1. A Hollywood script couldn't touch this. - Dan Hampton is the epitome of every professional warrior: he immersed himself into his God-given talent from its inception and remained human throughout its path while staying true to his beliefs. He is typical of every successful engineer-type mindset we have all known, one who views the world through a different lens. Add to this Colonel Hamptons ability to place you, the reader, into the cockpit with him through every flight/every mission and you have a read you will not be able to easily set aside if you've any interest whatsoever in the development of a highly intuitive pilot-or, for that matter, an insightful, innovative human. Cocky at times? Yes-but humble without reservation, especially when faced with a learning moment.
In a nutshell? An very intelligent writer taking you through his artistically and life changing-often deadly-dance in the skies of the world.

2. Very exciting read! - Viper Pilot is a great narrative of what it's like to train to become a USAF F- pilot and go to war. Lt Col Dan Hampton wrote the book without a ghost writer, so it's like sitting with the guy, having a beer, listening to him tell stories. I can just picture him demonstrating the yanking and banking with his hands as he speaks, LOL. Dan's stories are very exciting, entertaining and not at all dry. He recounts tales of being in Gulf I and II, as well as what his role was on / and about training some Egyptian pilots. Really funny stuff from Egypt! I must admit I got a little lost in technical bits occasionally, but this book is as close to flying a fighter jet as I will ever come. Thanks, Dan. "Dogs" pulls no punches with his opinions and often is not at all PC. I like people who are not afraid to say what they really think. Dan Hampton is one of those people. I wonder how he got clearance to say as much as he did about some of the things civilians will never hear about. Some people have said that Dan is a tad on the arrogant side, but I've been around military flyboys my whole life, and yup, they do tend to be that way a bit. Rightfully so! We need them to be that way to do the job that they do for us. And remember, this is HIS book, so it is logical that it revolves around "I" and "me". However, I noticed numerous places where he credits and praises other members of our military forces. One of my favorite lines is where Dogs thanks a tanker pilot who flew into the war zone to rescue him, as the F- was coasting on fumes. "Pretty ballsy thing to do by a guy sitting in a big unarmed flying gas can." Viper Pilot is a very good look into a world I will never see firsthand. I suggest you jump in and hold on!! The bad thing about books like this is that I finish them too quickly. I look forward to reading Dan's fiction.

3. High on ego, but... - As another vet who flew the Harm loaded viper in anger, found Hampton's rendition high on ego and bravado, but low on perspective - and, more importantly, low on substance worthy of the "America's best fighter pilot" claims. While we should appropriately say thanks for Hampton's service, don't think it would be tough to find hundreds, more likely thousands, with a more compelling story...

1. Great Book - A very good book that gives great insight as to what soldiers go though to defend our country. You might not agree with Mr. Kyle's viewpoints all the time, but you can't help but respect what he and other veterans (of all political stripes) have given of themselves for this nation. Rest in peace Mr. Kyle. And thank you for your service.

2. Eh... - I wanted this book to be good. What he went through and his story is intriguing, and as a veteran of the Iraq war I can relate on several things, but the book didn't capture my attention and have me not wanting to put it down like some books do. I wanted to read it before watching the movie. This might be one case where the movie does the story more justice than the book does.

3. American Hero - What an honor to have spent the last week walking in the boots of Chris Kyle, and to get a very real glimpse into the days and nights of a true American Hero! I hurt for Taya and the kids, and family of Chris, having to go on with life without their beloved husband, father, brother, and son. It doesn't seem fair that a family who so graciously lived through Chris' absence while he served the Country that he loved should be deprived of the years of peace that he and they were set to enjoy. There is comfort in the belief that God knew that Chris had served his days here on Earth with honor and distinction, and that he had earned an Honorable Discharge to join his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven.

4. American sniper interesting but lacking insight - Aside from the interesting facts presented and the easy readability, the author attempts to explain instances occurring while at home. I have known many of these guys And Chris was in good company in lacking a deep insight into himself. Maybe if he had lived longer it may have come to him but so many of them live the "facade" of who they are. The book lets us know how far we need to go to rehabilitate these ex soldiers

5. Wow. - Words cannot describe this book. It's openness and honesty are amazing. By the end of the book not only do you have a deeper appreciation for the men and women of our armed forces, you feel like you've made a friend in Chris Kyle. Like you actually know him. It's like he was actually talking to you the whole time. After I read the book, I went and watched a couple of his interviews online from when he was still alive. I then watched a part of his funeral online just to see what it was like. I cried. Even though it was years ago, I felt like I had lost a friend.

