1. History buff - If you’re a history buff plus a Stephen King fan like me…then this is the book for you, especially if you have conspiracy theory thoughts and concerns. This was my first novel by the legend that I read and I only bought it because I had just read “Killing Kennedy” and all of that knowledge was fresh on my brain and it DID NOT disappoint.

2. Can’t stop reading - I have the hard cover which I have read times and am considering a th. Every time I read it I discover something new. I love the various sub-plots, all of which add to the main plot. Mr. King has obviously thoroughly researched the history and characters as well as adding his own intuition, resulting in a great story. I haven’t read too many of his other books, but this is one I will keep on my shelf to read again.

3. Pleasantly surprised! - I picked this one up because of interest in the JFK plot line. I couldn’t put it down because of all of the other plot lines laid out, those captivated me even more than JFK’s. The biggest bonus was how SK “harmonizes” this story with characters and places from his other novels, notably “It”. I’m looking forward to watching how the mini series compares.

4. Emotional entanglement on a circular journey - I’ve seen most, if not all of the film adaptations if King’s movies but this is the first book I’ve read of his. My God, this man is truly a masterful storyteller in any genre. The mixture of fate, love, and detailed planning on such a visceral scale is simply amazing. There’s no horror besides the power of fate and the sadness of choices in this novel. Please do yourself a favor and give this book a read. If you have any love for the art of storytelling in you, I’m positive you will love this as well.

5. Long but very well written - Believe it or not, this was my first Stephen King novel. Besides the length, it was a very well written story. And I never saw the end coming. I thought I knew the ending but then there were a lot of pages left. Surprising ending. Well worth the read. Just don't expect to read it in one sitting. LOL

6. Time-travel story at its best - This is most certainly one of the most interesting, engaging, and downright fantastic books I have ever read. It kept me hooked all of the way through and I couldn't put it down. This adventure is one for the history books for sure. Now I'm looking into a new genre, time travel stories! Looking forward to Time and Again by Jack! Thanks Mr. King.

7. Fantastic book - Man, what a fantastic book. King really outdid himself this time: doing thorough research about the 's and 's, making the characters likeable, and for myself, being able to connect to the characters emotionally. Really great for people who like history, fiction, and even romance. I would give it / if I had the option, but stars is all I can give!

8. Another STAR!! - I have read every King book ever written and this one is one of my favorites! I don't read any others of this genre because I prefer more non fiction history and "literary" fiction. I loved that he chose the JFK assassination to meld with his unique style. This was a bit different than his usual and it was not disappointing! I hope he considers using this type again!

9. Gripping read, highly recommended! - I was about to embark on a weeklong trip to Vienna, and knew that I would have some significant downtime during my flights and layovers. To find something to do during that time, I decided to purchase this book, and alas, the book was so gripping that I spent hours upon hours while in Vienna reading. This book caused me to waste my time in Vienna reading instead of exploring the city! Bad Stephen King, bad!
2015-06-14
10. Long and unfocused - A poor attempt at a Jack Finney novel. The hook at the beginning is great but it slides into mediocrity and a "let's put on a show" theme/soap opera for far too long. Endless minutiae about Oswald, short of his bowel movements, do nothing to move the story forward. Seems like King really wanted to write about a teacher who danced, had sex, and lived in a small town. Throwing time travel in was the only way he could get anyone to buy the story. The show they produce will need to do some heavy editing.

1. Gave Me Some Nightmare Fuel - Enjoyed this read and comparing it to the Stanley Kubrick adaptation. I understand that things had to be changed to appeal and make sense in a movie. This story has so much more depth to it than the movie does and has me thinking so much about the roles and relationships between a father and son.

2. Stephen King’s The Shining: The true masterpiece of modern horror! - Having revered The Shining as one of my favorite horror films, I finally decided to read the source material for such a good but different film. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised that this book was hundreds of times better than the movie. New layers of depth added to all characters and plot points. Being able to point at the ballroom scene in the book and compare it to the movie was a treat. It has so much more meaning in the book, and going back and watching the movie, it adds more depth to those scenes. A read that everyone should enjoy!!

3. Amazing - This book gave a complete outcome of the Shining, let’s you really see how bad the movie was produced. A book of course will always be better than the movie, but in this case the movie left out lots of Stephen Kings book, including the Ending, the Overlooks actual outside hedge animals, roque court, playground. There wasn’t a maze at all. So many changes made by the movie after reading the book made the book scarier than the movie. A must read for sure!

4. My all-time favorite Stephen King shocker! - I saw Stanley Kubrick’s classic movie adaptation years before I read this book, but it didn’t stop me from being very disappointed that the movie wasn’t a much more faithful adaptation. This book is a wonderfully spooky, truly terrifying ghost story, which is one of my favorite kinds of horror stories to read! Here’s a tip: Anyone looking for a faithful adaptation should check out the miniseries. With the exception of one terrible CGI-effect involving hedge animals, it’s a great movie! A warning for anyone who decides to watch it(if you can find the DVD for sale anywhere.) Watch out for the chilling scene involving hotel room ! It’s just as terrifying onscreen as it was in the book!

5. Excellent book - A great book, from start to finish. I think Stephen King really hit the big leagues with this book. I liked both Carrie and Salem’s Lot but The Shining took King to another level and I think he would stay at the level up until It. Very different from Stanley Kubrick’s movie. I’m actually glad I saw the movie before reading the book, for if I did the opposite I think I would have hated the movie. Anyway, The Shining is a must read.

6. Wow. - This truly is Stephen King in his prime. The story progressed beautifully and gave a great background on all characters and made us understand them all even if we couldn’t relate to their lives personally. With understanding the characters’ lives and background, you begin to attach yourself to them and maybe even root for their well-being; but it all comes crashing down terribly quickly in a deadly flourish of self-pity, hatred, confusion, terror and love. The most surprising message I can take away from this work of art regards the surprisingly awesome drive of the human spirit to fight through adversity and pain, on the greater search for peace, love and happiness. It is a relatively quick read with relatively short chapters but it does not spare any details whatsoever. I will definitely be reading this again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great Stephen King novel.

7. The Shining - I watched the movie version as a child and it was instantly one of my favorites. Watching it as an adult is not the same as the film leaves a lot to question. I decided to read the book and I'm happy that I did. As always, the book outdoes the movie and goes beyond the surface that the movie only scratches. Definitely a must read!
2016-03-25
8. Better than the movie! - I decided to read this book after having already seen the movie at least twenty times. By the end, I had always felt like there were questions and uncertainties that were still left unanswered. Finally, I realized that those questions were getting in the way of my satisfaction in the end. After finally reading the book, let me tell you that it is way scarier, crazier, and textually richer in ways that the movie could never be. Frankly, there were parts that scared the hell out of me (the twins in the movie have nothing on the horrors in this). It definitely answered my questions and was so gripping I could hardly put it down. If you like the movie but are looking to turn the terror notch up, then read this book. You won't regret it.

9. Heeere's Johnny! - I am sorry, but I just have to say it. The whole time I read the book, I was looking forward to the old "Heeere's Johnny!" Instead, I got something entirely different. Jack Torrance turned out to be like you and me. He was simply a man with a troubled past hoping for a brighter present and future. Plus, Jack actually tried to reconnect with his family while writing his latest work of art and looking after the deserted hotel. Also, there was more to the haunted hotel than just mischievious spirits waiting around to take you by surprise. I could just picture the party from an earlier year in the life of the Overlook, not to mention those hedge animals. Man! they sure crept me out as much as they did Jack and Mr. Halloran. Maybe even more. The movie may be memorable, but I will always think of the novel when it comes to mind.

10. Great book but not for squeamish people - I thought this book was very interesting but also spiked my interest into Stephen King's books Disclaimer: The Shining might not be for squeamish types and definitely not for younger audiences Great book overall though, look forward to other books by Stephen King! :)

11. AMAZING! A must read! - So I saw the movie for the first time about a month ago and was like, "WOW. I have to read the book now!" So I read the book and was not disappointed. The movie left so much out. This is my new favorite book and Stephen King is my new favorite author. For anyone who is contemplating on whether to read this book, it is a GREAT read!

