1. A big help, recommended - I just finished writing out flash cards as recommended by the author. I also wrote out a card for each example sentence. So now I have a HUGE bundle of flash cards & the challenge will be to STUDY them. I really liked this book & it helped me. You should memorize Hiragana & Katakana first. (I made myself an awesome chart). That way, you can focus on the vocabulary & sentences in this book. I think the process of converting Romaji to Hiragana gets your brain working in that mode. Is there a Vol ? I couldn't find it.

1. Most Important Japanese Book of All! - I love, love, love this book! This book gives you such a fundamental understanding of Kanji because it shows you the pictographs the evolved from. Once you understand that the Kanji for 'tree' is based on a drawing of a tree, not only will you never forget it, but it will also allow you to unlock the meaning of dozens of other Kanji as well. I have the paperback version, but I'm so happy this was put on iBooks : )

1. Somewhat dated but a fascinating series of essays. - This book will not teach you Japanese. It will teach you about Japanese. Though the description suggests it's beginner-friendly — and it is in fact even readable by those who speak no Japanese at all — it's most interesting if you can speak the language and find the idea that the use of "desu" and "masu" was a contested topic not very long ago, to pick a random example. If you're interested in linguistics and society and how the two intersect, this is a fascinating time capsule into the post-World War II era, when people started asking questions about what to do about the Japanese language itself.