6. Could not stop reading - What an amazing American. I read this book on vacation sitting under a palm - could not stop reading his well written adventures. I realized my freedoms and my opportunity to sit under this tree are provided by Hero's like Chris. God bless his family. I can't wait to see the movie!

7. Very Good Book - As a member of the st Airborne and a sniper during the mid s I found this book to be interesting. A thin line walked by a warrior telling just enough to keep you interested without extending past the confines of missions and the requirement to maintain classified information. Such is the world of operators.

1. Ashley’s War - This is an outstanding book I couldn’t put down. I am a female veteran and was able to relate to many of the issues these women faced. Unfortunately I was in service in the late ’s and early ’s which back then none of these opportunities were available to us. Had they been, I would have been right up there with these female warriors. I’ve always felt women have a role in combat. As long as the standards are the same for both men and women, no special treatment, then let’s go!

2. Women who are HEROES - This is one of the most inspiring books I’ve ever read. It’s about women earning the opportunity to serve their country by being enablers for Army Rangers. They have to prove they can do everything a Ranger can do but they aren’t allowed to be given the title of a Ranger. They earn the respect of the Rangers by proving their value during Ranger missions.

3. Incredibly Enlightening - I have read A LOT of books. No other book has ever changed my worldview like Ashley’s War has. My understanding of the role of women in the military, especially in combat zones, is so much broader now. Previously, it was hard for me to grasp how women could be integral to a mission and why women would want to go to an active combat zone. I get it now! Ashley’s death was the hardest thing I’ve ever read. It was difficult to get through with all the tears. I felt like someone I knew & cared about had died. I’m pretty sure I will never forget Ashley & will forever carry her warrior spirit in my heart.

1. Excellent- could not put it down. - Just finished and this is one time when I wish that I could reach out to the author to say how much I appreciate his service. I think that I’ll be thinking about this for days… he did the only thing possible and both lost his career and saved our country in the process. Thank you.

2. Bravery vs the bully - This man’s bravery is what this country was once built on, but now seldom acted upon. I followed Lt Col Vindman during his Congressional testimony and felt his love and devotion to the nation, constitution and the military. Too bad Mr Trump had corrupted the higher ups in the military. Great book and every American should read it.

1. All The Gallant Men - Thank you, Donald Stratton, for writing such a wonderful book of our history. A magnificent contribution to our nation. I was four years old when Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese on December , . I remember vividly hearing the famous words of President Roosevelt, "This Day Shall Live In Infamy". I was the youngest of children..the oldest brother serving in the army and the next brother in the Navy during the war. You can imagine why I remember so well. I was such a frightened little girl. My brothers returned safely and never spoke of their experiences. They both died early deaths. How I have wished I could ask them questions. My thanks to you for your courageous service for our country. Thank you, Velma, for your love and support to your wonderful husband. You both have been blessed with each other. God bless, Helen Schultz

1. Informative but lacking substances - I read this book in the toilet or during work breaks and at times it could feel like a drag. The beginning of the book I did not like the character of Chris Kyle because he was simple minded but as he gain experience in the seals and beginning to live, he became more interesting. Overall, I felt this book was more of a "I am justified" then a book about him. He bottled a lot in and made it seem like it was a walk in the park. Even his training he watered it down to "it was rough".

2. American Sniper. Chris Kyle - A cross section of modern day war for an American patriot who was willing to sacrifice his life for our country. It’s about what he and others experienced to save our freedom giving their all while back home the people in the Republican Party have turned out to be worse and more dangerous to our democracy than those he and others fought on our behalf. I spit on those cowards for their ignorance and treason and prey that when it comes time to make the last stand to fight against them we have men like Chris Kyle to fight on our side.

3. American Sniper - Excellent account of Chris Kyle’s life as a Seal and family man. He told us about his struggles as he mixed his life in the military and as a husband and father. It ends with testimonials from friends and team mates of their relationship with this hero and friend. His tragic death leaves us with the pain of losing this man as if we knew him. An easy read that keeps you coming back wanting more and more from Chris Kyle, Sniper and Chris Kyle, husband and dad. RIP.

