1. Defines the summers of my childhood and sounds better than the vinyl - My father bought this exact album probably when he got out of the Navy in . At some point in the 's, he gave me all his records and this one stuck out as a summertime favorite. "Stand", "Fun", "Hot Fun in the Summertime", "Thank you Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again". In the mid-'s, I was into transcribing all my favorite records to digital via the flattest, most faithful transfer methods I could afford. Because I used to always listen to the older records on a BSR changer, I made the transfer of this album via that turntable with a ceramic needle. Not sure about the curve on the pre-amp, but I think it was standard RIAA. Anyway, the turntable apparently ran a bit fast and the tone was off. I've heard of certain releases containing encoded quad and other technologies as well, so not sure if this was the issue. Upon downloading on iTunes, I'm really enjoying hearing these tracks as they were meant to be.

2. Greatest Funk Album of All Times - Sly and the Family Stone had the as James Brown called it. He stole the show at Woodstock. He was the show when ever they got it together to play. Are there any better songs than I want to take you higher or Dance to the Music??? We waited for them to play one time at the Spectrum in Philly for minutes. It was worth every minute. This album captures that magic. -- enjoy!!

3. Dance to the Music! - Man, music don't get much better than this! People just don't make music with their souls anymore. Buy the entire album, because every tracks great but the Amazing songs are: Dance to the Music, Everbody is a Star,Stand!,I Want to Take it you Higher, Hot Fun in the Summertime, and Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin)! If you don't already have this masterpiece, buy it now! I highly recomend!!!

4. A true pioneer whom so many great artists of the last years are indebted too - He's fragile, funky, loose, funny, and torn. He's at war with himself. He aims for good but there's a streak of melancholy that always rears it's head in his music. I love him the way I love Edward Scissorhands, Tony Montana, and Shaft.

1. I miss the s - There's a reason so many people are nostaligic for that wonderful decade. This sound… the fun… it's just not around in the st century. They're entertainers and they look like they're having a good time. That kind of energy is sorely lacking with today's music. So, I added "Party Train", "You Dropped a Bomb on Me", and "Early in the Moring" to my collection of music. The Gap Band isn't the only musical group that made the s fun, but it wouldn't have been as fun without them. When I see The Gap Band, their smiling is contagious. …and when I play these songs, other people smile too.

1. Best Band Ever - Flat out no questions this is one of the best bands ever. Their talent and influence are on par with the Beach Boys and Beatles by way of comparison. Miles Davis, George Clinton, Prince, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, on and on were influenced by Sly. Just listen to the songs. They are not dated and considering when they were done they are well before their time. Some of these songs are more or less american standards at this point (Family Affair, Thank You, etc..) JUST GET THIS!

1. jesus Garber - Sly and The Family Stone’s Stand album is a huge classic and must have for your music collection. Every song gives you a real since of what was happening in America at that time. Sly and the Family Stone wanted to bring all people together through their music. If you love great songs and want to get a feel for history, you will love this whole album. Sincerely,, Jesus Garber

2. Kind of sad, really. - I heard a little while back that they found Sly living in a van off of Van Nuys. Makes you wonder about our way of life. His minutes or so of higher in the Woodstock movie was arguebly the most powerful segment of the movie, and then to have fallen so far makes me sad. I wish things like that did not happen.

3. A Call to Action! - I'm an R&B musician. I was years old, on break and standing over the jukebox in a saloon in a sleepy southern town where i was playing.. when I heard Sly's "Sing a Simple Song" for the first time. It was one of those moments when I learned for myself how something can arrive that stands apart from the universe as "I" knew it. Standing there gripping the juke-box a long moment after the song finished, stunned, all I could think was ".. who are these people?!" The sound was a call.. to action, somehow. I didn't know what, but I knew something important had started somewhere "out there" in the world. And I wanted in. I've had a thrilling life you might not believe, that I kind of trace back to that moment. Wow... yehh.

