1. Captures the imagination from a historical standpoint - This story sheds a light into the world of high society, art, travel and segregation in the s. The secret of living as a white person afforded Belle a great life but cost her soul. A True but sad historical fiction that is intriguing. My view of the past is forever changed in a way that was needed! Great book you will not want to put down!

2. Loved a lot about this book - Great story that makes me want to know about Belle, JPMorgan, their amazing library and collections. And architecture. Loved learning about this wonderfully successful woman of color! Am Definitely going to read some non- fiction about this topic and these people. Some parts of the story felt simplified and repetitive…made me curious about why the story was told that way. I’m sure there was a reason.

3. Too didactic in tone; not my cup of tea! - Stopped reading after the abortion. Fascinated by the historical character, but the authors went a bit too far in the assumption that there was an unwanted child. The Belle of this book is far too haughty and self-absorbed. I’m reading the biography instead.

4. Beautifully written - I read this book after seeing it in the gift shop at the JPMorgan library in NYC. It was amazing to read the book and reflect on photos I took while visiting. Belle’s story is amazing and written so well, I thank Marie and Victoria for their work and passion poured into this masterpiece.

5. Engrossing - The Personal Librarian was one of the best books I have read. It captured my interest immediately and sustained it throughout. I was fortunate to visit The Morgan Library & Museum in NY which enhanced my appreciation of both the book and this gem of an institution. I strongly recommend the book and, at a minimum, a virtual visit of the Library.

6. Outstanding, Captivating, Phenomenal! - I have come to fall in love with Belle de Costa Greene as a audacious, courageous, African American woman who I did not know of. This historical fiction brings to life an era in American history that should remind us of the imperfect imbalance in our society today. The Personal Librarian tells the story of a courageous woman, who had to do what she had to do to not only survive, but thrive.

1. This book pulls you in like the tide... - What a great storyline with characters that you can feel and smell. Reading this book is like partaking of the special holiday dessert you only eat once a year with family. I couldn't put it down. The writer pulls you in... sets down a plate and sits with you as you respond, “Mmmm, this is really good.” Well done.

2. A Story About Heritage - This was BEAUTIFUL. I found myself on an emotional roller coaster. I was angry, sad, regretful, and happy all throughout this book. It’s a powerful story about a brother and sister finally learning the prices their parents (mainly their mom) had to pay for them to have the opportunities they did. It was also about the pressure that first generation Americans can feel when keeping these sacrifices in mind. Loved all the characters and loved the ending.

3. Black Cake expanded my Caribbean taste - Every once in a while a book captures your soul. I’ve visited several islands in the Caribbean. I’ve acquired a love for island foods and cultures. Black Cake took me to a place full of the taste, smells and sights I so often relish. Not only is it a marvelous read, but the history, cultures, and heartbreak is a lesson itself. Rarely do I read a book more than once. But I can’t wait for the day while soaking up the Caribbean sun and reading Black Cake all over again.

1. Important history in a compelling tale - “Doing what’s best” for someone else often has unintended consequences. Read the story of nurse Civil Townsend, trying to do what she thinks is best for a pair of young Black sisters in Alabama. Based on disturbing historical fact, this well written tale comes at a time when once again, women’s reproductive rights are being determined by those who think they know what’s best for someone else.

2. Heart grasping truths unfolded. - Alternating between & in Montgomery, Alabama, this novel takes you on a heart grasping journey of a nurse and young black girls and a healthcare system & government that took what wasn’t theirs and didn’t give what it should have- their right to choose. The blood & chosen family bond through love, loss, triumphs, & pain. It is a reminder of how little this country has come in reproductive rights, yet how significantly far we have to go. It also re-inspired me that we individually & collectively can make a difference.

3. Medical Historical - Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez is Historical Fiction about a black nurse in Montgomery, Alabama. Civil, a new nurse, thinks she can make a difference by working in a Family Planning Clinic. Civil had an unwanted pregnancy and wished to teach and encourage her patients prevention rather than use abortion as birth control knowing her own difficult experience. A brilliantly written book that describes evil, poverty and conditions that most will find difficult to believe. It reminds us how government agencies and others have used their power to control people and achieve their goals. Have the medical methods and experiments with people really changed in the last hundred years? Does any government have the right to make choices for us or is it our right to make our own choices for our lives? Experimentation starts with those who are considered lower class, weak, poor, uneducated, and will eventually come for all of us except those considered the elite. I appreciated the author sharing all the long lasting impacts on each person and each family involved.
Ms Perkins-Valdez has written a story based on real history that makes it clear that we must watch for any government treatments, medicine, and experiments, especially those forced without any real informed consent. For anyone who is not aware of what our government was capable of in the past and is capable of today, don't miss Take My Hand and the author’s note. Beware your eyes will be opened and this story will haunt you.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. I appreciate the opportunity and thank the author and publisher for allowing me to read, enjoy and review this book. Unforgettable! Bravo! Stars