4. One of the most heartwarming eye opening books I have ever read - I loved this book from the moment I picked it up to the last page. My only regret is that I never had a chance to meet this amazing person. Chris Kyle was an American hero and an amazing father, husband and friend to all those lives that he touched. To say that the only the good die young is an understatement. I could go on and on, but I will end with Chris Kyle is my hero! God bless him and his Family.

5. Absolutely amazing - This is more than just an autobiography, it is a deeper look into a great mans life that he dedicated to protecting and serving this country as well as the sacrifices and hardships he faced between country and family. As you read through the various parts of Chris' life you almost feel as if you personally know him and his family. I encourage anyone even considering reading this to do so. It will shed light on so much more than just a war. I purchased this yesterday around or PM and at :PM the next day I am writing a review of the book. Well worth the read and there are some strong messages in it that will make you rethink your life.

1. Hey “ Star Shibumi” - You must have read some other book before reviewing this one. This guy is the opposite of arrogant, in fact, he is one of the most self-effacing Seals I’ve read so far. Comes across relatable and authentic. Good stories. Makes me wonder if you even read the book or if you just have it out for Seals.
2020-02-17
2. Interesting story - There is a lot to like about this story: a) It's a leadership tale that describes a common problem as leaders grow in an organization - how hard it is to transition from one level to another. Even in an elite SEAL unit that trains leaders and spends a lot of money building teams, people have a hard time making this transition. The description of the author's initial failure to make this transition and his recovery are worth reading.
b) It's a war tale that shows the importance of family, the brutality of war, the apathy of many Americans to our wars and our vets, and how hard work, support, and determination can help injured vets recover. c) Finally, it's a tale of personal triumph, of overcoming faults, and rebuilding one's life. Despite that, it wasn't worth the read because it wasn't that well written. Much of the story was rather banal and trite. And it was very hard to like Mr. Redman. He is clearly a hero and deserves our support and praise, but he comes across as an egotistical, opinionated individual, with whom I wouldn't like to spend very much time. I bought the book to support a vet. Unless you are a diehard SEAL fan, I can't think of any other reason to buy or read it.

3. Excellent book! Could not put it down. - It has all the stuff you would expect from a warrior. There is also a love story or two in the book. The love this man has for his country, team mates and his family is all over the the stories. Thanks Jay for serving and sacrificing for us all and thank you Erica for standing by your man no matter what. You are both incredible.
2015-05-30
4. Captivating - I heard Lt. Redman speak during a men's breakfast at my church. His story was one of honor, strength, and determination. This story provides a great overlay of action in the battlefield with a man struggling with the responsibility of leading the most motivated, over achieving men in the world. This book is set apart from others by Naval Seals with one word, humility. Jay peals back all the layers of his life for a look inside a man fighting himself. Thank you for sharing your life with us. God Bless you and your family, and thank you for your service.
2015-03-22
5. Leadership insights few will ever experience directly - Some components of leadership are universal. However, Lt. Redman and Mr. Burning write from a perspective most of us will never have. The leader that Lt. Redman strived to be literally held lives in his hands. I am better for having read The Trident and I thank these gentlemen for sharing it.
2014-09-07
6. The Trident - The Trident may be one of the best books I have ever read. It deals with Warrior life on all levels. Most importantly, it exemplifies the courage to transcend from a survivor, to a Legend. I am truly humbled by Jason Redman. God bless you and your family. And please realize that there are plenty of Americans that are so thankful for the sacrifice you and your Brothers have made, so we may sleep peacefully through the night.

1. A tale of extraordinary courage - Wow -a dramatic very well written tour de force with clarity of descriptions that vividly convey the experience of chronic deprivation the pangs of starvation fear anxiety and suffering. How this orphaned little child survived is as astonishing as her courage and will. Its a very sad emotive story and despite eventual immigration to the US it is clear the trauma to her soul of what she saw and endured will never fully heal. This in one of the most impactful books i have ever read and i offer humble thanks to Ms. Loung Ung for sharing her story with me and the world. We must all continue the never ending fight against evil corrupt incompetent uncaring governments because as long as there are evil and terribly misguided men as there continue to be, this type of disaster can certainly recur.

