1. For all trauma survivors - PERSONAL RATING DIRECTED AT TRAUMA SURVIVORS As a survivor who has only had issues during times of family drama brought on by either my parents or siblings, I thought I had the past taken care of years ago with therapy in my twenties. I was surprised when the darkness returned and again took control of my life in my mid-fifties, bringing all of its friends. In search for the how and the why of its return and new therapies to replace talk therapy, I purchased an almost useless mental health book, only useful in that it offhandedly mentioned The Body Keeps the Score, Dr. Van der Kolk’s medical studies, and unique therapies for trauma, PTSD, and the many comorbid disorders that accompany trauma. I was curious. I purchased the audio book and after two hours of listening, I purchased the book. After a day including two additional hours, I purchased my daughter the audiobook, and purchased the book for her husband (three deployments, two of which were in Afghanistan). I gave both of them trigger warnings, although I have had only “so that is why!” reactions. Dr. Van der Kolk has spent his life in complete curiosity surrounding PTSD, studying trauma causing PTSD and its lifelong effects on a person’s mind and body. He walks you step by step through different traumas and gives patients’ firsthand experiences of its effects. In the second section, he discusses different therapies, studies, with firsthand experiences from patients who have undergone various treatments. As he mentioned those treatment I began taking notes and looking for therapists who used some of the therapies. You don’t have to take notes if you have the book. He has every quote, study, or book he has mentioned or quoted text from broken down by chapters in Notes. The Notes section is after Resources and Further Reading and before Index at the back of the book. I have just begun the path to heal the trauma, and am hopeful it will be my last time dealing with “those” memories. I have become empowered with knowledge. I see the fifty-plus year old invisible trail of destruction that has lead, rarely trailing my life. Post-trauma years physical damage has included back, neck, and shoulder pain, migraines, abdominal issues, etc. The mental health alphabet includes Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, OCD, etc., which act as self protection, need to finally take a much needed rest. The Body Keeps the Score has taught me this. The trail is now visible, and I am making changes and asking for help to become whole and heal that inner child. She can now become a healthy part of me no longer needing her army, her only protectors early in life, but who never got the message telling them to stand down - the danger was gone.

2. Once Praised, Now Criticized (& Allegations Fly) - When I first read about C-PTSD, I read Dr. Judith Herman’s “Trauma and Recovery” (as she’d recognized and named the condition first, in , and published her book in ). I then read “The Body Keeps the Score” because of the buzz. What I found was that Dr. Herman’s work showed the history of PTSD, how she came to recognize this ‘new’ type of trauma, which parts of the brain were affected, and some ideas about how to treat it, depending on where the trauma came from. In , it was reprinted with current information, noting that not much had changed since . Another edition came out in . All three were called “the foundational text for understanding trauma survivors.” In , after two editions of “Trauma and Recovery” had come out and much research had been done on C-PTSD, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk published “The Body Keeps the Score.” His credentials were three decades of work with trauma survivors at his private office, the Trauma Center at JRI. No insurance was accepted there, so it was only available to the upper-middle-class and beyond. Though anyone can be repeatedly traumatized, it is less likely that people with more money experience it in many aspects of their lives on a regular basis throughout the majority of their lives. Note: his previous books, published in , , and focus solely on PTSD. TBKTS is the first to mention C-PTSD. I gave this book one star for the easier-to-understand descriptions of neurology and how trauma affects our brains and bodies on both an infinitesimal and a total-body scale. However, there it ended its usefulness to me and to most people living with C-PTSD. Dr. van der Kolk introduced various recovery methods, including EMDR, biofeedback, play, yoga, etc. As therapeutic devices, economic accessibility is low, though the treatments themselves may be extremely helpful. I have Medicaid that pays for every specialist and type of care I’ve ever needed. No one has ever referred me to these treatments — likely because they won’t take any insurance or they don’t want to deal with Medicaid. Either way, the lack of attention paid to the average person with C-PTSD was concerning. Several years later, I heard that much of his past was … questionable: he defended repressed memory theory; used psychomotor therapy, which is not widely practiced nor supported by clinical studies; discourages talk-therapy, which allows a trauma victim to tell and claim their story/stories and to have structured support while they do so until it’s mostly a normalized memory of an unfortunate event, rather than able to trigger and cause fear responses; was mentored by the infamous fraud, Bruno Bettleheim; was cagey when describing what records he had and had kept and to what degree of security relating to “Dissociation and the Fragmentary Nature of Traumatic Memories: Overview and Exploratory Study” which is published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress, Volume , Number , ; was ultimately kicked out of the Trauma Center by its parent org, the Justice Resource Institute, due to charges of creating a hostile work environment to women and then claimed the JRI did so to steal $. million in donations to the Trauma Center—long story short: he sued the JRI, they settled out of court, and he founded another trauma center with that money. Meanwhile, the original Trauma Center at JRI closed for good in . So while his book may have been useful, especially to those who never heard about Dr. Herman, whose shoulders Dr. van der Kolk stood on to make his mark nearly years later, some of his methods, the source of his tutelage, his inaccessibility to those who think/thought they needed him most, and being permanently barred from the JRI for creating a hostile work environment does not merit more than one star for an intelligent but simple explanation of trauma’s effects on the brain and body (not all of which are factual, but I’m done grandstanding). There are so many better books recommended below, including Herman’s. Please give them a chance. This man doesn’t need your attention or your money.

3. Actionable and insightful work on alleviating trauma - Incredibly insightful look into the human condition and the processes involved in creating, sustaining, and finally liberating one’s self from trauma. If you or anyone you know has experienced trauma (we all know someone whether we KNOW of their abuse or not) this book will help you to understand the behaviors, thought processes, and affects of abused and neglected individuals. It will give you the insight to be more compassionate not only to others but how to extend that compassion to one’s self. A critical component of healing. I cannot recommend this book more.

4. Absolutely incredible and informative - I have been through a lot of trauma and I cannot express how much clarity this book has given me. I found myself rereading a lot of pages, sharing them, and interpreting how this fits my life so well. I will be buying the actual book. I’ve talked about it nonstop. It’s incredible to see another perspective and science behind trauma. Mental health is so stigmatized. Trauma has a truly incapacitating effect on my life. I’m in awe of how educational and magnifying this book is.

5. The Body Keeps The Score - I thought this book was an excellent compilation of studies, experiences, and life stories. Different types of therapy work for different people. We’re not a “one type fits all” culture. The very nature of humanity is that we’re all different. We will all grow, learn, and change through different processes.

6. Horrifying, yet revelatory - This book makes it easier to understand how scientists created the atomic bomb. To believe a mother that lost two children in a car accident that was her fault should just put it behind her; to believe a -year old with a solution for / suicide he witnessed is insightful; to assert that a patient would mend better if they weren’t receiving disability pay they earned, all simply add up to one thing: you should spend more time with lab animals than humans.

7. Such a wealth of information! - I love this book. As a person of a very traumatic childhood. Abuse from dad, mom, grandparents on both sides, other family members and their friends. No where safe to run. Although a functioning person of society in my mid s I still live in a cage with my mind. I’ve been to a lot of counselors w/ small amounts of progress and have felt discouraged. After reading this book, it has given me lots of understanding of why I didn’t benefit much from traditional counseling. I’m very hopeful for the future! I’ve already began the process and see a lot of hopeful progress and look forward to living a life of freedom and being who I was created to be! Thank you Dr Bessel van der Kolk for caring enough to do what you do and for writing this book!