1. Revolutionary - Even if you never get past the first two tracks, you'll understand why this is a five star recording. Rusty Allen's Bass playing (often believed to be Larry Graham) on If You Want me To Stay and Andy Newmark's drumming throughout are unlike anything that came before or after. Sly's vocal and keyboard playing on If You Want Me to Stay is a career highlight...and that's saying something. As an interesting aside, this is thought to be the first recording ever to use a drum machine, and though it's hard to feel thankful for where that technological "advance" eventually led, this record is a soul/funk tour de force.

2. DESERT ISLAND DISC - One of mine, for sure. Sly at his peak, this disc does not get the credit it derserves in the rock pantheon. Rusty Allen taking over Larry Graham's place on bass superbly...Listen to 'In Time' and Andy Newmark's "backward drums" (as he himself has called that track). Just an unbelieveable mix of tunes, right down to the heroin drawl-like "Que Sera Sera' . Question: I bought a CD of this disc way back when - different mixes (no Sly talking, less Little Sister, horns dropped out of the mix at times). Anybody know about that version? Is the Itunes version the original?

3. Sly is a "Wizard" - I grew up listening and playing Sly & The Family Stone songs in the early 's. I guess that makes me sort of old school but not so un-hip. All I have to say is that anyone giving this album lower than stars does not understand how great this album is. One reviewer said it best, listen to the song "In Time". Killing!! You might have to be a true musician to really appreciate Sly's music.

4. splendidly funkalicious - i bought this album wanting to explore the work of sly stone and gang and at first found myself a little disappointed. i was deterred from "riot" by the warnings about poor sound quality. the more i listen to this album, the more it grows on me. more like, creeps up and puts an arm around my shoulder... it's especially seductive with headphones. i like the "single" from this album (although i'm not sure i've ever heard of it getting radio play) and the version of "que sera, sera" seems to me to be the centerpiece. it's kind of like a lull as people are coming and going from the best party you've ever attended. it's the point where sly seems finally too stoned for hardcore groovin', but still groovy enough to make a statement, it's just a little quieter. other standout tracks are "babies makin' babies," "in time" and "i don't know (satisfaction)."

1. Savage and Legendary - Vulf does it again with their smooth beats and funky bass. Cannot be more happy with the album. I have Spotify premium and still bought the album on iTunes because its not on Spotify yet. Growing up in Michigan and in the same area as Joe Dart (the bass god), I cannot not be more proud of Thrill of the Arts.

1. The polar opposite of Beatles 'Sgt.Pepper' - Sly & Family Stone's greatest achievement. Seems like Sly found out the promises of the 's love 'n' hope were false. And it took till to come out with this gem (or hangover) from that era. This is DEEP funk. Can't go any lower than this. This album never gets old. The gritty and muddy sound is created because Sly kept erasing and overdubbing parts. And it affected parts that weren't overdubbed. And surprisingly, that a good thing. Five stars aren't enough for this album. Pick this up at once. This album is not to be missed. 'nuff said........