1. Intrigued Throughout - I could NOT put this book down. The story felt plausible, regressing into the art of fiction. Symbolism and its repercussions create the story. I absolutely enjoyed how the author transitions into perspectives, allowing the reader to dive into the mind of a character, yet, feeling invisible, standing right there in the cabin not knowing what will happen next.

2. A Good Read - I read the reviews before I downloaded the book. They were right, the ending sucked. Good read, yet it felt like so much detail and extra unneeded stuff went into the filler, that the end was rushed and unfinished. I like stuff to be left to the imagination, but it felt like the ending was just unfinished. But then I thought about it all…. And this book reminds me of current times…people being brainwashed by social media to believe certain things…. Extremism being blared through the media…people that will believe the rabbit holes they are being drug into…..that’s what this story reminded me of in the end. Being vague so not to give this story away

3. Like a poorly written TV series - Was quite a page turner at the start. Then…blah. The novel became tedious and in the end no true resolution to the torment of the characters. Simply put, dooms day gloom with out any boom. Lacking in development of finalities and too much description of scenery. Too much death without purpose. Glad I only paid eight dollars for the less than satisfying experience. It was like a bad TV series where you try to hang in there and then…seriously, that’s how this ends. Nope. Not a fan of this writing.

4. Seriously?! - This was supposed to be “taut”, “terrifying”, etc. etc.? The only extreme thing about it was the gory and graphic depictions of violence. What a waste of time and money. Read to the end as I kept expecting that it would live up to the reviews. Ending was a big “What?”. Would rate it less than one star if that was an option.

5. Good introduction to the author - I picked up this book in the airport. First time I'd heard of him. I thought the book was great. Sure, there were a few times the narrative was lost, but all in all a solid story about what we do for those we love and nice twist to the age old, one person you love for the loves of many. Me and husband ended up having a great discussion after I finished and anything that sparks a convo is a great read.

6. Exciting premise that wasn’t explored - This book is fun to read. Suspense is set up well and it really gets you excited to see how it ends. Unfortunately, you will be left disappointed. The author sets up so many questions that aren’t answered and you will be left not caring about the plot or any characters. I think he writes well, and I have heard good things about other works of his which I am excited to give a chance

7. I feel so bad for Paul Tremblay - his work has always been masterful...until now :( - A great writer, one of my favorites, actually. But this is his first published work where I couldn’t find even ONE character or plot development worth any emotional investment. I finished reading it of course — I can’t stand people who only finish books if they enjoy every single chapter or whatever, that’s not how literature (or narrative storytelling in general) works...but I digress. I mean to say I knew I was in for a very messy & far too unfocused story that couldn’t punctuate — or in many cases simply realize — more than a few of the MANY statements about our current world’s horrors that exist so casually on the fringes of our everyday lives. Tremblay isn’t taking on just one set of fundamentalists or extremists, he’s not writing this book to finger-wag the intolerant bigots who very much exist in larger numbers than we’d like to admit, (as the protagonists of this novel include two married gay men with an adopted daughter, who by the way is sadly the best and worst monkey wrench in this novel; you could almost unravel the mess entirely by omitting her character completely but then it’s maybe a novella at most, likely a short story). Tremblay doesn’t quite pull off the Kubrickian style when your comes to nuclear doomsday scenarios, psychology of warfare, as well as having your entire life be threatened or your known reality shattered in front of you within the events of a single day/evening wherein the nature of survival: fight or flight competes with a nagging panic about what it all means to “be” and how could either you OR the rest of the world be insane without realizing it until this very moment. These are broad strokes, and just the surface of very densely explored subjects in Stanley Kubrick’s filmography — typically with just one or two being the focus of a single project. Here in Tremblay’s latest novel, however, they’re littered throughout a jumbled sequence of events dressed up as a (MUCH) tamer version of Michael Haneke’s brilliant home-invasion horror film(s), “Funny Games.” You’re left with a sense of incompletion. The notion that you were about to maybe explore some interesting territory while the razor-thin plot premise played out the ONLY way any decent home-invasion-horror story can, (which is sort of a spoiler I guess?)

8. Ending is terrible - I think leaving an open ended ending is a very lazy writing technique. It leaves the reader unsatisfied. This could have been a good story if there was not so much description and the plot moved a little faster. And the ending was terrible. Do not waste your money on this book. It took me months to read and I’m a fast reader. Just not that interesting and now severely disappointed
2018-10-11
9. What? - The first half of this book was pretty good. Kept me in suspense. But then, Later on, toward the end, it was really weird how he was writing. One of the main characters Sabrina, was talking to Andrew, Eric, and Leonard. She was explaining to them why she was doing what she did. But it seemed like it switched back and forth from her explaining, to the author himself taking over And narrating for her, to her again. It was very weird and didn’t make any sense. And it dragged on longer than it needed to. It got boring and was hard for me to finish. I’m kinda upset that I wasted $ on this book. Don’t waste your $$ on it.

1. AWFUL - I’m not entirely sure if King actually wrote this book. It’s awful. Makes you wonder if the publishers allow others to ghostwrite under the King brand just for the name. I say this because I’ve read some of his books that are just very good reads, and then there are others that just don’t seem to match his style, rhythm, and cadence. This is one of the bad ones.

2. Under The Dome a bit Underwelming! - Pretty good story, but too many characters. It was confusing to me, trying to keep up with them. Fewer bit characters could have made the remaining ones more meaningful which would have made it more interesting and the characters more familiar. Not a fan of the “big” premise that was causing the Dome crisis and not a fan of the ending that felt rushed. and anti climactic.
2021-01-21
3. A definite must-read! - Up until the very end where they explain exactly why the Dome was put in place, it was such an enticing story from all the conspiracies and controversies with strong political resonance with our own politics in reality. The actual explanation for the Dome however...I won’t reveal why, obviously, but when I found out why the Dome existed, let’s just say my initial reaction was, “...Wait, seriously?” Not in a good way either. But still a good read, and I found myself constantly looking up words along the way, so extending my vocabulary is always a plus! Onward to the TV series (which was the reason why I read it first, because that’s the proper way to enjoy a show or movie adapted from a novel)!

4. A monstrous tale, but worth the wait. - One of King’s three great “Uber-novels,” alongside It and The Stand. A high bar to compare this story to, no doubt, but for me, it didn’t disappoint. Don’t get me wrong, I had my doubts around page or so. Like most of King’s books, it’s longer than it strictly needs to be, and a great deal of the exposition and character subplots are there for atmosphere, not plot related reasons. I read chapter after chapter of people treating one another horrifically, and it started to feel like just straight up torture porn. I wondered if it would pay off in the end. I can’t spoil too much, but for me it did. It’s all for a purpose, and it’s one that made pages all worthwhile. This one is in my top Stephen King works of all time. Do yourself a favor and give it a try.

5. You still got it, my man! - I've been reading Steven King novels since I was ( probably a little young for " The Gunslinger " but it didn't stop me from enjoying every page. ) now almost , I still find every one of his books thrilling, frightening, angering, inspiring and rewarding by the end of them. " Under the Dome " is no exception. Keep em comin, my man!! You never disappoint. ;-)

6. Worth the investment in time - I would have rated this book . star if I could have. But, it was more worthy of stars than . I greatly enjoyed this read. I read King avidly as a young teenager. It has been many years since I've read consistently for pleasure. At years old, I can appreciate King books now more than ever. The ending wasn't as strong as the book as a whole. However, I was still satisfied with the ending. My only other lightweight gripe would be that I had wished for a more revenge filled ending for the book's antagonist. Human antagonist I should say. I suppose the dome was the other antagonist.

7. Not My Favorite King Tale - But....not every tale can be a favorite. Right? ...or can it? At any rate, it took me tries before I finally got into this story deep enough to not finish it. It was cumbersome to say the least. I think the thing that got me most was the lack of "caring" for the characters. It seemed they were all just merely names (and a lot of them!)
I didn't care who lived, who died, who anything. I simply wanted this to end so I could get on with a new tale.
Don't misunderstand. Mr. King and I go way back. Wayyyyyyy back over decades and decades of characters that I still feel nostalgic over. I Love Stephen King. Just not this book so much.
2013-11-01
8. Good, Thrilling Read - Under the Dome is a perfect example of how good Stephen King is at crafting a story and developing characters. I love this book, and the meaning behind the story. I am not thrilled with the ending, but that has more to do with what I wanted to happen as opposed to the ending not working. The ending fit with the point (or lack of one) that King was pushing home. That's the only reason I give it out of instead of the full .

9. LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!! - Oh my gosh, so good!!!!!!!! Totally recommend it,the only thing is its really long, and read it on the iPad not the physical book cause I read it in the physical book and by the end of the book it was falling apart it was so big!!!!!!!!!! If I can read it, anyone can. I started reading it when there was starting to be ads for the tv show and finished it way before the tv series started. Kinda mad how much they changed the show.

10. Great Book! - Started watching the tv series and decided that I wanted to read the book to see the similarities. Wise move. Just finished the book and it was outstanding! Much better than the series. So many more details and an attention grabbing story. Couldn't put it down. Haven't read any Steven King books in a while but now looking forward to his new book that will be out soon.

11. Great Book - This is an excellent book. The characters are real, weird and real weird. Not quite what I'd call scary but it definitely has its chilling moments. I loved this book. Lots of ppl are saying the ending isn't any good. But it was the only way it could have ended. The characters were intelligent enough to try everything until they found something that worked. I don't think that's a bad ending at all.

12. Very good book.. a little to descriptive - Love this book, he gets a bit side tracked at times.. that is King for you. I love the concept and the end result though. Do yourself a favor read the book and do not watch the TV show, its total garbage. This book is so much better, they have destroyed any resemblance to a fine piece of work with this "show" on TV. Stars from me. Minus one star for the occasional rambling.

13. UGH! - I had read //, which I think must be one of the most engaging and well-written books by Stepehn King, when I decided to invest many hours our of my life to be entertained by "Under the Dome". Ugh, what a mistake! I was offended by the antagonists not only because they were awful, but because King reverted to such painful stereotypes. I get it, religious wingnuts are bad, but that's like saying all politicians are bad. Just too easy. I felt terrible when I finished this book. A great author...Stephen King is that! This book: Horrendous on every level after the concept, especially the ending. My imagination was far better. I should offer a re-write.
2013-07-06
14. Thoroughly great read - It's long, very detailed and rich in characters. A great read! The ending was good. Lot's of human depth, good and bad. I am not sure I want to watch the miniseries as it will take away the very personal part of individual imagination. I mean our own imagination is what makes a great book even better... Our own visuals of the different personalities and events coupled with our very personal interpretation of events - that will always make reading better than watching someone else's interpretation. You feel this book and thank God you are not experiencing in real life what the characters did. Another superb work of literature by Stephen King. I hope to meet and talk to him one day. He must be an amazing person with a special intellect. I was totally moved by this book..nuf said.

1. Almost gave it up then BAM! - A great read, sometimes it dragged too much and I just wanted it to end, then I got to about the last pages and omg. everything came together. Really was good at making me hate the bad guy. Nice twist, I kinda knew it was coming but not to that extent. Would recommend though.

1. On my seat the whole time - I really enjoyed this book. There was a bond made with the characters in a such an emotional and heart wrenching way. I was constantly worried yet curious for the main character the whole time. I had many theories in my head the entire time and wasn’t disappointed with the outcome.

2. Kept me up every night!!! - This book was my first from this writer and I’ll tell you honestly that I was a bit miffed with the timeline. It wet back and forward a lot in the beginning but I kept reading and it turned out to be a great read!! I highly recommend this book and now I’m onto the nd book by this author (not a series) I’ll let you know how that one is shortly. Happy Reading!!!

3. Brilliant - Lulls you to sleep with stories, then hits you upside the head with a bone chilling statement. Amazing how just a few well placed words can pack such a punch. Definitely worth the time and money to read. Just don’t read it alone in the dark, or at least not by a bunch of windows facing the woods.

4. If you’re a horror fiend like me LOOK. NO. FURTHER: - I have read hundreds of horror novels a novellas. Mr King, Mr. Straub, Ms. Jackson, Mr. Poe, Mr. Cutter, Mr. Tremblay, ok you get it; I love horror. It takes a great deal to scare me in a novel, like for something to stick with you while you’re reading it and put it down and LONG after you’re finished. Besides the author’s incredible story from Reddit to a published novel, I went in with low expectations - you’re not going to get some grammatical, literal masterpiece (in a way you are though). It’s not a paradox, ironic, an allegory, etc. However, it’s more impressive than National Bestsellers tend to be, and the genius idea Dathan had to write this in the way that memories do come back to the human mind is brilliant. What scared me the most here is what wasn’t said, what is implied. You fill in the blanks as you go and especially after it’s over. Yes, things happen along the way but if you need everything spelled out for you I’m sure Dan Brown has a new book! That’s why this worked so well for me. It has moments of straight and pure terror, but never has a book crawled up my skin the way this one did. No offense Dathan, I did not like Bad Man at all. If you didn’t and haven’t read this, don’t judge an author by something that may be brilliant, I just didn’t think it was, and start from what made him famous. If you’re not bothered by this, I’ll send you the money it cost to buy it.

5. Superb! - Couldn’t put it down. Once the pieces start falling into place, the premise goes from odd, creepy, to terrifying. Just finished reading for the second time. Still gave me goosebumps & Aurenbach is a brilliant writer. Wish I could find more authors with such talent in scaring me without the mindless gore or sci fi elements. This book slowly & methodically puts pieces together in a story that’s so unnerving because one could picture the possibility of its potential reality. The “cat finding mission “ was the most terrifying part for me & still gave me chills. Aurenbach’s vivid descriptions made me feel as if I was there. EXCELLENT READ!

6. Creepy and cruel. - The book started pretty solid, creepy and mysterios. Some twists early on were satisfying. As I read on, it became more and more repetitive and lost that edge. /rds through I started skimming just to see where the book was going next, since I had lost interest. Ultimately, the ending was unsatisfying.

7. Never Read Better - I’ve read this book several times since my cousin recommended it to me. It never ceases to amaze. I can confidently say that this is my number one favorite book of all time. I find myself nearly speechless after each read. / would recommend to anyone looking for something that will inflict strong emotion.

8. I will be forever scarred......... - A sad, scary, thrilling story of two young friends, and what a seemingly single innocent event at school, can rip apart two families, and how the suffering never ends. It has left me scarred, scared, sad, and some what hopeless. Makes you ponder a bit when you put your info out there...... Pen Pal is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time, and you can’t help but ride that roller coaster of emotions throughout the book. Well done!!

9. Chilling, heartbreaking, and terrified the hell out of me - Yet I couldn’t put it down. I read it twice; the first time I read through many of the crucial parts too quickly in anticipation of that was coming next that I wanted to go over it again to make sure I understood every detail, and the significance of each. Other reviewers have said it and I agree that this book will stay with you long after you read it, and that, I believe, is usually a great indicator of how good a story is told.
2018-02-24
10. Creepy as Fck - I loved this book. It's one of the most unnerving stories I've ever read namely because the unfolding terror is mainly happening to a couple of kids. The way the author pieces together a collection of memories from the narrator's childhood / adolescence makes this book unlike any other and makes for a very authentic story. You should probably just stop reading reviews and buy it.

11. Creepy awesomeness - Wow. I loved this book.
The twists and turns and curveballs were perfect.
Even though the ending is SOMEWHAT predictable, I found myself having to flip through and reread passages to verify that I did, in fact, learn these clues earlier, even though I didn’t realize they were clues as I was reading the words lol.
(That probably didn’t make much sense – but I think it will make sense if you have read this book!)
I also kept having to reread passages to cement the timeline of events in my head, because the author does a fantastic job of tripping the reader up about when key events took place.
Very very creepy!!
I enjoyed it so much, I’m ordering a physical copy right now on Amazon to add to my collection!

12. Amazing - As soon as I heard about this book I bought it immediately. I loved every page of it. Not only have I read this book around times, but I ordered the paperback and the iBooks version. I don't get into books very often, but this book had me so into it I couldn't stop reading and eventually cried at the ending. Beautiful.

