1. First Bass Player to get Radio Airplay - I was there...watching this version of Weather Report and I was stunned by the addition of Jaco Pastorius. If you are in your late 's or older, you'll remember hearing "TEENTOWN" and "BIRDLAND" Get a lot of airtime. I compare it to Cliffs of Dover and Trademark by Eric Johnson. Many years in the making and still marvelous whenever you throw the cd in. Thanks to Jow Z, Wayne S, Jaco P, and th rest of the crew on this album...it's as good as virtuosity has been put to work.

2. So Nice I Bought It Twice - Although I already own this amazing album on vinyl -- I acquired it new when I was a teenager and listened to it religiously back then -- I heard "A Remark You Made" while in a store this weekend and decided I had to have Heavy Weather in my iTunes immediately. After all this time and the all the music that has been made and remade, Heavy Weather is still a solid gem. Genius musicians at the apex of their talents.

3. Great album, lower price if you pay attention - I copied this from my own review on another music download service:
I like this album a lot, but I'm no expert in jazz so you'd be better off reading other reviews. However, I wanted to point out that since there are only songs at cents each, you can get this album for only $. if you buy each song individually, rather than clicking the buy album button. That's just over $ cheaper than the normal $. album price. Enjoy! Note: Since Birdland is 'Album Only' you can just buy it from one of the other albums it comes on. Also in response to the conversation about high school bands playing Birdland, check out El Dorado High School perform Birdland. It's extremely well done. You can find it on... uh... a major online video site.

4. Jaco was a genius - I heard Jaco's solo album and then this album (I had listened to Weather Report prior to Jaco showing up). I proceeded to have my fretless Precision Bass modified with J-Bazz pickups, a sunk bridge and a new ebony and birds-eye maple neck. It sounded as close to Jaco as I could get it (I still have the bass to this day). I sat down for a few days and learned Portrait of Tracy (from his eponymous album) and Teen Town (off this album) and never looked back. It's a shame he left us so early, but I guess with genius comes torture.

5. Birdland/Heavy Weather - This rendition of Birdland, I saw them play (- or there bouts).. at The Great Southern Music Hall in Orlando, FL. Long gone by now, it was essentially an old movie theater converted for traveling bands. What an awesome setting it was. I still hear them and see them in my mind... it was just an incredible show. They played an experience I'll not forget. "Heavy Weather" is a must have classic!!!!!

6. its the jazz bible - i am years old, and live for jazz. this album is definitly on my favorites list. i can't get enough of these songs. The percussion is mindblowing and it makes me want to listen more and more. This version of birdland is by far the best i have heard. It is way worth the money it is a must have in any jazz collection

7. One of the cornerstone albums of Fusion - The influence of this album cannot be overstated. Exemplary songwriting and playing propel this album to the pinnacle of a genre already crowded with incredible talent. As one reviewer mentioned, bassists were knocked out by Jaco's performance and compositions here, just after having gotten up off the floor from his solo debut a year earlier. And that's just one cat. Everyone on this date is cookin'! Others like Yayee can say what they want. He/she even mentions Jaco's and Wayne's virtuosity but then goes on to reveal him/herself to be not at all hep to what's happening here. "Cheesy 's synths?!" The album was released in so according to Yayee's own standards the synths are groundbreaking and ahead of their time! That many of these tunes have become standard jazz calls is a testament to the fact that "outside" and "corny" just aren't the right words to use. Certainly not everyone may not be a WR fan, but all who listen with an ear towards history and context can appreciate the heaviness showcased here. Definitely one for the "Must Have" column.

8. beautiful and classic - i bought this on vinyl (as a teenager) when it came out, just about wore it out. i just re-purchased it today, and still love it. on my itunes, this album was listed as "partial" i previously purchased "birdland" from another album, so maybe that's why it's not showing up here. if for some legal reason it's not available as a part of "heavy weather" get it to make the album complete.

9. Genius x - Yayaee, you obviously are too young to appreciate what these legends did to change the face of jazz forever. What you call "cheesy" was innovative beyond its time. It is too bad you were not alive to see the band play live, and to understand the depths of their creativity and talent. Noone else since has had the guts and genius to do what WR did, and my guess is that if you commit yourself to the study of jazz and improvizational music, you will realize this too someday. This is a phenomenal album and it ought to be in every jazz enthusiast's collection, regardless of what instrument you play. Every band member is/was a genius, and it shows in this album. Enjoy!

10. The number one Bass Players album - Being a Musician/Bass Player myself, This album opened up everything for Bass and any Bass player that plays today owes homage to Jaco and this album of some of the best musicians for its time. What Jimi Hendrix was to guitar, Jaco is to the Bass world. If you are a Bass Player, this should be a must have album or any musician for that matter.

11. In responce to akbrother's review - I have also heard school bands play Birdland. They make it seem very cheezy. I once asked my friend about Birdland. He said that it is okay! Later, I played the original version for him and he was amazed! The original version is far (far far far...) superior to the big band versions we hear today. Although, I'm sure that there is a great big band version somewhere out there. Birdland is an amazing piece and A Remark You Made is one of the most beautiful fusion tunes EVER!! Jaco's Teen Town and Havona add a lot to the album as well. Heavy Weather is an AMAZING album!

