1. A Good Read, But Falls A Little Short of its Goal - In his introduction, Prothero rails against the overall lack of religious literacy in modern America. Post-/ rhetoric has reduced Islam to a religion of peace, or a religion of terror; Americans have no idea about the basics of Confucianism or Taoism. Because of this, Prothero offers up a text that provides a basic insight into the world's major religions. He cleverly presents each religion through four questions, providing insight into what each feels to be the essential issue and the proposed solution. In this regard, the book provides a very lucid format for its discussion. I began the book with high hopes of better understanding each religion and a serious discussion of the need for greater understanding in America of the planet's religious diversity. I believe that Prothero succeeds in this attempt for the most part. However, I think it succeeds mostly as a populist book, not a serious challenge to our perspectives as Americans. While he rails against the New Agey sentiments of "God is one" as well as the lack of religious understanding of our world leaders in his opening, the defiant tone quickly escapes the text. Some of the chapters feel a little bit strung together, packed with info that doesn't necessarily hang together in a coherent flow. On the very positive side, however, he succeeds in injecting a sly sense of humor to the discussion that is very refreshing. Overall, I would highly recommend this book; the content and style was not as strong as I thought it would be based on the strength of the intro. I am currently reading his "Religious Literacy," which is equally well-written, and also recommended.

1. No audio, few features - This enhanced version does not have the synchronized audio book. You'll think you are getting it, but you only get a very short video, a simple quiz, a short essay, and a simple collage course outline for the extra $. Go to the App Store and search the same title for the same money, and get the audio book included. It's pretty sneaky of these guys to leave it out of the iBook version, but leave it in the app without making that clear. If you want an iBook, just buy the basic version.

1. True Essesnce of Hinduism!!!! - I have read this book and personally cherished reading it. Swami Mukundanandaji has beautifully summarized the concept of Hinduism and made it accessible to everyone. The best part of the book is the explanation on why we do certain traditions and the significance behind them. Growing up in a Hindu family, I have always followed certain traditions just because everyone was doing it. After reading this book, I have a very good understanding on the traditions and also appreciate the logic behind it. Definitely brought in a new perspective for me and a new meaning to religion.

2. Excellent book for all ages!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - It is one of the best books that I ever read.
After reading this books I have realized that, even though I am a Hindu, I do not know much about Hinduism. The author explains it in a simple and effective way that even a layman can understand it. It has the details like Goal of human life, Developing our relationship with God, Importance of self effort, Importance of the Guru, the importance of the mind in our daily life and much more. What I like most is the topic 'How to practice devotion daily' that I never read in any other book. It is so simple to practice in daily routine, including meditation which will help us to focus our mind on God.

3. A gem that I came across... - Hinduism in my opinion is a vast field and one can get lost on where to even start. However, I find that the author of this book has conveyed the deep concepts and knowledge that one would want to know about hinduism in succinct, simple terms that elucidate the essence of hinduism. The author discusses topics such as: the nature of the self, the nature of God, surrender to God, the importance of the mind, the path of Bhakti among many other topics. The book is thus a fantastic read for both beginners that want to learn more about hinduism as well as for people that are already familiar with hinduism but want to gain a deeper understanding of the concepts without having to read volumes of different texts. I kind of wish I had come across this book earlier when I was taking a class on Asian religions. The book seems to be targeted at all age groups - children and adults. It is simple to comprehend and has got a lot of beautiful colorful illustrations that make the read a very entertaining one for children. Overall, a gem that I came across.

5. Excellent primer on Hinduism - I've had this book for sometime now and finally got around to reading it. Now I understand why it is titled "Essence" of Hinduism and not a "Recap" or "Summary" of Hinduism. The author, Swami Mukundananda, skillfully explains, chapter by chapter, the true "essence" or that critical core of Hinduism that is understood only by comprehensively reading all the Vedic scriptures. He starts by laying the foundation of the scriptures by explaining the significance of "I" when we ask the question "Who am I?" and gently and skillfully guides the reader through the nature of God, role of celestial gods, goal of our life, importance of our will and self-effort in conjunction with God's grace. Swamiji then goes on to explain the importance of a true Guru and why it is important to surrender to a Guru. Having explained the essential concepts, the next section of the book addresses the question of "how?" How do I get on this path? How do I progress on this journey? etc... In this series of chapters, Swamiji again first explains the Vedic concepts and then teaches us how to integrate them into our daily life. The book is well written in a simple, easy to understand manner. Stories taken from the scriptures and from everyday life are used to deepen our understanding of the concepts while beautiful illustrations make it pleasing to read. The book is littered with verses from the scriptures and supplemented with quotes from other world renowned leaders such as Mark Twain, George Bernard Shaw and other great minds of the modern times. While the target audience is clearly children, adults will also find this book very useful. Unless someone has read and understood all the scriptures, adults will also find new concepts discussed in the book such as, 'How do I develop a relationship with God?" or "The importance of finding a true Guru" or the difference between Sadhan Bhakti vs Siddha Bhakti. I highly recommend this book for anyone genuinely interested in learning about Hinduism or the Vedic scriptures.

