1. Magnificent - Magnificent, I drank in every word. I wish I could sit at the feet of Robin Wall Kimerer and listen to her stories first hand, but sadly I can’t so this book at least will suffice, and it feels through the pages that I am sitting with her, learning from her and hearing her voice. Rich and poetic - this book will change the way you view the world. It is magnificent.

2. Breathtaking imagery - One of the most beautifully written love letters to nature I’ve ever read. It was recommended to me by a friend. Once I started reading I thirsted for it at the start of each day. I have been buying up every copy I find and sharing it with my friends who love the earth and plants as much as I do. Thank you Robin.

3. Share. - A revealing, insightful, caring, necessary book of philosophies and positive information about the importance of holding nature's gifts close to your heart in every aspect of your conscious life. Every paragraph, every story, every philosophy, and every intention was deliberately written to reciprocate organic food for thought to the open reader. A gorgeously written and earnest novel that I recommend for everyone :)

4. A Tender Textbook - From personal exemplar essays of bringing up children to love and care for the land, extending out to the history of clearcutting vast old growth forests and back to saving salamanders the author is a brilliant storyteller with the ability to draw you into the lessons she teaches, the trial and error attempts of many to clean up the acts of those who use and abuse the gifts of the earth, and give hope to the disenfranchised people and ecological permaculture of a healthier earth. This book left me breathless and speechless. Having lived the greater part of the decade in the shadow of Lake Onondaga, I can feel as well as see this ecological terrorism. I am moved by Dr. Kimmerer’s call for reciprocity, for us to quiet our minds to learn lessons lost in grief and greediness. This book had me laughing and crying, almost at the same time. I was very moved, and personally challenged by it. It is not a read it all at once Book, but one than needs to be read in chunks to fully comprehend it. Highly recommended /

1. Timely - This book provides a wonderful account of Alexander von Humboldt, a scientist who few know much about, but who’s intellectual legacy in ecosystems thinking that we are all well aware of. It’s well written and conveys very effectively how Humboldt’s life and ideas impacted key environmental thinkers and activists who in turn produced works that have had significant impact right up to the present day. A great read!

1. Some hyperbole - This book was interesting in parts, but I found many discrepancies in some of the "facts" he reports. The "fact" that they can't keep certain snake antivenin at the house because it doesn't keep. In fact, that particular antivenin is good for at least months if kept refrigerated.
Also, at one point he mentions wild elephants holding on to other elephant's tails. This is a behavior never seen in wild elephants....it's a trained behavior used by circus elephants.
I just felt many of the experiences related in this book were exaggerated ....many just did not make sense!

2. Such a beautiful book... - ...so touching and true and real. Please honor this book and this species by not attending circuses, zoos or anything where animals that should be free and wild are kept in cages. See PAWS, Performing Animals Welfare Society, go to their website and see what they are doing to rescue elephants and other species and help them in their cause. Bless you.

3. The Elephant Whisperer - Bravo....what an inspirational read! I had the opportunity to live in South Africa for a year & visited Umfolozi game reserve & many others & developed a true love of elephants myself. I especially enjoyed Lawrence taking the reader into the meeting houses of the Chiefs and explaining the Zululand culture....so interesting! What an amazing man Lawrence Anthony is...a true hero for African wildlife.

4. The Elephant Whisperer - Compelling, tender, insightful, with sprinkles of humor. If you have any compassion toward animals this is a "must read" for you. This intimate recount of Lawrence Anthony's efforts to establish an African refuge will take you through all the emotions you have -- and more. From the first page to the last, it will be difficult to put this book down.

5. The Elephant Whisperer - I couldn't put this down! I agree with another review, book my flight, I'm ready to go! I have a special place in my heart for all animals, but Elephants in particular. I was captivated by his descriptions of the habits and behaviors of these giants. What a wonderful read. If only I could make such a contribution to the world in such a subtle but outlandish way. I have always wanted to visit this part of the world, now more than ever. Well done Lawrence, rest in peace!

6. The Elephant Whisperer - A warm, wonderful, endearing story of a very special gentleman, and his wife. A look into a part of the world I will probably never get to see, but after this book,I wanted to leave on the next plane to Thula Thula. It was explained to me by a friend that did go there, that the publisher in Europe did not release it in the USA...I was so glad to see that you had book! PS. mr. Publisher...Americans would love this...please share it with the world!