12. Whaaa???? - This collection is undoubtibly the most forward looking Jazz collection of it's time. I would like to know what Yay Who (Ya Yee) thought of other great moments in musical history, but only for tragic-comic relief sake. I am staggered by YY's ignorance - it's like someone complaining about having to change a light bulb - unaware of the light that it sheds on their dullard's existence. This is likely THE Greatest Jazz Album of the last half of the th Century, possible even to-date, in someways. When it hit, It Ruled and Reigned - uncontested & undefeated. Everyone was left scrambling trying to understand what had just happened. It was The Culmination of the entire Fusion period. Everyone else just came along to bring up the rear, for years to come. (with acknowledgements to Return to Forever -which walked Fusion in to the mainstream.) There are fools in every court - thanks for being our's YY ugh!!!
2008-04-04
13. Heavy Weather - To be honest, this album just is not appealing to me. I dont know why. It just doesnt sound right to ME. That is my opinion, and everyone is entitled to their own. It is musically brilliant, I just dont come back to it often, so I give it three stars. Like I said, something about it just doesnt settle with me. Give the samples a listen before you buy it, so you can get a feel for what is going on.
2008-01-13
14. time and place - this album stands out to this very day as representative of fusion 's, there isn't a musician i know in jazz that dosent rever this. as to any nay sayers . . . look at the time line of this album and pop culture and tell me it wasnt huge in its impact and tell me its cheesy when you here jaco's bass over gritty synths and loud distorted horns . . . its magic
2007-12-15
15. An essential Jazz album. - Ths album lead's off with one of the most recognizable and covered Jazz songs in history, moves to one of the most gorgeous ballads I've ever heard, and then Jaco takes front and center with "Teen Town" and quickly confirms his place in Jazz history. Combine Zawinul's soul and compositional craftmanship with Shorter's unique and influential tenor playing and then add the fire, chops, and energy of Jaco with the rythmic fervor of two of the greatest percussionists ever and you get one of the greatest and best-selling Jazz albums of all time. Groups comprised of master players don't always add up to masterful albums, but here, the whole truly is greater than the sum of the parts. And considering the parts, that's saying something.
2007-11-15
16. regarding "Ya Yee" - Regarding the opinion of "Ya Yee" all I have to say is that is the wonderful thing about America. What can you say about a country where you are free to voice your opinion no matter how STUPID and UNDEDUCATED it might be! Here you have freaking Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul and Jaco Pastorious laying down some of the most virtuosic playing ever put down on vinyl! This is one of the all time classic fusion albums (and one of the all time great albums, period) and this guy makes that stupid comment; give me a break!
2007-09-14
17. RIP Joe Zawinul - This is one of the best Jazz records of the 's, which was a very difficult time for the genre. Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter were consumate jazzers, and although they were a "fusion" group, they never abandonded the Jazz sensibility. Peace to Joe - you were a great talent and you kept Jazz alive during it's darkest era.
2007-09-11
18. top five album - This album easily makes my top five albums of all time. All the tunes are clever and provide an opportunity for individual musicians to display considerable talent. Jaco Pastorious and Wayne Shorter are simply at their best -- and that's saying a lot -- on this 's classic. Birdland is a real finger snapper. I hear high school and college bands mangling it often now. The next three songs are very atmospheric, but they work. Rumba Mama was an opportunity for the percussionists to show off. And then the last three cuts are just some of the most fantastic, intense jamming I've ever heard. I've introduced this classic to many people over the years. Everyone has considered great. It is!
2007-04-18
19. Be QUIET YaYee!!! :( - Show some respect for these jazz legends, the chord progression is very good and the rhythms are worth remembering for years to come. Each member brings their own set of talent to this powerful and all around great album. Such criticism is not necessary, nor is it plausible to prove your point. Listen to the grooves and the works in between the music; subliminal meanings of greatness is what this legendary album represents. Rethink your critical judgements, A.K.A.
2007-01-21
20. Mind expanding! - This genre-bending record is nothing short of miraculous. Eight texture-laden, journeys that achieve the Holy Grail; intricately arranged music that feels open, free, and spontaneous. Filled with catchy hooks, world class playing, and magic, this is music for the dancing soul. Heavy Weather is a rare, brilliant, and timeless, artistic statement.

1. OK you guys! - On one of the most important groundbreaking albums of all time, by one of our favorite drummers and producers, iTunes has let us all down.
The tracks are well scrambled and all misnamed, and there are duplicates...it's a mess...
Trying to make sense of it, (Not being an expert or an authority by any means) Analyzing the iTunes download, which I paid for and now have-
This is what I came up with:
. Quadrant
. Searching for the right door/Spectrum
. Anxiety/Taurean Matador
. Stratus
. To the women in my life
. Snoopy's Search/Red Baron
. To the women in my life/Le Lis
. Le Lis
.Snoopy's Search/Red Baron
. Red Baron
That means Red Baron is repeated times, Snoopy's Search, To the women in my life, and Le Lis are all repeated twice, and these are NOT outakes or other versions.
THE CORRECT ORDER IS SUPPOSED TO BE:
(According to the Vinyl released in )
. Quadrant (:)
. Searching for the right door (:)
. Spectrum (:)
. Anxiety (:)
. Taurean Matador (:)
. Stratus (:)
. To The Women In My Life (.)
. Le Lis (:)
. Snoopy's Search (:)
. Red Baron (:)
I don't have the Vinyl, but I got the titles and play times by searching online. If i have made a mistake, will you please help us all out? Thanks to all the drumdawgs and lovers out there, peace

2. iTunes was smoking something - So yeah, after some research, I was happy to note that all the original LP tracks are contained here, but a few are mislabeled. Tracks and are correct, but Track is actually Anxiety / Taurian Matador. Track is actually Stratus, Track is actually To the Women in My Life / Le Lis, and Track is actually Snoopy's Search / Red Baron. Track should be To the Women in My Life, and the rest are correct, but I don't know how the track list got so jacked up on iTunes. Still, it's good to know that all the tracks from the original album are here. I have been a fusion fan for a while, but got kind of burned out after buying and listening to Miles Davis albums. After revisiting it, I found this gem, and I am so glad I did. I loved Billy in Mahavishnu Orchestra, and he really lays back and takes more of a support role in this album, which I would not have expected. He definitely brings the caliber of players to make this album great, though. The whole album is great, but I especially love Stratus (mislabeled as Anxiety / Taurian Matador here) and Red Baron. Both of those songs are just groovy as hell. I definitely reccommend this album to any music lover.

3. Glad I found this after years - Just started'i-tuning'(I'm yrs old)with recent Christmas present (I-pod nano). Younger people DON'T PASS THIS UP for reasons others have allready mentioned. I also was looking for the 'original Stratus'. As others have mentioned it's here with a different title. I'll probably end up buying all the songs even though I was initially looking for the original Stratus. Thank-you I-Tunes.

4. A Grossly Underrated Fusion Jazz Masterpiece - Spectrum was one of the first fusion jazz records to captivate me, mainly due to Tommy Bolin's guitar riffs, which are centered around pentatonic blues scales fairly reminiscent of blues-influenced classic rock. It is for this reason that I would recommend this album to classic rock fans who are looking to cultivate an appreciation for fusion jazz. However, do not be deceived: this fusion jazz album incorporates elements from many other genres as well. Such is evidenced, for instance, by the use of congas on the fifth track. The tracks bear a sharper edge at some moments, and a soft, more acoustic feel at others. If the variety of the album does not captivate, then there is still the electric speed and smoothness of Cobham's drumming; Lee Sklar's dense, meaty bass playing; and the general prowess of the other players on the record. I discovered this record when I was fourteen, and it still remains one of my favorites to this day.