8. Truly scientific approach to mental health extremely informative - Thank you so much for your honest perspective Dr Vander Kolk! What a wonderfully informative explanation of your life’s work with Trauma. My wife and I are already benefiting she has had debilitating chronic health problems from family trauma but we see a light of hope.

9. Incredibly Informative - I can’t explain how this book tied so many things together. The neuroscience behind the theory. I can’t say that I am over the things that happened in my past. I can say that I don’t feel as isolated and I have a greater understanding of who I am and how i developed into the person I am today.

10. Incredible - I was assigned to read this book by my therapist. When I first started reading it I just felt like it wasn't for me, and I wasn't very interested at all. But I pushed through that and as I kept reading I found myself loving this book. I understand so much about myself and i this book was a great blessing. I now am doing yoga, and controlling my anxiety more. It's amazing!

11. The best book on trauma, for professionals and patients. Explains, and offers hope - I was abused throughout my childhood. I ended up a runaway in the late sixties, and at was assaulted for five days in the St. Louis youth facility.
Nothing matches this book for explaining me to me. With accessible and powerful language, anecdotes, and good science, van der Kolk makes the case for how trauma rewires us, and what we can do about it.
I have waited for this book my whole life.

1. Inspirational not motivational… what do you seek? - This book is not for everyone. Many who are looking for a motivational no nonsense self-help book would do better reading “Unf k Yourself.” It’s also very good, much shorter, and motivates you to action if you’re stuck in a rut. This book is far better however in my opinion. Those who give one or two stars find Peterson rambling and only touching on the point at the end of the chapter. This is of course true. However, that is why I find it among the best, if not the best, self-help book currently available. Rules of Life is not a motivational book. It is inspirational. Each chapter is not designed to explain the “rule” he posits in each chapter. Instead he talks around his thesis and lets you reach the conclusion on its own. It is done well, thematically, and with no shortage of insight. You will not relate to everything he says, but you will often find enough relatable to find a personal resonance to the message. Motivational self-help books are effective because you believe the author. Inspirational self-help books are effective because you believe yourself once you make the essential connection to the theme. This distinction cannot be understated. If you are one that tends to fall back into self-destructive habits, even after making massive successful changes to your life short-term - this book may be worth the read.

2. Great storyteller, speaker, and thinker! - This book was an amazing opportunity to look into the mind and work of Dr. Peterson who has been consulted by many organizations worldwide, as well as a profound clinical psychologist from what I’ve seen/been told. This book helps the reader to use ancient stories told, and shifts your perspective on those stories to point out the moral or the physiological impacts that may have been embed in the media and otherwise overlooked.

3. Wow - I'm at a loss of words to describe the awesomeness of this book. Extremely deep and complicated ideas throughout yet Jordan Peterson (the author) explains them in a graceful and simple manner. Not a book for the faint of heart or those inflexible to change. Thank you Jordan for sharing your reflections and rules through your book the world is closer to Heaven thanks to it.

4. A Familiar Face - There aren’t even enough words to express the beneficial factors this book illustrates. I will be reading this book to the day i die for it gives no excuses when i fall back on negative outlooks, their is always a way out and for better reason. It takes a lot to know this knowledge and not be better, for not being better would insight a neglect of consciousness. Reading this a second time will only solidify and expand the understanding of its material. The thrill of its revealing ability to concepts of common relatability is unmatched. I will be chewing on this for a very long time.

5. Read it - It’s worth the time and effort. So darn interesting. At times it was a little heady for this mere mortal, but push on because it all becomes clear by the time the chapter is done: The author is amazingly honest and he offers such good advice. He doesn’t try to please everyone; he speaks his truth with passion gleamed from hard experience. No matter if you agree or disagree with him, his points of view, and the instructions for a better more meaningful life, can’t/shouldn’t be ignored. Read it.

6. Good read - Jordan Peterson is a conservative intellectual- his voice and perspective must be heard. Not a conservative myself- I found the book interesting. The book is essentially advice for life to young people; something much deeper than what your High School teacher told you but with a conservative twist. Of course, as a conservative he seeks to establish rules and structures for people to follow- that makes sense from the conservative point of view. Some of his ideas seem little outdated/strange to me- chaos being feminine and order and culture masculine.

7. Incredible Book! - An incredible book that can be applied no matter who you are and where you are. Dr. Peterson is blunt and to the point; he doesn’t beat around the bush. This book broke down many toxic ideologies I had and helped me establish better ones. A must read if you’re open and willing to grow.

8. Truly enlightening. - I have not read many self help books but so far this one has truly resonated with me. It has changed my state of mind and how I move through my life. I do not agree with everything Jordan Peterson says but there is no doubting his knowledge and expertise in psychology and philosophy. Thank you for putting so much effort into this book.
2021-03-01
9. Thoughtprovoking and Truth-Revealing - This is a thoughtprovoking and truth-revealing read. Dr. Peterson is able to formulate thoughts in a manner that makes them understandable and digestable, while not letting you off easy either. Some of the things talked about are those things you already know, consciously or subcosciously, and finally are able to read them and make sense of them, as he himself acknowledges at the end: “I hope [this book] revealed things you knew that you did not know you knew.” I had multiple occations reading Rules For Life where I had to laugh to myself at the brilliance of Peterson’s ability to communicate thougthts and concepts I had previously tried to make sense of myself, and now finally read them, black on white, as clear as day. This book introduced me to new things as well. One of those is the Russian novelist and thinker Dostoevsky, as well as others, who Peterson discusses at some length, and with profound admiration. I will pick up my first Dostoevsky because of Peterson and this very book. Thank You for encouraging me to seek truth, to not lie, to stand strongly and take responsibilty for my life. Thank You also for inspiring me to read more.

10. Really great! - My life has been kind of falling apart with COVID going around so I decided to pick up this book to get some guidance. I’ve been applying the rules as I read and I feel in control again! If anything, get the audiobook for free on audible and listen to the man talk. His voice is something special!

11. Mature Enough to Filter - I really enjoyed this book and all of its factually based theories on behavior, however I found myself struggling and page flipping past most of the heavy biblical references mid-way into the book. I am not religious myself but I’m capable of listening and appreciating the words of those who are; it just became a little too saturated for my attention. If you’re open minded and mature enough to filter the biblical aspects then this is a wonderful read.

12. Influential! - This book gives you an alternative perspective, a plan and hope. I enjoyed this book for many reasons, all of which gave me hope and a new ideology. If you enjoy personal development and growth within yourself and your relationships this book can certainly offer someone new. Jordan said it best it best in his book “listen ( or read in this case ) as if the other person knows something you don’t, because chances are they do know something you don’t “. I hope everyone enjoys this book as much as I did.

1. A Permanent Place on My Bookshelf - It’s hard to believe that after nearly a decade of being a psychotherapist this is my first time reading this book. And this is a book that I will not only personally read year-over-year however, one that I will encourage nearly all of my clients to read. For me, there was never a question about if there was value in my life, there was however, a question of how to go about finding that value. This book, its explanations and through Viktor’s experiences one can easily come to the conclusion about what needs to be done to find value in life and in the present moment. Please, pick up this book and read it. For all that you know, this book may literally help change your life.