1. What enjoyment I had reading your novel - I enjoyed reading your novel very much out was very in detain in the discriptions and experiment details that once I started reading it it starting becoming that much more interesting that I count put it down it took me three to four days to read since I read it in between my day dreams and my work habits that it was on my mind almost every second this book was suggested on Facebook from one of my contacts that I have on my Facebook friends all they said was they read it so I'm saying I read it and would like to read more by this author in the future it had a firm grip on the reader from begging to end not like one of those books that's starts of boring from the begging and ends up being boring at the end the middle is a whole mother story but my favorite parto of f this book was the part when you were explaining the diversity side of extinction how the effects aren't just man made but also made by nature or a introduced species it was that good I'm glad to have payed for this book is rather have found it in the library but paying for it through iTunes means I can refer to it if I choose to for any referance to depicted references that I may look forward to in the future or even past present ordeals hahahaha but it was good I liked it a lot two thumbs

2. Interesting but Disconnected Stories - The author's experiences and stories are all interesting and educational but were not tied together in a way that showed relationships or deeper themes. While the conclusion is obvious (we need to be better stewards of the planet), the reader is left with a certain disconnectedness. Maybe an expanded e can tie things together better.

3. Important read for understanding what humans are up to - This book is engrossing from the start and never let's up. The writer has extensively researched the subject matter and does a great job of jumping between history and current day issues regarding how large extinctions have and are happening on the planet. If you have trouble understanding what climate change is or want to engage deniers more intelligently then this book is a mist read. Understanding the thoroughness that scientists have put unto making their findings makes arguments against them pale. It requires a book like this to scratch the surface of what people are talking about when it comes to climate change.

4. Fascinating! - This is an important book for anyone interested in the past and future of human existence. Shouldn't we all? Elizabeth Kolbert scientific writing is very clear, but also entertaining. I never thought that a book about bones and dying species would keep me reading as if it were a thriller. Actually, the Sixth Extinction is a thriller since it deals with our own survival. This book should be required reading in high school or college. Well done, Ms. Kolbert.

5. Myths of the Ancients - The fraud is ever perpetuated that since one is incompetent to live one's life morally, one must be guided, thru violence as necessary, to a authoritarian's mandate. Such it is with this nihilistic tour de coucou .. wherein the dogma of conformity (deformity?) is the credo of Cossacks

1. The World Unknown - Ed Yong delivers another Science and Nature entry off the heels of his previous masterpiece. Yong is perhaps the best contemporary scientific writer. He is unrivaled in his ability to distill down the most complex topics for the everyone without devaluing the actual scientific process. His narrative style layered on gives this one the read of an existentialist treatise paired with biology. In this one the get introduced to my new favorite word Umwelten. A concept that we don’t just get introduced to but earn a micro-masters degree in by completing this tome. Umwelten, in a sense is the multiverse of sensory experiences across the spectrum of living creatures. Those sensory divergences underscore the gulf between species but how each experience the physical world. Another interesting takeaway is how traces a thread between feedback loops between the senses and evolutionary outcomes. In one hand, we learn about how sensory traits impact selection and ultimately outward evolutionary patterns. On the other hand, he shows us how the pandemic shutdowns demonstrated how modern life impacts the sensory experiences of animals and humans alike. All of the detail Yong shares emphasizes just how immense our world is and make for a massive read. One that I hope gets paired with a Discovery Channel style documentary that pulls in the video footage and visuals to illustrate in real time some of the beautifully descriptive paragraphs we get of sensory experiences. Such a pairing may help remove the anthropomorphism we place on our surrounding world and creatures when the Umwelten outside of our own resemble nothing of the sort.

2. My new favorite book - I think this is my favorite book ever. It’s fascinating start to finish and I enjoy the author’s writing style. Even though it is nonfiction it’s hard to put down. I recommend it to family and friends regularly and can’t help sharing interesting tidbits I’ve learned from my reading.

1. Trooper: the heartwarming story of the Bobcat who became part of my family - Heartwarming is the best description for this beautiful tale of two souls destined to share a powerful journey on this plane. I am so glad it was shared through this medium, allowing others to "experience " the journey, It brought joy into my life to feel the compassion of all of the main souls, including the gentle spirit of Little Brother. I started with a purchased ebook and fell in love with it early and had to have a hands-on text copy for my own library. And to share with family members.
Again, my thanks for this treasure.

Thank you for capturing so perfectly the resounding sadness and let loss to the heartwarming outpouring of help.

1. First and not my last - This was the first Master-of-the-mundane John McPhee book I read and from the first story, I was hooked on JM. I quote a NYT review of JM in the previous sentence, so I hope it is not taken the wrong way. I have read almost every book, and this is still my favorite, though the series on Geology is a very close second.

2. Brilliant read for anyone interested natural systems and our impact upon them. - This book is the first I've ever read by McPhee after hearing him speak on a NPR story. His ability to use a spectrum of individual human stories balanced with extreme macro scale comprehension of complex natural systems is a masterful thing to enjoy as a reader and makes the pages fly by as if you are along side him experiencing and meeting his subjects. Being someone who works largely in documentary film and loves exploring nature, McPhee is now my must have author on my bookshelf (iBook).

1. Incredible Book - The way the book is written is more like you are having a conversation with Steve himself. I love Steve and his values towards hunting and the outdoors. There is an excellent balance of the history of the American Buffalo intertwined with Steve’s personal story. Absolutely love this book.

