1. She did it again - I stopped everything I was doing and reading when this book came out and it did not disappoint! This is a beautiful, brilliant, hilarious take on new motherhood and adulthood. I’m expecting my first so this couldn’t have come at a better time but I believe I would’ve enjoyed it just as much even without a baby on the way. Jessi Klein is an incredible author with a unique voice. Both of her books are some of my favorite memoirs.

1. Anthropecene Reviewed, Reviewed - I wonder if John Green ever looks at his accolades and asks if he really deserves them. All the awards, all the kind words about his work. I personally have a lot of difficulty believing anything good anyone has to say about what I make, even when I know it’s good too. If he ever reads my review of his book on reviews, I hope he believes me when I say I believe he’s made a star book.

2. My favorite of John Green’s works thus far. - I have been a fan of John Green since I was in high school, and I’ve read his books over and over, but this one is definitely my favorite. It’s beautifully written, and thought provoking. It’s full of insight. And I even learned about a lot of things I didn’t know previously. I definitely recommend this book.

1. So Good - I wish I could climb into this book and live inside of it. Didion’s masterful use of language creates a vivid and compelling depiction of life in s California. The book is rich with details that make a good story yet lacks all of the unnecessary frills that often lose the attention or interest of the reader. I could not recommend this book more.

1. Explicit Content - Potential readers should be warned that the first story contains pretty explicit language. It’s not a story about sex, it’s a story about a reporter covering the sex industry. Unfortunately it’s hard to quote people from the sex industry without including a lot of not family or work safe dialog. This story is _WAY_ more graphic than other books tagged as explicit in the iBooks Store.

2. Serious format issues - Let me be clear that the essays themselves, which are basically reprints of articles DFW wrote for various magazines in the early 's, are superb. The main issue is that the footnotes are not well placed, in the sense that when you tap on a footnote to read it, tapping "back to text" at the end of the note often brings you a page or two away from the original text. Furthermore, footnotes of footnotes (this is DFW after all) are uniformly denoted with a " ", so that when you tap a footnote's footnote, you're taken to a page with a number of short paragraphs or sentences all denoted with an asterisk, and no way of knowing which one is the one you want until you've read a few of them, and even then sometimes you're not really sure. To make things worse, sometimes the footnote navigation texts aren't hyperlinked at all, forcing you to click "back to text" on an adjacent footnote and hope for the best. Worst of all is the exclusion of the essay "Host" because of a claimed inability to reproduce the formatting. It was originally written for the Atlantic Monthly and they have it on their website as of this writing, with the atypical formatting (arrows and boxes of text and such) restyled as footnotes. In sum, Consider the Lobster on iBooks is readable, if unnecessarily mangled.

1. Great Book for Patchett Fans - Note: I received This is the Story of a Happy Marriage from TLC Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. I've been an Ann Patchett fan for years. I loved State of Wonder and adored The Patron Saint of Liars, so when I was given the opportunity to read about Ann Patchett by Ann Patchett, I jumped. And boy, am I glad I did! Confession: I had no idea she started out writing magazine articles. I consider myself to be pretty up-to-snuff when it comes to the writing histories of authors I love, but for some reason I never did much Patchett research. I think this is probably a good thing because it lent an air of mystery to her work. My favorite essay from the book was The Getaway Car. In it, she discusses how she became a writer and gives advice (like don't get an MFA because it's a waste of money) and her self-deprecating process of writing a book. In it, she details the circumstances surrounding writing The Patron Saint of Liars, which is my favorite book by her, and I loved reading the backstory. I think I might actually go back and reread it now that I have some insight into her writing processes. Voracious readers will love this book. As a writer who is writing about writing (follow all that?), Patchett's love for all things literary is palpable. I, for one, relished in her descriptions of reading, wanting to be a writer as a kid, putting pen to paper, and actually put down the book to write a short, personal essay just because she inspired me. But enough talking about the book. Run to the library and borrow your copy NOW! Allison @ The Book Wheel

1. Small Victories - I have always enjoyed the musings of Anne Lamott, and was happy to see she had written a new book. But instead of pithy insights, she wrote a great deal of her disdain for George Bush. If I had wanted to read a critique of him, I could have chosen a political book. This was a disappointment and I do not recommend it.

1. Random Thoughts on the Writer’s Craft - Annie Dillard is a Pulitzer Prize winning Poet, Essayist and Novelist whose work I read many years ago. She married a friend of mine and I’ve followed her work over the years. Since I’ve been doing a little writing recently, I thought I would read her thoughts on the craft. That’s exactly what the bulk of this brief work is: a Stream of Consciousness of her thoughts as she has struggled with the challenges the writer faces when they sit down with the blank page. It’s not a step by step how-to manual but rather a scattering of notions that go through one’s mind during the process. That said, just hearing the thoughts of an accomplished author and sympathizing with her experiences has value to anyone who enjoys writing or even reading. Four stars. I might add that her final story about the work of a professional acrobatic performance pilot and his bi-plane on how he sees his art is worth the price of admission.
