, so I read, and loved, these stories. All of them have other worldly elements to them but these are not what the stories are about. Rather, they allow Chiang to explore philosophical questions about life, knowledge, time, the nature of beauty, the meaning of devotion. This is a gorgeous book.

1. Second Survey of Chinese Science Fiction by Ken Liu - “Broken Stars” the second anthology surveying contemporary Chinese Science Fiction by author and translator Ken Liu. It includes Hugo Award winning authors like Cixin Liu and Hao Jingfang. It also includes other stories selected by Ken Liu to illustrate the current range of science fiction in China. Like many anthologies that undertake to survey a type of fiction, some stories will be more to the reader's taste than others. There are forwards which introduce each author and their work, which is very useful to western readers. In addition there are three essays in the back of the book which provide perspectives on the history and current state of science fiction in China. I thought this volume was a bit more uneven that its predecessor, “Invisible Planets.” It tries to include a wider variety of stories, and some of these were not as approachable to me at least. However, they were interesting to try to figure out.

1. Good stuff - Lots of great stories in here. It's a whole new type of science fiction. I'm not even sure if I would label it as science fiction to be honest. Some stories are slow some are fast, but most have solid characters you can relate to. If you can't get into one of the stories go to the next one although I recommend finishing them. The endings are great. The story of "Your life and others" is truly breathtaking. It's no wonder they've made it into a film.

1. Exceptional. - I've been a huge fan of George R. R. Martin ever since I stumped upon the original book of a song of ice and fire a few years ago. His writing style and the pure intelligence in his words makes you question the characters, their actions, their decisions, and even their speech. Tuf Voyaging is no different. A 'humble' trader, Haviland Tuf, is thrust into the role of a god, or ecological engineer when he stumbles upon the last EEC Seedship, the Ark. This is the story of his adventures, his triumphs, and his legacy in the annals of universal history. The main plot (in my eyes at least) are the sequences regarding Suthlam, with the others being a bit more character development and flavor of Tuf himself. I can't really say more without ruining any of the actual plot, but if you read anything today, make sure Tuf Voyaging is at the top of your list.

2. Tuf is one cool cat! - Very good book. Hard sci-fi with good sense of humor; a nice change of pace from other GRR Martin books that I've read lately. I was very pleasantly surprised by the many (and expert) illustrations included in the book. (iOS users double tap the image to open it so it can be viewed / pinch to zoom in/out). Highly Recommended!

1. Stories In Honor of the Master - Jack Vance’s Dying Earth is one of his most memorable settings, and has inspired generations of both readers and writers. The world of the old and failing red sun, where both magic and the remaining vestiges of super science hold sway over the decadent descendants of mankind. This is the setting that Jack Vance set so many lyrical tales, and it is this setting that a wide selection of writers that he inspired have set their stories. This volume contains some of the best known fantasy writers work: George R. R. Martin, Tainth Lee, Neil Gaiman, and Dan Simmons are some of the more notable contributors. Most of the stories are good, some are indeed great. All of them are written in honor of the man who inspired them with his tales from near the end of world.

1. let it 'sink in' - like good chocolate you have to let each story, 'melt in your mouth'. I would recommend this to anyone who can appreciate what a genius dick was & still is even today. but please do not read these short stories cover to cover. each story is special & you should allow it to stand on its own.

1. Fantastic - This collection is verbose and vibrant. Liu's mastery of the english language is complete. I cannot imagine a more poignant and powerful collection. I genuinely teared up for the first time in years while reading the title story of this collection. I cannot recommend these stories enough. Please take the time to enjoy and appreciate.

2. Excellent Collection by an Award Winning Author! - I recommend reading this excellent collection by Ken Liu. It covers several genres, some of the stories are fantasy, and some deal with horrible elements (although these are often historical rather than supernatural). There are other stories that are entirely science fictional. All of the stories are well written, I see why they give this guy so many awards! These are powerful small doses of thoughts and ideas that unfold in your mind like a chrysanthemum blooming, long after you read them. One example is the titular story that is only pages long, about the relationship between a Chinese-American son and his mail-order bride mother from Hong Kong. She has the magical power of making origami animals that come to life. This is a very poignant tale, that won the Nebula Award. It is unlikely to leave you unmoved... Mr. Liu has went on to writing a series of "silk-punk" epic fantasy novels and translating the works of Chinese authors. This collection is his shorter work that he was writing and publishing before he became as well know as he now is. It clearly shows his talent and various styles.