1. She lost me when she said the War of was about control of the beaver trade. It was not! - When you’re reading a book and the author makes a statement that is howlingly false it destroys any credibility for the rest of the book. I’ve read a lot of history. I’ve never seen any historian even mention the fur trade when discussing the War of much less call it a primary factor. What else in this book is simply wrong.

1. Courage on a grand scale - This story encompasses three of my favorite things : biography , horses , and the truth . Although this story has been told previously but in a filtered light, this rendition is more relatable . In the authors own words she was an “ ordinary woman living and extraordinary life “ .

1. Hard to unsee - This was a tough read for me and not due to its length or the subject that this book is about. I found myself distracted by how this book was written. I would say % of this book is written in a pattern of three! I’m not sure if this is a stylistic choice or done out of ignorance but whatever it may be, it drove me crazy! The length of the book would have definitely been less than pages if the editor would have caught on to this. “Blah blah blah, blah blah blah, and blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah, blah blah, because blah blah technology.” It is easy to understand the message yet the subject is beaten into the forefront of our awareness in this endless stream of analogies, metaphors, and allegorical associations that are at best a reach.

2. How to make $. Disappear. - Wow, this starts out with interesting but obvious observations, but then it gets so unfocused and repetitive that you suspect it is going nowhere. The observations are not those of the author but rather a jumble of facts and observations made by other researchers on varying topics. It’s like a conversation at a cocktail party that slowly slips into a rambling monologue, and you realize this person is nuts. I am half way thru, but I may have to put this book down and cut my losses.

1. American Wolf - A moving and informative account of the animals, people and issues involving the Yellowstone wolves. Although certainly “pro wolf”, the author presents opposing views and even goes to great effort to humanize one of the hunters involved. The author succinctly explains the complexities, politics, and tensions between human interests, while also grippingly involving the reader in the lives of the wolves. Both heartbreaking and uplifting!

2. Fascinating - At times as I read this fascinating non-fiction story, I had to remind myself that it was not a novel. This is a great tale (although true) of a beautiful wolf and a great man who lived and studied this wolf and its ancestors in the wilds of Yellowstone. I learned to love the wolves that were gloriously featured and the men and women who made the introduction of the wolf in Yellowstone come to a successful outcome.

1. Great book - I really enjoyed this book, and I learned a lot about just how incredible octopuses (and cephalopods in general) are. The author’s writing style was very interesting, and I was engaged throughout. My only criticism is that some points felt like more of a biography than a science book. Great read nonetheless!
2019-03-14
2. Soul of an Octopus - I do not recommend this book. I wanted it to be good, as i love octopuses, and I have a background in fisheries science. But nothing drew me in. Literarily speaking it is incredibly bland. The science content is a compilation of plenty of quips about what the octopus may be feeling, but with little cohesive empirical evidence to back up the author's observations. It felt incomplete. Bored with the author's personal journey, I found myself wading through this book poking around for and finding some interesting insights, but never finding what the title promised.
2016-07-01
3. A good memoir-style story - Not quite what I expected, but I didn't do much research before reading. I wanted more crunchy science bits and less personal journey; also more on the philosophy and science of consciousness, both human and octopus. For a general audience looking for a good personal story from an excellent writer, this is a five-star book. Just not for me.

1. Kafka's African Memoir - Sapolsky's youthful adventures in Africa comprise a medley of stories reminiscent of the absurdity of Kafka and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The memoir provides a compelling glimpse into Africa at an striking historical instant. Pleasantly surprising, witty and poignant A Primate's Memoir is the best memoir I have ever read.

2. Luv Baboons - Poignant, personal, infuriating, touching, and hilarious. Sapolsky, in the conversational style of a campfire storyteller, gives readers an unvarnished look at the beauty and simple majesty of baboons alongside the scandalous, sometimes funny, sometimes deadly corruption of humans. Readers will fall in love with the dysfunctional family of baboons, inevitably finding parallels in their own community of friends and family, and marvel at Sapolsky's courage and foolishness as he inserts himself in the most adventurous, dangerous political situations in unstable Africa.

1. Good follow up - This was a very good follow up to "Cradle to Cradle". Although I thought the distribution of information was a bit uneven, ie long winded and repetitive in some areas and border line superficial in other parts. Still, very informative. However, if you've ever listed to a lecture by bill McDonough you probably will not get very much additional insight.

1. Expect the unexpected - Trees climbing mountains. Lizards evolving in weeks and months to withstand hurricanes. Grizzly bears abandoning salmon for berries. Thor Hanson brings an insatiable curiosity, along with a healthy dose of storytelling and humor, to the subject of how life is adapting, in real time, to a changing planet. It’s fascinating. And it’s made me realize that I’d better throw out the “expected range” advice in all of my older birding books. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the world around us.