5. Fantastic Stuff! - This really is a GREAT album, Billy's best and one of the classics of jazz/rock fusion. The musicianship (is that a word?) is outstanding in every detail. I love to just pick out an instrument and follow it through its' progressions. Drums, guitar, bass, keyboards...all just dynamic. Tommy Bolin, in particular, really lets loose in a fashion rarely seen even on his excellent solo albums. Yes, the track listings need to be redone (track IS Stratus), but it's all good. If you just want to own a taste, try tracks , , , and . Get it though...you won't be disappointed.
2009-05-09
6. Billy Cobham Spectrum - Despite this being listed as a partial album. It is not so. If your familiar with this album you will notice that the song Stratus is the only missing one, but its in there. It has been omitted for some reason from the song listing. Its in there right after Anxiety/Taurian Matador.
2008-06-28
7. Jazz-Fusion : Spectrum - What happens when you mix the performances of a Panamanian drummer, an Eastern European pianist, one of the most chilled-out and groovy bassists and a rock guitarist on one album - oh yeah, and a great horn section? Spectrum is what happens. Billy Cobham proves that you don't have to gobble up all the limelight on your own solo record; most of the time he just sits back with Lee Sklar on his Fender bass and grooves under the amazing solos of Jan Hammer and Tommy Bolin. Also, Ron Carter lends a helping hand to the title track and "Le Lis" in the form of his amazing acoustic bass performace. If you or anyone you know is not well-versed in "groove," just listen to the amazing "Red Baron." Afterwards, if you still can't quite grasp "groove," music is probably not really your thing. This album is quite possibly the finest example of Jazz-Fusion to ever grace human ears. Too bad iTunes neglected to include one of my personal favorites, "Stratus," with this download - stars for the album ; negative stars for iTunes!

8. Yeah, there's some mixups here... But I'm still glad it can be found! - I saw Billy Cobham live at Yoshi's last night and it inspired me to restock my catalog. This album was always on my wish list, and I'm somewhat familiar with it... but the "partial album" status, plus the confusion about "Stratus", convinced me to do some research. On the CD, the track order is slightly different; "Stratus" is track , and "Taurean Matador" is track ; the rest is the same. If you compare the two versions of "Anxiety/Taurean Matador" on this collection, and on the anthology, you'll find that they are two different songs. On this collection, "A/TM" is actually "Stratus", and on the anthology, "A/TM" is a two-part song I've never previously heard. Also, there seems to be no relation between the "Taurean Matador" that is the second half of "A/TM", and the "Taurean Matador" that is part of this collection; the grooves are completely different, and on first listen, I didn't detect much similarity to the progressions. I've noticed title mixups with iTunes before, but I'm still glad they have this music available to us. As everybody seems to agree: this music is worth owning, and worth the the effort to investigate and clear up the mysteries...

9. Nothin' Missing! - Woah.... What's missing from this GEM? well lets see, another review stated that the song Stratus was missing. Not the case. The song title Stratus was I believe a working title. The song is here in it's entirety, as Anxiety/Taurian Matador. Another beautiful display of Tommy Bolin's Guitar Work! Showing his fusion prowess. In a time before Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer were doing it. If you love great guitar tone and killer licks that to this day are unparalled in this genre, you're going to love this record. Don't get me wrong I love Jeff Becks work just as much!! Tommy seems to step over the edge a little more, fused with Cobhams brilliant playing this is a must own item!

10. While Cleaning My House - While Cleaning My House, I came across part of my house - actually bathroom closet where I kept all my LPs - Yes Vinyl Records. And pulled out this Album I have not listened to in.. um.... years I bought this when it came out in . Wow!! what an album. Especially Tommy Bolin, so underrated - you can really see how good he was - he died of heroin overdoes in . what a waste of life. I am playing the Red Baron over and over. Of course, Jan Hammer - who I saw times with Jeff Beck in concert is so-so good.. too good. He's licks just blows my mind. Loved Joe Farrow's sax. - who later teamed with likes of Chick Corea.. and little did I know Lee Skalar played bass - didn't he later played bass for Phil Collins? Well. Hey I wantted to put these tune on my iPod.. how do I do that from an LP... which is a tad scratch.. not bad for year old record. But iTune's got it .. Great..!!!

11. Billy cobham album must have! - one of the best drummer in the world, used to be in the fusion supergroup with john maclaughlin, jan hammer-which plays on this album.Billy wanted to play his own music-which he didn't have a chance to with john maclaughlin.Well this album sells all on it own, every track is jazzy and plenty of fusion music.Get this album .
2007-03-18
12. Excellent fusion work-song missing though - Why does I-tunes sell partial albums and edited songs? Though none of these songs are edited, there is a supurb song missing from this album. -Stratus- is a part of this album and is a glaring omission from what is an outstanding album. Cobham is easily one of the top five drummers of any genre- ever. His precision and dexterity never ceases to amaze me. Any fusion, prog rock Jazz, funk lovers will love Cobham's skills.

1. How do you NOT own this? - I bought this the DAY it came out. I’ve been listening and unraveling the mysteries inside ever since. Having become a guitar teacher in the rd act of my life, whenever anyone asks me how to play the guitar, I say simple. Follow these steps. .) Buy Strat style guitar. .) Buy amp .) Buy Blow by Blow and learn. The end. Jeff Beck IS the electric guitar, and no one and no thing can ever come close.

2. Must have for guitarist! - If your a guitarist and haven't heard this song than treat yourself to this. This is true genius. Turn it on, close your eyes and smile. Learn to play this and you will hypnotize your audiences. No one plays like this anymore. The scales and chord variations are different and refreshing yet its a classic piece of beauty. Love it.

3. Blow by Blow - Jeff finnally had a huge success with an Album that for many came out of left field. However Jeff was always different and this" Billy Colbam- spectrum" album inspired effort is one of the beat jazz rock fusion albums made. Jeff took the Tommy Bolan- Colbam effort to heart and made it commercially successful by doing doing it jeff's way. I remember reading it was his first gold album(including yardbirds) till then. Download "cause we ended as lovers" and look up Billy Colbam's Spectrum.