2. There - I'm an R&B musician. I was years old, standing in a saloon in a sleepy southern town where i was playing when Sly's "Dance to the Music" single hit the airwaves. It was one of those moments when I learned for myself how something can arrive that stands apart from the universe as "I" knew it. Standing there gripping the juke-box a long moment after the song finished, stunned, all I could think was ".. who are these people?!" The sound was a call.. to action, somehow. 3. AN EPIC OF ROCK AND ROLL - The true greatness of this record is measured by how a) addictive it is and b) how hard it is to get into. Listen to his use of primitive drum machines. Listen to the SPACES between the instruments. Listen to the arrangements. While my personal favorite Sly album is FRESH, this one belongs on another planet. I've seen rabid R n B fans listen to it and walk away scratching their heads. One of the most difficult albums in the world to love; one of the best ever recorded. Saw him live times (twice during the FRESH tour, once recently). I touched him!!!
2008-10-09
4. One of the best of the th Century - Sly Stone is a genius - there's a reason why Miles Davis was completely floored by Sly and his new music. The music here is among the most innovative and essential of all th century American music, of any genre. It retains all of the vitality and electricity of the Family Stone's s music, but adds a very dark undercurrent of decadence and decay. On this record, a perfect balance between these two extremes is maintained, before Sly started to fall off of the brink. You'll have to listen to the whole record more than once to "get it", but once you do, you'll fall under the music's spell too.
2007-08-01
5. Great, Spooky, Proto-Funk - What's interesting about this album is that in universally renowned as great (which it is) but it has been interpreted and re-interpreted as a 'socio-political' album. Yes, maybe the music Sly and the Family Stone made here was symptomatic of the post-s burnout that led to the darkness of the early s, but the album doesn't really have any explicit social/politcal commentary to its lyrics/music. Read this excerpt from Sly Stone's recent Vanity Fair interview: ----- [Reporter David Kamp's voice] I asked if his writing (of TARGO) was impacted by any of the period's (early s) ugliness—the Kent State killings, the Attica prison riots, the M.L.K. and R.F.K. assassinations. "Um, I paid attention to it," he (Sly) says, "but I didn't count on it. I wasn't going on any other program or agenda or philosophy. It was just what I observed, where I was at." Still, Stone doesn't totally dismiss those who ascribe loftier meanings to the album. When [asked] if he regards There's a Riot Goin' On in any way as a political statement, he says, "Well, yeah, probably. But I didn't mean it to be." ----- So don't perceive this album as the bizarro version of What's Goin' On and just understand that its a great, influential album that was made by a f'ed-up genius.

6. intervention heat wave music - Blues and funk together, for real. This record has no precedent, and plenty of good and not so good successors. and I always wondered where the Beastie Boys got their meandering Check Your Head grooves. From this mess of a masterpiece. Love how he keeps maxing out the meter on the vocals. And is there anything more amazing than his yodeling in 'Spaced Cowboy'?
2007-07-06
7. funk? - Yes it is! every song on this masterpiece is required for the album to work the way that it does. the barren grooves, the majestic keyboards, the poweful vocals by mostly sly, they all make this album one of the best. my personal favorite song is Africa Talks To You "The Asphalt Jungle". its guitars keep the groove going, with the bass holding it down perfectly. it has a lot of great melodies, and a lot of groove. this album is perfect, buy it.

1. One of the best albums. EVER - Forget Live At The Apollo, this is without a doubt the funkiest live record of all time. If you can't dance to this then you are either dead, disabled, or more musically ignorant than a deaf caterpillar. I mean, when Maceo starts going up in half steps during his solo in Shake Everything, you feel like standing up on your feet and cheering like all of the audience members in the German crowd (this was recorded in GERMANY people. If they are that reactive to him over there, imagine what a show in New Orleans would be like). And who would have thought the world's worst little pop tune could turn into such a fabulous soul song (see addictive love). I agree with your friend the drummer, this is the funkiest cd you wil ever own. Period.
2008-12-17
2. Killin' - What a wonderful album. A drummer friend of mine introduced me to Maceo, saying "this is the funkiest CD you will ever own." Well, I don't think he was far off. What a tight band. Fred Wesley is pretty nasty too. Maceo is a great improviser to learn from too - he knows when to keep it simple, but always keeps it in the pocket. You can tell he loves what he does.
2008-08-01
3. One of the greatest live recordings PERIOD (.) - I would have everyone on planet Earth take lessons from Maceo. When will they release Apple TV [Halogram v .] so he can jam on your kitchen counter while you're making bacon?? If you don't get this album right now (unless you've already got it, then you're cool) I will right a letter to your congress person saying your jurisdiction is in need of music help. Bad. In summation: it is an awesome funky recording with great solos from Mr. Parker.

