1. Phenomenal - This is THE best book I’ve ever read. It is a true masterpiece. I highly recommend it. It’s a very long book, but the way it is written made me want to savor every chapter. I could see the entire story in my mind and it was like watching an amazing movie based on a true story and real people. I’ve never been so immersed in a story and so touched by its characters. This book has something for every reader. Philosophy, action, drama, romance, and history.

1. Concise but thorough and very interesting - Articulate with keen observations littered throughout - very accessible and not academic and made to be both educational and entertaining - not in the least bit dry. Truly is comprehensive in its scope and evaluations on both historic and modern society and what we have to thank the mongols for - I strongly encourage you to read this book

2. A new look at an old story - “Fate did not hand Chinnguis Khan [aka Gengis Khan]his destiny. He made it himself. It seemed highly unlikely that he would have ever had enough horses to create a Spirit Banner, much less that he would follow it all over the world.” This fascinating overview of the life and times of Gengis Khan is well worth the time to track down and read. Jack Weatherford has presented Khan as a unifier of the scattered Mongols as well as a shaper of his own future. Based upon the divergence of friendship and enmity, Khan developed what we now see as modern warfare techniques and the skelton of a government not see previously . Weatherford contends Gengis Khan May have changed the world, but did not let the world change him, returning to his roots for rest, reflection and recharging. With each chapter, the author brings us deeper into the life of a man who changed the world to save others from being abused as he was. In this way, he helped to change the aspects and safety of his people far beyond his lifetime. This is a book to read and return to. Highly recommended / [disclaimer: I read this library ebook after hearing an author I follow talk about it. I have chosen to read and review it, and I hope someday to own a copy]

3. Names Mispronounced In Audio Version - I agree it’s a well written book and well researched. Unfortunately, after speaking to a native Mongolian, I learned the company that created the audio version mispronounce most, if not all, of the names. I would have been easy to find a Mongolian to coach the narrator on the proper pronuciations of the people and places so that the wrong sound is not etched into the listener's memory.

1. History according to Military Industrial complex - Another biased and mostly pro-Western narratives. Yes, there are atrocities & sufferings on all sides. But the big question, why did US went there in first place to prop up faltering French occupation, instead of supporting independence of Vietnam? This is not history, this is a perversion of history to absolve US military industrial complex.

1. We Are A Sick Bunch - In December , the Japanese army swept into Nanjing. Within weeks, (hundreds of?) thousands of Chinese civilians and soldiers were systematically raped, tortured, and murdered. As a history teacher who is half Japanese and living in China, I felt it was essential to better educate myself on this brutal massacre. The Rape of Nanking is at times a very gruesome read, and the pictures are absolutely shocking, but it's an account that is of fundamental importance. Unfortunately, many historians have found numerous mistakes in Iris Chang's book. Although some of those mistakes have been corrected in the updated edition, the book has still been a source of controversy. Despite that, I have been made aware of a tragic event that I before knew very little about. Upon completion of the book, my wife and I visited the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall where a bronze statue stands in Iris Chang's honor. She passed away in .

1. One of the very best - If you read any book about the Vietnam War read this of “We Few” both by Brokhausen. These Special Forces recon units within MACSOG were the most decorated and their units had the highest casualty rate, over %. But apart from the combat, there is the futility of the US decision to turn the war over to the South Vietnamese, basically abandoning the country to the communists after losing so much. Prescient of the subsequent wars where the US fights until the liberal media decides its time to quit, then we leave the Iraqis or Afghans to reap the whirlwind, gaining only dead and damaged heroes as reminders of our country’s lack of backbone! Our enemies see this weakening, as they grow stronger, so a time of reckoning is coming and one day we will have to fight for survival.

1. Excellent - Well written account covers what the Japanese government was thinking and doing, what what the U.S. government and military was doing during the days. Also details the long list of atrocities perpetrated by the Japanese military. The author provides a thorough debunking of many of the accusations that try to make the case dropping the bomb was not needed to get the Japanese to surrender.

1. Daughters of the Samuri - My earliest memories are about my families travel by rail and ship from Ohio to Japan. Our home was filled with Japanese dolls, flower arrangements, furniture and more. This book immediately grabbed my attention and held it from cover to cover. Every woman, regardless of Eastern or Western orientation should read this book. It is inspiring.

1. Something missing - This articulate and thoughtful book is marred in this edition only by the omission of the photographs found in the hardcover print edition. The same omission in The Rape of Nanking leaves the reader with an incomplete experience in reading these fine works. Come on, Apple. Many of your other books have the photos and text. These two books deserve to be presented in their entirety.

2. An Important Work in American History - Iris Chang's 'The History of Chinese in America' is an important work and should be required reading for any modern American history class. It reads with a smooth flow and covers great range of contributions and triumphs, as well as too many tragedies to speak of. It is just as much about the powerful taking advantage of the less powerful, in general, as it is about the plight of various generations and groups of emigres. Even though the author reminds the reader that the conditions most left were far far worse than their plight in America, it is still an ugly realization for the reader that the ideal of America isn't a given at all for the Chinese immigrant, and frankly most groups of immigrants in general. It's a great read, and fills gaps in knowledge formed by the little coverage Asia and Asian Americans received in history classes over the years. Read it. You'll be happy you did.
