1. Great book for novice/intermediate dog owners and dog caretakers - I recently began taking care of companions (mostly dogs) full-time and I was interested in gaining more knowledge about how to become a more fulfilling leader. This book gave me exactly what I was looking for, tips and tricks in order to reach a dog’s inner breed/personality. At times, it may take awhile to properly bond with a dog but once someone reaches that emotional level, they both will know it. It’s not just important to be a leader, but a leader and a friend at the same time. I do wish there was more in-depth information about the later years of these dog’s lives but I assume Cesar covers more information about the later years of other dogs in his other books.

2. This helped me so much - This helped me when I got my dog, and I’ve read it multiple times since then. I actually liked reading the autobiography part because I found it interesting. The training isn’t torturous. If you really look at his dogs, they are genuinely happy and healthy. Dogs can’t fake that.

3. How to Raise the Perfect Dog - This could just as easily been titled " How to Raise the Perfect Owner". Having just finished the book, I quickly opened a cozy mystery and within pages I read of a Labrador pup doing everything wrong and the protagonist allowing it. I'm thinking, "oh, no girl, you need to...". Thank you, sir.

4. Basic knowledge, but ultimately not enough meat on the bone. - This book lays the foundation and gets a good bit of the way there, but ultimately feels flat and incomplete. Cesar teeters between a new dog owners manual and an autobiography of personal stories and anecdotes. Somehow the two don’t quite mesh.

5. / - This book was incredibly helpful and descriptive. I pick up my cavalier puppy in days. How to Raise the Perfect Dog, along with one other breed-specific book, have prepared me for the long journey ahead. Cesar's methods are of positive reinforcement and patience. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone planning on or considering getting a puppy. Thank you Cesar!

6. I Use Cesar's Methods ! - Cesar's methods do work and I have fixed many problem dogs with his methods. I have learned a lot from him I never could have accomplished without him. I Thank Cesar for helping me learn how to better communicate properly with my dogs and others, and for the many dogs he himself has rehabilitated! He is blessed with a wonderful gift, he is a very heartwarming person of hope.

7. Perfect Puppy - This book clearly serves its purpose and clearly explains how to raise the perfect puppy. No ticks or gimmicks, just clear outlines of the necessary work of raising a new member of the family. Cornet jokes and written in plain language make this book an easy read. I wish every dog owner was required to read this book before they were allowed to adopt a dog!

8. Really? - I read this book and no where did I find Cesar advocating torture of dogs. People love to overreact. I can see many positive things from both sides. Positive training is great. But it also has it's flaws. It is unrealistic and impractical at times. It's people who love to jump on bandwagons and try to make themselves fell superior because they know more than the rest of us. Chill out and leave Cesar alone. He has done so many good things for animals.

9. Lacking - Was excited about founding out how to deal with our new puppy. Read the whole book and never learned any methods. Just talks about how you want the dog to behave, never how to achieve it. For example, puppy needs potty training, has an accident in the process, and this book never tells you what to do. Just that you don't want it to happen. Very disappointing.

10. Outstanding - I have seen his show the Dog Whisperer on several occasions and have enjoyed watching the transformations of the dogs he works with. After wonderful years of being with my dog Roxy, a rescue and losing her a few months back; I decided to raise a puppy to join my family & to fill the void of that extra heartbeat in the home. I decided on a yellow lab and although I was a little reticent about the breed I went ahead with my decision. Knowing of his work and learning of this book I purchased it immediately prior to our pup coming home. It has been a wonderful read, with anecdotal information, insights to the physiology & psychology of the species, & the reinforcing characteristics of being the Pack Leader. I am now looking forward to our pup coming home with much anticipation to begin laying the foundation for a calm submissive dog that will be balanced in our environment. This book has inspired me and I will highly recommend it to anyone looking to raise a puppy

11. Stephanie lee is right - While you may not believe poking your dog is dangerous it is. Cesar Millan uses old school methods that are proven to be not only dangerous but instill fear in your dog. Positive Reinforcement is scientifically proven to be the best method of training. If you care about your dog and want a happy pet that wants to do the behavior you want instead of doing a behavior because of fear of what will happen to them if they don't, then don't follow Cesar Millans methods, but instead buy a book or go to a trainer that uses positive reinforcement.