1. "The Album Title Tells It All" - "Back In The Day: The Best Of Bootsy" is absolutely the finest (and funkiest) Bootsy Collins compilation available. Every track on this CD is essential in the musical history of this talented artist, from 'Stretchin' Out' to 'Body Slam' this collection is the 'BOMB'. And by the way, not only Eazy E, but N.W.A., Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube (to name a few) all sampled Bootsy Collins (as well as George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic) were do you think the label 'G-Funk' came from?
2010-05-11
2. Simply funktastic - Bootie Collins' bona fides are impeccable. If you want to know about "funk" as a musical genre, you cannot go wrong by investigating the Bootsyman. As an iconic figure of innovative gitdownshakeyourbooty thumpntwang excitement, Bootsy is a leader without equal. He has been there (everywhere) with the best of the best and is simply and energetically unstoppable. If you can sit there and listen to this stuff without at least acknowledging the urge to jump up and move your pitiful body around you are, indeed, dead.
2009-01-28
3. Bootsy's Jams - This album is a good "first look" for those who may not know his music or those who want to hear more than the usual songs by him. Many of past and present day rapper's and DJ's have sampled or used his music, (especially the bass lines), for their own music. And, yes, NWA did use his music, as did Snoop Dogg and many, many others. The West Coast used a lot of his music and, IMHO, the "West Coast Sound" is heavily influenced by "Mr. Boots" and the Funk genre.
2008-05-16
4. funk at its best - Cody- I will not attack you, but inform you that easy-e sampled bootsy's music. Please do your homework. Think about it, how could a song that originally aired in the 's be stolen by NWA, who formed in the 's. Hmmmm? Makes ya think. The album is great anyhoo despite what others think

1. A mature offering from Vulfpeck - Took a bit to grow on me, but now one of my favorite albums of the Vulfpeck. The songwriting is more polished and complete, and the tracks are varied, but have a coherent vibe to them. Super funky. Only suggestion is to have Theo and Antwuan sing on more tracks - love Theo and he only has one chorus in the whole album?!?! Bring in Steve Gadd on the next version of Tee Time!!! Keep it rolling....

2. One Of The Best Bands Out Now - Vulfpeck has evolved from a funk rhythm section to a multi-generational collective of likeminded musicians bringing heart back to soul music. Creative yet musical, this record is the perfect companion to any part of your day. Sonically it is their best yet as well. Give this record a try.. its one of 's finest.

2. Who'd a-Funk it? - This highly talented quartet-plus-one from Great Britain has hit the States with a much-needed shot in the funky bone with its latest album %. With grooves channeling the likes of Grant Green, the Meters, the Greyboy Allstars, James Brown and his band, the lads from Leeds create an original take on an old American classic form with a little spice from across the pond. PS, their live shows are non-stop energy.

1. I love it but... - I really really enjoy this band and this album, but I feel like this album is a bit of a step backward. With the exception of "Wait For the Moment" and "The Speedwalker" I thought this album was not as well developed as some of their older albums. I still love to listen Vulfpeck, they never fail to put me in a great mood. I really have very little to complain about regarding this album.

2. Incredible and Unique - Vulfpeck brings a truly unique album experience with My First Car. With unique ideas for every song, they just draw you in. And goodness can we talk for a minute about how easy listening this album is. It just soothes the ears into a place of such groove. It Gets Funkier III, Wait for the Moment and The Birdwatcher were my three favorite songs from this album but they're all so great. And Joe Dart is on bass and that's really all that you need to know!!!

