1. Essential for Police and all that serve the public - Since I graduated the academy, I was always placed into a "one ranger, one riot" scenario. I knew because of limited resources and back up I needed to make as few enemies as possibe and avoid physical contact to the best of my ability. This book helped explain and point out where I was doing right, what I was doing wrong, and gave me more verbal tools to improve. It is an extremely humbling read when you finish. I realized that my struggles of communication were from bad experiences and lack of leadership, but now I know how to verbally communicate and get people to comply without laying a finger on them. If you struggle with difficult people or finding the right words to say in highly emotional situations, buy this book!

1. Excellent Advice - This little book was outstanding! Its clear directions were a relief to read in a world awash with political correctness. Some may find the idea of rules restricting. I, however, found it edifying. This book is a good source of advice to the writer, whether a beginner or an expert.

1. Love it - I own a hard copy of this book. You are thought that you already know thousands of Spanish words. Then you learn the past tense of commonly used verbs. This is done since you usually talk to people about things that happen in the past. I have bought more than a few Spanish books in my life, and this is my favorite. This book, and a book of Spanish verbs goes a long way.

1. A book worth reading once is worth reading twice (or four times!) - The authors teach you how to read great books like you'll have them for a few days then never see them again--giving you the tools you need to make them your own and to remember them in a year or a decade. This includes learning to read on four different levels: analytically, synthetically, critically, and syntopically (more than one author on the same topic). Once you master the book, practice the techniques in a seminar or in a reading group. It's hard to read great books on your own (they are rarely easy to understand, or they would not be called great). It takes support and a few months to turn these reading techniques into habits.

1. If You’re Writing A Novel — This Should Be The First Book You Read - I’m a fan of Blake Snyder’s “Save The Cat” series, and lo and behold — I also transitioned from writing screenplays to novels — so this book was exactly what I was looking for. Jessica nails it on many levels; there’s so much here to help you craft the best novel possible. I can’t recommend this book enough, and I’ve highlighted it away into oblivion. I’ll be re-reading this for years to come. Thank you Jessica!

1. Interesting book - Interesting look at the use of language in cult like behavior. It not only discusses cults like Jim Jones, Heavens Gate, and the Branch Davidians. But also touches on other groups and movements that you wouldn’t consider to be cults like fitness crazes, social and political movements, gyms, conspiracy theories, diets, religious movements, charity groups. social clubs (even beneficial clubs like Alcoholics Anonymous) which all use Cultish language to hook people in. You’ll learn to recognize such language tricks after reading this book.

2. Defected Cult Members, This One’s for You - I am so thankful to have stumbled across this book only a few weeks after realizing that the fundamentalist Christian group I’d left after years was actually a destructive cult. At a time in my life when I couldn’t find the language to express what I’d been through and how I’d gotten sucked in, the author of this book gave me the words. I highly recommend this to anyone, defected cult members or otherwise.

3. Cultish - Cultish is very informative for people who were not already well versed in the world of cults and mind control. However I found a few pieces of information missing that brings More clarity than the author does. For example, neuroscientists that study the brain have found that certain parts of the brain make you more or less open to believing unproven beliefs depending on their size.

1. Inspiring book about writing - Part of me would like to be a writer, a storyteller. I suspect that ambition arises from the stories my father told when I was a boy, and my love of reading. I live on the threshold of being a bookworm. Which side of the threshold I'm not sure. McPhee talks about his life as a writer and teacher of writing in a manner that can be called entertaining, inspiring, and educational. I have nothing more to ask. He is an author I'd like to know.

1. Wonderful - I’m an English prof, and I own more writing books than I can count. This is one of the funniest, smartest, and useful books I’ve read. This book, I believe anyway, is perfect for writers and profs who are working through manuscripts of their own because Dreyer offers a publisher’s perspective on writing issues and worries that plague advanced writers: All writers make mistakes, and most writers make the same mistakes repeatedly, and you can always look things up. The explanations he gives are memorable because they are funny and smart. So, you may not learn hard and fast grammar rules, but you will get a better sense of how to handle gnarly writing challenges. I read this book cover to cover in one night. And I laughed out loud many times. I appreciated the care that must have gone into modulating the tone of the book and anticipating specific worries that writers have. One gets the feeling they (I am keeping an open mind about “they,” as the text sort of kind of encourages) are talking to a seasoned professional who wants to help you and has nothing to prove. Just good advice and encouragement.
So very glad I found this gem of a book.

2. Fantastic!! - I absolutely adore this. I do. It’s perfectly charming in an unconventional way. I’m both reading the book and listening to the audiobook (also available on iTunes.) Benjamin Dreyer expresses the rules, nonrules, and ettiquette of grammar and language through experiences he has faced as a copyeditor over the years. Rules are explained through experiences and stories. It’s fantastic. I enjoy the narrative that mixes with the lessons as they help me remember what should and should not be said or written. Although, perhaps if Dreyer were to see this review, he would think that my English could use some work. All in all, I find this book highly enjoyable and truly entertaining. Much more than a style manual, it is helpful and hilarious and overly amusing.

1. A fascinating read - I have never been interested in the history of the language I speak regularly. I listened to several of the authors classes on Great Courses and he was very engaging. I decided to buy some books of his. Now he has me thinking of the history of English in way I never have before. Phoenician really as a contributor and re-arranger of the German that English formed from. It’s impressively mind blowing.