13. amazing story - this book is scary because it's so possible that it could actually happen to someone. I love the way it's written, too. you can always foreshadow what will happen. the ending makes me want to cry. this story is overall amazing, and I recommend it to anyone who likes a creepy story with a heartbreaking ending.

14. Fantastic - For those who love no sleep stories, or just stories that send chills down your spine I highly recommend. From start to end you read a true story about trying to survive a scary life, that will keep you hooked till the very end. As saddening as this ale is, it's heartening knowing the author finally knows the truth about one of the biggest horrors that haunted his life.

1. Funny, gut-wrenching, well-written satire. - This is the first major novel I have read in a while, and I was quite intrigued when I hit the last page. There were moments like in the chapter “Genesis” where Bateman is just listing out albums and songs, where I was laughing so hard, then there were instances like in chapters such as “Killing Child in Zoo” where I just felt deathly allergic. This is an amazing satire, definitely not recommended to the faint of heart, but recommended if you want to read something complex and laid-back.

2. Didn’t own up to the hype - Unlike the high standards I had for this book, it didn’t seem to be of any value. Most space was taken by inner monologues of clothing brands and filled space of scenery, there was no true defined point, other than the implied consumerism “American dream” trope, this book doesn’t really dive into madness, however displays the gory imagery of the after effects of the characters doings.

3. I’m scarred for life - I read this book for Banned Books Week. I can absolutely understand why it was challenged. I can't even think of how to write a proper review about it. I just want to throw out expletives and wild hand gestures. Bateman scared the out of me! He's the guy everyone wants to date and wants around, and he's completely freaking psycho. He's a serial killer that has total breaks from reality. He commits atrocious violent murders. He even comes right out and tells people, but everyone is so caught up in what's the latest most expensive trend in the city that they just blow it off as jokes. The sexual torture scenes are so horrifying that I had to take breaks. Everything is so detailed that I almost threw up once. The way the author divides the insanity with completely mundane who's wearing what and going where and eating which item and drinking which drink and so is genius. It winds the reader down and then he hits us again. This is so scary because society is really like this. We have to actually be hit upside the head with something before we recognize the evil from the normal. Inside Bateman's head is a terrible place to be, but sadly it's interesting too. He has some kind of crazy appeal. This story completely disturbed me. I don't think I could reread it or recommend it, but I still think it deserves a high rating.

4. American Psycho - / So here goes, god, how do I do this? American Psycho is one of my favourite books. It comes in four waves, each wave about pages long. The first wave is mind numbingly repetetive, but purposefully so. It follows Patrick Bateman as he wanders around New York City, going to clubs, going to restaurants, working out. Bret Easton Ellis only drops little hints of Patrick's insanity along the way, and that's why it's so jarring and so shocking when he blinds the homeless man early into the second wave, it actually made me put the book down and sit there for a couple minutes before picking it back up. The way Bret Easton Ellis controls this book is brilliant, there's no other word for it. The way some people write about this book would made it sound very boring and graphic, but let me tell you that I think this book is actually riveting. Sure it's insanely violent and features pages and pages of descriptions of aesthetics and pornography (for satirical purposes) but there's an amazing entertainment value to it. You want to see what vile, surreal hijinks Patrick Bateman gets up to. Also, it's hilarious.

5. Genius Pure and Simple - Brilliant paen to the entire sweep and grand foolishness that was the s. He captures everything that odious about it, the obsession with consumerism, with personal grooming, with fluffy, meaningless pop and more. Ellis has a gift for eyeing what's most objectionable about a clique of people or an era and setting it down in the most addictive, alluring observations imaginable. If you want to know everything perverse about a sordid decade that was maybe the worst in American history, you could do a lot worse than downloading this one.

6. American psycho - Amazing. My favorite book by far, Ellis' eye for detail and drawing the author a mental image is both impeccable and fascinating. Truly a remarkable read for those with a strong stomach and those who can see Patrick Bateman from a different point of view rather then a demented serial killer. Only for the people who have a mature enough mindset

7. Truly psychotic - This book is troubling. Not because of the explicit passages of gore and sex. It's because you can't stop reading. You tell yourself it's too disgusting to read and that you're going to put it down but something pushes you on. It makes you question your morals in a way. "If I'm still reading this, what kind of person am I?" The unrelenting and disgusting allure is what makes this book great. If you start you will not want to stop until the materialistic, blood-flecked ride is over. I cannot recommend this book, however. Save your comparatively positive outlook from suffering this novel and read Dr. Seuss instead.

8. This book has every element of postmodern literature - American Psycho is extremely complex. The way the characters are aware of the world is advanced in every way possible. The narrator, Patrick Bateman, provides readers with both a window into a portrayal of an actual psychotic killer, and a satirical version of a successful wall street tycoon. In between killing sprees (which are more graphic than can be described in this review) and hilarious satire of daily routine and high quality products, there is quite dull and boring descriptions of what people are wearing and music reviews but that aside the book is superb.

1. I liked it - Starling and Hannibal were great and I especially liked how the author expanded on Crawford’s character from the first book. Crawford’s personal stuff and the arc of his relationship with Starling was barely touched on in the movie and was one of my favorite parts to read. I think Red Dragon had a bit of a better pace. This book seemed to have a couple parts where I was bored and the narrative felt unfocused, but not very often. The characters and the voice of the author kept me reading even though I already knew what would happen from seeing the movie. I loved the details of Starling’s determination and intelligence coupled with her humility and moments of self-doubt. I found her to be an admirable woman and a highly competent FBI agent in training. She faces the sexism of her world with dignity and persistence and she pushes herself to do her best work in honor of the women who Buffalo Bill has savaged. She also makes a great foil for the empathy-lacking sociopathic yet brilliant Hannibal. They treat each other with a rare respect that they otherwise nearly live their lives without, Hannibal being a murderous convict and Starling being a woman in a male-dominated world. I think the characterizations were deeper than in Red Dragon but the narrative wasn’t as focused, and it’s hard to top the ending of Dragon. Great secondary characters in this one who really come to life such as Starling’s roommate Ardelia Mapp and the bug nerds at the Smithsonian with whom Starling consults. Red Dragon scared me more. Although the killer in that one and Buffalo Bill in this one are equally believable and interesting, the author spent more time fleshing out the background and perspective on the killer in RD. Where the Red Dragon killer struck me as inevitable and undefeatable, Bill came off as sort of predictable and almost boring by comparison. But we also get lots more Hannibal in this one, and his chemistry with Starling alone is very much worth the read. Overall I didn’t think this one was quite as clean or irrefutable as Red Dragon, but it was still very smart and full of terrific scenes.

2. A Wonderful Read - I was one of those people who saw the movie before I read the book, and after having experienced both mediums I have to say that I am equally impressed with both. The book, however, does a better job at story telling considering that it goes into great detail and offers more insight. It was easy to understand and follow the plot. The characters were grounded, memorable, and most notably, Hannibal Lecter was as villainous as he was mysterious. I’d definitely recommend this book, especially to those who loved the movie and want a little more from the story.

3. What a book!! - My all time favourite book and movie. Once you start reading this you cannot stop until you’ve reached the end. Most movies don’t do justice to the books they are based on, but this one was exceptional. Anthony Hopkins is phenomenal in his portrayal of Hannibal the cannibal Lecter! Love love love silence of the lambs!

1. Literary technique grows tiresome and leaves narrative flat. - While I can appreciate the interesting take on this tale through the viewpoint of the survivor interviews, I am ultimately left uninvested in the characters or the greater story arc due to the disjointed and abbreviated nature of the testimonies. There are some really interesting perspectives on the events of World War Z seen through the lens of a cultural and geo-political framework, however they are captured in such a fragmented way that the reader is never able to emotionally buy into the struggle in a meaningful way.