4. Amazing Musical Journey! - This album is just about perfect in every way. I've heard it dozens of times, and it has never gotten even slightly old. The band (and Jeff of course) sounds great, and the arrangements are mesmerizing! Songs are catchy, relaxing, and upbeat all at the same time! What are you waiting for?!
2010-03-24
5. Fantastic Album! - In my opinon this album is the absolute height of Jeff Becks career! No other Fusion guitarist has ever been able to weave such mind-bending solos that sound so fluid and natural. The rhythm section is spot on with Richard Bailey providing the drums and percussian for the album and Phil Chen playing bass. Because they form such a solid foundation it allows Max Middleton and Jeff Beck to explore dissonant, creative, musical concepts that no other instrumental album had approached before. Also, Stevie Wonder makes a guest apperance on the album and and plays keyboards on two tracks [Cause We've Ended as Lovers and Thelonius]. This a fantastic album I recommend everybody purchase!
2009-12-26
6. Best Fusion Album I Own - It's amazing to see how Jeff Beck emerged from the yardbirds to go on to be a guitar god today. This album is one the best fusion albums that I have ever owned. Most of the new fusion albums that I have only have a few good songs. But I love ALL the songs on this album! That, my friends, is the difference between the classic rock era and the "hip hop era" that we are in now, where rock n roll, and fusion are not really on the map anymore.
2009-11-30
7. Blow By Blow - This CD, by far, exemplifies who Jeff Beck is and what he can do! Listening to this gives me such exquisite pleasure! Jeff creates with 'Cause We've Ended As Lovers' & 'Diamond Dust' a sound so pure, tight and sensual...and 'Scatterbrain' has a rapid fire delivery that rips through this listener Whoa!
2009-11-22
8. Still Amazing - For those of us that are old enough to remember: Technology was a console stereo in the living room with a turntable and an FM radio. I would sneak in late at night and plug in headphones so that I could listen to the rock music on the radio without waking up the rest of the house. It must have been early in the morning when I first heard Jeff's guitar and the Roland electric piano with the revolving speaker. Even after years, the sound is clean and tight and I don't know that any technological improvement or musical advance makes music better than this. It's clean and powerful with a craftmanship that is still unparalleled. I don't think that I had previously heard the fusion of rock and jazz before and nothing since has really been any better.
2009-11-04
9. Dripping with goodness... - Take s "police chase" theme music, add fused out jazz/funk, throw in some rock, and jam music and you might have an idea where this goes. It makes me laugh when I listen to it- not because it is funny (well, some of it is), but because it is so damn good. I don't smoke anymore, but for those that do, this is some real "ear candy" if you know what I mean...
2009-09-04
10. Perfect - Jeff beck is definately one of the besk guitar players of all time. This album is awesome the way he is able to express so much emotion by simply playing his guitar is amazing. Cause we've ended as lovers is one of the top ten guitar solos of all time for sure, that song is reason enough to get the album. In short one of the best guitar albums of all time
2009-05-23
11. Cause We Ended As Lovers RULES! - Bought this album when it was first released (still pristine) and since CD's, have NOT stopped playing it on a regular basis! AWESOME GUITAR! Whenever I play it, the sound level is cranked up, and I am once again blown away! All tracks on the CD are excellent - personal favorite is "Cause We Ended As Lovers"
2009-01-08
12. Top five of my collection - I have an extensive and,for lack of a better word, eclectic collection of recordings of just about every genre, amassed over a period of years. For pure musicianship and bravery, this album is the jewel of my collection, bringing to mind Sting's Dream of the Blue Turtles.I have played it more than any other album.I think if it was re-released in today's music atmosphere,it would be a tremendous crossover hit, especially in the jazz market.
2008-10-26
13. Desert island material - This should be on any short list of recordings you'd take into exile on a desert island. Simply a stunning album. Beck is inventive and expressive, and by working with the band instead of letting it work for him he creates powerful and diverse pieces. The drumwork is superbly rich, part of the dense rhythmic drive. One of the best fusion efforts ever and it easily stands the test of time.

1. CATCH AL ON TOUR FOR THIS ALBUM - I wore out the cassette, now I'm all over this great effort from Return to Forever's classy guitarist on the download. Al is back on tour in the US. Just caught him in Scottsdale, AZ with Billy Cobham. If they are coming anywhere within your hemisphere, catch them if you can. Al plays the entire Elegant Gypsy album and his band is tight and soars like an eagle. I love this recording and you will too!

2. Much Better these days - Fusion fan from the beginning and bought this masterpiece in vinyl (still have it too) first release. I must say, I love it even more today on better equipment (ie. digital). Al-Di is the focus of most of the comments I read, but look at the players on this album - like benchmarks in a who's who. Not many girlfriends into anything but disco at the time - this was the personal collection.
2014-11-19
3. Chops, Chops, and more Chops! - A terific follow-up to "Land of the Midnight Sun". Al rips it up as usual and lets every bandmate in on the fun just long enough to make it a collaborative effort. One of the soundtracks to my freshman year in college when most of my dormmates hadn't progressed past classic rock quite yet. I got asked to TURN IT DOWN frequently which is a sign you're doing something right!
2014-05-22
4. The Greatest - For me personally, Al Di Meola is the greatest guitar player that I have ever heard. His tremendous style and technique are evident on Elegant Gypsy. Ever since I first heard his work in , I have been hooked. It's like a chemical release in my brain whenever I hear his works of art. He may shun some of his earlier work, but this man is a true genius, whether we are talking about or and beyond. Pick up this album and give it a listen. You will be blown away.
2010-04-09
5. Essential - Why this release receives such a dismissive review, I cannot fathom. This is one of the greatest fusion records ever recorded. Al has a way with mixing variety and consistency to make this an interesting and enjoyable record. I would highly recommend this to anyone trying to get into fusion.
2008-08-01
6. Elegant Gypsy - I had this album in vinyl along time ago and I can honestly say it’s up there with the best. I spent many hours in awe of Al Di Meola’s, technique. I’ve been a drummer most of my life and not too many guitar guy’s have blown me away as these guys did on this album. The dueling guitars of Paco and Al in “Mediterranean Sundance”, is nothing short of awesome. That one song is worth the price of the album and the rest are whipped cream and a cherry on a masterpiece.