2. Worthwhile read, but nothing you won’t find elsewhere - If you have read any self help literature you will find nothing new in this book. The book is interesting looking at it as the source of a lot of modern self help thinking. His description of his time in the concentration camps was a bit clinically detached. I appreciated this because I was not in a place to process a more emotional approach. The second half of the book was a dry discourse on his personal field of Logotherapy. I didn’t find it very approachable. I think it was a missed opportunity. I’m glad I read the book. It is a interesting snapshot of history.

3. Wonderful Surprise - I had heard that this was one of the most influential books ever written, so I bought it. But I put it aside for a long time, fearing the subject matter would simply be too dark and difficult to get through. I finally decided to commit to the experience, and I'm so glad I did! There was meaning and purpose behind every description of Dr. Frankl's experiences, which made it easier to stay in the story. And the wealth of wisdom, through hope, optimism, and determination, was life-changing. What a gift this man was, and still is, to everyone within reach of his books! I'm so glad I took this journey. I carry it with me as I step more confidently into my own search for meaning!

4. Why did I wait so long to read this book? - I had heard about this book from speakers and other authors many times but never got around to purchasing and reading the book until now. I wish I had read this book years ago. Don't skip the part where he talks about therapy. There is a lot of great advice that we can apply to our lives from that section of the book.

5. THE only book you will ever need for "life" - When I see all the psychology books for self help that how to help people deal with life's problems, I always think of this book. This is not just a story of a Man interred at a concentration camp during the Holocaust and stories of what occurred while he was there. It's much more. I read it years go in college in my freshman philosophy course and I got It. My year old son went through a terrible drug problem and I handed him this book. He read it in one night bs it turned his life around. Don't be blind. This is essential to your life's guiding principles.

1. She comes first - I have read the e-book . Then bought the hardback book completely read it marked pages highlighted thanks. Read it completely. Then went back and re-read all the things I highlighted in Pages I folded over and Marked .This is absolutely the best book I ever picked up I learned so much from it. It is truly what it says “ if she comes first she will come forever”.

2. A Must Read For Both Men And Women - I haven't completed many books in my life maybe because I'm not much of a reader. I began reading this book because honestly I enjoy giving oral sex, my wife coached me to help me be better at the act itself. This book takes it to another level, it perfects the art and breaks it down. It was a dope read for me, I'll highly recommend it for this interested in being more then just penetration to their spouse.
2016-05-17
3. Full of useless information, cheesy puns and information from more informative books - In all fairness this book has some good material but not anything new. The entire part of the book just hammers in that oral sex is good, yes we get it, move on to something useful. The stuff you'd want to read or know about is scattered between quips that a middle schooler would find immature, and information that isn't needed. There is a part where the author spends several pages explaining that certain sexual positions are impractical or uncomfortable... He mentions that there are better alternatives to ing then spends pages talking about ing and why it's not so great without giving you an alternative. Bottom line, this book could have been much much shorter but the author did his best to cram it full of cringeworthy lines to make it seem longer and perhaps more legitimate. Pick one of the many books he uses as references and quotes from

4. Fanstatic! - I struggle as the author says he struggles with sexual dysfunction, this book helped me to forget that and satisfy the love of my life! I would absolutely recommend this to every man, especially those who feel inadequate my cultural definitions of what it takes to be great in bed! Practice the mentality and techniques that are contained in this book and there will be greater mutual satisfaction and enjoyment!

1. Jack of all Trades - The saying a “jack of all trades is a master of none,” is regularly used out of context. The full saying is a “jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” This book gets to the heart of that concept. More specifically, David Epstein goes on an exploration into the merits and failings of specialists and generalists alike. To the surprise of many, the “successful” are often people who weave their way to the final expression of their potential. They go about picking up skills and experiences along the way that congeal into an alchemy of ability, insight, and drive. Conversely, we learn about the dangers of specialization. Specifically, the hyper silos we create that result in tunnel vision and the concurrent systemic issues. Epstein dismantles the idea of tiger parenting and pathways to expertise from the first page. He shows how flexibility and range in experiences lead to greater potential for success. Using a wide ranging collection of anecdotal stories, study based findings, and personal reflections we get an argument for perhaps the most important perspective shift for education in decades.

2. Educational & Interesting - This was a very well written book. The ideas and opinions were backed by facts or research. The first half is super interesting, keeps your attention well. The last few chapters can be hard to follow with all the tech and engineering stuff. Again, I really enjoyed it and I’m glad I read it.

3. Never made a point - Maybe the most boring book I’ve ever attempted to read. Took forever for the author to try to get to a point which frankly never arrived. I tried but I had to bail on the book. Goes to show you that heavily promoted books aren’t always good. That just spend more on marketing prior to launch.

1. Gain a better understanding to “What happened to you?” - I was recommended this book by my therapist while I was going through my postpartum depression stage.
Parenting opens up and brings to the surface all of the childhood trauma and generational trauma that you hadn’t yet resolved.
This book then helps you gain an understanding of “What happened to you?” Hence the title.
It has made me think, made me open up my eyes and has reminded me to go back to forgiving myself and then forgiving others.
I hope this books helps others as it has continued to help me.

2. Deep dive into understanding self & others - I loved every word in this book! It is so eye & soul- opening. The reader is able to self- reflect while also thinking of those close to them in a more loving and compassionate manner. It gives hope for the future generations that healing as a individual & nation can happen - if we first recognize the truths of what happened to us to then we can begin to understand what type & order of healing we need. This book is informational, explorative & revolutionary!

3. Thank You Oprah and Dr. Perry…. - I know they will probably never read this…. But this book has changed my life in ways unimaginable. I recommend this book to everyone I know that has gone though something because it has helped me to break though so much emotional trauma that I have gone through in my life. It helped me to organize why I do what I do and how I react and why I react to things the way I do. It has helped me to break the generational trauma of my life and now that I am expecting a little one, it has opened my eyes and my heart to view the future in a more positive way. I cannot thank them enough. It truly has changed my life for the better.

4. A Remarkable Culmination of Memory-Making and Collaboration - The personal and professional trajectories of Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Bruce Perry have crossed and run parallel long enough to culminate in this manifestation of wisdom informed by memories of research, stress, loss, grief, humility, resiliency, and practice. The application of this wisdom not only addresses how individuals resolve their memories of suffering, but how families, communities, nations, and even the human species may reach their potentials.

5. Ahmazing - What a remarkable and insightful read. I was fascinated by the way Dr Perry broke down the brain and it’s functions. I was truly at awe! The way you two wrote ethics book was just beautiful. I felt like you both were sitting along side me the entire read having a conversation and allowing me to par take in it. Thank you deeply for this gift to allow us to begin and understand trauma and how deeply connected to our brains. I was definitely touched, moved and inspired by many of the stories including Oprah’s. Thank you O as always for your authenticity and vulnerability. You have not only guided and mentored me from afar, but you have loved me as well. Namaste, Dinorah

1. Mindset is behind strategies and all the tricks - I learned a lot of strategies to have good habits or to be successful, but behind all the strategies and tricks, it is mindset that really influences our behavior. I gave a name to my fixed mindset persona. I’m going to try to work on my fixed mindset personal to see where we can go.