1. Powerful read - I normally pick books that are a bit lighter, chick flick types but after reading reviews on this one I decided to read it. It’s a very powerful book that portrays history in a raw and honest way. It shows that slavery and injustice isn’t just ancient history and that it still echos all around us today. But we can do better. We can be better. And there’s hope and good in the world if we take the time to look for it and be it.

2. Beautiful Novel About Ancestral Movement & Memory - This is a beautifully written novel that captures the lasting impact of ancestral movement and memory as it traces one family’s journey pre-slave trade to present day. It depicts the full range of the human experience and the complexity of life under imperialism and white domination. There is love, disappointment, triumph, heartbreak, resistance, and joy. I highly recommend this read.

3. Generations of Heartbreak - When a stone hits glass the crater from the impact flares into a web of disjointed lines. Each strand a different length and depth from the others. This is the image that comes to mind when reading this novel. The single pain of glass of a family lineage, fractured over and over again until you can’t tell where the breaks emanated from. Yaa Gyasi’s time and perspective jumping story of family, slavery, and Africa is simply amazing. Each chapter a vignette into the cascading damage and heartbreak from the generation before. The gaps between each characters perspective fill up the imagination with untold images and nuance, like the space between the sentences that Hemingway would write. This book gives a powerful response to those who want to move on from the slavery and Jim Crow of so long ago. Perfectly depicting how the trauma ripples through time. The waves of heartbreak eating away at the shore of bloodlines, country, and dreams. The redeeming and healing power of love is the thread that keeps the trauma from destroying everything.

4. The Best Book I’ve read since I started High School - I don’t know where to begin to praise this book. You will not want to put it down. The narrative and story telling of this book is amazing and you will be amazed at the connections, even the smallest bit, can make you weep for the characters. The empathy I gained from this book is something a book has never done for me.

5. Time and Place - An astounding book. I am a black American with a Ghanaian name with no known lineage connecting me to Ghana. I have also led a Ghana Study Abroad program for a decade, and have navigated fire and water, in this book the sense of disconnection, the desire to connect, the questioning of traditions, the joy and pain of belonging. This book captures all of these feeling powerfully and eloquently. It’s propulsion through and time and place challenge both ideas; I finished recalling a timelessness and a placelessness that is at the core of critical reflection on identity and heritage. Thank you for this work.

6. Homegoing, Yaa Gyasi - Assuming the research was done with the same quality as the writing, it is perhaps one of the most important historical novels I’ve read. Completely objective, amazingly creative, perfectly structured and gramatically flawless (which I greatly appreciate, even correctly used nauseated rather than nascious). I don’t know that I’ve enjoyed a book, or had my eyes opened by one more. Yaa, I am deeply grateful.

7. Good novel - By going back to Africa and starting the story, the author makes this story more inclusive. She manages to capture a large gap of time without making you feel you want to know more about missing time periods. Her characters seem real and likable. You sense behind the story you are also getting a history lesson.

8. Homegoing - One of the best historical reads ever!! I was transported, tasted, smelled, saw, and could feel every single place, emotion, sights, food-
It was like taking a time travel trip through history. So enlightening, no matter what your skin color, or belief system is. Best book I've read in a very, very, long time. Do your mind a favor, and read this incredible journey of a story!

9. Amazing story - This book has been compared to Roots. I think it’s better. Traces families from slave to present times. Stories weave through the families, and cover an amazing amount of history. The author researched the historical facts, and I really enjoyed it. With all the racial unrest in the world, I think this was a very timely book. I highly recommend it.