1. An Instant Classic! - Listening to this record in it's entirety is a true musical adventure. The fact that this is a LIVE recording is hard to comprehend while it's completely overtaking your musical senses with ridiculous virtuosos at very spot. 1. WR's Best Album - This album so full of Jazz/ Rock Fusion and at its very best. The music contain within is masterfull and colorful. I use to sit in my room and listen to Birdland, Teen Town and listen to the Masters of the Bass, Jaco Pastorious. The album is superb, but when CD's came out, you can hear every nuiance and flavors of every note played in the music. My advice to you you all who read this is to listen to this with your Headphones and buy the CD. With itunes, the high end sound is reduced and the Bass is muffled somewhat thanks to the internet capacity. Also, if you like Jaco, get all his albums that he is on and enjoy. Especially if you can find the CD's. From itunes? Only as a last resort!

2. Jaco Steals the Show - This is by far Weather Report's most approachable album. It has a sense of humor filled with bass funk led by super sideman the late Jaco Pastorius. Teen Town is simply the best air guitar bass lick ever invented. The hauntingly hypnotic A Remark You Made with Jaco's stunningly somber bass line is hopelessly addictive. Of course, Birdland is a blast and the rest of the album, while not much to write home about from Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul has a field day with his electronically induced funky keyboards. This is my all time favorite with no minute endless repetitive choruses like in Sweetnighter or Black Market. Get this one and love it forever!

3. Likable, listenable, pure FM Fun! - I heard this whole record while in High School when it came out. It was heavily played on the radio when released, especially Birdland. What's even more striking than the strength of every song is how they were created. All of the music here is broken down to enjoyable pop-Jazz ditties with excellent musicianship and creative compositions. It rarely happens with near-fusion related music. This is one of those instances. A timeless classic. Jaco Pastorious' bass playing is masterful.

1. Mysterious indeed ! - , I was finishing my senior year in High School...Lived in a small town with in earshot of the University of New Hampshire FM radio station.. Late one night, with my big old Koss headphones on heard the title cut..changed my life, realization that this what music was. not the top pap that my classmatees were listening to. Only problem, my parents heard these sounds coming out of my basement bedroom [complete with lava lamp and blacklight posters] and had a neighbor , who was in the FBI talk to me about the horrors of drug use...Still listening -- years later

2. Beauty from the height of th fusion era - Soaring, spacy, strange, beautiful, Mysterious Traveller stands as a testament to the Golden Age of the Fusion era. With much company in the genre, this album stands out in its expressivness and its restraint. No ten minute guitar solos here, just beautiful ensemble playing and creative arranging. It is really an album to treasure.

3. My introduction to Weather Report.... - ...took place sometime during my sophomore year of college in , upon the album's release. My best college friend, a rock and jazz drummer, played it for me one afternoon in his dorm room after a nice ingesting of cannabinoid smoke. "Nubian Sundance" immediately knocked me off my feet, set me on the path of being a Weather Report devotee, and I was with them all the way through the release of THIS IS THIS!, when they closed shop and went their separate ways. This was a band simply beyond definition--no one had ever come close to the sound that Zawinul & Shorter conceived, and MYSTERIOUS TRAVELLER could not have been a better route for me to have been turned on to their incredible music. Along with Return To Forever and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, fusion jazz ( --as I prefer to call it) took hold of me in the mid-s, along with progressive rock & electronic new age music...and gave me a much deeper, more grounded appreciation for original, inventive & experimental music.

4. Nothing Mysterious Here: Jazz Fusion - The title song on this album holds all that makes "jazz fusion" uniquely distinct from the commercial dilutions that commonly float in the air of malls and elevators today. Its apex can be found where we hear Wayne Shorter hold what can only be called a "blue note" on his tenor and soprano saxophone, simultaneously. Like listening to Louis Armstrong, we're outside of time, yet the track is framed in editing techniques stemming from In a Silent Way: Shorter obviously can't be playing both horns at the same time. Coming from a century-old culture, Weather Report pursues the electronic frontiers of jazz, par excellence.

5. my "gateway" drug - I bought this album by accident, while still in my 'progressive-rock-i-hate-jazz' adolescence. At first listen, I hated it (or so I told myself). But for some reason it didn't leave my turntable. For a month. And never for very long after that. It kept pulling me in. . . every listen seemed to reveal some harmony, some rhythm, that i hadn't noticed before. And it still does that, even now. This is not just a great jazz album. It is, hands down, just great music, even if you "hate jazz"!

6. Time mysteriously Tested - This album was my first exposure to Weather Report by recommendation of a dear friend and fellow drummer. First hearing was while in Jr. High. Took me aback at first: the rhythms and sounds being so foreign to a kid who liked Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Pink Floyd, and a wide range of other styles. But the album has truly stood the test of time as I add it to the cart this evening. As another reviewer aptly put it in so many words: "Relax and put on the headphones." Or do like I did in the late 's: Play it softly on a good stereo outdoors on a cloudless, quiet night. The amount and nature of musical expression contained in this recording is nearly inexhaustable.

7. Got me on the road - "Nubian Sundance ..." One day in Los Angeles, on KNAC when it was a classic FM alternative station rock station ... oh, say , John Clark started his show (the Import Show) with this song eventhough it wasn't, strictly speaking, an import. It remains to this day my favourite Weather Report song of all time ... worth a listen if you haven't heard it, and very other worldly. It made a big impact on my musical tastes, and so did John's show. Wonderful album.

8. No, really I think this is the Greatest Jazz Fusion Album of all Time! - I know that popular opinion is that Jaco was the " man". No question probably the best bass player of his generation, but in my mind, Alphonso Johnson really was the guy who defined how the rhythm section should sound like in order to complete Joe & Wayne's vision. This album was just so far ahead of it's time in terms of world beat, and was really the first to put more emphasis on the "Jazz" in Jazz/Rock fusion. My best Bud and I went to see two shows when they were touring in support of this release . Both times they were opening act on the bill, and both times we walked out halfway through the headliners sets, because we just didn't want to spoil the experience of what we had just heard from Weather Report. And we were huge fans of the headliners! One of my desert island disks. You will never find anything funkier than Cucumber Slumber.