2. Emotional - This book was important for me to read to learn about my family’s history and the history of Cambodia. Reading this I became more aware. It also helped me connect to Cambodia through Loung‘s descriptions. It was well written and I’m glad that it became a movie. Overall, best book I’ve EVER read.
2019-02-07
3. Moving and heartbreaking - It's hard to "review" a book like this; the author's ability to retro her experiences in her own childhood narration highlights how harrowing her experience was. The confusion and loss. It's very hard hitting and difficult to accept at times, and at times angering, that such horrible things could happen. It's also inspiring to see her come through it all. Very moving.

1. Restoration of faith - This book touched me on so many different levels. It took me a long time to read, not because it was a hard read, but because I became so emotionally involved with Taya’s messages. This book encouraged me to lean on my faith more than I ever had before, and quite frankly I couldn’t have read it at a more important time in my life.

2. American Wife - So hard to put down! My heart continues to ache for Taya. Her recounting of the worst experience any wife can possible imagine was gripping and raw and made it hard to breathe through the tears. Her strength and determination to continue to persevere is inspiring and humbling. Thank you for sharing your love and your strength. I am blessed to have read this book.

3. Love - I'm way behind with the book reading. I started this book yesterday afternoon and finished it in a day. I cried, I laughed, and I smiled. My husband serves and was in a helicopter accident last Labor Day that honestly nobody should have survived it. So I can relate to her worrying while he was deployed. But I too had to keep it together for my kids. This book was beyond amazing and I seriously loved it and throughly enjoyed it. Now to read American Sniper. I've had both books since May just now getting ready to read them.

4. Courage and Bravery at its finest - This was an absolutely awesome book! I couldn't put it down. Taya Kyle shows tremendous courage and bravery in what she is going through. She is very open and honest (as was Chris Kyle in American Sniper) in everything she wrote. I cried lots of tears and my heart goes out to this family. I pray for God's many blessings over them.

5. American Wife; Simply awesome! - What an awesome book! So real, so raw, so genuine! Very heart touching. If you wanted to know more after the end of American Sniper, then this is the continuation you were seeking! I laughed, I cried, I pondered. This book, along with American Sniper has touched me greatly. They have had a profound and lasting effect on me. Thank you Chris & Taya Kyle!

6. Eye opener - I loved this book. There were times I couldn't go to sleep because I couldn't put it down! It is such an interesting look into the eyes of the families of our military, it opens your eyes to everything they go through on a different level. Sad, heartbreaking actually, but worth the read. It will somehow make you stronger.

7. HOOKED FROM THE FIRST PAGE - Being a navy wife and with my husband just coming home from a month deployment, this book really made me feel like I wasn't crazy nor was I alone in the every day struggles that do come along with being a military wife. I felt Taya's pain to my soul... I cried reading this book, more than I ever have at any other book. This is DEFINITELY a must read. I COULD NOT put it down!!! Love it! Love it! Love it! P.s. Read American Sniper too--AMAZING!!!!

8. Lessons On Life - You want to appreciate your freedom, read American Sniper.. Then watch the movie, any order.. You want to see how tough a mom or wife has to be while a husband is gone, and then only to lose a husband for the fight of freedom, read American Wife.. She's The Toughest Wife I Know.. Robbie Hulett..
2015-06-23
9. Amazing! - I pre ordered this book, and I am thrilled I did. I have seen Taya speak, and know what a strong woman she is, but this book shows that even more. There is truly something for everyone to take away. We have all had loss, pain, struggles, and at times felt our Faith was being tested. This is as real as it gets! Great book, I'm so glad you decided to write it!

10. American Wife is one of the most remarkable memoirs of the year - An amazing book, probably the most touching, thought provoking and honest example of what really happens in life I have ever read and one that speaks to me in almost as many ways personally. Love, trust , heartbreak, grief, betrayal, faith, family and friendship it's all here.... raw and honest and in my personal experience how it really happens.
Taya Kyle - American Wife, shares their private story: an unforgettable testament to the power of love and faith in the face of war and unimaginable loss--a moving tribute, then the strength of a women facing insurmountable odds and the dedication, resilience, determination and faith to grieve, cope, rise from the ashes, the bravely move forward to over-come in SEAL tradition. "The only easy day was yesterday," could never be farther from he truth.
American Wife is one of the most remarkable memoirs of the year -- a universal chronicle of love and heartbreak, service and sacrifice, faith and purpose that will inspire every reader.
They say behind every great man is a great pillar of a women and this book will take you there. My highest, highest recommendation. If there is one book you read this year this should be it.
Hooyah!