1. Beautifully written emotional story - Maame by Jessica George is an intense and emotional look at a young woman's life, neglected by her parents, and yet giving her life to caring for her father. Story Recap:
Maggie’s life in London is far from what she expected to be doing as a young woman. She mostly cares for her father, who is suffering from advanced-stage Parkinson’s. Her mother spends most of her time in Ghana, and her brother has his own life on the other side of the city, leaving Maggie to be the primary caretaker of her father. When her mother returns from Ghana, Maggie takes her chance to live again in London finally. She finds a flatshare and moves in with two other young women. They go out for drinks, and Maggie finally feels like she’s starting to live the life she’s always wanted. But, when tragedy strikes, Maggie is forced to re-evaluate her life and move forward. My Thoughts: Maame is an intense and emotional book, that took me on a very satisfying emotional journey. Maggie’s parents are both Ghanaian immigrants and I enjoyed and was fascinated by the look into Ghana culture. The characters are all very different, some I liked, and some I didn’t. But, Maggie is a beautiful, well-developed character that I couldn’t help rooting for. Her father doesn’t talk much anymore and her mother is out of the picture for the first part of the book. I wondered why her mother and brother left her to care for her father on her own. They are both oblivious to the amount of work and time that goes into caring for her father. This book highlights the needs and issues of being a caregiver. When Maggie finally gets the chance to go out and live in the “real world” her naivety and vulnerability were beautifully described, and like Maggie, I felt both excited and afraid for her as she entered the world of dating and friends. Even the characters I didn’t like, like Maggie's mother, were well-developed with emotional backstories, which made the book deep and full-bodied. The pacing was good, I never felt like I needed a break, nor did it ever feel like it dragged. Recommendation: I highly recommend Maame to anyone who enjoys fiction. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

2. Highly Recommend! - I absolutely loved this book from the characters to the story, it was so well done! I can see why this book is getting lots of attention! Maddie’s life is complicated, she works full time as a personal assistant in marketing at Covent Garden Theatre in London, while taking care of her father who has Parkinson’s. Her mother lives full time in Ghana running a hotel that her father left to her when he died. Her mother is overbearing and frequently asks for money to be sent. Maddie’s brother no longer lives at home, so its left up to Maddie to take care of her father. When her brother is asked, he can never help financially or with the caring of their father. Maddie doesn’t like her office jobs, so frequently jumps from job to job. Her back aches from lifting her father and mentally she is not happy. Once her mother plans to move back for year, her mother insists she move out in order to live life and find a husband. Can she find her way or will her life continue to spiral out of control? This author takes the serious topics of Parkinson’s disease, caregiving, death of a parent, racism, depression, friendships, panic attacks, complicated relationships and weaves it into a meaningful, engaging and entertaining story! A story that keeps you thinking about it even after it’s done! A great book club pick as it will lead to many good discussions!

1. Buy This Book!!! - An amazing book! The story will pull you in and make you keep turning the pages. As an amateur violinist, I really enjoyed all of the musical details (but you don’t have to know music to appreciate the book). I’m appalled by the way the author has been treated during his life, and by the echo of that which is described in the book. What is wrong with so many humans?? A thought-provoking read. An intriguing mystery. Solid, exacting writing. Buy the book - you won’t regret it!

2. Art imitates life, fiction imitates reality - Ray experiences controversial topics that should be reflected on IRL. Like most, Ray never discovers how to indict his family for being as unapologetically vicious as rabid strangers. No safe haven among the “cultured intellectuals” either. How do either keep their status? Why does the world award so much credibility to and yearn to be in systems steeped in unethical behavior?

1. Unraveling Dreams - It is hard to believe that this book os Nathan Harris’ debut novel. For a first attempt he crafted a story that is concurrently as old as time and fresh in vision. A journey of varied personas interweaving and displacing each other simultaneously. The stories culminating into a single vista that shows us the unraveling of reality brought on by the outcomes and violence of war. Setting the story in the promise and disappointment of the Reconstruction period dredges up old wounds and conflicts. A fresh coat of paint is applied to this worn picture using distinct marginalized and harried voices we don’t often get to see from this time period. There is no rosy retelling of a broken past but instead a recasting of how hope springs from the ashes of heartbreak. Harris demonstrates unique talent in how his character building by way of the thoughtful clarity he gives to each voice and artful word craft. The combination presents the reader with glimpses into the power of dreams and nightmares alike. Showing us how the hopes and fears of each character motivates each towards their true self. I don’t envy Nathan Harris for the task he has now of following up this brilliant work.

2. The Sweetness Of Water - I absolutely Loved Nathan’s precise description to detail, from beginning to end. It was not hard at all to envision each character, personality, emotion or scenery. This book is a screenplay all set for motion. A Great Read Indeed. Thank You Nathan Parker for your talents and gift.

3. Boring - When I read the synopsis of the book I was intrigued. This book had so much potential, but it’s started off so slow. I wanted to like this book;however, every time I sat down to read it I lost interest in minutes. I read pages and it never drew me in. Oprah really needs to fix her book taste cause this isn’t the first time she’s disappointed me

4. Not a Bad First Effort, But…. - This was a slow read that took a long time to get somewhere. It’s ok, but honestly it seems contrived, with over wrought writing, and a mostly unbelievable storyline. Worth a read if you suspend belief. But the impression is left that history was ignored to write this. Surprised it’s an Oprah pick.

