1. Like Licorice - Jerry Garcia once said that the Grateful Dead are like licorice -- not everybody likes licorice, but the ones who do, REALLY like licorice! And one deadhead to another, some of their concert recordings just didn't have the same special sauce as others. This album is special -- every cherry-picked live song rocks. Every recording is beautiful, and all in honor of that amazing bard and frequent stage-sharer, Bobby Dylan. When Dylan and the Dead played together, it was incredible, but to me, the really superb work was in '-, when Dylan's influence and song-writing was seen in virtually every show, but the boys had absorbed his vibrations and made them their own. The majority of the tracks are from that special era, with a few thrown in from the early-mid ''s and a terrific ' It Takes a Train to Cry. When I first picked up the album, I was blown away to see that my own first show was represented here -- and I can clearly remember the taste of that ice cold beer during Tom Thumb's Blues at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC on //. For the ex-tourers, this album will take you back wonderfully to your shows of the period, and for the yet-to-be-indoctrinated deadheads out there -- the ubiquity of Dylan's structures will pull you in and connect you to the phenomenal musical interplay between the members of the Dead. When Dylan satirically wrote "they're selling postcards of the hanging", it wasn't supposed to be a good thing… but rest assured, The Dead's Postcards of the Hanging is a very, very, very good thing.

2. Bob Would Approve - This collection is a great example of the deep respect the boys have for Mr. Dylan. Jer and Bobby take Zimmy's songs, and make them their own. My favorites are Jerry's readings of "She Belongs to Me" and "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue"; along with Weir's renditions of "Ballad Of A Thin Man" and "When I Paint My Masterpiece." The "Train to Cry" jam with The Allman Brothers Band is a standout, as is the "Man Of Peace" studio rehearsal with Dylan. This is a must have for anyone who digs both the Dead and Dylan.

1. What a band! - It's been so long since a band knocked my socks of with its playing, singing, writing, and sheer originality. A swampy/funky hybrid of Stevie Wonder, Little Feat and perhaps Tower of Power, this band is absolutely SMOKIN'! And the live videos you can find on Youtube prove that it's not just "studio magic" that makes this band sound so good - they are truly the real deal. Check them out while they're still touring smaller clubs at affordable ticket prices, because if there's any justice in the world, this band will be HUGE one day.

2. The best album of ! - I buy and listen to tons of different genres of music and without a doubt this is my favorite album of the year and from beginning to end is amazing. Mixing soul, blues, and funk to complete perfection with their own Texas flare. Buy it and see them live. They are an amazing band.

3. Completely Groovy Record - Sorry I’m about a month late to this party! I’ve been a big fan of these guys for a few years now and am unfortunately yet to see them live (I live in Michigan) but this album will ease the pain for a little while! Listened to it top to bottom twice on a recent flight and all of a sudden it was time to land. Starts nicely out of the gate with “End of the World,” a song that has all the hook and catchiness with which “Dirty Gritty” grabbed my attention. “Silver Lining” is an excellent soulful tune that reminds me a little of another favorite artist of mine, Gavin DeGraw, but he certainly doesn’t have this killer horn section or arrangement variety. I’ve been waiting for a recording of “On Time” since the YouTube version came out … there simply isn’t enough to say about this anthem to patience and confidence in times of self-doubt. Beautifully sung, great horn parts, complementary additions from the keys and guitar, subtly groovy bass. “Where Did You Come From” smacks purely of Motown from the clean guitar intro to the vocal harmonies to the sexy baritone sax solo. Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye would dig it. To that end, “Fireproof” possesses a similar nostalgia and serves as a worthy conclusion to the project. Reminds me of the emotion that their song “Laid It Down” also evokes. The open ending gives hope for better things to come, and while that’s a tall order for Mingo Fishtrap they always seem to serve it up hot, fresh, and ON TIME.