2. Life Changing - I found this book thanks to Tom Bilyeu and Impact Theory. He spoke so highly of it and how life changing the concepts of this book are and I am now a believer. I highly recommend this book to anyone in leadership like myself. Anyone looking to just improver there overall outlook in life. Thank you Dr. Dweck.

3. Life changing - I've heard a little about both mindsets before. Never actually knowing the difference til I read this book. It was extremely helping and knowing the difference. Throughout the book I could remember both times when I reacted with one mindset or the other. Now that I know my triggers of the fix mindset. I can take a moment and go over how to grow into the growth mindset

4. Great content, terrible writer - Ms. Dweck happily admits at the outset that she chose a questionable writing style. She's not kidding. This book would benefit from some heavy editing. The information and insight she imparts is profoundly useful and important. I just couldn't get past the impulse to think she's pulling a lot of her anecdotes out of her imagination because she staunchly refuses to provide citations. She also often speaks of individuals who are researchers or teachers etc. but can't be bothered to say where they're from or how they received their bona fides. Ultimately for me this book is very useful but I find I'm forcing myself to accept that the research she cites is real because she offers no evidence.

5. Change my life. - I was always a pessimist, I thought thinking of the bad will help me "prevent or be prepared for the worse" this book completely changed way of thinking for the better, taught me to embrace challenge and see failure as an opportunity to learn and grow. I never review anything but this deserves nothing but praise.

6. Mindset - Not the type of person who is into selfhelp books, but this was recommended by my daughters th grade school counselor. WOW, totally great read!! Learned so much and just ordered the brainology program to work with her. Cant wait! This is a great read for everyone and that comes from this fixed minded person. Life changing for the whole family.

7. Brilliant! - I LOVE the idea of having a growth mindset. Revolutionary. Reading this book was like turning a light switch on. We aren't the sum of our intelligence and talent, these are just the starting points. Through dedication and hard work we are always growing, learning, and evolving. Fixed mindset: This is just how I am Growth mindset: I can learn and grow and become anything I want. Great stuff!

8. One of the very Best!! - This book is one of the very best I have read. Truly influential and reflective of one’s life. You probably would relate to your own circumstances and situations in each of these chapters. Some of the attempts made at humor probably needs work, but believe me you are not going to read this for humor - Painful things people go through are nothing to laugh about anyway. The book was so engrossing and the first time I read, I read this book over a weekend. I would recommend to all Parents, Teachers and Coaches to have this book as a reference manual.
2015-09-30
9. Geared for parents, teachers and kids - While I completely endorse Dweck's thesis on continual learning as a mindset, this book is aimed squarely at families. As a single professional without kids, I found myself skipping chunks of this book when the supporting evidence focused on kids or school. If you are a parent, teenager or teacher, this book is for you. If you are like myself, less so.

10. Love this book!! - This book is a must read for ever person looking to have more insight into how we can think as a parent, coach, teacher, boss, spouse, etc.. I have learned many things from reading this and plan to continually focus on the growth mindset in rearing my two young boys. There is so much value in these pages and I truly appreciate learning the tools needed to shift my way of thinking. Thank you!!

11. Grow and grow rich - Amazing how changing just a few different habits in how I think changes the entire trajectory of my life. It's Robert Frost's two paths come to life through research..."...less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." And indeed it does. This is one of the most enjoyable, thought-provoking books I've read in ages. Every page is filled with me, both fixed and growth. I think you'll find yourself in these pages as well. Good luck in shaking hands with your finest self if you follow the advice. Thank you Dr. Dweck.

12. Narrator's dramatic rendering drops a star - A high impact book that has changed the way i approach all challenges and greatly influenced how i parent my children, especially during times of adversity. The narrator's voice is comically over-dramatic and (likely) self aggrandizing Were it not for the strain required to focus on the critical messages of this important book thru the hamming of the reader, I would give it stars.

13. Life changing - The beauty of this book is in its simplicity. The importance for our happiness, success and that of our kids can not be underestimated. A hugely influential book based on thorough research. Every parent, teacher and coach should read this and everybody interested in self improvement as well!

1. One of the most important political books of our time - This book is one of the most insightful political books in recent times. Rather than being a polemic against one side of the political aisle, Jonathan Haidt takes insights from evolutionary biology, moral philosophy, and social science research and crafts together a fascinating exploration of why people have the political and religious beliefs that they do. Haidt argues that while we would like to think that our responses to moral questions are controlled by reason, our innate instincts play a much larger role. Haidt uses the metaphor of reason being a very small rider on the very large elephant of innate moral judgments - and it's the elephant that more moves the rider more than the other way around. He then moves into a discussion of a six-axis system of moral reasoning, based not just on Western values, but universal moral principles. Haidt weaves together Western ethics from Bentham, Kant and Mill with a deeper appreciation for other moral values not always present in conventional Western moral reasoning, such as respect for authority and sanctity. What he finds is that there's a much broader universe of moral principals than just the ones that Western minds commonly think of. The most controversial part of this book is when Haidt applies his research to modern politics. While Haidt self-identifies as a liberal, he has some rather pointed criticisms of modern liberalism. But don't confuse this book for yet another political polemic - Haidt's arguments aren't about what side is right or wrong, but recoginizing that different political factions have very different considerations in their moral reasoning. Liberals strongly identify with two moral axes and very little with the other four - while conservatives identify equally with all six. Despite being a liberal himself, Haidt finds that conservatives have a much easier time understanding liberals than the other way around. Haidt's argument is extremely well-constructed, and his prose is clear. Liberals may have a tough time swallowing his political argument, but Haidt sets up his principles so clearly and lays out his intellectual groundwork in advance. He clearly knows he's making a tough sell, but by the end of the book the reader has a better sense of what motivates both sides of the political aisle. That's why this book is so important. In a time when the partisan divide seems an unbridgeable gap and political polemics fill the bookshelves, there's never been a better time for a book designed to try and understand what both sides have in common. This book isn't designed to reinforce one's political beliefs, it's about getting to know how each side thinks and why. If ever there were a time for such a book, it's now.

1. A slow burner with life-changing insights and perspectives - To be completely honest, I cannot expect every person to gather the motivation to read through this quite lengthy book. However, if one is determined to do so they will be so grateful for the journey that are partaking on. The lessons you will learn from topics such decision making, narrow- & broad-framing, biases, and more will make you significantly more aware and keen to how people operate and think in the world we live in. This applies to strangers, family, friends, colleagues, and even yourself. This is not a book for everyone, but if you find it even a little intriguing then go for it!

2. Insightful and Applicable - I got to learn more about how the mind works, and where we become susceptible to psychological bias. I’m the decision-maker for my company. I found the lessons learned very applicable to decisions I’m routinely confronted with. I especially appreciated learning more about the effects of framing, anchoring, and presenting losses versus gains. As the author says in the final pages of the conclusion, I’m not sure if I’m any better now at avoiding the errors myself, but it’s easier for me to spot as an observer!

3. Fantastic book, what's with the notes? - Great book, really enjoying it. Trying. To figure out what the deal is with the notes. They seem to be about particular parts of the book with some extra detail provided but there are not footnotes nor links to get to them from the text in the ebook. Kind of annoying

4. English Prof - Not a native English speaker. The book is written in a very basic English. Kahneman should have hired a good translator to make it readable. There are thousands books that someone should read first before touching on this ABC.
What for this guy got a Noble prize? Kahneman doesn't know the answer either.