5. Almost, but not a total waste of time. - I wanted to like this book, I really did, but unfortunately the zing I expected never materialized. Unfortunately I recommended it to a couple of friends before I got no more than halfway into it, expecting better things to come, but they never arrived. Friends, please forgive me for jumping the gun on this one.

6. Amazing - Have you ever wished that books would reveal themselves to you on the shelf? I am beautifully written, full of characters that will befriend you, and a story that you won’t be able to put down, the book would say.... I am only on Ch. , but I have not been able to put The Sweetness of Water down. Listen when this one book beckons you—you will not be sorry.

1. One of the best books I’ve read - I purchased the book years ago and have read it probably times. Each time I read it I focus on a different character and each time I learn something that missed before. Sister Souljah is a genius with word and in storytelling. This is a must read and no mater when you read it, you can relate it to your life right here and now. I need this to be a movie/television series. I would love to see who plays each character.

2. Winter made me mad - So I was introduced to this author by a friend and honestly buying her books is one of the best investments I made inna minute. Anyways Winter had me red like shorty . I thought you would a learned from you daddy went down. But you just kept thinking you couldn't be out smarted . Lol I was happy when she got locked up am just saying she had it coming

3. Emotionally draining - If I had the ability to transform into a book I would pick this book... I wanted so much for so one to take Winter and sit her down and show her that she has so much more to give to her life ..and the road she was taking would only lead to death or jail ..just so happen the latter was the option ..but I think if she had someone who who have never given up on her she could have been saved from the latter ..my heart broke for ever dumb and young mistake she continued to make. Emotionally exhausting!!

4. A good read if you like urban novels !! - The books storyline is interesting and at times relatable if you come from a family with relatives involved in some illegal businesses lol. I would definitely recommend if you want to be shocked and hanging on to your seat as you see Winter Santiaga navigates her life. I also recommend the sequel !!

5. Good Read! - I love the style and voice of the narrator which is Winter! I was able to visualize every detail of the book. Some things were actually relatable while very enlighten in regards to drug dealers, familiar neighborhoods, & relationships, etc. It kept me wanting to read more & get into the other books which gives the perspectives of the other significant characters mentioned in this book. Definitely a page turner & truly a good read if you like suspense & hood-like stories.

6. My favorite book EVER. - I am years old and first read this book when I was and it has been my favorite book ever since. I’ve read it so many times. There are so many lessons and gems in this book, which is why I often return to it. A lot of people have stated they didn’t like the ending but to me the ending was perfect because it was REAL. This is what happens when you live the kind of lifestyle Winter was living and I think that’s the whole point S.S. was trying to make. If you haven’t read this book do yourself a favor and dive in.

2. GREAT BOOK! - I loveeeeeddd this book! the ending wasn't what I expected :( had me a lil emotionally lol. but a line in the book that stuck with me was what Raven's mom told her " a woman can't change a man, but a man can change a woman in the worst way" so true! this book should be a movie , I would most def go see it . 1. Enthralling & Provocative - This debut thriller was terrifying and well constructed… I didn’t have a conclusive answer to the mystery until the very end. “Jackal” made me cringe and made me angry. It is a timely ‘fairy tale’, told with all the style and gruesome imagery of the great Grimm brothers fashion.

1. WTH is this!? - This book has no correlation to the Coldest Winter Ever. I loved that book and read it so many times. This book doesn’t even feel like it’s written by the same person. If you’re a gamer, it’s giving Saints Row. I don’t know who gave her the OK to release this but it was not worth it.

2. Favorite urban Dante’s inferno fusion! - If you love soul searching and smart soliloquy and urban realness look no further! This book really had me relating to winter ! Though I would of learned a lil sooner at - when I was bout and under I would have been doing the most just like her! I loved this I have no complaints probably my favorite books of all time both coldest winter and also life after death .

3. Horrid at best - Writing is difficult, writing well seems impossible at times. But writing something as bad as this book is the real challenge. This book is filled with unappealing imagery that hardly allows the reader the space or opportunity to dive into the world. The dialogue is repetitive with a clip of this and that which quickly gets old.