4. Phenomenal Phunk and Sweet Soul! - Ladies and gentlemen, this band is the real deal. Soulful, funky and FUN music that is guaranteed to put you in a good mood. I only discovered them a couple of years ago and they've since become one of my favorites! 'On Time' delivers the goods and contains masterful songwriting blended with flawless vocals and musicianship. Go. Download. Now. (In fact, download all of their albums. There's not a bad song in any of them.) But if you really want to be blown away, SEE THEM LIVE! They're one of those undiscovered treasures that you will wish you knew of before they got BIG!

5. GOOD LAWD! - Mingo is like a Chef that just gets better and better w/every recipe! Mingo has cooked up a delicious CD, that leaves you full but wanting more! They can never come to your town enough, and you find yourself hoping today is the day you check their website, and find they have added your town to their tour!

6. i love these guys - with root that range from otis redding to little feat, this is a phenomenal band both live and on record. They are as compelling emotionally as they are musically. This is a rare mixture in today's musical world. Buy this album and all the others, and if you have the chance, see them live--it is amazing

7. THE BEST LIVE BAND IN AMERICA RIGHT NOW !! - MINGO FISHTRAP is a true Tour De Force of Roots, Soul and Funk. The songwriting is as good as it gets these days, and the musicianship is way above board as you would expect from a band like this from Austin, TX. As utterly fantastic as they are on their albums, that are even better live. Make sure you see them live the first chance you get !!

1. Nice Selections - Mid-range collector here. I've got a few days worth of live stuff but not anywhere near everything. That being said, the track selection on this one is good as well as the audio quality. A great sampler, even if you've got a lot of Dead stuff. I like the picks of some out of the ordinary venues/dates. The early stuff is top notch as well.

2. A great career spanner - I have about , hours of live dead, released and unreleased. There is no perfect compilation out there. I think the So Many Roads box set was a great attempt. This is an imperfect fit to be the companion to the long sold out $ box set of discs and all shows. A USB with all shows in FLAC is available (for now, almost sold out too) from the dead directly, or you can pay a fortune on Ebay. Otherwise, this box set is one song from each of the shows, with effort clearly put into this to find songs that work together while attempting a career retrospective. Any cd selection from an disc box set is going to have its limitations. If you are looking for a nice listen without committing huge time and money, this is for you.

3. Dark Star is dope - the rest...meh. - The ' Dark Star is just killer, but then, I am partial to the early ones - many heads differ and like the reeeaaally long later ones. To me, it's pretty much worth the price of admission given the performance level and mix quality. Within the rest of the list, I didn't find any other particularly great versions of anything.

1. Another Home Run - Another home run from AOD. This recording just captures everything I love about the band. From mellow undertones to rip roaring jams and keys. As always Reid with the killer vocals keeping it all together. And then as the cherry on top Reid with a Neil Young cover that will blow you away!

2. Great Americana Folk Rock - Assembly of Dust is a great blend of Americana Garcia-Hunter-esque lyrics with excellent vocals and musicianship. "Tales" is a great sampling of what they sound like live. While I have not seen them that many times, I plan to do so whenever they are in my area. I am very happy with this new live release.

1. Great Performance - I had the good fortune to see Jim’s trio play live several times this year and this recording is almost as good as being at one of his shows. The set list is varied and captures an excellent cross section of Jim’s best songs. The music is dynamic, moving and inspirational. If you’re already a fan this album is a “must have”. If you’re not familiar with Jim’s work this is a great place to start!
Cheers,
Mark A.

2. A truly unique artist - Jim Campilongo is a true artist. One of the few in today's guitar/instrumental landscape, imo. Sure, there are alot of great guitarists out there... but very few who have a style totally unique, who have created something different, AND who have the improvisational spirit. Jim is one of them. His music is usually classified as "jazz", but it defies classification... jazz, blues, hillbilly jazz, avant garde.... lots of sounds in there, all played with the "improvisational heart" of a jazzer. Jim takes you on a journey... a familiar one if you know the song, but the journey is never quite the same twice. I highly recommend his entire catalog. And the same could be said of his special guest on this record- Nels Cline.