2. Eye opening! - This book is not a book, it is art, it is experiences, it's everything, which most zombie books lack. This art shows you so many different perspectives of life, suffering, human sufficiency and tenacity for life, it opens your eyes of the various cultures around the world, and our differences that aren't so different if you look at it as the big picture. It continues to show the secrecy and cynicism of the world and most governmental powers. And so much more. Highly recommended! The movie does not do the book justice, not because it's bad but because it's just not the same feel. And it kinda goes against the book as to show human kind as one unit and twists it to show you all the social standards, beliefs and concepts of today's society.
2014-11-24
3. Worth reading but concept is hard to execute - I loved the concept (write the book as a historic report based on numerous eye witness interviews), but it makes for a very confused book that lacks a continuous thread. I still recommend reading it, but every few pages a new person is introduced with a different story, rarely ever to be mentioned again. As a result there is no narrative that "pulls you into the story". That being said, most of the individual stories are real page turners.

4. Unlike Anything I've Read Before - World War Z is a phenomenal science fiction novel that brings a zombie apocalypse to life through journalistic story telling and historical lessons as if it has happened. The reader is brought through the assumed start and final days and current situation. The story takes the reader all over the world as if they are trying to solve the mystery and cure with those in "history." The imagination out into the zombie figures was outstanding and logically real. This book is a great fictional read. , times better than the movie. Highly recommended...

5. Decent. - For the most part this kept me entertained, it even had me on edge at times. Although, I found myself wandering into random thought while reading certain dry parts. I didn't care enough to re-read most of those parts. Possibly a factor of my own laziness, but I usually don't find myself doing this. Intriguing idea for a novel that could have been better laid out better at parts.
2014-06-26
6. This book would have been better if it was non-fiction - At times, this book seemed long with very descriptive detail. The the amount of imagination kept me interested, but at time bored with to much technical talk. This book really did take you into a zombie apocolapse, with the use of parallels that can mirror social maladies.
2013-12-23
7. First Time I Liked The Movie More - I started reading this book before the movie because the book's always better, right? Not in the case. I forced myself halfway through this set of stories told in the past-tense by half-drawn characters and couldn't go on. There's no immediacy, no characters that are fleshed out enough to make me care. It's a great story idea, but the execution leaves it just that; a story, not an experience.
2013-10-26
8. Only one word can describe this book - amazing! - First off, this book is a perfect read for those who commute via train or bus. The book is written as a collection of short stories (actually notes) of the fictional zombie apocalypse - which, in my opinion, made it better as they are all in the first person or told as interviews. This is one of the most memorable books I've read. What amazes me most is how the author provided so much detail, and considered how such an event would impact so many groups around the world differently. I mean, even dogs would be different! Truly a remarkable book
2013-09-23
9. Couldn't finish it - I can't remember the last time I didn't finish a book. years ago? Even if a book is underwhelming, I finish it. And I love apocalypse stories. But this book was a chore to read from page through where I gave up around page . With no main characters and no real plot, this book was plodding and surprisingly uninteresting for a topic as interesting as a zombie war. It was too detailed where it didn't need to be (I don't care about the specifics of all the different weapons that didn't work) and not detailed enough where it should have been (where was the fear? the panic? the anxiety?) The characters interviewed were so matter-of-fact about what happened they could have been zombies themselves. The only thing that really interests me about this book is why so many others liked it.
2013-08-30
10. A let down - Perhaps I was expecting the excitement of the movie previews. This is entirely different. In concept, it was kinda going somewhere, but I'm sorry to say the book was really disconnected from the reader. It highlighted some interesting premise for the situation/genre, but failed to keep my interest, to build my sympathy for a character, to establish continuity - basically all of the things I look for. The screen play must have really rocked to get such an expensive budget- so I'm looking forward to that hoping it is nothing like the book at all.

1. DON’T READ IF YOU’RE AN ANIMAL LOVER! - I won’t lie, I didn’t (couldn’t) finish this book. It was a great book, had all my favorite elements; disease, apocalyptic events, the unknown deep of the ocean (think Sphere) but it also had two elements I avoid at all costs. Dogs and animals dying or hurt and young boys being abducted and vanishing from the face of the earth. If you can get past those things by all means read it, it was very good for as far as I got but I couldn’t get any farther than the abused dog and and the missing small boy. Sorry Nick Cutter

2. Not a fan of this novel. - Bulky, choppy, did not flow well. Cutter’s “The Troop” was a much better read with a nice cadence. This was a chore to read. Almost gave up and went to something else. Possibly one of my least favorite novels in this genre. It almost seems that Nick was trying too hard with this one.

3. Terror Miles Under the Sea - The ‘Gets is a pandemic devastating humanity with no cure in sight until a new substance is found under the sea. Communication is lost with the submarine lab and its leading researcher. The last recordings and writings seem like a descent into madness... what happened miles below the surface? Nick Cutter has done it again and thoroughly wiped me as a reader. This was thrilling to read from beginning to end and just exploded in my face leaving me numb in an excruciatingly haunting way.

1. Multiverse Of Mundanity - Jason has somehow pulled all the disjointed craziness of the series thus far into a brilliantly realized narrative. I feel like the best serialized media makes that which came before better in retrospect; however I cannot overstate that the original vision for this stupidly insightful multiverse was instrumental in making this impressive feat of storytelling possible. Hats off to you, JP

1. year starting to read again - I read the Shinning and then Doctor Sleep as a way to get back into reading since academia ruined the love for me. At some points I liked Doc Sleep more than the Shinning due to character developments. Some parts of Doc Sleep angered me, such as a plot twist near the end of the book that really did nothing for the story or solving the “who is the steamhead” in one sentence. Overall, i loved this book and I am really sad to say goodbye to Danny.

2. Very inspiring - Stephen King is a king. The king of writing.
I loved the book. So inspiring. I read some reviews complaining about the multiple references to AA. Am not in AA, but geez did I appreciate those! Stephen King is able to grab the big picture and express it in an entertaining way. Masterful. To be in the inner of one character, and several. Yes I love his rich writing. His vocabulary. Which forces me in any case, to go to the dictionary. Uplifting, enriching, compassionate writing. Yet able to describe things as they are, good and evil. In fair amounts on both sides!

3. Slightly Above Average and Undercooked - The Movie had a better ending, let me start there. It’s Stephen King so you can expect good, engaging storytelling with the Book. But there is a sneaky lingering sense that he pulled his punches a bit. There is enough raw content in this book to make a masterpiece but he held his hand, maybe because of time? Maybe he ran out of ideas? Or maybe for ‘political’ reasons? Who knows? He could have really turned up the heat in this story with true horror instead of the few teasing tidbits that we got. What we have here is the shadow of a masterpiece that suffers from ‘neatness’, a fair bit of filler and underdeveloped ideas and tangents. I expect Part (Shining Part ?) and that this universe will be fleshed out. Until then, stars for being only slightly above average, undercooked, and being outperformed by the movie with a lazy ending.

4. One of Kings BEST - Aside from the gruesome deaths of the victims, this book is a non-stop thrill ride through the imagination of one of America’s best storytellers. Loved how Danny resolves his issues from childhood to adulthood with the help of those human angels that seem to pop out of nowhere when you need them. Not being predictable or inappropriate like so many other authors I will not name; King always delivers a spellbinding story told as only he can. Thx for the nightmares and the adrenaline rushes!

5. Dr Sleep - I gave Dr Sleep stars (-/ if I could have). Being a long time “constant reader” of King, I was happy it didn’t disappoint. I couldn’t put the book down. I truly enjoyed the character development and the unique, unexpected and sudden King style of story telling. Dr Sleep was a very worthwhile read and I recommend it even to the non-King readers (although first reading the star “The Shining” is a prerequisite) Hal R

6. The perfect sequel. - One of my favorite Stephen King books and the perfect sequel to The Shining. It is extremely well written and impossible to put down once you get started. It’s one of those books you can read over and over again without growing tired of it. Stephen King killed it again and as with all of his books it was worth every dollar spent.