4. Slow starter but great ending - Normally I read all of SS books within - days but this took me weeks to get into. But once I was there I was there!!! And at the end I knew my life will forever be changed. I googled the Karan and asked a few of my Muslim friends for word pronunciation of some words. All I can say is thank you. If your goal was to reach soul you reached mine. Thank you. Namaste

5. Love love love it! - This book was EVERYTHING!!! Do you hear me?!?!.. I’m kinda late writing a review but I literally read this book in hours of it being released. I also read this book times because I felt like I missed something. I just knew Winter wasn’t going to learn her lesson. But she came out stronger and better.

6. Trash! - This book is CHEEKS!!!! How it went from the best hood/power story to some underworld sci-fi foolery is beyond me! I was so excited when I seen a sequel was released… I had any confused face you can imagine chapters in… guess what, it didn’t get any better. This is the first review I’ve ever written. This review is better than the book unfortunately

7. Not what I expected - It took me a while to get into this book. With all of the other Sistah Soldier books, I loved them so much I was done with the book in a day or two, this one was months. I would have liked to read more about Winter and her interactions with the core characters of the series. Hopefully her next book will incorporate that.
2021-07-09
8. Not Sure What This Was - Long story short this was disappointing. This makes me question if she really wrote the first book. It felt like it was all over the place, it was too long and very confusing. This could have been a great book. Winter is still dumb after all these years and didn't grow with the readers. After my second attempt I decided to stop reading. I made it to chp .

9. Unexpected, yet, POWERFUL message! - After years, fans have anticipated the culmination of the Winter Santiaga story. Although the setting of the story is unexpected, the message is undeniably powerful. Anyone who is familiar with Sista Soulja before she became an author should not be surprised by a powerful message woven through her work! I encourage all Sista Soulja fans to read until the end. She’s laying gems of wisdom at the feet of young women who idolize certain lifestyles and food for thought to all those who think they are doing ‘better than most’ and think they are above reaching a tragic outcome but also hope to folks who may feel they are beyond mercy. Don’t sleep on this book because of the entitlement of others who feel they should have a say-so in the creative works of an artist. This book is dope, creative, different, deep and well written. This book is a mirror! Thought provoking to say the least.

10. Wasn’t what I thought - The book would be and the beginning started off real slow but picked up more as you read. The twist of the story really makes you think of you’re own life and the wrongs and rights that we all may have to answer to one day, overall I enjoyed the read and the spin off from the first Novel “The Coldest winter ever”. Sister Souljah makes you open up your mind on a deeper spiritual level when it comes to life and death.
2021-04-03
11. Thumbs up - I actually liked the book as a whole! If you can get past the character turning into animals, it does make you self reflect on your own life and think am I walking the right path to go to heaven on my afterlife. I would say it’s not as hot as the original the coldest winter ever but I get what she was trying to say and do with the book.
2021-03-25
12. Hate it - First of all she’s literally dead & a demon of some sort able to see & hear what’s going on. It’s disturbing and stupid in my opinion. The most horrible follow up ever ! The first book was very close to reality so to make the nd one pure fiction didn’t even make sense. I kept thinking she was dreaming she died & woke up but that never happen, skip this!
2021-03-24
13. Definitely Different - Peace.. I will say this. It wasn’t what I was expecting. However reading this book did enlighten my thoughts about life after.. Even though she spooked it up to much for this crowd, maybe she’s going in a different direction to introduce new techniques and make readers feel that she has spoken to all in her own way.. I’d read it again but not like the first.. change is good and constant. Peace..

14. Deeply disappointed!! - I didn’t enjoy this book at all. It’s all over the place. I’m far from judgmental but there are some weird things that made me completely uncomfortable. I don’t understand how this could possibly be a sequel to The Coldest Winter Ever. I’m so disappointed. I really wish I could get my money back. I don’t want to give any stars but I don’t have a choice. Here is one just so I can submit my review.

1. Disappointing Novel! - The Second House from the Corner by Sadeqa Johnson is a woman whining about her life (the complaining never stops). Felicia Lyons is an actress turned stay-at-home mom in New Jersey. She has three children under the age of four and a husband who is rarely home (as well as sexist, lazy, has a temper, and keeps her on a tight leash). Then one day she gets a call from her past. A past that Preston, her husband, knows nothing about. This call (really the man behind the call) has the power to ruin her life (if she lets it). Will Felicia make the right choices? I did not like reading The Second House from the Corner. I had a hard time getting through Felicia’s whining (about her kids, her husband, housework, etc.). Felicia is an extremely unpleasant character. The Second House from the Corner contained foul language (too much of it) and sex (explicit). It also had an extremely odd ending. I give The Second House from the Corner out of stars. I just found the book to be unenjoyable, and I really had to force myself to finish it (not a good thing). This book was just not for me. I received a complimentary copy of The Second House from the Corner from NetGalley in exchange for an honest evaluation of the novel.