9. Mysterious Masterpiece - iTunes doesn't mention this, so I will -- you're looking at Downbeat Magazine's Jazz Album of the Year from '. As strange as a rain forest, as powerful and frightening as a pagan rite, and as enigmatic as the Mona Lisa, this amazing album may have been the summit of fusion jazz's possibilities, before it all went melting into the vanilla mush of "Smooth Jazz". Strap on the earphones, and stop running around. Lie flat on your back, close your eyes, and be taken away from here. If you still know how to really listen, you will be amazed by this trip. A Mysterious Masterpiece.

1. Worth every $!! - I've been searching for this album for years, can't get it on c d and once I heard " Utopia " it brought it all back. This is not the commercial Todd that gave us " Hello it's me ". This is mainly instrumental jazz fusion similar to early Zappa with the Mothers or also Necktar, for those who know their music. The musicianship on this album is superb, Rundgren on guitar is great but not overbearing. Enjoy!
2012-01-27
2. Epic! - This is one of those albums that has never garnered the acclaim it so richly deserves. It is a masterwork created by an artist at the peak of his powers and his talented minions, barreling along the fusion and prog lanscapes and showing everybody else how it's done. I was really wowed since I didn't think he could top or even match the brilliance of "Todd". He succeeded! One of the main reasons that the 's were such a magical time musically was that an artist like TR could release an album as great as "Todd" and then follow it up during the same year with another classic like the st Utopia record!
2011-01-30
3. The Most Important Albem Ever! - I could write a lengthy Review using big word and compare it to other artists to make me seem self-important but the truth is there is nothing now, nor will there ever be anything that will compare to this album. It is quite simply the most important piece of music written in my lifetime. It takes you on a journey of the mind, spirit and soul. I have been listening to it for almost years and it still moves and delights me. Just imagine that “The Icon”, over minutes long is a live recording. Enjoy it!

4. Utopia: Take - I loved this album for all the right reasons. Put the "Todd is God" aside and you have the ultimate rock fusion orchestra. The only thing close was John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, or maybe the mania of Robert Fripp, and let's not forget that Adrien Belew had not yet joined forces with Fripp in King Crimson yet. So it was new, unique and outstanding at the time. But I would say this album raised more eyebrows by TR fans and critics alike. As cool and groundbreaking as it was, there was absolutely no market for it yet. To their credit, Utopia was widely listened to by other musicians. Later Utopia incarnations were much more "pop" driven, but they were still left of center enough for the band to expertly and tastefully push the envelope but never capture a sustainable audience. It was too bad, that they were too good, too far ahead and poorly promoted. Do yourself a favor, dive in to this one. Utopia urshered in a new type of rock band with a new and unique sound, jam-packed full of tasteful licks, and extremely musically tight performances. They also ignited a revolution of change in instrumental and later video technology.

5. Rock Fushion - This album in the mid 's was a classic rock fushion sound. Experimental, mind tripping and rocking. Totally different than the regular Rundgren albums that relied on lyrics as the hook. This was way more instrumental and if under the right enhancement of organic natural inhalement was the best audio experience possible at that time. After hearing this type of music it opened up a new genre to me .... Jazz Fushion. Thank you Utopia and Todd.
2006-04-26
6. A Different Kind Of Todd - I was introduced to Todd Rundgren and Utopia by a collage roommate in the mid-seventies. A lover of good pop tunes, I embraced Todd whole-heartedly. Then I listened to Todd Rundgren's Utopia, an album so different from his other pop-rock confections I hardly believed this was the same artist. This was (mostly) Fusion of the finest kind, as good or better as anything Weather Report or other true Fusion artists were producing. Not only clever and tight, it's intelligent. The half-hour long The Ikon not only fails to bore, it delightfully intertwines its themes, leaving you where you began and wanting more. And best of all, the album has worn well, quite as enjoyable today as it was years ago.

1. Reusing Ideas - I love Snarky Puppy and they’ve got a unique sound I’ve yet to see a group match. That being said this is not like some of their previous albums which had such a force of strength and passion to them. The album is exceptional featuring some great mastering, great sound, great tone; I just keep hearing ideas used in Culcha Vulcha which used ideas from previous albums such as Sylva. I think reusing assets is fine, but it’s too noticeable in some instances. In my opinion Snarky Puppy’s best albums are the live studio performances but this album is alright. Chonks is aggressive and motivational, and Coven has a similar ballad feel to it the way that Kite from We Like It Here has open and airy solos. All in all I wish Snarky Puppy would start pushing hard to reinvigorate their music because they’re one of the greatest collective of Grade- A musicians. Also here’s to hoping Sylva Vol. is in the works.

2. Spectacular and Deep - This album certainly has the booty-shakers that SP is known for but this album is deeper and more complex than that. Slap on the headphones and soak this one in for a while. Much like Sylva, this one took a while for me to fully appreciate what Mr. League and Co. we’re delivering but like Sylva, once realized, it is just spectacular. Thanks again guys for delivering not what we wanted, but what we didn’t know we needed.
2019-03-17
3. Okay but not great. - This album is bland and uninspired. Gone are the days of where Snarky Puppy put out dynamic albums like “We like it here”, “Ground Up” and “Bring Us the Bright”. Even the last time I saw them live was lack luster. It’s seem like they’re getting too comfortable and not pushing the envelope. Hope they take more chances with future releases.

1. Mindblowing genius - I heard Jaco for the first time on Weather Report's Heavy Weather and I followed him continuously thereafter. This work did not sit well at first because I was so used to the intamcy of Weather Report. However, this is pure genius and a must have for anyone that loves music regardless of being a jazz, rock, pop, classical fan. This is brilliant big band modern music genius.

2. Track ??? - I do not HATE this album - I once had a vinyl copy. However, replacing Track with the "live" version makes no sense. I did some research & found that the "live" recording can be found on "The Birthday Concert" album. Why a perfectly good song was replaced by a "live" version is beyond comprehension Therefore, I rated it as such & will not purchase it online unless the original album is made available for purchase. Younger people being introduced to Mr. Pastorious for the first time may want to consider this album, but, as someone who is familiar with his work (including Weather Report), should definitely skip this one until the ORIGINAL album is available.

1. I love Snarky Puppy, but this itunes album has issues - I'm a HUGE Snarky Puppy fan and got so addicted to Young Stuff after listening to it on YouTube for a while that I decided to buy it off of the album on iTunes. Sadly, I hadn't looked at the time stamp or I wouldn't have bought it, but the song cuts off!! Right in the middle of Michael League's solo, the track stops and that's how its sold through iTunes, not just my computer being wonky!! I tried to report a problem, but this was the only song out of the many I purchased where "report a problem" was not an option on the itunes receipt. I will gladly give this the review it deserves once something is fixed or people are reimbersed, but this is really embarrasing for them and a rip off for customers.