11. Taya Kyle is as AMAZING as Chris Kyle. - As good as American Sniper, of course it is, its Taya Kyle, Chris Kyles wife, this is a must read, i could not put it down, from personal struggles to moving forwards and everything in the middle, Taya has it all,and comes out like a true American, classy lady, i wish there were more people like the Kyle family.
AMAZING AMAZING read, remember to pray for Taya and Bubba and Angel. Also dont forget the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation. Our Brothers and Sisters need us.

12. American Wife - Breathtaking - Everything about this book draws you in and completely consumes you. It was so easy to get lost in it and lose track of how much you've read. Being a former military wife, it brought back the pain and fear of your spouse deploying and having to entertain the idea of death and how to possibly overcome it, if it ever came down to that. It's something no one should ever have to think about or endure. Taya perfectly captures those emotions and her sharing her life and experiences with Chris was truly amazing to read and get wrapped up in. Even through the pain of the book, it was absolutely beautiful. God Bless you and your children, Taya Kyle.

13. American Wife - Taya Kyle & Jim Falice - What a marvelous read. Very life affirming. Taya's sharing was so heart felt and soul filling. I was grateful for her honest words and struggles-may the CCFF continue to grow and help those intended in crisis. Thank You so much for being vulnerable and humble. Your vision is much appreciated.

14. Amazing! stars! - If you have read American Sniper, seen the movie and think you already know the whole story, you have no idea! I read this book in days it's beautiful, raw and life changing in many ways. If only more people in this world had the love, faith and values of the Kyle family. For anyone who has ever lost someone they love Taya helps you feel you are not alone, she is truly an inspiring, strong woman. Must read book!

15. Always Wondered - Brilliantly wrote, leaves you wanting to know even more. Raw and sometimes unreal, the book draws you in and for an instant you feel the pain. Proud that Taya could come forward and write something amazing as this. There aren’t many books out there showing families picking up the pieces after their loved one is gone. A must read. I will read again, I’m sure of it.

1. Old ex Marine - This has been the most fascinating tome of any kind I've ever read. The world would be a far better place if there were more Johnny Walkers in it. Everyone should take the time to read this book. It will put your hat on straight, and remind us all why America is the greatest country in the world.

2. Code name: Johnny Walker - What a great read. Exciting, keeps you on the edge of your seat and you really come to like and respect the main character in the book.
The fact that he was honorable, courageous, and humble in the midst of the worst humanity can throw at him is a testament to his inner self.
I also loved his description of America in an immigrants eyes and he came and lives with his family for all the right reasons.
My hat is off to you Johnny Walker,

3. Deserving of fame - Although a baby boomer, I’m much more familiar with the American perspective of Operation Desert Storm and the wars in Iraq, than I am with the Vietnam era. Aided by my years working as a civilian with the Navy and Marine Corps, I found this book to be a vivid perspective of life from the Iraqi point of view and added color and validity to what I heard in the US news. I highly recommend this book.

4. A must read.. - This books provides insight into the lives of ordinary Iraqis surviving constant war. J. W. is a family man who starts working with American troops to support his family. In getting to know the Seals, J. W. learns about American culture and values and eventually comes to the States. J.W.'s contribution to the Seals is admirable. This was a great read. I couldn't put the book down.

1. Craig & Fred - Read This Book - It’s Absolutely Fantastic! - In my opinion, this is a book well worth reading! For those who love animals, you soon learn the love you show to your animal friend is returned to you in abundance. This is the story of Craig and Fred who developed a bond so strong in Afghanistan that it fortifies them both through war and life. It is a true love story, who’s lessons can apply to today’s world of social unrest between various peoples. The writing style is very effective in defusing the emotional heaviness of war with the positive powerfulness of life. Thank you, Craig, for bringing this story to the world at large and helping us to somewhat understand the needs of returning veterans. P.S. Here’s a virtual salute to “Sergeant” Fred!

2. Craig and Fred - As a civilian with no military experience, the only hope I have of understanding even a little bit about PTSD is hearing about each individual’s experiences, or at least the ones that they are willing to share with another person, group, or in a this case, the world. As a dog lover, and supporter of service dogs for veterans challenged both physically and mentally, this book shines a bright light on just how critically important these animals are in assisting those needing help greeting each day. That Craig was blessed to meet and befriend a fully capable service dog (no training required...good boy!) in the dust of Afghanistan makes for a compelling tale of friendship and unconditional love, not only between man and dog, but also among the soldiers and friends that populate this excellent memoir. Every person should be as lucky to find their own Fred.