1. Bittersweet Reality Check - This story left me with nothing but an acute awareness that the people I love and hold close to my heart will not be around forever; no matter how much I want/need them to be. After finishing this book, you may want to kiss the significant other in your life and express your feelings of affection for them before it’s too late.

2. Had to Read for English and I'm Glad I Did! - At first I was a little weary of this book. I've only ever loved one book that was a required read for school and that was "Catcher in the Rye." I'm not a big fan of historical fiction normally as I'm more of a sci-fi and fantasy girl so I was expecting to hate this book. I was happily surprised however! The plot started out slow but quickly picked itself up. I actually wanted to read ahead of my class and looked forward to when new pages were assigned. I found the main character relatable and a good case study on how relationships should and shouldn't work. It tackles big issues on womanhood and growing up with amazing word choice and elegant ways of pointing out the most obvious things. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who has an open mind and is ready to open it further. Very amazing book!

3. Amazing! - For my summer project for junior year of high school (two summers ago), I had to read this book. The second I picked up the book, it completely drew me in and I was mesmerized. I do see a lot of myself in Janie, falling in love, seeing the love was not right, and later repeating it until she found Tea Cake. Janie, in my opinion started out naive, like most girls such as myself do when it comes to falling in love, but I was very proud of her when she left her first husband, Logan, and when she started to stand up for herself when Joe started abusing her. This book was amazing, and will ALWAYS and forever be a favorite of mine. Even though it's been a year since I've read this book, I still talk about it to this day, and yes still cry over it. This book is honestly a must read.

4. Simply incredible. - I don't write reviews but people need to know how incredible this book is. I had to read this in high school for AP Literature. It easily became my favorite book from high school. The way it is written in her tongue takes some getting used to but it really makes you feel like you are the main character and like you see from her eyes.

5. Phenomenal - This book rewrote the definition of who I am, without my permission. Don't read it if you scare easy. This book moved me from one end of myself to other, then blew my heart wide open and took me by the hand and walked me around the edges of the explosion, poimtig out the mess and explaining why we so beautiful, all of us.

1. ELECTRIC! - Wired Fear (Paradise Crime Book ) by Toby Neal is electric! This novel may be read as a stand alone but to fully understand the characters as well as the impassioned feelings between the characters, it should be read in the order in which it was written. It will totally change your perspective on this novel! Super Tech Sleuth Sophie Ang & partner Jake Dunn have opened a new branch office of Security Solutions on the Big Island. Sophie is desperately working on living a “normal” live after all she’s been through and Jake is doing his best to support her. Things are going almost too smoothly. They should have known that would be a short term situation! Quickly everything changes. There are major crises all around. The biggest has to with Sophie and choices she must make that will determine the course of her future. As always, Neal has provided her readers with an excellent plot that keeps you engaged from start to finish. Her characters are complex with none being more so than Sophie! With the setting being the gorgeous background of Hawaii, who would ever complain? Neal always teaches her readers a little more about the Islands, it’s culture and its people. I was provided an ARC of this book by the author. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.

2. Wired Fear - Omg! I love, love, LOVE Toby Neal!!! This book is everything that I hoped and so much more!! Toby did an outstanding job again. After surviving yet another attempt on her life, Sophie finds that life has thrown her another curve and what a curve it is! She finally realizes with whom her heart lies and I’m beyond excited about her choice! Her mother, while somewhat useful but not without a price, remains an issue but Sophie refuses to let her barge into her life and attempt to control her. Things are changing for Sophie and she may finally be well on her way to a long deserved healing path. I’m so super excited for Sophie and where her new journey takes her. I can’t wait for her next adventure!

3. WIRED FEAR - Cousins that owe favors to one another, when one is a District Attorney, and the other of crime. Justify’s by saying the family needs you. With tools Akane now feels in power once again after the trial, and revenge the name of the game. The list, with the female investigator at the top, and her partner. The Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, her firm gives a grant to it each year, has come to the new security offices of Sophie and Jake’s. Discrete with them being outsiders to look at missing money. For Sophie, she still has revenge against her mother. In this she becomes more real, and readers will like that. How does Jake play into this role, we hope permentaly. For Jake, his love is strong, and always goes that extra for her.The story is real, captivating, page turner, full of action, the author has gone beyond giving us another drama filled story. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

4. What a roller coaster ride! - Once again Toby Neal has written a winner! I loved this book so much and hated for it to end! The characters we all love (and some we hate), make appearances in this book and omg the story just grabs you and won’t let go! There are surprises that some may not have seen coming! There is so much that happens in this book that I just can’t stop thinking about it. This is one book you won’t want to miss out on! If you love a good love triangle and if you love twists and turns in a book and action and suspense, this is the book for you!