2. Entertaining and Illuminating - Finally someone has come up with some theory why English is littered with the word "do" and whay caused the legrndary Great Vowel Shift. I don't know why the author's theory that one of the greatest unfluences on the English's language came from the Welsh (the only ither "do" language in the world!) Oh wait. I know why… English snobbery!!! Anyway, the author should've stopped about / through cuz that's when it started to get boring & I shelved it. But the first half or so is GREAT! I'm reading his book "The Power of Babel" now and it's fascinating! Perfect for amateur linguists who just want the whole mess of the history of language distilled down to its most intrresting parts.

1. Should be more clear - I got this book to learn Irish. It suggests in the description that audio is included to teach the pronunciation of Irish. It is not. It is also not found on TY’s website. In fact, I couldn’t even find a reference to this textbook on their website. Perhaps it was discontinued? If that’s the case, then why did they keep selling on iBooks? Regardless, the book is incomplete without the promised audio tracks.

Still highly relevant for serious money getting in and beyond. It’s money in the bank when you get the actual copy used in money making promotions… or checklists to screen prospects… or how to come up with targeted lists for prospecting safe bets… I don’t know why Bob’s not more famous. 1. The Craft - This book is great for aspiring writers and those who want to know a bit more about Stephen King. As an aspiring writer myself, I found a lot of information in this book quite useful. The information I’ve soaked up will no doubt help me in my writing journey. On Writing is a valuable tool for writers and I highly recommend it.

2. How Stephen King Writes - King describes how he writes, and begins by giving some background into his life, which is an interesting way to start. The best parts of the book are the stories King tells. He’s a great storyteller. I was less interested in his observations about the writing process. Like many successful writers it’s hard for him to remember his general principles may be things that work for him but may not work for others nor may necessarily be useful ways to think about being g a writer.

3. The Science & The Art - Stephen King wrote a book for aspiring and struggling writers but I believe he managed something larger. A book that is as much about the symbiotic relationship between a well lived life and settled work, as it is about writing. The key being that when you design your life to support positive habit building, you will create the space to hone your craft of choice, which naturally feeds satisfaction back into life. To serve writers, he delivers blunt guidance that demystifies the lore of what makes a successful writer. One of the most important bubbles he pops is the idea that creative output comes to us like some violent gust of wind. Inspiration that is supposed to consume you and carry you all the way to some brilliant novel. King distills the real effort down to a craftsperson, discipline, and a toolbox. On top of all of that he shares his life journey in away that is refreshing. This approach underscores how are lives shape us and subsequently what we write about. It’s not just about writing what we know but also leaning into your history to give your work more authenticity. An honesty that the reader will appreciate. Whether you’re a King fan or not, this is a great read about following passions and making a life.

4. Excellent - I read this book for a final essay assignment, and I had so much to highlight. The stories at the beginning were well told and lighthearted, and the seamless segway into the this and that of writing made the topic that much more interesting. King is an excellent writer, and the way he wrote and explained writing, filling the book with stories, and funny comments of his, it was almost as though the book was one of those can’t put it down books. Highly recommend.

5. Generous - That's the word that comes to mind. That is, Stephen King did not have to write this book; it's evident throughout that he did it out of the kindness of his heart, in an effort to truly GIVE BACK to his fans and aspiring writers. For that I'm truly grateful. I took advantage of his generosity and latched onto and analyzed every word, especially the many words intended to motivate, enable, and inspire aspiring writers. Stephen is not only a great teacher, he is a very grateful and inspiring human being who loves his craft passionately, and is brutally honest about what it takes to succeed in the field. I honestly don't know how he could have made this book any better. It is perfect. Thank you, Mr. King.

6. Any Key to King's Writing Mind Is a Gift - Perhaps Stephen King does not do his best describing how he writes to all, but his true gift is storytelling in any sense. For the reviewer who knows him only by his horror tales, he also writes amazing fictional stories that are not scary, nor would they be categorized as "horror" novels. These are probably my favorite, although they do contain some "bizarre" or unexplainable type things - but that is what makes them so appealing. Yet, they are never forgotten for their depth and wisdom. King is a genius with an amazing mind that unravels on paper.

7. For the Lover of the Craft - It doesn't matter so much if you're even a fan of King's magnum opus, if you want real advice, quality advice that you can apply to your own literary pursuits, you've found your book. It's one of those rare gems that surreptitiously teaches you far more than you could ever realize you're actually learning because you're so busy being wildly entertained. 'On Writing' is worth reading, if for no other reason, simply for its wealth of King's personal essays; pieces of nonfiction so funny, so poignant, so deeply moving that I was left wishing King would take the time to publish a memoir or two. It's that good. Really, it is.

8. On writing - The biographical parts including post accident were interesting and enjoyable. The advice on writing not as much, unless you are perhaps a late adolescent boy hoping to follow in this master cranker's footsteps. And he is a master cranker. More power to him. For what it was it was overpriced too

9. A Great Read - Many people always ask the same questions about King, where do you get your ideas? And etc... In On Writing there is a look into the mind of Stephen King, his life, his work, and best of all his thoughts on writing. Anyone who likes his books should read this book. Aspiring writers should also read this. All in all a great read.

1. Fantastic deescalation techniques - I read this by recommendation of several law enforcement friends. Many departments these days employ these techniques as standard training and techniques. It is easily understood from at least an th grade reading level and has great insight by one [the author of course] that has extensive experience. A great one to study if you are in any position of authority or even if you just have communication problems with your significant other. I highly recommend this book to everyone I know.
