1. Call the Midwife: Shadows of the Workhouse - I found it very very interesting and informative. I am in my eighties and knew my parents never wanted to go to the workhouse and they didn't have to even living in their early and middle nineties. Education is so very important and my children and grandchildren are well education.

2. Call the Midwife books - Being a nurse, I not only enjoyed learning about nursing during this era in England, but the stories of the people are simply amazing. The author gave new insights into situations that I had not considered before, as well as smiles and even laughter. I loved them both, and am thrilled to learn there is a third book.

1. Amazing. - Phenomenal book! The author is truly talented. I find the honesty and depth of her memoirs to be breath-taking! It's amazing how she has put words to these feelings. The confusion that a person with an eating disorder goes through is almost impossible to sort out and Hornbacker has such clarity through out this book that I find, speaks to many of us.

2. Butchered - I demand a refund. I own the actual book, and this ebook has completely butchered it. The first thing I noticed were the typos - too many to count, and there are none in the book. Second is word word replacement. Third is cutting out complete scenes! Why do this? I am outraged and want my money back.

1. Not your average book! - I read this years ago when it initially was published in and didn’t think it would become one of my favorite books. Typically, I am into mysteries or true crime and while this book technically falls into the “crime” genre, it’s not at all what you’d expect. Frankly, I did not expect to love this book but I’ve read it at least four times and it’s one that I’d recommend to anyone looking to read something different!

2. In the Sanctuary of Outcasts - What a treasure! This book is profound, “real”, moving, funny and affected me deeply. I love Neil White’s writing and so appreciate his sharing what, to me, is his amazing spiritual growth during a time of imprisonment that would have probably left others embittered and vengeful. Thank you for sharing your epiphany, Neil!

3. Don't Bother - I thought this would be a book about the lives of the patients the author encounters during his incarceration, maybe some real information on the history of leprosy in this country, but it turned out to be nothing more than a long-winded exercise in telling the reader about how successful he had been before his incarceration. Don't waste your time.
2014-06-29
4. Not very insightful - The story is not very compelling. When the author describes his experiences, it is just a re-hash of his life and crimes. There is very little revealed about leprosy. He basically wrote a book about passing people in the halls in a prison. It could have been much more detailed and insightful.

5. Moving and quick - "In the Sanctuary of Outcasts" is a moving book and a quick read. That is partially because it is difficult to put down the story of Neil White's year of soul searching among a prior generation's outcasts. "In the Sanctuary of Outcasts" is, however, a tale of redemption half told, ending with Mr. White's release from prison, but without having necessarily learned the lessons from Carville. In that regard, the Epilogue provides brief hints at a larger story that remains to be told.

1. A disappointment - I loved the first two books in this series but this was a disappointment. I found it depressing and lacking in new stories about the midwives themselves. I feel that the chapters wrapping up the main characters' storylines could have been added to the end of the second book and this volume could have been left unwritten.

1. Very Interesting! - This book was great and had a lot of description. I loved learning of the beliefs and everyday life in Africa. The story flowed ok… I just have something to say if you are about to read the book. If you even think you are a slow reader, set goals for yourself in this book. I tried without a goal for the third of the book, and it turned out horribly. The book can go by slowly (especially this one) but if you are determined, it will be a breeze. I just don’t get why it talks more about the “famine” more than it talks about the actual windmill. It kind of threw me off guard at first because it didn’t go right into the topic of the book. But other than that, this book was extremely fascinating and I am planning to read similar books by the author!

2. This book is an exhilarating story that inspires one’s true potential - This book is an exhilarating story that inspires one’s true potential, and shows you how much one person can do to change their way of life. Reading this will show you just how much willpower and drive a person can have to accomplish the things they need.

3. Incredibly inspiring - I had to read this book for school but I immediately fell in love with the writing style and description of Malawian culture. Kamkwamba used what he had—curiosity, determination, and a scrapyard; to create what he didn’t—electricity. I’m not a sciency person, but Kamkwamba’s descriptions were interesting and there was so much more to the story than his experiments. If nothing else, I walked away from the book incredibly inspired. Do yourself a favor and read this book!