5. Toby Neal has done it again! - Wow! Sophie is back, and I really enjoyed following her again as she navigates her world of relationships. Who will win her - Alika, Connor, or Jake? What will we learn about the enigma that is Pim Wat? Can Dr. Wilson help her with the many dilemmas she faces? Surprises abound in this must read continuation of the Wired series. It really should be picked up as a film script…it’s that good!

1. Great story of redemption! - This book took me into a world that I have never experienced, but was always curious about how it all worked. Iceberg Slim described his life, which showed how he got his start as a Pimp, but he did not glorify it, in fact, he basically advised against this way of life. He did a great job of walking the reader through his thought process, and how he left that life and found fulfillment. I will be reading the rest of his books.

2. Grammatical errors - “She bad no idea of the lesbian kick, so naturally she couldn’t know she was a target.” Instead of "She had no idea of the lesbian kick, so..." You understand my drift. Get it fix because I was really debating on whether I should download it on my iPod or go to B&N to pick it up.

3. Pimp - It's not always pretty but it's always real. This book tells a story of a man that became a legend in the secret society of Pimps and ho's. You travel back in time where you see the birth of the modern Pimp and Hustler. It's dynamic and colorful. A riveting read. A unprecedented look into the mind of this urban legend that had since never been duplicated. A must read for anyone who has the slightest curiosity about any master manipulator and first class motivator.

1. Great Story - This is an amazing, comical story of life, struggle, and growth. The story gets better over time and by the end one falls in love with each character and their journey. At first, it appeared to be a slow read without much meaning. However, you soon learn that each chapter had a unique purpose in the story of Deacon King Kong.

2. Beautiful - This books starts off so rocky. The names alone are enough to make you stop reading. But they also so intriguing you want to know more about what the heck is going on. The development of each character evolves into the people you know someway or another. No matter what walk of life you are from you can relate to someone in this book. This is the first book that I have read by McBride but I will say he captured what it means to build a community. It truly does take a village and sometimes your village is surrounded by demons but with faith and trust in what is right God smiles on you and gives you exactly what you need to be the best version of yourself. Bravo for showing the world that good old fashion values are always what is most important no matter what walk of life you come from or what is thrown in your way. Even a fast ball!!

3. Spike Lee in literature form - Absolutely loved DKK from start to finish. Such an eclectic cast of characters that I found myself constantly going back to re-read so I could fully process and re-process all of the rich details McBride includes about them. The story can be heavy, but is ultimately an uplifting community tale filled with humor that really reminded me of what I love about Spike Lee’s filmography (which is funny, since Lee adapted McBride’s “Miracle at St. Anna”). Strongly recommend this for anyone looking for something that’s a fun read, yet thoroughly thought provoking.

4. Long Live Deacon King Kong! - So, if you're southern then this book will speak it you in such a gracious way. The dialect reminded me of my grandparents. It was such an easy read what actually spoke about so heavy issues. It was funny. It was loving. And it was compassionate. A great read for troubling times.

1. So good but possible gaslighting - I preordered this book based off the few pages I was allowed to read. It’s amazing! I read it in two days! My only dislike is Larry is now stating he didn’t killed Donna and I remembered that differently in family business book . Other than that, I can’t wait for the next book to come out! The ending is a definitely leading to another season of family business.

1. My new favorite book!! - Bolu did her thing writing this book, I love how she incorporated the Yoruba language and aave. She really allows us to picture the plot and what’s going on, being Yoruba myself allowed me to enjoy the book even more. Love Kikiola and Malakai. She also taught me something new at the end of the book in the acknowledgments when she talks about twins and how the second one is actually the oldest for sending the youngest out first to see if the world is a place they want to be in. Honestly. out of . There’s nothing more I can say or that she could write that could make me love this book even more!