1. Another killer album from the Snarksters - I had the privilege of being part of the Live Studio Recording (Sat night March early show) at Deep Ellum in Dallas. What you hear on Bet! is what we heard through our headphones (see YouTube). No overdubs, no start overs, no “take it from’s…”. I’ve been a fan for years and they just keep getting better. It is probably their most funky album ever - take a listen to Take It! featuring the bands mentor & friend Bernard Wright on keyboards who died just a few months after the recording. I think there’s another Grammy coming!

1. I NEED MY SNARKY!!! - This helped provide the fix I needed after not seeing them live in due to CV. This is truly a group who, the more you know their backstory , the more you appreciate what comes out. Phenomenal. Couldn’t think of a group more deserving and the production quality matches the band’s musicianship. Bravo guys. And whoever rated it one star needs to go back to their Beiber and K-pop collection and leave real music to those who appreciate it. Or maybe their finger slipped...

1. Get Inner Mounting Flame or Birds of Fire - Having most of McLaughlin’s albums (including a virtually mint promo of this release due to lack of use), and as a current listener of his music old and new, this album may be safely skipped by anyone just finding the guitarist. It was distressing when it came out and still is. It has a lot of pop-funk which has never been the prime metier of this giant of jazz. All in the Family is ok but it sounds tepid compared with any of the Cobham/Hammer/Goodman/Laird Mahavishnu albums. You can almost imagine the record exec hovering over him, pressing him for something poppier. They made him take his shirt off for the cover, for pity’s sake, just like with Tony Williams (an absolute colossus of jazz drumming) on the cover of Believe it, which by the way, features another great guitarist, Allan Holdsworth. McLaughlin is a brilliant composer and didn’t deserve to be subjected to this sort of pandering to a market he was never going to fit into. Virtually every other McLaughlin release ever has fire and passion in the playing and composition throughout — get all of that, not this. Please.
2015-12-16
2. Mahavishnu Orch. - Last of the Mahavishnu Orchestra albums and while most of the album is tepid, there are enough cuts to make it worth buying. All in the Family is the best of the lot. In My Life is subtle, yet addictive. Gita conjures up frolicking in fields of flowers. And Inner Worlds sounds like what must be going on in McLaughlin's brain when trying to just get through a day. Not my favorite overall, but definitely worth keeping.
2015-05-13
3. Mahavishnu Orchestra is just the best music ever made. - You could call this Mahavishnu Orchestra III or you can just listen to it and understand that Mahavishnu John McLaughlin is simply the greatest guitar player who has ever lived and one of contemporary jazz's most un-heralded composers. ALL of the Mahavishnu Orchestra albums are superb, the greatest music ever made in my (and many others) opinion. Its impossible to compare these albums to other artists albums they can only be compared to other Mahavishnu discs. WWhile this is probably the most overlooked disc it truly has some of McLaughlins most exciting compositions and playing. If you dismissed this album because it does not have Ponty or Goodman or Hammer or Cobham you really missed out on a great great Mahavishnu release. stars only because I cannot give infinity. The greatest music ever made.\m/ Long Live Mahavishnu Orchestra \m/

1. A must have for guitarists!! - Regotheamigo is correct with all of his points. The guitar tones are fabulous! The technique of all the players is inspiring! The tunes rock, and are refreshingly original! The band was simply on fire that night, all the playing was in the pocket (and out of the pocket at precisely the right moments)! The recording was well done, feels like you're right there at the Potato (although I've never been there, sadly).

2. One of the best live guitar albums ever! - Jeff Kollman is the best guitar player that I have heard come along in a long time. He can go from blues, soul, funk, or country like there's no tomorrow. He always does it with style, feel, and just overall has the best soul of any player out there. I can only think of a few guitarist in the world that can pull that off, Eric Johnson, and Robben Ford are a couple that come to mind. Another thing I like about him is he not only has this amazing technique, but his guitar tones are the real stand out on this C.D. What can I say, I'm hooked!

1. modern feel and is heavier - Not like their other releases this one has more of a modern feel and is heavier and a bit less approachable (for the casual listener) but I eat this stuff up. 1. Wow! - As a professional musician, music student, and lover of music, this has to be one of the greatest albums I've ever laid ears on. This certainly has to be one of Ben's top albums. 2. Much More than Simply a Great Guitar Album. . . . - Guitar players, music heads, and jazz-friendly listeners: you really must hear—and I would suggest, buy—Ben Monder's amazing album "Hydra"—imagine Bill Frisell, Pat Martino and Terje Rypdal taking 'shrooms together, and inviting Brian Wilson, Gilberto Gil and Gyorgy Ligeti to create choral textures emanating from what shamans call "non-ordinary reality." Fans of Opeth and Mastodon's math-metal will even find plenty of harder motifs to dig on this ambitious and deep, deep record. Sonic sorcery, indeed . . .

1. The Best Lettieri Record To Date - This album truly showcases all the things Mark has pulled together in his career. From his time with Snarky Puppy to his Fearless Flyers endeavor, this record brings together both his experiences and influences into one perfect package. 2. Sunset Cruising Tunes - Earlier this year Mark dropped a Baritone Guitar groovefest with “Deep: The Baritone Sessions.” After wearing out the digital needle on that record and Snarky Puppy’s “Immigrance,” the last thing I expected was more tunes from Mark in . Turns out he had been hard at work pulling together another full release! This record picks up right where “Spark and Echo” left off and shows Lettieri and co. growing as a cohesive songwriting machine. Hop in the car and throw this one on. It’s perfect sunset highway driving music.