12. This is a bedtime story. Don't purchase if you want improvement. - Ok Caesar, thanks for the touching story. This is not a "how to" book! Purchase this if you want to read a Bio. or a touching, reminiscent story of Mr. Caesar, and how he came to be so special. Vague, and misleading advertising. I want my money back.
2012-12-13
13. Awesome book - WOW Stephanie Lee obviously does not know what she's doing, this book has absolutely no "danger" in it. All Cesar does is tell us how to use common sense. He explains how to properly discipline your dog when she breaks the rules. In no part of the book does he say to do more then a simple touch (or poke) your dog to snap the mind away from whatever it is she is fixated on, whether it's another dog, human, or anything else. How she interpreted the tools and techniques in this book as dangerous is beyond me. This book tells you how all your actions and moods are interpreted by your dog and gives you an idea of how your dog feels throughout her young life. I have a month old boxer and I have used Cesar's techniques since I got her. Although she has tested my patients many times it's amazing to see her slow down and focus on me when I just take a deep breath and relax but remain assertive. It's when I become angry that she doesn't listen to me and starts bouncing off the walls. Again, this book is not dangerous and is a great book, good luck raising your new puppy.

1. Zak George - I watch the videos often because I’m probably getting a dog soon. We sent in the application and are very excited. These reviews are a big help and love the book. To clarify this book isn’t really for people who’ve already had a dog. Pretty much just the basics on training a first puppy.

2. BEST DOG BOOK - If you have a new pup or thinking about adding a furry family memeber READ THIS BOOK! It’s got everything you need . From a checklist of what to have before bringing to her furry friend home to tips & tricks with in depth how to videos . This would also make a great gift if you know of anything getting a pup or just got one!

3. A loving and inspiring approach - I have a four and a half month old rescue pup who has gotten some of the basics in this book down and is LOVING the positive reinforcement and inside out approach. She’s come in gone through curious chewing phases and still acts out here and there but is much happier when we guide her what to chew and use gentle corrections and treat lures. I recommend this book to any new or existing pet owner. Gonna go back and read again :)

4. Save your money - This book didn’t say anything anyone who’s had dogs already knows. Every problem i was hoping to find help with either wasn’t in the book or skimmed over (like digging). the accompanying videos are half Zak promoting the book you e already bought. If you know the basics of positive reinforcement, this book will not help

5. The real deal! - The best thing you could ever do for yourself and your new pup is read this book. It’s an easy no nonsense everything you need to know about your new pup. Once you start reading it you won’t want to put it down. It gives you so much confidence, takes a big load off your shoulders. You won’t do anything but succeed it’s amazing I am so thankful for this book. And access to all the videos that go along with the training, it’s a must have! Thanks

6. So far so awesome - I have a male cockapoo puppy who is months old. I don’t have any experience with training dogs since he is my first dog. I have been training him with the techniques in this book since I got him a month ago, and they work! It has taken plenty of effort on my part, but simply following the instructions - with plenty of repetition - has worked great with my pup.

7. Life-Changing - My wife and I have been considering a dog for quite some time now. Through reading this book we realized that we are very capable and excited to bond with and train a dog of our very own. Although we have not yet found our perfect pup I have had the opportunity to to implement many of Zak’s methods taught in this book with a twelve year old beagle. The beagle belongs to my in-laws and has never been trained at all. Although he is an old dog with many bad habits we have created a new bond with him that has given him an entirely new quality of life. He has learned ten new tricks and counting, as well as how to properly play fetch, and walk nicely on leash. We are so excited to get our own dog in the near future and have an amazing bond with a well trained dog all due to the knowledge we gained from reading this fantastic book.

8. Awesome - Great positive form of dog training! First saw the author's youtube dog training videos about positive reinforcement training and was happy to see he also wrote a book on it. He focuses mainly on the fact that we should train our dogs in a positive and sincere manner before any negative behavior even occurs. He has found the balance between the various forms of training and created a way for us to have dialogue with our furbabies! Other topics other than training include basic care, hygiene, how to pick a trainer, a vet, and much more. Overall a very good book and an easy read. I look forward to implementing his techniques when I bring home my furbaby in another month!

1. Loved this book! - There are so many valuable tips and tricks (and also what not to-do’s) that I learned from this book. The penny bottle is so effective in many areas, even for my stubborn and playful little German Shepherd girl who has her own ideas for the day! Definitely worth reading and referring back to over and over! This book will help me build strong bonds with the rest of the dogs that come into my life.