4. Amazing story about a boy never giving up. - First time I ever read anything in detail about Malawi. This boy's story of his hardship & disappointments growing up & him developing a plan by continued research, using the resources available is amazing. I recommend this book for all young people. Never give up!

1. Historical - Though the movie isn't anything close to reality it gives a glimpse into the life of Alan Turing. Hodges is exhaustive in his exploration of Alan and the times before, during and after WWII leading to the development of the first digital computer. At times, there is more exploration of who Alan Turing was and it helps to understand his challenges in business not just his lifestyle. Few would understand the politics and global issues of building what was never done before.
2016-02-22
2. Badly written - The author is very fond of himself. He seems to be more interested in quoting irrelevant passages that he has read on unconnected subjects. He expresses his own opinions on the period but many of his suppositions about Turing's thinking is wild guesswork which is probably inaccurate. Lots of unexplained foreign expressions. Perhaps the movie is better - I hope so!
2015-02-09
3. Very poor writing - Goes into way too much detail for me regarding math and the intricacies of code-breaking and building a computer. He also refers to many obscure events and books without explanation. A sure sign that his aim is more to impress than elucidate, he quotes in other languages without translation. Very poorly written.

4. Alan Turing the enigma - For those who are savvy in math and engineering
You could stay interested for the whole story
As for myself I was looking for more of a story around breaking the code of the enigma machine during ww. This really is the story of how the computer came into being, and Allen Turing place in it. In today's world he would have been rich and famous and the founder of Microsoft

1. Hey “ Star Shibumi” - You must have read some other book before reviewing this one. This guy is the opposite of arrogant, in fact, he is one of the most self-effacing Seals I’ve read so far. Comes across relatable and authentic. Good stories. Makes me wonder if you even read the book or if you just have it out for Seals.

2. Interesting story - There is a lot to like about this story: a) It's a leadership tale that describes a common problem as leaders grow in an organization - how hard it is to transition from one level to another. Even in an elite SEAL unit that trains leaders and spends a lot of money building teams, people have a hard time making this transition. The description of the author's initial failure to make this transition and his recovery are worth reading.
b) It's a war tale that shows the importance of family, the brutality of war, the apathy of many Americans to our wars and our vets, and how hard work, support, and determination can help injured vets recover. c) Finally, it's a tale of personal triumph, of overcoming faults, and rebuilding one's life. Despite that, it wasn't worth the read because it wasn't that well written. Much of the story was rather banal and trite. And it was very hard to like Mr. Redman. He is clearly a hero and deserves our support and praise, but he comes across as an egotistical, opinionated individual, with whom I wouldn't like to spend very much time. I bought the book to support a vet. Unless you are a diehard SEAL fan, I can't think of any other reason to buy or read it.

3. Excellent book! Could not put it down. - It has all the stuff you would expect from a warrior. There is also a love story or two in the book. The love this man has for his country, team mates and his family is all over the the stories. Thanks Jay for serving and sacrificing for us all and thank you Erica for standing by your man no matter what. You are both incredible.
2015-05-30
4. Captivating - I heard Lt. Redman speak during a men's breakfast at my church. His story was one of honor, strength, and determination. This story provides a great overlay of action in the battlefield with a man struggling with the responsibility of leading the most motivated, over achieving men in the world. This book is set apart from others by Naval Seals with one word, humility. Jay peals back all the layers of his life for a look inside a man fighting himself. Thank you for sharing your life with us. God Bless you and your family, and thank you for your service.
2015-03-22
5. Leadership insights few will ever experience directly - Some components of leadership are universal. However, Lt. Redman and Mr. Burning write from a perspective most of us will never have. The leader that Lt. Redman strived to be literally held lives in his hands. I am better for having read The Trident and I thank these gentlemen for sharing it.
2014-09-07
6. The Trident - The Trident may be one of the best books I have ever read. It deals with Warrior life on all levels. Most importantly, it exemplifies the courage to transcend from a survivor, to a Legend. I am truly humbled by Jason Redman. God bless you and your family. And please realize that there are plenty of Americans that are so thankful for the sacrifice you and your Brothers have made, so we may sleep peacefully through the night.