2. Blast from the past - Damn! I think I was at this show as well! It was fun to see P.C. stretching out on the drum kit, but Robinson's contribution was less than I had hoped for and he sort of dominated with a sound unfamiliar to early Brand X fans. Didn't compare to their powerful set at the Palladium when they opened for Supertramp (wise fans left after their set)

3. a great moment frozen in time - Brand X was one of several British bands that represented a point on the musical graph where American jazz-rock fusion (Weather Report, Return to Forever) met the pomp and circumstance of British prog rock. What made this band special was the participation of Phil Collins (and the Headhunters' Mike Clarke when Collins was unavailable), and a Python-ish sense of humor. (One of their song titles, "Algon", actually came from a Monty Python sketch.) Instead of focusing on long solos, Brand X was about atmosphere and a tendency toward odd-metered, if propulsive, rhythms. Collins seemed desperate to prove that he was a great drummer, and the evidence is pretty compelling. I was present at the show documented on this album. At a distance of years, it seems a shade quaint, a great moment frozen in time. But there is also a dark energy that still burns as startlingly as it did in . There are some wonderful riffs, like the turnaround on "Don't Make Waves" that Collins seems to relish as the tune vamps to a conclusion. Percy Jones is still every bit as original sounding a bass player. And the band is obviously feeding off an extremely enthusiastic New York audience. If you have a taste for fusion, or just want to hear a great drummer in his prime, check this one out.

1. Oh my god - I was just messing around on The Mars Volta wiki page and I clicked on the Jon Theodore link (drummer for TMV) and was looking at what other bands he has drummed in because he is probably my all time favorite drummer. And I saw that he was in HiM. At first I thought it was His Infernal Majesty and i was shocked at how low Jon Theodore could stoop. Then I looked up this album and was pleasantly surprised to find some dubby jazz wierdness and not that horrible goth crap by His Infernal Majesty.I think I'll just have to pick this one up.

2. Crème de la crème (take that Ville Valo) - Wow, you've got to be kidding me, right? Somehow, this album has not yet been carpet-bombed with bad reviews written by Chicago-jazz-fusion-hating-Finnish-goth-metal-afficionados. (Isotope albums don't get blasted by random A.F.I. fans, and Chicago Underground releases are safe from the ire of My Chemical Romance followers, but Doug Scharin's HiM can never escape being maligned by His Infernal Majesty fans. Funny.) I'm happy about this, because although I usually write a plea on behalf of all HiM albums, I actually want to write as glowing a review as possible for this particular one. It's definitely the highlight of HiM's discography. The dub and jazz elements wash over each other in a serene and bubbly mixture that would make Tortoise and Miles blush. I daresay the track "Clouds" might even mellow a rabid H.I.M. fan. Highly recommended.

1. Great Album from a Great Band - Finding these ablums from Brand X on iTunes has been a real treat. Theyre really isnt enough i can say about these guys. Since the 's they've brought us incredible music with wonderful musicianship and an original and unique approach to songwriting. Now, the only complaint i can give about this album, (and its not do to Brand X at all,) is after purchasing this download, some of the tracks skip. Yes, some of the songs actually skip. I thought maybe it was something wrong with my Mac or my iPod, but no matter what i do, some of the songs skip (like Stellerato, which is one of my favorites). I dont know if this was a downloading issue or an iTunes issue, but i hope that for future buyers this problem is corrected. all in all though, i think the music on this record more then speaks for itself and anyone who is interested should give these guys a real good listening to.

1. They are confused on the review - The reviewer has confused this with the other Electromagnets release. This one does not have Chris Geppert aka Christopher Cross on it as the first Electromagnets album had him singing backup on one track. He was never the singer for this band. This is a rawer set of songs than the first record and really represents the band more than anything other than the two live tracks added onto the first CD release of the original release. This one was also not released in . It was recorded in but never released until . Needless to say it is a must for guitar & jazz/rock/fusion fans.

EXCELLENT, CLASSIC BILLY COBHAM - I was just a kid when i went to my local record store to look for the newest missing persons record and for some reason i picked this LP up. i was always looking at cool drummer photos from rock books (copeland/phillips/cobham/peart) and was a drummer in the beginning stages of development. this record taught me more than i expected. i learned groove and space and fast, press rolls etc... the most exciting part of the record is the drum solo where billy displays the quiet passion of a genius drummer on the splash/bell cymbal tree and moves onto a raging snare, bass, toms section that goes deep into groove and polyrhythm.

1. More (Dedicated to Pat Metheny) - As a fan of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, this album really takes me back to that era. I actually was researching anything I might have missed from my already complete collection of Lyle Mays when I found this album. What an album. It's very smooth and entertaining. Make more you are good, whoever you are.

1. Greatest Live Album ever - I've waited my whole life for a band like my Magma to enter my life and now that I have found them I can be happy. I'm new to the Magma world and not tell you how amazing this whole live album is. Make the right decision and purchase this album. Kohntark and Hhai are the definite high points of the album, but Mekanik Zain is a sure great way to end it. Christian Vander and Jannick Top are the best drum and bass team of all time.

2. Magma's Best - In many ways, Magma Live (also known as "Hhai") is the best entry point into the world of this band. This is one of the best groups Christian Vander ever put together and they play as with a single mind. "Kohntark" (actually the title work of "Kohntarkosz") is better performed here than on their studio album. On "Hhai" the band effortlessly plays in / and / meters simultaneously, and Vander's drums sound better here than on nearly any other recording he's made. The group also avoids the soloistic self-indulgence that mars many of their later efforts (until the marvelous "K.A.").

1. Images and audio of Jeff Porcaro on my I -pad screen - Every time I see his face and listen to those drumbeats through my headphones. My heart starts misbehaving. I love hearing him talk about how he came up with the Rosanna Half Time Shuffle Groove.I am hoping to purchase a copy of the Starliks video on DVD that explains in detail all about that particular groove. So many popular artists sought him out for session work on their particular albums . Sandi Patti. Steely Dan and countless others used him for their background accompaniment. He will always remain the number one drummer who appears in my dreams playing drums on my heartstrings forever and ever. Meow Meow Meow . May his legacy live on and on. etc. I love him.

1. Essential listening - This is a brilliant album. The interplay between Holdsworth, Jeff Berlin, and Chad Wackerman is astounding. These are beautiful compositions that are mingled with excellent songs and vocals by Jack Bruce of Cream fame. Despite Ted Templeman’s misgivings this turned out perfect. Dig it.

1. Hidden Gem - I had no idea of this CD's release. I stumbled onto it while browsing ITunes. The SWR Big Band places a smokin' big band sound onto classics from several genres, while Larry slips in with both wicked and tasty solos. The Crusaders, Miles, Steely Dan and Larry himself are all covered, plus a great version of "My Favorite Things". You'll be tempted to play several tracks over and over, but play through the entire album first.