5. A Fascinating and Enlightening Read! - I took my time reading through each chapter, trying to understand the implications of his research. Although the matierial was tough to get through at times, what I learned about the limits and nature of the human mind was worth every penny. There are important lessons in this book for anyone who wants to live their life with a sharp sense of self-awareness.

6. word search and index poor - the book is great. the problem and reason for the two star is either the publisher or iBooks have a problem. there are nopage numbers in the index, nor does clicking on the word in the index take you anywhere. double clicking brigs up dictionary. search engine very selective, couldn't find amygdala, nor golf

7. Applicable to business and life - / I think. I disagree that this book is difficult to understand. I think it is made really easy given his many, many examples. I'm an Entreprenuer and I think this book applies really well to marketing, sales, and communications with consumers or partners. But you need to apply the logic yourself and adapt it to your environment the author won't make that connection for you. The economist had an article about advertising and how this book has changed ads. But the author will not consult for them says the article. I respect that. Again, this does help business skills if you apply it. Read the sample and you will know if you want more.

8. Excellent description of the intricacies of the Mind - The beginning of this book will seem very familiar, since we have all heard about the "two brains", left brain, right brain, intuitive and rational thought. However in this great book, amazingly deep yet very readable, Daniel Kahneman takes us on a gradual but unequivocal road to understand how these two systems ( which he calls System and System ) work together in our mind. And it is truly surprising that through the explanation of decade long psychological research by a number of important scientists, we come to understand that the mechanism of the mind can be studied scientifically, and that we are able to understand how all of this research affects us in our everyday life and in all of our social interactions and ultimately in the road that we take as human beings.

9. Must read to understand human behaviour - This book explains through many interesting experiments how the human brain processes information and makes decissions. A few of the times the information is processed through our rarional side and thus rational decisions are made, but most of the time the information available is processed through our intuitive system and here decisions are made without any quality control. A great explanation on why we often make stupid decisions!
2012-09-15
10. Superb! - Professor Kahneman has provided us with an intellectual memoir of a life-long study, along with his colleague the late Amos Tversky, of cognitive outcomes. The simple shorthand: most people are not rational decisionmakers. For many years I have used their findings in my profession, with outcomes they predicted, so I find Kahneman's book a capstone of what he (and Tversky) understands so well...we're rarely rational decisionmakers in matters that usually matter so much. Dr C.

11. Overpriced if your already - think in the ideal ways and furthermore are able to assess that in your life at any given time. So I think it's like how there's a melody to everything and someone might buy this book trying to find the harmony but the ones who already hear it and even found a way to sing along will see that's it's the chords we naturally are aware of and it's a melody we can hear our minds play along to everything. But the ones who hear this book and chorus but fail to find notes that match or clash will end up tortured by song when they fail to find a way to sing along.

12. My System Was Exhausted After Reading This Book - This is a fascinating and thought-provoking book. Will make you think about thinking. After reading this book, my System is exhausted and all my System wants to do is to look for a dime on a copier to place a bet on a gamble (you have to read the book to understand).
2012-02-19
13. Bears reading slow and carefully … - There is a lot of room to disagree, or argue with the book or yourself about ideas
put forth in "Thinking; Fast and Slow". The ideas presented are put forth in a very
gentle way non-rhetorical, and it helps because there is a lot here to absorb that a
reader could miss or go by. There is a lot to consider and fine nuance in the words
as well. While not jammed down your throat, or so dry as to be unpalatable, "Thinking"
treads an elegant careful and respectful path as it reveals what has been studied
about the way brains work in an almost holographic way that helps to reinforce
the ideas, and also find fine distinctions. As I read this book I could not help but think of a million ways we do thing inefficiently
because our of virtual stone age model of the inside of our heads. It's really scary as
a matter of fact just how we have built up these colossal scaffolds of habitual reality
that we never question or even look at. This is one book that is not like all the rest, and there are a lot of them out there too,
many good, some bad, some just repeat the same things in all the others. This book
felt precisely put together to inform the reader in the best way by an expert in his field. Excellent, /.

1. For Psychologists - The book has a variety of stories told by the author can be relatable to some degree for some. There is biological explanations of dopamine with great analogy for the reader to follow along. I wish there other forms of addiction discussed in this book that is more abstract such as thoughts or a person.

2. Great life lessons told with touching personal stories - Having read a few “self-help” books, I can confidently say this book is of a different class. Although it does give you advice and techniques to use in day-to-day lives, it never does it in a “just do it!” kinda way. More than that, I believe the book taught me to empathize better with people who suffer from compulsive overconsumption and generally with all of us flawed human beings.
An informative and concise book I can recommend everyone.

1. Interesting but Lacking - Somewhat surprised by the content and the style of writing. Comes across as a text book or reading material for academia. Not sure it’s applicable to business or corporate leadership. It’s a stretch to make that connection …. Found a few nuggets. Definitely not what I expected for sure.

2. If you have kids, please read this one. - Might be the most helpful book I have ever read- and I’ve read a lot. I keep referring back to her named feelings for the remedies. If I’d learned how to properly deal with my feelings like this before now (I’m ) I know my relationships would have been better and maybe I wouldn’t be alone. Until now the only tools I had were to stuff the emotions down (like Spock) or run away. Thank God for you, Brene.

3. Goosebumps - Having read most all of Berene’s work leading up to this one, it’s incredible to see how (just like us), her learnings and assumptions twist and turn and grow and develop and blossom into something beautiful over all this time. Atlas of the Heart puts into words what we feel and know (or have no idea we know) in such a way that you go back and read one of her passages again and again and think, “WOW- if that isn’t hitting the nail dead on the head”…… Brene Brown, thank you.

4. Huge disappointment! - This book is a reference of emotions and all emotions as Brene Brown takes you on the journey of defining all . It’s based on research and I give her a lot of accolades for the research completed to develop this book however, data is not a real life human being and so it is not going to be a one size fits all type of life. Extremely disappointed!

1. Great book opening important discussions - As a division athlete that struggled upon coming to college I related to a lot of the struggles Maddy went through. In sports, specifically women’s sports, the component of mental health is not discussed enough. I have struggled and I’ve seen others struggle with body image, eating, burnout, and much more. However, this isn’t a topic that is welcomed or discussed. If you are struggling interiorly you are not suppose to show it exteriorly. When we injury our leg we take time off, but when we are hurting interiorly there is no time to recover because in athletics lacking mental health is seen as a lack of mental toughness. This needs to change. Maddy’s story represents so much that we need to discuss and change in our society and in sports. It’s an important discussion and this book does an awesome job at opening dialogue. Recommending to many of my fellow athletes.

2. what made maddy run - Thank you for writing this important book. I highly recomment this book to young adults, parents, grandparents and teachers. It was especially interresting to learn about the affects of the technology and persona that is adopted as real by the users and readers alike. This book gave insight into the unknown personal battles that humans fight. Maddy looked for ways to escape her personal torture but her private agony remained just that: private. Her parents are brave. Five stars.
2017-09-11
3. Pass on this one - The topic while very sad is very narrow for a book this long. What starts out as interesting becomes unending as you slog through the book. Also the writer spent far too much time writing about herself. Really? I bought this book to learn about Maddy. If I wanted to learn about the author I would have gotten her biography. When the story finally ended I found myself very depressed. I would not recommend this book to anyone. Not do I believe any author can write a memoir about someone they never met.
2017-08-31
4. Maddie should have been the main focus on this book, not about the authors life - This book was very poorly written. It's main focus was on the author and her life. Not Maddison's. Which is a dishonor to her. I wanted to read all about Madison, not the author, and her life. I could have read the internet and her social media and gleaned more about her beautiful life then what this author wrote. May her beautiful soul Rest In Peace. And may you not write about another persons death, this book should have been all about Maddie, not the author.