2. Amazing techniques - This is the second dog training book I’ve read so far. The techniques he uses make so much sense to me and they are simple and straightforward. The book is even entertaining to read and not dry like the other book I read. I started reading because we want to add another dog to our family and I like the idea of rescuing a shelter dog. What I realized was how much I could have been doing with our year old dog that we already have. I have applied some of his techniques and I have bonded more with our “stubborn and difficult to train” dog more in the last month than I have in the last years we have had him. Highly recommend.

3. a must read for positive dog training! - Excellent book…Easy to read and understand…Who knew that a bottle of coins could be such an important training tool!
Thank you Brandon for reminding us to be patient and calm while training and to love our "trainees" as unconditionally as they love us. If there is to be a second book, I will look forward to reading it.

1. Love the youtube channel don’t care for the book - Way too biased. Not enough balance. Quit reading when he said that breed doesn’t dictate behavior. Sometimes this can be true but heelers absolutely nip to heard! Thats what they are bred to do. I think overall he is a great trainer I just felt like the whole story wasn’t being told in most examples.

1. So much good information. Maybe too much. - I’ve been a dog parent nearly my entire life. During my early s, I read How to be Your Dog’s Best Friend, and it was an amazing, transformative text in how to raise a dog to be happy and healthy. The same is true for The Art of Raising a Puppy. Information, tips, and insights I still don’t know about dogs after years. I truly love these books, rereading them frequently as reference texts. So why stars and not ? A lot of the experiences are ideal state. And I get that’s where the monks want every dog owner and breeder to go to - the ideal state. But it doesn’t reflect the reality so many dog owners encounter when they get a puppy. Most breeders are caring and always trying to improve, but I’ve never met any that give, for example, aptitude tests to puppies before placing them with families. I’m super impressed the monks do some of these things, but perhaps instead of giving us the exacting lengths they go to as the only way, perhaps more of a good/better/best approach to descriptions of breeder appraoches and behaviors would make some of us searching for a new puppy feel like we don’t have to wait years to be properly paired with just the right puppy and spend $K or more for the ideal dog. I finished the book feeling like neither I nor the breeder who provided my pup were nearly good enough for the monks and that I should feel like I and my dog are inferior because we didn’t go to the extreme lengths the monks did. If I read this before dog ownership, I’m not sure any breeder would have made the cut. Let’s maybe give everybody multiple models with a clear indication of what’s an absolute no-go rather than purely the very best as the only model in every single situation.

2. The mystery of the beast - This book has really helped me as I raise a puppy for the first time. Interesting mix of the spiritual and practical. I followed the book’s advice and bought a Starmark training collar — my wife was amazed at how quickly our little beast walked on a leash without pulling or jumping.

3. Loved it! - I am getting a Bernese Mountain dog in a few months so I felt the need to prepare. Having never owned my own dog before, I wanted to do as much research as possible. This book provides so much information that I feel better prepared for my pup. I'll refer back to it when the time nears so I can be the best dog owner possible. This book has gotten me very excited about dog ownership. The stories and ways they speak about dogs is truly inspirational.

1. Great Guide for all Dog Lovers - I’ve had dogs all my life. My vet recommended this book for our new puppy and I’m so glad she did. There is so much useful information, and many of the tips and explanations are new to me. I wished I had picked up this book years ago, when some of our other dogs were pups.

2. Aweful - It’s not a real Apple Book, like most all you will find where it adapts to your screen size, allowing you to customize for dark mode, fonts, size, highlight text etc, rather this is simpy a leader boxed PDF. Hoped at least the content would be descent but is rather aweful. Based on the author’s title as a Doctor and DVM, MS added a sense of credence but she opens with information that would suggest she is not a good person to listen to on this topic, so assume the information was more gathered from general sources rather than her own life long knowledge. She is against all corrections as associates with hitting a baby even though unlike Primates, Canines mother’s always provide subtle and appropriate corrections to their pups. She seems confused with what an age appropriate correction means, and rather says she can’t imagine putting her puppy in a choke collar. Of course not, why would any one put a puppy who is starting fresh in one. Simply awful.

3. Best puppy training book - As a veterinarian this book clearly outlines the important life skills of socialization - accepting all the noises, situations, people, places and other animals that make up a life in a household. 4. Stupid title - This book is a total reject i mean even the title is wrong. A perfect puppy is one that is happy sweet loves you and is loved back so when you try to make a "perfect" puppy in a book that's like saying "I'm going to make these kids perfect in a month!" It's one thing to train a puppy but I'm and I know what a perfect puppy is.The author is stupid for thinking anything else.