1. The Last Season - A thought-provoking, compelling story that makes you ache for the resolution, but ultimately leaves you the choice to draw your own conclusions. More than most stories of the joys and risks of wilderness adventure, it provides a compelling vision of a life of a modern mountain man who lives in the backcountry, rather than a visitor or a conqueror. He is a naturalist, a hermit, a romantic, and a passionate advocate of wild places. It also gives a view of the psychology of a person who can and would devote decades to living alone in the wilderness. He is man tortured by his very love affair with the mountains. This passion reveals itself in dark side of passion - obsession, selfishness, and is ultimately passion that kills him. For the outdoor adventurer, it will make you think. It has made me think about how I hike and climb, why I take the risks I take, and the possible effects on those I leave behind.

1. Just an odd book - There was just "something" about the book I didn't like. I can't pinpoint it but maybe it's because the guy seems to take his wealth as a given. I didn't get a sense of any honesty from him. Then I was confused.....how Marc was trus brain injury and how much was "psychological". It left all that out there but didn't explain further!
2015-09-17
2. Disgusting! - Inspirational? Wish you could help??? This guy brags about his big house, expensive cars and watches, planes, the number of shoes his wife owns? Paying $, cash for a yacht? Going to Hawaii and "downsizing" to BMW's while he's so broke he has to pay for his son's rehab by credit card? Oh, the "poor" wealthy who have no savings or insufficient insurance!!!! Just because someone can earn a lot of money doesn't necessarily make them smart. I feel stupid for paying $. for this book.

1. A quick but good read - A different book than I usually read what with its colorful drawings that accompany the sparse text. But Ms. Redniss packs a lot of information in a quick read, enough to make me want to read more of the Curies and keep an eye on her future work. I had a couple gripes with the iBook I read. The 'highlight' function was not operational, a disappointment. But far more egregious were the several passages where 'white text' was positioned on a 'white' background', and 'black text' on a 'black background', effectively making that text unreadable. Because the highlight function was not operational there was just no way to read those passages. I presume the paper versions of 'Radioactive' did not contain this flaw, but I am curious if anyone else experienced this phenomenon with the digital copy of 'Radioactive...'

1. More of the same "doom on Apple" drivel - It's a pity that Ms. Kane resorted to such cheap PR tactics in an effort to sale more books. I used to enjoy her work in the Journal, but this book veers far from offering an objective lens of the current state of Apple. She posits that Apple no longer innovates; well, she must be obtuse or oblivious to the release of the new Mac Pro last year. What about the new iPad Air? It is significantly smaller, % lighter, more powerful, and has increased battery life all at the same time. This is more of the same "doom on Apple" drivel that people have been composing since the late s. With Jony Ive and his small team of designers pushing the envelope in materials, methods, and manufacturing, the best years for Apple lie ahead.
2014-11-30
2. Unorganized and Poorly Written - No real premise. First part of the book had some interesting insight into Apple and the personalities. The rest of the book became a complete hit piece filled with personal opinion with little fact. Pretty sad this individual was employed at WSJ. Maybe there is a reason she no longer works there; obviously needs an editor.
2014-07-08
3. Wow - It's amazing that this book went to print when considering the lack of any substantive evidence to support the many implausible claims. And the author's critical thinking skills? Good lord. When asked what makes Jony Ive "controversial", she responded with "Just as a person...but, you know, just his ego..." What drivel. Is this even a thought?

1. Loved it!! - First up, it was hard for me to sit down with a hardcover/paperback book. Having it on for phone which I have around me percent of my day helped me really get into reading. Second, Dr. Drew is a doctor I've looked up to for years. Really interesting to read about his day to day in and outs.

2. Excellent Book - Dr. Drew is much more than a made for tv doctor. He is exceptionally smart and very patient centered in all that he does to help people make healthier choices. Addiction is a mentally exhausting spider web that takes great tact and skill to navigate - Dr. Drew has mastered his craft yet remains 'real' and 'feeling' through it all. This book was fascinating and insightful. I learned a lot and now have a much larger appreciation for the world of rehab.

I underwent ECT and ketamine treatments starting last June . I too lost my memory and had to find myself during the period of ECT treatment. I am not there yet as Christine said she is still returning, not to her former self but to being a new person. I thank Christine for writing about her struggles after her stroke. It gives hope for those with similar mental experiences.