1. Must read book! - This book really opened my mind to something I’ve never thought of. I’ve always had a fear of dying, and the moment I finished this book I felt like this sense of fear vanished instantly. I’m so extremely grateful for my friend who recommended this book for me. It was meant to be.

2. Great read! - I’m a logical yet spiritually inclined person. Ever since I was a child I would have many dreams that would come to life. As I grew older I developed physic abilities, not only dreaming but seeing and hearing people that have passed or were about to pass. I have kids of my own who are developing the same physic abilities and reading this book helped me believe I’m not crazy, we are not crazy. Great knowledge and perspective acquired. Thank you!

3. “Came at the right time!” - I really have no idea how this book and I crossed paths. I’ve always been spiritual and have come to knowledge of some topics covered in this book through analytical and logical reasoning and through near death experiences. To sustain is difficult and I regressed back to my old depressed, I’m-motivated self. I was desperate and this book somehow was presented to me while surfing the innternet and not about anything related to this book! It had helped me to go k on living and to improving.”

4. Excellent and informative - I found that this coincides with my own religious beliefs and thoughts about what happens after we leave one life. The energy of the soul needs to be freed and go somewhere. This is an excellent book to read even if you’re a skeptic. There’s more to our world than we think, more to our own mindfulness.

5. Different - I read this book in an open minded acceleration to learn new facts of life. The theory is super and almost surreal to my young minded understanding. Thanks be to the Lord and all that’s made possible for his children. I’m going to go further with information about Osiris and the aspect of Egyptian knowledge. To be consciously intelligent and much farther for my internals to expand into something seen in low percentage for higher yields of being smart for natural gain.

6. Many Lives, Many Masters - Having being touched by anxiety my whole life- I myself and multiple family members- this book helped me on so many levels. I have only recently discovered that I am a deeply spiritual person. It has come in waves for me over the last year a half. This book made me realize that I have been given a gift, I am conscious- I am aware of what I need to do as a person on earth to advance my journey towards spiritual happiness. Reading Many Lives, Many Masters has truly given me hope!

7. Simply wonderful! - For as long as I can remember, I have "known" things for no reason that I have been able to explain. I have an unbelievable connection to my best friend to which neither of us can explain. I have always strongly been aware that everything in my life happens for a reason and that there is most definitely a lesson associated with the experience. This book confirms what I have always known to be true. It's a beautiful book written with the utmost respect for both the living and the dead. If you are looking for confirmation or simply for possible answers, this is the book to read.

8. Fun topic with a scientific approach - I enjoyed this book. It was my first venture into the subject of past life regression. Although very interesting, the book is fairly vague and mainly focused on one patient. I would recommend for anyone who is new to the subject matter but will probably be too light for a more knowledgable part life readers.

9. Lessons - I have to thanks to Dr. Brian Weiss for such a good book. As he has learned so many lessons of life, I had to learn in a scary way I should say. Like Catherine I have been floating on a space twice in my life, I have seen the light and came back not knowing what was happenning to me, I heard voices like Dr. Weiss saying is not time yet you have to go back and learn, pay attention so after those incidents my life have changed I see things different something so simple like a plant or a bird with a different eyes to enjoy the beauty of nature , to see people with compassion and learn from them, every day I beleive we learn a lesson is up to us to retain it and put it to practice I have learned to meditate more and be able to connect with the Masters like Dr. said,I never believed that they were with us at all times; that we all have angels and higher energies that surround us all we have to do is call them for help and ask question and we will receive the answer in one way or another, now I understand that we make choices in our life that some times are wrong but we have to learn from it I also believe that what goes around comes around every act have a consecuence and this is the way we grow.
We have the ability to heal ourselfs , we were created to live forever we just have to learn how to connect with our interior self and the Masters and They will do the rest.
I really enjoyed this book becouse I am sure that all the people that have read it had an impact in their life; it has openned a window in many minds and hearts to beleived that we all had a past life and there is always a good reazon why we feel in a specific way, and maybe to find help to go to a doctor, a medium, psychiatry, a psychic someone that could help to understand, someone on a higher level. Thank you Dr. Weiss for sharing your experiences with your patients with all of us the people that always are on the search of the unexplicable phenomenon of life. I will keep reading your next eddition Many souls, Many lifes and congratulations for all your awards and all the lessons learned Dr Weiss!.

10. Second time around - I read this book so many years ago, in my twenties. I was suffering from panic attacks too but not many books were out there at the time. It really helped then, and as I re- read it well into my forties I devoured it from such a different perspective. I no longer let anxiety be my story line and feel my intuition guides me in every corner of my life. This book is a treasure trove of conformation for me and I'm sure any one who reads it. I am going to buy one for my daughter who is a psychology major, that is if she hasn't already read it.

1. An honest review - Insightful on subjects like ego, everyday family drama (no real trauma) and enmeshment. Overall, there’s nothing I found in this book to be a revelation. Much of it has been written about time & again. The author seems to go-on about herself, especially in the beginning. She all but credits herself for inventing holistic therapy, which is weird, because it has been around for quite some time. The existence of Instagram, is the new element here. The ability to be incredibly public about one’s personal journey, should one choose to do so. “The work” is generally addressing your inner child through journaling. I would definitely go down that path with a therapist as well. In real life. Not just a book. I think the book will be helpful to anyone who decides to.
So glad they updated with a new narrator before I finished the audiobook. The original narrator often took an incredibly pitiful & defeated tone, which was unbearably cring-ey. I found the last chapters to be most uplifting.

2. Such an important read - I’ve studied the core themes in this book separately, but having someone stitch them together into a comprehensive process alongside their own story is so, so helpful and compelling. After reading this book I can visualize my own steps to self-healing much more clearly. I appreciate and recommend this book.

1. Perfect for Introverts - Before reading this book I knew that I was an introverted person but this book validated so much for me. It was encouraging to read something very relatable and even give alternative ideas to handle situations that can be overly stimulating socially. I will definitely continue to use this book to help remind me that its ok.
2022-01-06
2. Enormously insightful - I bought this book to better equip me to fully appreciate and most effectively deploy some amazingly talented introverts who work for me in my small business. I now legitimately look at them as though I’ve just discovered that they have superpowers. I also greatly appreciate the many parts of the book that make a compelling case that extroverts need to—at least under some circumstances—learn to borrow a page or two from the introverts’ playbook.

3. Explanation for me - This book really brought back so many memories from my childhood. Adult me now has a better perspective on child me. I realize now that I’ve been a pseudo extrovert for much of my life and am only my real self when alone or with a few close friends. Of course, I’ve always had this sense, but now the feelings are more fleshed out. I found myself in so much of this book and will have to reread it and probably take some notes for retention.