1. MustRead!! - This is a great boob that outlines the issues with how we operated in Afghanistan and what we should have been doing instead of what we did. The betrayal by his superiors led to the downfall and if you like reading military history you must read this book. Obviously you need to view it through the lense of it being written by his wife but even with that caveat you will be taken away to a world that is equally uplifting and infuriating. had we actually stayed the course with his mission the outcome may have been very very different.

2. Excellent exposé - Jim Gant was obviously working outside the box while his Special Forces bosses were content to just think outside of it. His groundbreaking efforts in Afghanistan created a professional jealousy among his peers and commanders, including the towering SF hero, John Mulholland, who should be ashamed of himself for belittling Gant. Look, if people like David Petraeus and Eric Olson admire you as a soldier, your career has been highly productive. Who cares what a few career officers think? They’ll make good politicians, maybe. Bravo Zulu, Captain. You got the job done.

3. An Amazing Yet Flawed American Hero: Major Jim Gant in American Spartan - I just finished reading a book that was very good a couple days ago. It is titled, American Spartan: The Promise, The Mission, and the Betrayal of Special Forces Major Jim Gant. The author is Ann Scott Tyson who is uniquely qualified to give us a intimate and gripping insight into Major Gant as she is his lover and, now, his wife. The book details Major Gant’s revolutionary vision for how to fight the war in Afghanistan and how, as a Green Beret, he carried that vision out during the Afghanistan troop surge. The Major came out with a paper titled One Tribe at a Time and the eventual commander of ISAF forces in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus, recognized its value and sought to have its author at the center of its implementation. What entails brings a new perspective on the Afghan people, particularly the Pashtuns of eastern Afghanistan, and will leave you wide eyed over both the brilliance and heroism of Major Gant and the men that served under him, and the total ineptitude of the United States Military to understand the war that they found themselves in the middle of. Also enthralling and heartbreaking is seeing throughout the book how invested Major Gant was in the effort and the toll that his investment took on him both psychologically and professionally. As a Pulitzer Prize-nominated war correspondent, Ann’s ability to write is never in question. The book is well written and flows extremely well. It is one of those works of literature that is very hard to put down when its time for bed. Typically, I would say that something in this genre would only appeal to fans of military history or those learning about the war in Afghanistan but this book transcends that and I think that people who love reading in general will find it both thought provoking and entertaining. One thing that Ann does really well is bring the Pashtuns of the various tribes they met and came to love into a new perspective. Most military books I have read about Afghanistan to this point leave you wondering two things: why are the Afghans so inept and what in the world are we doing there. This book showed me that while Pashtun culture is brutal and simple, it is also beautiful and honorable, wrapped up in the ancient code of Pashtunwali. It also makes the Afghan people truly humanized and made me love them in a deep way. I sympathize that they are simply doing as they always have, surviving, and we, as American’s, simply are not addressing the conflict there in a way that relates or helps a large portion of the Afghan people. This is no slight to our brave men and women in the Armed Forces that have served there, but is a indictment on our politicians and leaders and the strategy that they have employed there. The book does bounce around chronologically a bit, to help the reader gain a greater understanding on Major Gant and the things that shaped his view on war and life, but it remains very easy to follow and read. I like my heroes to be flawed and imperfect. It makes them human to me. And Major Gant is the embodiment of that. He is not only brilliant and a great American but struggles with demons that many Americans do and struggles to deal with the effect of war on his mental and physical well being. Despite his flaws, he is an American hero and it is disgusting and fascinating to watch how egos and politics totally unravel and, eventually, undue him. If you are even remotely interested in the sacrifices our service members are making Afghanistan or in the war there, this book is a must read. It has everything a good story needs: excitement, adventure, betrayal, a strong protagonist, a myriad of antagonists that you wouldn’t expect and love from a variety of sources and contexts.