We spoiled our last little dog so much- fine for back then, but in reading about how to do it again we will also do it better, kinder, as well as with happiness! and maybe we will keep our bed ours this time!!! 1. Excellent reading - I've learned so much about the psychology of dogs which is the key to raising a happy, well balanced dog. More often than not, we tend to see them as our little babies and do not respect their animal nature which in return comes back to us as our dogs having issues.. I recommend this book highly especially to people who bring a dog home for the first time, but not only to them.. to everyone who want to have a healthy, well behaved, four legged family member.. Happy reading.

2. Being the pack leader - This book showed me how to be the pack leader of my five dogs. I never knew how important it was to walk my dogs to reinforce my leadership instead of just to get the dogs to relieve themselves. I learned how to be calm , assertive and to project this energy to my dogs to get them to submit. My relationship with all my animals has been enriched because of what I learned from Caesar. Thank you!

3. Cesar's Way - Very insightful. I see now that the dogs I had when I was younger were not better dogs than the ones I have now, I was a better leader. I recently adopted a two year old with aggression to other people. This book painfully helped me realize that I have already made mistakes with him, and need to change my ways fast. Be the person I want to be and the dog needs me to be.

1. Perfect - A very good book for learning dog language and for understanding your dog. Concise, with pictures and examples. My dog and I communicate much better and I’m able to calm her down. I can’t recommend this book enough. I’ve read most of Cesar Milan’s books and found them helpful, but this one really cracked the communication barrier.

1. Amazing. Covers all you need to know. - I bought this book to read through before I adopted my first dog (. years old, lbs, mix of breeds) from the shelter. I was already taking care of a Maltipoo (about same age) so I had an idea of how to take care of a dog, but wanted to take it a step further and expand my knowledge. It’s been months since owning my dog and I just finished this book today. While there are many things that are (or should be ahhaha) common sense for the self disciplined dog owner, this book covers way more. As a result, my relationship with my dog is great. Everyone in the dog park comments on how well mannered and healthy he is. There is still much to do in terms of rearing up my young dog, but this book has opened my eyes on the humbling experience of being a proper dog owner. Highly recommended for ANY dog owner.

2. The best dog training book - This book is something that was given to me as a gift, and I feel so fortunate to have ever read such an amazing training manual. The insight into what makes a dog a dog is quite amazing. I think that My dogs have turned out to be very well behaved dogs in no small part because of the excellent methods prescribed by this book. My dedication and consistency was the other factor of course. I can't tell you how much I love this book!

3. Every animal owner needs your books - I recently bought a German Shepherd male week old puppy from Phil Skoog - Von Waldenberg German Shepherds and upon my purchase of this ever so beautiful animal I asked what books were good to help me learn to care and raise a GSD. I was told that both your books were by far the best and I must tell you, that was the best piece of information I could have ever gotten. I have raised Lhasa Apsa's and shown champions for many years but never had a large breed dog before so I felt I needed more information to raise my beautiful boy properly. Your books give me so much information that I think every animal owner, especially large breed dog owners should buy them and read them. No matter what you think you know or how much you know, both books by The Monks of New Skete will teach you the many things that the other books won't. As a dog owner for over years even I have learned things that I never even heard of or would have thought of. Thank you so very much for writing both of your outstanding books. They are both worth their price in gold and I am so thankful that you shared all the information in them. I am following everything to a "T" so that my boy lives a very happy and healthy life and one well trained. The best purchase I've made on the app store

1. Helpful, but my relationship was so much more - After losing my darling year old Papillon just over months ago, I never thought life could go on; I'm still not sure. She was more than a dog, she was my daughter. I had her before her birth. Sonograms, on the phone during her birth, multiple photos daily until I picked her up at weeks. It we like an adoption of a human child, but felt more like I had a surrogate carrying my child. Dior, was always there with me. I never left her home alone, only with my mother, father or close friends for short times. She went on every holiday, and on every form on transportation except for sky-diving and hang-gliding. She had been to every continent (including Antarctica and the Galapagos Island), save Australia & New Zealand due to their - week quarantine for dogs. She was a trained service dog, but it was I who lived in her service. We were each other's "owners." I always have and still hate that word. She was my daughter, I her mother. My grief is deep and wide. This book has found a sort of similarity between my girl and Dean's. Both of our families knew how much our canine children meant to us, and the devastation that their deaths would cause in our lives. My family, friends and colleagues never thought my relationship was odd, and I am a neurosurgeon. People would argue as to who was "babysitting" her while I was performing surgery. She used her own form of sign language to get what she wanted, and people understood roughly % of the time. There will never be another like her; like my baby Dior, who died way too young. The book was cathartic, but in the end made me wish that I could look over and see Dior on the end of the sofa ready to go out for a run, or ready to play. Instead, I look in another direction and see her cremains, a lock of her hair, and a final paw print that the crematorium put together for me. I am an atheist, but I now understand why people invented deities; it gives you something/one to blame when things go wrong.