7. Loved It - The Shining as a story was something that I always knew about, but even though I’ve been reading Stephen King since childhood, I’d not actually read it until this year. I knew the movie, the story of the scary hotel in the mountains and the spooky stuff that happened there. But, on finally reading The Shining as a grown woman with a lot of trauma in my past, the thing that actually scared me about it was this man justifying and excusing his abusive behavior in more and more ridiculous ways. This struck me as so frighteningly real, so authentic a representation of abuse that I couldn’t help but love and hate the book all at the same time. Now that I’ve just finished Doctor Sleep, I’m again blown away by just how frightening the story is. Not because of the scary monsters, but because of the struggle that Doc, and eventually Abra, have to face with trying to jump off of the wheel that turns the cycle of abuse and addiction. It is always so amazing to me the way that SK hides these deeply real and relatable stories so perfectly inside the fantastical and terrifying stories of otherworldly monsters. I loved it. Thank you, Stephen.

8. Wonderful. - As always, this is a fantastic piece of literature from Stephen King. The story was very gripping as soon as the book started. The character development was absolutely amazing. I really felt for the Stone family and Dan as the book progressed. My father is an alcoholic so this book really resonated with me, and I feel like I was able to take away a lot from it.

9. Everything you want in a S.King thriller! - Hands down one of the best books I’ve read! It’s not the sequel you would expect to the shining but it is COMPLETELY worth the read. It’ll have you at the edge of your seat from the first page until the last. I’m never going to be able to look at a RV the same again! Moral of this review, buy the book you seriously won’t regret it!

10. Epic! - I have always been wary of audiobooks because I'm very picky about the narrator. But let me say that Will Patton did this novel so much justice that I went out and bought the other Stephen King books narrated by him. The combination of Patton's voice and King's imagination led this novel to becoming one of my favorite. I very highly recommend this audiobook.

11. King must love AA meetings... - What happened to Stephen King?
This book is so see through, boring, and rushed.
I mean, who didn't see that ending coming!?
Though I didn't expect it to be as anticlimactic as is was. Yawn... The characters are forgetful. I didn't really care who lived or died, I just wanted it to be over.
And what's with all the Alchoholics Anonymous?
It's throughout the entire book. He's a drunk, we get it.
This book should've never happened...

12. Finding Dan Torrance - Years after the horror at the Overlook Hotel, we catch up to Dan Torrance in his adult life and career. Never too far from the shadows and echoes of the Overlook, Dan still deals with his unique abilities, colloquially called the shine. The shine in others varies in strength, and Dan gets glimpses of those folks frequently, for good or for not so good. Dan really puts the shine to use for good when he lands a job in a small town New Hampshire (recommended to him by Tony) at a hospice.
Then he finally meets a person that has been calling to him, using the shine, for a long time. That person will change his life in a number of unexpected ways.
Doctor Sleep is an excellent read.

13. Meesh 's review of Doctor Sleep - This book is a must read for any true Stephen King fan. I just finished Doctor Sleep and it was amazing. It's about Dan Torrance from the Overlook Hotel all grown up. I love how Stephen King finally gives us the Torrance family history. Dan is grown up & is trying to save Abra, his niece from this strange tribe who use the mist of children to live forever. They're a vampiric cult whom all follow the orders of Rose the Hat. At the end Danny must face his own personal demons as well as maintain his composure to save his niece, her family, and his friends. It's a must read!! The master is at it again!! I'm ready for Stephen King's next book Revival! //.

1. Classic - One of the first book of short stories I read by Stephen King. I was in the th grade and ‘The Boogeyman’ scared me into some serious insomnia for quite some time. The very best thing that Stephen King does is draw people into his stories. The characters - the reader loves the ones he wants us to love and loathe the ones who are bullies, mean, abusive drunks, people who are very unlikable. Even though they aren’t always evil. The evil is neither loathed nor loved. The evil is what the reader fears.

2. Terrifying collection from the King of Horror! - This is one of only three short story collections I’ve read by Stephen King, along with Skeleton Crew and The Bazaar of Bad Dreams. I have also read Different Seasons and Four Past Midnight, but to me, those are collections of novellas, not short stories. This is one of the best horror story collections I’ve ever read! Every story is truly frightening! To me, the scariest stories include: Jerusalem’s Lot, Graveyard Shift, The Mangler, Gray Matter, I Am the Doorway, The Boogeyman, Strawberry Spring, Quitters, Inc., The Ledge, One for the Road, Battleground, Sometimes They Come Back, Children of the Corn, and The Man Who Loved Flowers. Thanks to The Green Mile and Hearts in Atlantis, I realize that not every Stephen King reader may be a horror fan, but for those who are, I highly, highly recommend this book!

3. Great collection. - I read this a while ago. Back in August I watched a film called the game. It reminded me of something I couldn’t put my finger on, but now after reading Night Shift a second time, I remember now. It reminded me of the short story Quitters Inc. which is One of the stories featured in this collection.

4. It changed my life - I was years old when I first read this book given to me by my years old brother. It is from the completion of this book, I decided to become a writer. I wanted to read everything in site. Till this day, Stephen King remains one of my top authors. His writing skills are like no other! Read this Book!

5. A great book - The stories in this book are all amazing, but Jerusalem's Lot! Is in my opinion one of the best short stories ever! A masterpiece in horror. I will never get those visions from that story out of my head, and it even drove me to become a writer myself. Stephen King is a legend in our time. We are blessed to have his imagination at our fingertips.

1. Extremely disappointed - This book had a great premise, great story, great plot UP UNTIL AFTER THE CLIMAX. After the climax, this book read like the author’s thinly veiled fetish. Sick, twisted, and disgusting. There really isn’t anything to say good about the end. Pretty sure the main villian is a self insert. My god, very disgusting.

2. Slow start but MAN what an ending!!! - I had a hard time getting into this book at first… but once I was in the meat of it.. captivating. Could not put it down!! You’ll hang on every word. Not for the faint of heart. Definitely descriptive and grotesque, but you feel as if you’re in it with the characters!

3. I wish I could unread this - I get that this book is horror, and I’ve read Stephen King and Dean Koontz. But this. This set off every single trigger I have. I wanted was a hilarious romp where Towanda finds and kills vampires, like if Buffy went to the country club. What I got was a lot of weak women who acted far too late, in my opinion. TW: kidnapping, assault, rape, murder, gaslighting.
2021-11-01
4. Woman-hating Book - If you think that all women are weak and foolish, this book is for you. All six of the main female characters are portrayed as living meaningless, shallow lives with no ability to think or do for themselves. Their decisions are so incredibly nonsensical, the reader is left wondering if the author has ever met or spoken to an actual woman. I read this book only because it was the only reading material I had on a long airplane trip. Pass this one up if you don’t want to support misogynistic writing that demeans women.

5. Tim Burton Meets House wife - This book was surprisingly good! There were times I really felt like it dragged, but I’m glad I stuck with it and held on until the end. I read it in about two days. I really imagine a motion picture of this being a Tim burton type. There were instances in the book that I should’ve been shocked, but I laughed instead. I felt like the author did an excellent job creating the characters, but I feel like the title is a little misleading. There is a book club, but it doesn’t really focus on these people, and when I was reading, I was expecting the gossip circles that met every week and were super nosy. You get that somewhat, but it wasn’t as developed as I had expected it to be. I was also a little disappointed In the solution. He built up this villain so well, and the demise wasn’t as exciting as I expected it to be. I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to spoil the book. These are slightly nit picky things, but All in all, I recommend it. You won’t be able to put this down!

6. Hilariously creepy with terrific characters! - I absolutely loved this book! As a mom, wife and lifelong fan of anything vampires, the colorful cast of characters is truly appreciated. As I read this book, I could imagine it being adapted to the screen and even pictured actors for every main role. I finished it in a day because I could not put it down. So glad I discovered the brilliant writing of Grady Hendrix and will be reading everything he’s done!

1. Mixed - Pros: love the concept. a big nostalgia pop. this can definitely be a movie, don’t know about a tv show. enjoyed the mystery and misdirections. definitely a page turner Cons: -no real threats, just imagined threats. How about actually killing some of the “final girls” as oppose to imagining if they died and finding out later they didn’t? -reduce the travel or include the real threats into the travel. -even though this is a nostalgia pop, you gotta have some original stuff in here like come up with a new way to “decode”. Conclusion: I enjoyed reading it but, I was let down as I was reading it and reached the ending. It’s like watching a great movie trailer to then be let down when you watch the movie. I probably hyped it up too much in my mind or he was constrained by the logistics of how these “murders” could’ve happened. Nevertheless, I’m hoping the adaptation can be better.

