1. Hard Rock at the Razor's Edge, Circa - This is the second (FOR YOUR LOVE being the first) of two compilation albums assembled by Yardbirds manager Giorgio Gomelsky in to help break the band in the US. Amazingly, some of these tracks weren't even released in their native Britain during the band's lifespan. By the same token, FIVE LIVE YARDBIRDS was never given an official US release during the same period, which is why four tracks from that album fill side two. In any event, this may be the one LP that sums up their appeal, both as a forward thinking singles act and an explosive live band. Side one collects most of their cutting edge hits with Jeff Beck on lead guitar, including "Heart Full of Soul," "I'm a Man," "Evil Hearted You" (UK only) and "Still I'm Sad" (UK hit, B-side to "Man"). Thankfully it also includes their theme song"Train Kept a Rolling" and "Mr. You're a Better Man Than I," which like the studio take of "I'm a Man" were never released in Britain during their brief heyday. All of these tracks are audio dynamite. "Train" was recorded with Sam Phillips (of Sun Records fame) which is why it still explodes from the speakers some years later with Keith Relf yelping his one lunged heart out while huffing and puffing righteously on his harmonica opposite Beck's aggressive heavy riffing. "I'm A Man" has even more sizzling guitar-harmonica interplay before Beck demonstrates his masterclass in chicken scratch soloing. "Mr. You're a Better Man Than I" offers social commentary from Manfred Mann drummer Mike Hugg (and his brother Brian) delivered with sober singing from Relf and yet another ascending fuzz guitar solo from Beck. "Heart Full Of Soul" and "Evil Hearted You" are minor key mood swings courtesy of writer Graham Gouldman (who also penned "For Your Love") delivered with soul by Relf while Beck delivers the kind of sinister Eastern scaled riffing that established him as the most influential pre-Hendrix rock guitarist. "Still I'm Sad" meanwhile broke the band in as songwriters as bassist Paul Samwell Smith and drummer Jim McCarty penned an impressively poetic dirge rocker complete with Gregorian chants. How's that for cutting edge? Side two collects tracks from FIVE LIVE YARDBIRDS, showing off the band's concert chops. Sure it's misleading---Eric Clapton is the uncredited guitarist in the cuts culled from the Marquee show the year before---and redundant---it also includes another version of "I'm A Man"---but since FIVE LIVE hadn't been released in the States I'm guessing Gomelsky wanted to show the live side of the band. "Smokestack Lightning" is a version of the Howlin' Wolf standard that even the Wolf admitted was definitive. "Respectable" turns the Isley Brothers original inside out---love the Humpty Dumpty allusion!---losing the roll in favor of righteous rock. "I'm a Man" plows through the Bo Diddley classic with an instrumental rush led by Relf and Clapton. And then there's "Here Tis", the ultimate in berserk R&B with Samwell Smith and Clapton engaging a a bass-guitar duel for the ages. So that's HAVING A RAVE UP. At $. it's a steal if you're new to the band. But chances are after hearing it you'll probably want to hear more. And More. AND MORE!

1. Outstand record of a great show - I was fortunate enough to have been at this WInterland concert in the mid s. I think they opened for The Kinks, but that's a hazy memory for multiple reasons. This is a very decent recording of that show and made me an SB&Q fan ever since. Great songs, catchy melodies and listening to Tim Renwick play guitar is a revelation.