2. An Excellent, Life Appreciating Read - I can't express how enlightening and heartfelt this book is. Dean Koontz absolutely makes the reader completely fall in love with Trixie and, probably not on purpose, he and his wife as well. Their dedication to their special girl and the effect on their lives she had was so personal and touching to read. It definitely reaffirms my belief in destiny and magical things, beyond our traditional understanding. And love... So much love. Buy this book and enjoy the journey; you will not regret it.

3. A Big Little Life....What I learned. - I wasn't sure this nook would interest me,but it ended up making my heart soar with joy.
I learned about Ted's conversion to wonder and joy and God because of the innocence and play of his adopted daughter. One learns a great deal about Koontz and how his philosophy of life developed and is so richly enjoyed in his books.
I had just finished his latest,"Innocence", which is a life changer and now I see the seed planted for this amazing book.

4. A Big Little Life - It has been a long time since I have had a dog. My wife and I have had cats and are cat lovers. However, this book about this wonderful and amazing dog makes me want to go out and get a dog. Perhaps even a Golden Retriever and maybe even from CCI. Mr. Koontz's writing so vividly displays the beauty and wonder of "Man's best Friend" and in this case Woman's too that we as humans can enjoy so deeply the love we give and the love we receive from our domesticated animals. This book assisted me in opening up my mind more than it was before, and it was already opened to these beliefs, to understand and look at the lives of animals as a wonderful opportunity to enjoy them even more in part because Mr. Koontz so eloquently widened my consciousnesses to more and deeper insight into animals. This wonderful Big Little book is a worthy read for many reasons. For that and more of what I mentioned above and also as a way to know more about the author his wife and his life that I did not know before. His profound abilities to write incredible tales of strangeness had made me think that he was more like Hannibal Lector than a kind and generous man with a beautiful mind. The book shows an obvious desire to share with the world his thoughts and beliefs of our souls, life and death, healing and understanding, beauty and love and to do so while sharing an important part of his and his wife's life and that of their beloved pet Trixie Koontz. If you loved animals you will likely love them even more after reading this very fine book.

5. Milo - I have a month old golden retriever that I picked from a litter of pups from an illegal pet peddler. She fell gravely ill on the rd day with me and almost died. She is now a bouncy kg beautiful girl. And in many ways, her survival was reflective of my own, and I think she saved me in many more ways than I realized. She is the same stoic spirit like Trixie.

6. For dog lovers - The book includes some narrative on Mr. Koontz's life and childhood, but it is mostly a story about how much love and joy a special Golden Retriever brought into his life. As a parent of a special Golden myself I found it to be a sweet and heartfelt book. If you love dogs especially Golden's you will enjoy the book and cry at the ending.

1. Huge disappointment - I found this book to be full of stories relating to his past trainings. Even though they are some what relevant, the book truly doesn't help you correct an unruly dog. Team Dog's greatest help is teaching the reader how to carry his or herself when training their dog. Team Dog is also exceptional when talking about how to assert pack structure and correcting behavioral problems. Thank you Mike Ritland for an exceptional read; I also enjoyed reading about Toby's story and progress.

What the world needs now... - In a time when people breed dogs and birds for fighting to the death, when nature is slaughtered for a few pieces of ivory or fur, and our climate threatens the inanimate material stuff we've come to place too much value upon, this story speaks volumes about the importance of respect for all living things. Thank you for sharing the your story so poignantly Ms.Pepperberg... You now owe me a box of Kleenex!

1. Best dog communication book out there - I have small breed dogs. When I got my first one he was manageable, but once I got my second one things went to heck. I’ve been reading, watching, practicing and consuming every dog training and dog communication and dog psychology course I could find for the last years. Occasionally we made a tiny bit of progress but out of an entire course only one tip would do anything. It was really slow going and a very discouraging way to learn to control my pack. This book and it’s secrets of dog language and dog leadership system have opened my eyes to a whole new world. I finally feel in control and I can live with my dogs in a calm manner, having their respect for my leadership. Cannot give this book enough praise!! Also, love his YouTube channel “Martin McKenna” (the dreadlock dog man).