4. Quiet - This book spoke to me. I saw myself in everything the author described and every example she gave as the personality of an introvert. So happy to finally see that what has been described by family, friends and bosses and co-workers as strange and weird is actually my normal and that makes me just fine and special. YaY Introverts!!

5. It was tiring. - It’s a good book, based on lots of research and its credibility is unquestionable. Yet, for me, it was a constant comparison between introverts and extroverts that got very tiring. At times I felt the point of the book was to see how good it is to be an introvert and how bad it is to be an extrovert. Although it boosted my confidence and I feel now I understand certain things that I do unconsciously, I really felt like i didn’t have to go through the entire book to get it. It got tiring and a bit boring after a couple of hours in.

6. Someone understands!!! - I loved this book mostly because I am an introvert myself. I had always been told I was too quiet, and that I should "come out of my shell". I was feeling pretty bad about myself, until I found this book and found that I am an introvert. I liked reading the stories of people who started out as quiet geeks and ended up starting big things like Apple and Rosa Parks. While I was reading, I thought, "wow, these people were just like me." It made me feel warm and fuzzy.

7. Could not put it down - I already knew I was an introvert and knew several of the unique research behind introvertedness, but this book still managed to captivate me and introduce me to a myriad of knowledge I had never heard. Not a day passes since I have read this that I don’t bring up this book in casual conversation with people; it has so many interesting facts about human behaviors!
2014-10-13
8. Fascinating exploration, for introverts and extroverts. - Incredibly deep and engaging book on introverts and why we experience the world as we do. I'd read tons on the subject over the years and was still blown away by the science, information and insights in "Quiet". If you have an introvert in your life but you aren't one yourself, this book will help you understand. Can't recommend this book enough.
2014-01-12
9. Thank You - I have always been an extrovert poser. Trying to be what I thought was the norm; bubbly, quick to speak, socially outgoing, and so on. All of these actions left me exhausted and withdrawn. This book has opened my eyes to the beauty us introverts bring to the world. I am grateful for the author and her work. I recommend this book to all, the talkers and the quiet folks.
2013-11-19
10. Enlightening - After reading this book, I understand myself and my family members so much better now. I have two children (one an extrovert and one an introvert) and now I feel I can really encourage them to be true to themselves and find their place in this world. Susan Cain gives so many real life examples, that it is easy to relate the studies and data to your own experiences. No matter what your personality type is, you will learn much from this book
2013-09-15
11. Quiet - Found this book to be informative and supported what I have always felt about myself as an introvert type personality. Some really good nuggets of wisdom from the Author. Will need to re-read some sections to fully grasp what the message was because it was lost in a lot of case studies. All said, it was a good read. Thanks so much! They labeled me a dreamer, but in my thoughts I feel the pulse of the Universe, discover the wonders of this World, and peace. Wonderful peace.
2013-07-30
12. Ok book - It is an intereting book with some science facts. I found it, however, boring in some chapters - the author goes on too much on repetitive stuff. I identified with the subject but it did not make much a difference to me. I only read it to the end because I am the persistent type - otherwise, I would probably have left - chapters unread.
2013-07-04
13. Recommended for Introverts, Extroverts, and Ambiverts - This book will help you understand and appreciate your personality more if you're an introvert and, if you're an extrovert, help you understand those you love and work with. I also found it helpful for understanding the different personalities of our children.
2013-05-22
14. Insightful and informative. - This book wasn't filled with facts and figures, but an honest in-depth account about society and how introverts are undervalued. This book helps bring awareness and tolerance to people who think that introverts aren't as good enough. It was written in a way that was easy to read, without scientific jargon.
2013-03-24
15. Must-Read - Susan Cain does an excellent job presenting the dynamic between the world's introverts and extroverts. As a a fellow introvert, I cannot help but relate to her anecdotes of social discomfort, yet this book goes well beyond an autobiography of her psychology. Cain presents scenarios and research from prospectives of the most gregarious extroverts, most reserved introverts, and numerous shades in between. What results is a guide on how to better interact with those around oneself: from when to staunchly hold to one's traits and when to put on different airs for the betterment of all involved. Everyone should read this book to develop a better understanding of his neighbors, friends, co-workers, and family. It is a shame that I am limited to only a five star review because Cain's work deserves much more than that.

16. Wonderful Read - This book was spot-on in regards to the types of difficulties and misconceptions that an introverted individual will face in our society. Great read for both introverts and extroverts looking to gain a deeper understanding on the importance of integrating these two spectrums of personality into one harmonious setting.

17. This one is from the heart - The influence of this book may only be truly felt years down the road. It may signal the beginning of a new conversation in American society about the meaning of personality. If that sounds too broad and general to imagine coming from one book, then suspend disbelief and imagine that such an outcome is not beyond each of the power of introverts. Susan Cain has not only carved out an immensely well articulated premise, and provided the research to catalyze it... She has channeled the collective yearning and unlived inner life of generations of introverts. We who exist at the corners of circles, due to inhabiting a sub-dominant set of preferences for engaging with the world.
My life, and my children's lives will be better because of her work.

18. Fantastic read - I've constantly felt bad about being introverted, just like others made me feel bad about myself. This book helped me understand my personality and who I am. Now I feel so much better about myself and what I can do without having to change to fill in a certain type of stereotype that's always been associated with success. Thank you, Susan Cain, for such a wonderful book.

19. One of the best most important books - Especially for introverted people, but hopefully for anyone who has an introverted person in his or her life, this is a treasure of a book. It shows how being quiet is valuable and normal, despite how our culture makes heroes of those who are dominant, charismatic and even loud. With scientific research and actual examples of everyday and historic introverts who made massive contributions, it's so validating for people who once thought they were somehow less valuable. There is much in this book for managers, managees, teachers, parents, students--anyone open to seeing the value of different personalities. It can be literally life-changing to many.

20. Worthwhile read - The author reviews some science behind the introverted personality type. She generally does a decent job of it for a non-scientist. However, as a scientist myself, one thing that had me bordering on an aneurysm was when she'd mix her science with anecdote, and in some instances, some counterproductive stereotypes and gross oversimplifications. Overall, a worthwhile read, with extensive references.

21. Informative - I love pop science books, and when I saw this one was about introverts, I knew I had to check it out. I can't tell you how many times I was told as a child "people would like you better if you just talked more." Quiet explains the science of why introverts are the way they are, how to make the most of personal and business relationships if you are an introvert, or if you deal with one. Susan Cain has an easy to read style, it reminds me of Mary Roach, though with a bit less humor. She uses personal stories and stories from her clients, and I appreciated the her references to scientific studies, which added validity to her observations. That said, you don't have to be a science buff to enjoy Quiet. I highly recommend it!

1. This is it. - A must for literally everyone. Profound thinking. This book helped me reimagine my relationship with my husband after becoming a mom and gave me tools to better articulate my thoughts, feelings and emotions about my present state as well as the past circumstances that lead me to this place.

2. Slowish start, with an incredibly profound nd half! - My wife and I (yrs married) have been reading this book gether at night over several weeks now (little bits at a time). Initially it was not the most energizing read, but because it’d come so highly recommended we kept at it; thankfully we did cuz at a certain point, it just bcomes legit powerful. Our goal was just to read like to minutes or so at a time to unwind. But, as we got deeper into it our sessions kept goin’ longer and longer, sometimes a full chapter or two at a time. It connects and Esther’s examples…just hit. Especially the last few chapters; they’re def the payoff you’ve been promised from anyone who’s recommended this book. It is well worth the read. A new go-to recommendation for peeps interested in sexuality and relationships.