2. Wow, just wow! - I COULDN’T STOP READING! If I could give more than stars I would! By far the best thing I’ve read this year, and it’s going to take a lot to beat it in my book! I personally am a Horror geek but you definitely don’t have to be to enjoy this book. I’m an avid reader but I can honestly say I’ve never finished a book this fast in my life, well freakin’ done!

3. About women but not FOR women - Intriguing as the concept of this book is, the plot is fueled by re-victimizing women who still haven’t healed from their first nightmares come to life. It features, if not favors, victim blaming and serves to belittle the protagonist at every turn in some long and unconvincing attempt at showing her development. The main characters in this book are subjected to physical and emotional pain from start to finish with the “twist” only supporting the narrative that women are weak, easily manipulated and only exist to serve a man’s most likely sadistic - but at the very least narcissistic - purpose. If you’re interested in being offended as a woman or on behalf of all women, this book is for you. If you only care that this book tries to be as meta as the Scream movie franchise and not the deeper meaning of what this author is supporting, this book is also for you. While the book is entertaining in a few parts and the writing is decent, I still would not recommend this book.

1. A haunting tale of grief and horror - I really liked Grady Hendrix’s How to sell a haunted house. This is the second book that I read by the author. The themes of grief , horror and family weaved together into a haunting tale. I will admit that I had to take a break before I finished it. The puppet was a bit scarier than I imagined but that is a testament to Hendrix’s writing. Can’t wait to read his next book.

2. Crazy and at times I wanted to laugh at the ridiculousness but is also REALLY good - This book is so ridiculous I often felt on the verge of laughing but the characters are well written and even though I found the subject to be so ridiculous it also had a very real aspect to it. The humanity and complex emotions/relationships were woven into a theatric and insane story that made the whole book work. And, it worked well. A lot happened and just when it started to feel like it would become too much, it didn’t. I didn’t expect to feel sad. I didn’t expect to feel happy or concerned. I didn’t expect to care. As crazy as I feel writing this, I am. I don’t even care for horror books and I’m shocked to rate this book at out of . It’s really, really good.

1. Great - As mentioned from previous reviews, this book has its jokes. When things start to get creepy or deeper into the plot the characters are always cracking a joke which keeps things lighthearted for people who get spooked easily. Very easy to read and I personally enjoyed how direct it is vs a book with adjectives about a character and their behavior.

2. Great Story and Writing - This is a great book. The story is pleasantly straight forward in that the author didn’t feel the need to tell it from the perspective of a thousand different characters, while also original and creative. The voice she gives the narrator is relatable and appropriately humorous at times. Very easy reading.

1. A whole lot of nonsense - Like many, I read this book after watching the Netflix series. I was intrigued by Stephen King’s praise for the author and the first few chapters were good. Soon though the story just devolved into nonsense. Craig, the main character keeps making dumb decisions, while tolerating more and more absurd demands from the consultant, far beyond whatever rational person would tolerate. The consultant is this all-powerful and strange creature that knows everything and can do anything anytime and anywhere. How can you enjoy a story where the protagonist makes stupid decisions, and the antagonist can do literally anything and is bound by no rules whatsoever? All of this, and the ending explains absolutely nothing and nothing is really resolved. Fortunately, by the end I was so tired of the characters that I didn’t care about any of it and was just happy to be able to put the book away.

2. Weak ending - I got this to read because I saw the show on Amazon Prime and I thought the book might be fun and interesting like the show. This book is horror and very disturbing at times. That’s fine, except there’s no real conclusion the end. It just kind of it ends without any real resolution or climax. After experiencing all of this fear and terror, you expect a big payoff at the end, where the heroes of the story defeat the bad guy. That doesn’t happen… It just kind of ends.

1. Ending could use some work - The build-up to the end was typical King. Well-written, first person story with flashbacks and a good grasp of ancient books, symbolism and rites.
The clues, however obvious, led to a revival of the dead wife and son. Which would have been a conclusion even more (dare I say) electrifying than the actual ending, which was more fantasy than horror.
This was the second SK book in years. But a week ago, I read a blurb about Fairy Tail, and that kind of novel appealed. I snarfed it up as quickly as my everyday tasks would allow.
When I told my sister, who is a die-hard SK fan and preorders all of his books, how much I like it, and was thinking about Revival, she said it was not a favorite of her, and for the same reason - didn’t like the ending. I ceased reading King many years ago, along with Dean Koontz. However, I cut my genre teeth on Poe, Lovecraft, with some Bradbury thrown in.
But by the time I discovered modern (and not-so modern) mystery novels, I was hooked on the characters, the plots, unraveling clues and red herrings, and sometimes making that leap of cognition to the “Who” became addictive. Less so, in TV because then you can use intuition by watching faces and expressions.

2. The Hook that Brought Me Back - This book was a random read that turned out to be the hook that reeled me back into the arms Stephen King in my Adulthood. This book has no comfort to give. This is King at his best Lovecraftian. King takes us on a journey of existential terror, and much like Pet Semetary, provides us with an intimate look at humanity grappling with agony, the trauma that comes from experiencing the agony, and the huge impact our coping methods have on our humanity— Whether it be through suicide, therapy, drugs, or trying to become a God…Death is still always patiently waiting at the end of that tunnel, and we all share that same sense of dread when thinking about it. The book ultimately ends with the reader forced to consider, “What if our collective dread is % justified?”

3. Nostalgic Afterlife - I was drawn to pick up this book because of its religious themes and characters. I was pleasantly surprised to stumble into a lovecraftian fabrication of life, death, and what comes after. Its strong sense of nostalgia and fluid passing of time had me emotionally gazing into my own past as I flipped through the pages. This was my first King novel. It wont be my last.

4. A Gripping Story, A King Ending - King is famously known for his ability to weave intricate story lines with gritty detail, and he does not fall short in regard to ‘Revival’. A strong starting narrative develops an instant connection with the speaker and forces you to care for him. His journey is long and arduous, but it is the reoccurring appearances of his childhood pastor throughout his life that forges his path. Prepare to enjoy a tale that questions the very notion of reality, religion, and relief after death, but don’t expect numerous cliffhangers in transitions. The story itself is a wonderful work of fiction, but doesn’t quite match his previous novels that grip you so hard you find yourself hours past your perceived time. While it is not a constant attack on your psyche, it is a very well crafted piece you will ultimately enjoy.

5. Scarrrry!!! - Very scary it gives life to all of my wondering I do at am about life and death and the meaning of it all. As I read I could picture every scene. It scared me to death and back. Great writer and story teller that Stephen King is. I love his words and always will. Keep em coming scare master!!

6. I Feel Ripped Off - I will believe this book was written by Stephen King AFTER you have convinced me my head is a pumpkin. I lied. I wouldn’t believe you even then. It is clearly written by a person who has studied and mastered the mechanics of prose, how to put very many words together in a way that makes them seem to make sense together, to contribute to the rendering of a story. The author, however, absolutely fails to impress upon the reader even the slightest sense of the suspense the author imagines is oozing from the pages of this book, fails to create any remote sense of danger except for . pages at the very end - long after all interest in the story has been lost and the only ones still reading are those with a compulsion to finish what they started - and fails to illustrate what is suppose to be a moral conundrum but actually turns out to be a preachy fixation on the part of the star of the story that is hard to get a grip on. I bought a book by the author of “It”, “The Stand”, and “The Shining”. What I got was a book by his nephew who is learning to write and hasn’t the backbone to get started the way his uncle did. I am angry and sorely disappointed.

7. Dark - This is perhaps the darkest of Stephen King's works so far. Unlike many of his works this one ends on a note of fatalistic resignation. Not knowing what religious beliefs he holds - if any - I find myself wondering whether this is a reflection of his own hopelessness. King's writing almost always has a point to it; I'm not sure I know or am comfortable with his point here, or if there is one; hopefully time and reflection will reveal that to me, but this book leaves me with a sadness I have not felt with other works of his that I have read, perhaps because there's no real resolution. For anyone who is a Stephen King fan (and I am), this book will not disappoint. But it raises more questions than it answers, and maybe that is the point.