6. A Priceless Treasure ! - I am amazed thinking on the profoundity of this little book, written by Swami Mukundanandaji !! This book is a Priceless Treasure, containing the Essence of Hinduism, i.e. containing the highest, purest of knowledge of the Eternal Vedas which have been manifested by God Himself for the eternal welfare of all humankind. In this book Swamiji has splendidly discussed the subtlest aspects of the most important subjects such as the nature of soul, the nature of God, our relationship with God, the aim of human life, the need for a Guru (Spiritual Master), the history of Divine Vedas, the various forms of God, the three paths to God-realization, self effort versus destiny, selfless love versus selfish love, the key to attain “Divine Love”-the highest power of God which enslaves the God Himself, the need to purify the mind and many more……….. Explaining each concept with depth as well as in a very simple-easy to understand manner, the big fonts, so many beautiful coloured pictures given in reference to the context make the book quite appealing to all age group.

7. Fall in love with Essence of Hinduism!!! - I was born in a conservative Hindu family, where the elders followed strict rituals and worshipped different Gods in their own styles. Everyone had their own stance on what Hinduism teaches and how we should imbibe its best teachings in our lives. I heard everyone, and then I met many other people who had their own views on the oldest religion. Most people were confused and a few others intrigued. I too was unsure of what Hinduism meant to people like us. But then I was truly blessed to come across this book written by Swami Mukundananda, which has forever made me certain, that Hinduism is the simplest yet profoundly deepest religion in the world. This book is for anyone who wishes to learn the ‘essence of Hinduism’. I first suggest this book to all my Hindu friends and family who will be able to really understand the greatness of this religion and appreciate their fortune. Then of course, I suggest it as a must read for anyone who has the slightest interest in Hinduism and is looking around for a reliable and comprehensive source of ancient spiritual knowledge. This book will dispel all your doubts and apprehensions about Hinduism and make you fall in love with its essence.

8. Great Read .... Highly recommended... - This book is recommended for the people who are in search of true meaning of life. It gives us answers to all those questions which have been always there in the minds searching for actual happiness. The author beautifully explains the reason we are born for and how to achieve our ultimate goal which is attainment of God, the supreme power and not the materialistic world. It teaches us to offer our selfless love to our God and in return seek his divine love forever. It elucidates the Vedic scriptures which are otherwise very complicated to understand and thus proves very useful for people who are trying to understand the philosphy of life and seek spiritual knowledge.
A must read for all age groups and a wonderful gift for kids who have just begun their lives and should be moulded well towards the real goal of human birth.

10. Its not merely a book .......its an experience in itself - I would tell the crux of it, why you should read the book afterall..!!!! BECAUSE its not the book, its an experience in itself. As though the Author has put our, a common man's, experiences in it.
Have you ever wondered what is Rebirth, what is karma, how we have to bear its fruits. READ IT and know it all....

13. Door to enlightening yourself - There is a lot and varying information available on Hinduism. It is confusing to sift through and extract the information that can make your human birth a success. Even if a person is able to hone in on the correct particulars of the Vedic religion, it is beyond the intellectual capacity of any human being to extract the juice and drink it. Essence of Hinduism by Swami Mukundananda ji makes this goal very easy. The book gives the authentic information on the Vedic religion (otherwise referred to as Hinduism) in an easy to understand language for all human beings, from young to the old, regardless of social or religious background. The book is an essential step for every person and family to venture into making their lives worthwhile. The content is very easy to understand and grasp; ideal for family discussion. After reading this book, you will fee lthat a doorway has opened for you into a vast world of treasure to which any wordly treasure will seem pale in comparison.

14. Awesome book on Hinduism - In this book, the author has revealed the oldest religion (Hinduism) of all living religions originating in India. It is also known as Sanatan Dharm (Eternal religion) and Vedic Dharm (religion of Vedas). This book has been written in a simple language and in concise manner which can be understood by all ages. The author has beautifully portrayed the all complex core aspects of Hinduism: Tattvas, Srutis, Smrities, Darshanas, and Bhakti. This book on Hinduism is not meant only for Hindus but for humanity as a whole. This is an excellent source to know all about Hinduism for all generations. This is a MUST KEEP book for every family in the universe.

15. Complete Vedic Pith Packed in Handbook!! - The Book goes by its name—containing the Essence of Hinduism, that has attributed to it a vast galaxy of Scriptural texts divided into four Vedas and hundreds of Upanishads, Puranas, etc. It wonderfully explains various mysterious concepts of the Eastern philosophy such as soul, rebirth, karma, the mind, the art of meditation, concept of Maya and moksha, bhakti yoga, the guru, God, and many more. The striking feature of this book, IMHO, is the simplicity and clarity with which the author elucidates transcendental philosophies which are otherwise of a very esoteric character. That said, the author does not compromise with the authenticity part, corroborating his views with a direct reference from the Vedas and other scriptures. I must say I ended up learning a lot more than I thought I would. Recommended for both—absolute beginners to spirituality and those striving for perfection!

1. Beautiful, Cute Intro to Hindu Deities - I am visiting India for work soon and I've been trying to get a basic understanding of the Hindu deities for fun and to educate my experiences. This book is both beautiful but also an easy intro to the stories and concepts related to each deity. Patel writes his descriptions with a lighthearted humor that I appreciate. I cannot rate it for accuracy, since I'm not an expert, but it enjoyed it and found it helpful.