1. Black Love Song - Honoree Fanonne Jeffers has created a brilliant master piece in this sweeping historical fiction. It is a love song to everything Black culture and a epic in its scope. It reminded me of Marquez’s “ Years of Solitude” but with the magical realism expressed in the emotional kaleidoscope of the Black and Native experience in America from time immemorial. You will not get through this fast. Resign yourself to be only a long spiritual journey through a family against the racially tinged struggle that is America. If you venture to read “The Love Songs…” please please please first read “The Souls of Black Folk,” “The Project,” “Caste,” and any other books you can on the unabashed history of America. You cannot truly appreciate the fiction part of this historical fiction until the gritty history is baked into your DNA. Only then will you realize how brilliantly Jeffers has weaved in multiple narratives and threads into this one tome. Through her well thought out characters we get an all too personalized retelling of our collective history as it concerns every facet of life. Those deep dives into various topics make every page a journey of historical reckoning, navigating academia and it’s rigors, love and loss, race relations, blood ties, and so much more. The bitter reality it is painted against makes the collective stories feel like our own in a laugh out loud, cry out when triggered, reflective in others kind of way. It is everyone’s story and Ailey’s at the same time. I sincerely believe W.E.B Du Bois would have been proud of Jeffers bringing his long cherished pieces into the present with what I think has to be her Magnum Opus.

2. Beautifully crafted - This narrative was exceptionally crafted, detailing both Black trauma and triumphs by exploring history on a deep level. Intertwining the lived realities of Black ancestry with the present-day, one takes a journey from the inception of colonization and the brutalities of slavery to dive into the multi-layered challenges faced by Black communities on a micro-level as equality is fought for through the centuries. This work is truly illuminating, capturing the battle for Black livelihood with education serving as a vessel to combat systemic oppression.

3. Enthralling Family Epic that touches many spectrum of the black experience - This book is nothing short of amazing—the layers of family history, strength and courage that prevailed in spite of the trauma is humbling. I found myself laughing, crying and unpacking many of the things in my life and history that I hadn’t gave voice to—This book gives VOICE to stories that are typically not told in detail, the underpinnings that you don’t understand and cannot see but are pivotal to understanding why people are who they are and act the way they do. As a black woman who hails from a South Carolina native and African lineage—it echoes the truths of my ancestors. I am so grateful that the author is a willing vessel of the divine ancestors to bring forth this important work. This book came to life—healing, inspiration, pride and self love were all things that the journey through “The Love Songs…” gifted me and my life. Powerful and timeless. I usually move on quickly to my next read, but I need a period of processing with this one. May we continue to be the best of our ancestors and triumph over all limitations and curses that they couldn’t. Keche.

4. Amazing - Ailey and her family feel so real. Each woman’s story told was so interesting. It made me desperate to know the stories of the women who came before me in my family.
I want to discuss this book with others. History, racism, feminism, rape, drug addiction, marriage….so much more A great read

1. Darkest child - One of the saddest books I ever read. Insanity, disfunction, miss guided beliefs and morals ran rampant through this world. Sometimes I didn’t believe it could happen or I refused to believe. The writing was moving and painted the characters in colors of hope when ever there was a chance in this very sad story.

2. The Darkest Child - Don’t read this book if your looking for a happy outcome. This book is not for the light hearted. It was hard to read but hard to put down. It’s set at the beginning of the civil rights movement so reading how black people were treated is disheartening and unbelievably sad but very truthful. You have that whole dimension then the main characters treatment of her children and the outcomes of their lives is just dark. Like I said don’t read if your looking for a happy outcome but this book definitely draws you in and you have to get to the end to see if something changes.

3. The Darkest Child - I just finished reading this book. I loved it, it really resonated with me! All the characters in this book were in search of some type of love that just seemed to elude them. The only thing that remained was pain, hurt and miscommunication! You would assume that Rosie was the antagonist, but you would be wrong, just like her kids, she learned her behavior somewhere!

4. Engrossing...A Real Page Turner - I enjoyed this read thoroughly. It provided an insight to post plantation life and had all the scandalized elements of a juicy family saga. The main character's ability to forgive seemed to be over the top and a tad unrealistic when it came to her sadistic mother, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the story.

5. The Darkest Child - This book ripped my heart out by the way Rosie treated her daughters and sons . I want to claw her face out for her daughters sake. Tangy Mae is a strong woman if ever I saw one. I wanted to keep reading to see if she made it out town and if she got that scholarship.
Harrowing and unthinkable to think that situations like this go on every day.

1. The Prada Plan - This book was everything!! I loved it. I cried like a baby in the end because of how i thought things would end with YaYa and Indie although I wanted her to be with Ethic it's amazing how strong love is and how your loyalty to one person husband or not can draw you back to them no matter how much wrong they've done or how much they hurt you! You've done an amazing job and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to read the book!

1. - Didn't care for the book. Too many POV's so it got confusing, and it jumped around a lot. I like urban books but this one was no Bueno. Didn't even care to read the rest of the book after Q died. I'll give it a thumbs down and a waste of a lot of money. The book should be dollars if even that. Horrible book.