3. This book has definitely set the captives free !!!! - I thank God for Esther Perel. This book has legitimately revolutionized the way we view sex and relationships. It emphasizes albeit ever so subtly yet assertively that we must be whole and healed first. Most of the relationship issues we face stem not from other people or circumstances but from our own unhealed traumas and identity issues. Love this book!!!!!

4. Decent book. - After reading this book it opened up a lot of sore parts in my marriage. After following though with a few of the ideas and suggestions my wife has said she feels closer than ever, even though the truth from the book still makes me feel doubtful. My suggestion, read with some caution. It's a powerful and well referenced book with some ideas that you may or may not want to consider as a truths in your marriage.

5. Tantra explained through societies sexual wanes - I just went to my first tantra workshop last night. This book has allowed me to read in context the questions and answers I've been seeking. I felt like I had forgotten how great a lover I am. Perel made me think. And last night I remembered that I have all the tools to be a greater lover still. Her insight brought out ideas I hadn't ever thought of. Must read. Must.

6. Thought provoking - Started reading this book on my iPhone and could not put it down!!! Recently divorced, I could have used this amazing collection of carefully assembled cases and practical exercises for couples. I particularly like the approach to all comers not just heterosexual. My only wish is that I had read it before I got married years ago.

1. Great ideas, poor writing - While the concepts in this book are sound, the writing in this book is extremely poor. Pedantic allusions and judgmental ramblings abound. The core concept of the "flow" state, which should be stated at the outset, is not introduced until several chapters in; most chapters that follow are redundant and verbose rehashings of this concept. The author's obsession with subjective happiness overshadows the implications of "flow" for education and professional-level skill development and performance. For a book that has been hailed as so revolutionary, it was quite a disappointing read.

1. Handles human relationships with grace and dignity - What a wonderfully written, beautifully eye opening read. This book explores the alternatives to the once idealized, perfect scenarios of marriage, affair, divorce, and ever after with grace and dignity. Hopefully, Perel’s nonjudgmental, but logical and straight forward ideas will trickle down in society to offer aid and sanctuary to those suffering through the typical fallout from affairs. Written in language that is relevant, honest, and real, Ms. Perel courageously provides new avenues for framing relationships and lovers’ feelings.

2. Don’t Expect Dogma - Trying to put this book into a category of “pro” or “con” relative to affairs would be a mistake. Instead, expect honest evaluation drawn from many interviews, conversations, and counseling sessions — but not from religious, moralistic, or tradition-bound bases. The conclusions aren’t data-driven either.

1. Thank you! - This book came to me at an ideal time in my healing journey. I was married to a CN for almost years and got so much out of this loving, informative, supportive book. I especially appreciated when Debbie emphasized over and over agin how this is not our fault and that CN’s are drawn to people who are exactly like me and that, post CN, we can heal and live lives full of genuine, authentic love. Thank you, your book is a healing gift!

2. Thank you! - I bought this book in hopes to find some answers and it provided me with a lot of clarity. After my unique experience, I didn’t think I could find anything to show me that might hunches were valid. Although there were some things that weren’t spot on, there was a lot of info that was really helpful in my journey to healing. If you have a hunch that you know and have been affected by a covert narcissist, buy this book.

1. MUST READ FOR ALL - Great book that SHOULD be read by twenty something year olds. This book is also great for parents of twenty something year olds to be able to accurately understand the modern day challenges a year olds provide some semblance of advice honestly by just giving them this book. This is also a great read for young folks even eighteen year olds as a preface of what to expect and what to be thinking about as you prepare to go into your s. This book got me thinking about a lot of things and honestly I feel a little bit more prepared to continue the remaining years of my s and ensure that I’m better prepared I can start laying the foundation for my s and s

2. Organized & Relatable - This was what the inside of a psychology textbook contains without the mumbo-jumbo. Doctor Jay is a fabulous writer and her experience really spoke to my year old brain. I am so glad I bit the bullet of digesting some hard-to-hear material and sat through it from start to end. I now feel a revival to my defining decade and believe this will be of great guidance.

3. This got me out of my fog - I started out my senior year of college feeling lost, scared and unmotivated for my future as a year old. This book was able to help me put these struggles I am having into words, and gave me tools to analyze those feelings and overcome them. I would recommend this to any twenty-something, but also to people who are in general feeling as if they are floating through life, as my family members age - found some of the points in this book extremely insightful, and a couple even read it themselves after me.

4. Meant Well but Finished Mediocre - This book was adequate in reaching its goals of explaining the most poignant life lessons (of career, finance, family, love and health) marked in the author’s clients’ ’s however it seemed to present a very middle-class, White narrative. As someone in my early ’s I find the wisdom in the book applicable in theory but lacking in specificity as its perspectives are limited to one charcater. I would love a more multi-dimensional, multi-cultural and in-depth analysis of diverse clients diving into the first-gen experience or low socioeconomic status experience or disabled experience. Would not necessarily recommend to a friend.

5. Most valuable book - I somehow discovered Meg Jay's TED Talk which had a big impact on me. So when I found out she had a book I had to read it. I'm and so happy, almost relieved I read this book now. I strongly related to each and every chapter, this book made me look at life in a whole new way. The Defining Decade is a lifesaver, if only this was a mandatory college read!

6. Meg Jay urges and motivates twentysomethings - Well written and composed of parables, this book conveys the importance of taking control of ones youth, before the advantages of potential slip away. She weaves together three vastly important, hugely overwhelming, seemingly ambiguous and disparate topics: WORK, LOVE, and MIND/BODY. This is a must-read for any twentysomething or thirtysomething that feels lost, misled, or just needs some extra motivation to become the navigator of his or her own life.

7. Absolutely love this book! - This book really helped me get a grasp of what my twentysomething years are like. Like many of the characters in this book, I was feeling overwhelmed with all the challenges that life has brought post school years. Now that we are at a point where we are essentially on our own, somehow we twentysomethings feel like we have to either make it or break it at this point in our lives and that sometimes we tend to easily cut ourselves short and sometimes feel hopeless because maybe we still haven't achieved what we think should be achieved by now and oftentimes frustration gets in. We all know nothing good is going to come out of that but sometimes that seems to be the only option we have. Sigh. But this book really helped me clear things in my mind and now I can think a lot better and more straight. Somehow it helped to know that I'm not the only one who feels the same way I do.

8. Amazing - It took me around a week to read this book. It was so addicting. I highly recommend you pick up this book if you feel like you're a bit "lost in life" in your twenties or even thirties. It talks about how some of her patients were depressed about blowing their life away living the cliche of how their twenties are supposed to be, according to Hollywood. It will make you get in the mood of "now is the time to act." Definitely a must-have.

9. If you or someone you know is in their s this is worth reading - In my opinion Dr. Jay does an excellent job at offering compelling insight on the questions and struggles that many somethings living in the western world are facing today, for we are in a society that is quite different from previous generations. I found the conversations dr. Jay shares in this book to be very familiar and helped bring clarity and perspective to my own journey as a year old recent college grad/grad school student feeling slightly lost and uncertain about the path I'm on. This book has helped me re examine how I am doing life and is also very encouraging!
