1. Buy this album now! - This has been a hugely anticipated release for diehard Ian fans and he definitely delivers the goods on this EP. Ian has always straddled the fence between Texas Blues & Motown/Memphis soulful leanings, and while soul covers have trickled out in live shows over the years, it is gratifying to get some dedicated studio versions of this genre. The barnburner is Al Green's "I'm A Ram" - done previously by the likes of jam rock stalwarts Gov't Mule & Canadian rockers Big Sugar, but Ian puts his unique stamp on this classic song. Curtis Mayfield's "Fool for You" is a great midtemp number. Solomon Burke's "Cry to Me" is an upbeat tune with elements of jump blues and rockabilly. There is a reworking of his own fan favorite "Satisfied" that puts a new wrinkle on the beloved soul-meets-blues classic. The hidden gem for me was Darondo's "Didn't I" - haunting & mesmerizing. He really went deep into the well for this one - let me just say the song selection for this record is amazing - I tend to care less when artists do obvious covers of big hits. Not that I wouldn't have minded hearing classic Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Stevie Wonder, etc. but I dig it when musicians go for the deep cuts, and this EP delivers in that regard. I have seen Ian do live shows featuring many of these songs now and it is a great time to go see him play if you dig blues & soul music and watching him tear up a Strat! My only complaint as a fan is that is only a song EP - I am clamoring for more of this kind of stuff. "Americana" seems to be a hot / popular genre right now, but to me this is a real American born music treat. I have it on good authority that there will be more songs like this released in the future (Aaron Neville's funky jam "Hercules" for one) so do your part to support the effort by buying the album and hitting a live show - you will not be dissapointed!

2. Ian is coming into his prime - Just saw him in concert here in Colorado and he was simply outstanding. A true artist. "The Noble Art" is a boxing reference, hence the cover art, and this album is his attempt to battle with some real guitar greats. Complex and beautiful, soulful and authentic. Another great album in what I hope is many more to come.