8. Awesome! By - The basic ingredient is / Frankenstein & / Lovecraft. Laced with a glaze of religion & science taste. Cooked on high, then simmered a bit, & served with a heaping helping of gratitude. & now I must find the recipe immortality! I can c y some reviewers thought this was depressing. I loved it though & am even more greatful every day of my life. The memory of this story will haunt me a long time, even after I die I think.

9. And the hits just keep on coming - As an avid Stephen King fan, and owner of all of his books in hardback, I am very pleased with this latest masterpiece. I am disappointed that it took me far too long to finally finish reading, but it had very little to do with the contents and far too much to do with real life interruptions.
I will forever regret that I didn't have the guts to walk through those spider decorated gates in Bangor back in the early 's to get my copy of The Stand autographed. But after all it was Halloween and I was more than just a little freaked out. Mr King will always be my favorite author and in many ways that "pusher man" who always provides just the right drug. "Goddamn the Pusher Man..."

10. Revival - I have been a Stephen King fan since he wrote his first novels. I feel his latest works are nowhere near the quality of his earlier works. Revival is a compelling story, but has a clear anti Christian bias from page one until the end. The book has a theme of nihilism and utter hopelessness. The horrible bleak ending is quite possibly the most disturbing climax King has ever written. Rather than being entertained, the reader feel sorry for king and wonder if he is this barren and hopeless in his real life.

11. A compelling tale - This wasn't the roller coaster ride 'Mr. Mercedes' was but was still a good read. The question of where we go when we die is the main one here. With a very careful look at religion and what it means on a personal level. Questions were asked, and they leave you wondering about your own mortality and faith. More of a 'great tragedy' than thriller or mystery, it makes me question my own beliefs.

12. Revival - Not his best work. I still love to read his books and will always buy and do so. My sister is the one that got me into reading his work and with every book I read she is still with me. So keep on writing and I will keep on reading.
You will always be the best. The greatest, and my favorite. Thank you,
Glenda

13. As always...could not put it down - I find very few authors who never disappoint. Stephen King has always been one and with Revival he stays on top. King puts you right there with the characters, using his unfailing ability to present his readers with the perfect amount of detail to capture you and take you right along for the full ride. I absolutely HAD to know the ending, but then was bummed it was over.

14. Fantastic novel! - I purchased this novel the day it was released and began reading immediately. I read the first chapter, and put the book down. For some reason I wasn't hooked. Just a couple days ago I decided to start the book over and force myself to read past the first chapter and boy am I glad I did. I read all pages in just two days. I often find myself doing that with King's work. By the end, I felt exhausted and frightened. This novel really took a toll on me, as I felt like I was a part of it. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for an amazing read! Thank you Stephen King. I have no idea how you do it, I'm just glad you do!

15. Boooooring...... - I think this book was made for people of Stephen King's generation or older. Too many references which a lot of people may not understand and too many useless details just to fill up space. The book was actually intriguing halfway through, but then kinda went all over the place. New characters were introduced (or reintroduced) and the book had no real sequence. I would say don't read this unless it was given to you by a friend. The only real constructive use of this book would be if you needed something to stimulate your mind in order to fall asleep.

1. Entertaining and to the point - This story quickly pulls you in and doesn't waist your time. It's entertaining and to the point, without the over descriptive fluff so common in most horror books. I wanted to give this stars, unfortunately the ending felt rushed and over simplified. That being said, it's worth the read and fun until the end.

1. strange indeed - Most of the stories were only so so, I was hoping for better. In Rain, I was distracted by the authors’ snipes at the President, stereotyping, politics and other juvenile comments: “R is for reverse, D is for drive’’...cute. Hope you continue to grow as a writer and drop the cheap shots.

1. Disturbing and Frightening - The imagery in this story is extremely disturbing and really paints a picture in the readers mind of just how awful the experience is on the island with the group of boys. A lot of metaphors and flashbacks that seem a little too long and out of place at times but nevertheless, it was a interesting and intriguing read. Not for the faint of heart or easily disturbed. The newspaper articles and interviews throughout the chapters bring a whole different layer to the story which is really captivating.

2. disgustingly gruesome and holds you by the balls - this book is by far one of the most disgusting body horror novels i’ve ever read, ESPECIALLY past the second part. i applaud Cutter, because he had me needed to take breaks, and as someone with a stomach of steel for these kinds of things, that’s a rarity. bravo

3. READ THIS AUTHOR! - Smart, terrifying, engaging. I never write reviews and took a wild chance on this author. I am a staunch Stephen King fan and find it hard to discover authors that match him. Well, I have now. I’m hooked and will be devouring each and every one of his books. His use of words in describing and creating sheer terror is almost unrivaled. No word is reused. He also has a way of eerily painting a sweetness and accuracy to his characters that is an unexpected balance to the evil. Grips you right from the beginning and doesn’t let go. Just like the worms. Highly recommend.

4. Great Fun! - I tend to read memoirs but felt like mixing it up a bit. The reviews looked promising so I chose The Troop and I’m certainly glad I did. Completely compelling right from the start and difficult to put down, I devoured this book with a hunger much like the afflicted herein. The author seems to relish painting gruesome pictures and creating an overwhelming sense of dread. The character development of these young men is truly a thing of grotesque beauty. I truly enjoyed this book. I must also comment on the reviews that highlight “animal cruelty”: SPOILER ALERT - Although the kitten and the turtle portions were certainly gruesome, I felt they were an excellent technique to distinguish key character traits. They felt necessary in character development and not at all gratuitous. The kitten truly brought that vile character to life and I found myself weeping with the boys at the idea of killing something to stay alive. This book would make a great movie and would require some strong actors to truly convey the emotion behind the madness. I highly recommend this book.

5. Very disappointing - This book started off very strong with suspense and drama and then slowly evolved into a disgusting novel. The kids in this story, or true horrors, and the fact that they would all be associated is ridiculous. I hate animal cruelty and this book accentuated it. I wasn’t scared at all throughout this book, but definitely disgusted and disappointed.

6. Rekindled - I was in a reading slump for about a year and a half but this book has rekindled my fire. The incredibly morbid detail this book goes into is just so cleverly handled. I loved this book and the dynamic between the five scout boys. This is a book I would read again because I’m sure I missed some details that Mr. Cutter has so painstakingly placed to bring about a full picture for this adrenaline rush of a ride.

7. Must read for horror lovers - I’m a big Stephen King fan and this book has the same pull you in vibe as his does. I was pulled in from the start of the book even with the feeling of some messed up and gory things were going to happen. I just had to keep reading while every bit of hope for the main characters slowly seeped away. Very well written and exciting story making me a new fan.

8. Terrified - I didn’t eat for days honestly, paranoid is too mild a term but Jesus it was something. I was fine until the gorilla experiment and it all just sunk in. Never going to read this book again for fear of...the book I guess. The best horror book I’ve ever read, couldn’t put it down even when I wanted to throw up or cry. I didn’t know this book was about Insert said creature or I wouldn’t have read it. Good job

9. Truly Amazing! - Best book I've read in a long time. Bought it in paperback; but, felt compelled to come on here and leave a review, as well. Couldn't put this book down. Kept looking down at my skin to make sure nothing was moving underneath. Story is told very well. Read the last pages this morning in one sitting. Looking forward to more from this author! Also, I hope to God they turn this into a movie. It would be great to see on the big screen.

10. Yuck - I grew up loving horror movies and novels. While the story and characters were very well done; I found the "gross out" factor, gratuitous. It was like watching a car wreck, you don't want to look, but you do.
Not sure I'll buy another of Mr Cutter's novels. Some things are better left to the reader's imagination. Not sure I'll ever be able to garden again without a Tyvek suit!

11. Can't put it down! - Extremely intoxicating. I was reading this at work when I realized I hadn't blinked because my eyes were dry and throbbing from staring at the screen so hard and my heart was pounding in my chest. I'm / of the way through and although it's probably taboo to write a review before finishing, but I felt it was necessary. If possible, this review will be edited to stars upon the completion as long as the ending doesn't fall flat.