4. More like a novel - Hard to write a review of this book. There is no question of MAJ. Gant's bravery and dedication and that he developed and executed a ground breaking strategy. It is too bad that his behavior negated a lot of this, he should have known that could or would happen. He understood the Afghan culture better than his own profession. In my humble opinion he was right about the tribe by tribe or village by village strategy, that is a perfect overlay of the culture and loyalty. When there, I made an effort to understand the culture and loyalties of the Afghan people and I think I was partially successful but it pales in comparison to MAJ. Gant's. He lived it at a level and intensity that few officers or soldiers did.
As for the book--probably too many embellishments that make parts of it unbelievable. The book left me sad based on the final outcome.
I hope that MAJ. Gant is at peace and happy, wherever he may be.

5. Must read - Sometimes effective leaders take the non-traditional approach. The book shows positive efforts applied in this very fashion, along with political backlash associated with warriors who don't take the normal path. Must read for those who grasp to understand Afghanistan and America's military presence.

6. An Incredible Story - I'll join the ranks of a few others here who knew or served with Jim and Dan. They may never remember me, we we're only at A-Camp Gereshk (later named after CW Price who was KIA while we were there) for a short time, but in their way ODA and especially Jim Gant helped shape my thoughts on war and changed the entire direction of my career. This telling of his story kept me up all night afterwards. Thanks to Ann Scott Tyson for capturing the details and living it too.

1. Real. Intense. Laugh out loud good read!! - I really enjoyed this book. As a combat vet, this is a part of the military I never experienced (mechanized), but the cast of characters and experiences in war are much the same, regardless of branch or timeframe. I found myself identifying with the author and laughing out loud in many sections. A great read!

2. Great Story, Well Told - This is a fast paced story, told by the guy ( —make that ’stud’) who left some of his blood in the dirt. I read this quickly, because the story is gripping, action packed and well told. Then a few weeks later I read it again…it’s that good. I read a lot, and a lot of what I read is military…and this book is clearly in the top % of the genre. IMHO, of course. Highly recommended.

1. Great story about a true American hero! - I don't know how it can get any better than a true account of the battle of Midway by a Navy dive bomber pilot who fought and lived through it. Not only that, he was partially responsible for sinking two Japanese aircraft carriers. Then he lived to be years old. This is a great true story about a guy who grew up in Kansas, went to the Naval Academy and went on to do heroic things in the heat of battle. What a story!

2. Great story - The importance of remember great battles or war it self is how we put out men and women under great stress. This is real story and how training or the lack of training is the difference between success and failure. I spent twenty years in the Navy and so many of the places "Dusty" went I have also gone. Great story, Victor Vogelsang EMCS(SS) US Navy Ret.

1. Every Man a Hero - Since being confined at home during Coved I have read more than twenty war books all written by the men who lived through the ordeals described. Many have been riveting stories of danger, suffering and courage however none have been written with the grace, beauty and stile of Every Man a Hero. The author’s prose defy belief that he was a poor Alabama farm boy who dropped out of school at an early age. His writing has the beauty and flow of Hemingway or Faulkner.

1. A Sacred Oath - Mark T.Esper book was the most interesting book I had read about anyone working during the Trump administration, more importantly keeping his values and keeping politics out of the military. I have some other books by former people working in the Trump administration but his the best, but most important how he held to his principles of duty and honor to himself and the Department of Defense Kevin

1. Couldn't put it down - I read this cover to cover, and found myself crying a few times. This book is extremely insightful to those who have sworn to protect. My husband is retired Army, and has done tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He's now a defense contractor who spends months out of the year living in a wooden shack in the mountains of Afghanistan. I've always wondered what he's seen, where he's been, what he's done...and now I know just a fragment. Thank you again...

1. Why??? - I was surprised to find the author contemplating many of Grant”s mistakes i n the light that he was accused of abusing alcohol every so often. It is mentioned so often in this book, that it actually reduces the man to almost an “in the closet” drunk. He was human, with faults, but not to the point that Korda places him. Read this book after the battle for england which was an incredible book, but disappointed here.

1. Totoole - This book is provides a more realistic view of Erik Prince and Blackwater than Jeremy Scahill's book. There is no liberal slant attempting to black ball the Blackwater company. It does identify strengths and weaknesses of the company as well as it's meteoric rise to prominence in the security and protection industry. Erik Prince is identified as a businessman and SEAL...being able to adapt and improvise to accomplish any task at hand, but he is naive to the bureaucracy of contracting with the Government. Overall well written and insightful!