1. Funky, groovy, fantastic! - I’ve been listening to this album since it’s release tonight and it’s a great record! The Theo tunes really shine, the instrumentals are funky and dance-worthy (Disco Ulysses is a stand out disco banger that has a super infectious bass line provided by the one and only Joe Dart) and the album has a good flow to it. I feel like this is Vulfpeck’s strongest set of songs to date and it’s well worth giving a listen. You will absolutely not regret it

1. One of the best albums of all time - I'd put this near the top of my list of best albumbs of all time. Chaka simply has one of the best voices ever, and the band is funky and energetic. EDIT: this iTunes version is missing the ending track recorded in the studio called "Don't Go to Strangers"--it's a fabulous jazz track that is mysteriously missing here.
2021-01-05
2. A really missed opportunity to end Rufus w a BANG - Rufus putting out a live album is great on paper, but the results were quite bad. First and foremost, Chaka is hit and miss in concert in regards to her vocals being up to par. When these live tracks were thrown together she was clearly not THERE. Also the band Rufus also is just so-so. This is not an intimate affair. Pack'd My Bags is too good of a song that she could have hada real moment with but...
The studio cuts are decent. My favorite is Try A Little Under-standing and brilliant
Don't Go To Strangers. I've never got the hype of Ain't Nobody and I still hate to hear
her do it in concerts now.

1. No Complacency Here!! - This is THE ONE! Strolling through the set I found it hard just to get past the opening on Trapezoid!! The set list and feel, includes flashes and glimmers of the past sprinkled throughout. Everything after the iconic; Everybody Wants to Rule the World gives me life!! Best studio album that absolutely FEELS LIVE! Funk, spacey, GoGo, the future looks good!

2. Instant classic - If you’re a long-time Lettuce fan, this album delivers in all the ways you’d expect: cool grooves, spacey guitar lines, and of course super-tight horn arrangements. But there’s three tracks in particular that I feel deserve a special mention... Royal Highness: this intense slap-you-in-the-face groove just keeps getting better as it goes along. It’s so funky it gives me palpitations. Don’t listen while driving, because you’ll drive straight off the road! Everybody Wants To Rule The World: this is NOT the type of song you’d ever expect Lettuce to cover, but the arrangement is so good that it makes it sound like an original. I didn’t even recognize it until about halfway in, and then it hit me: “ohhh, THAT song!” Very reminiscent of Soulive’s cover of OutKast’s Prototype (maybe both arranged by Ryan Zoidis?). Ready To Live: this one just blows me away at how much it sounds like a ’s Lenny Williams/Chester Thompson-era Tower of Power hit. From the pumping Rocco-style bass lines to the vocals to the rhythm guitar to the horn arrangements to the percussion, they absolutely NAILED that sound. It’s unbelievable! The rest of the album is great too, but I’d buy it just for those three tracks alone!

2. in my opinion - a whole new thing was sly's clever entry in the world. dance to the music had a chip on its shoulder that it had something to prove to the world. stand! is the album that made them mega stars so that was jackpot there's a riot goin on is the most beautiful painful car accident you'll ever witness in black music: awesome to watch, horrible to live in. fresh in a way is sad in the eyes of sly fans for they pretty much say this is the last perfect sly album, kinda like the place that you hold in your heart for stevie's "hotter than july" or prince's "lovesexy". and of course although "small talk" had awesome moments, many say that is when the cracks started to show. life if his perfect gem. his most clever wordplay, his most experimental, his most rocking pop dittys are ALL here!!!!

1. Most critics are wrong about this album - Great album. Sly still had the gift of song and melody. "Mother Beautiful" is absolutely beautiful and is of the quality that it could've been included on The White Album. Time for Livin' is inspiring and catchy. "Loose Booty" slams through with a huge presence - wall of sound, great funky rhythms, and just a whole lot of fun. It hurts to know that when I buy this album the money isn't going in Sly's pocket, but regardless, it's a great album and worth buying.

2. Severely Underrated & Severely Fun-kay - Don't believe the received opinion about later Sly. This is terrific album. Sly's lyrics were always personal but this one goes a little deeper in some songs. Holdin' On, Loose Booty, Can't Strain My Brain and Time For Livin' are deeply funky, with a groove that will stick in your head. This is Love is a candy-sweet doo wop homage that leaves you wanting more. Mother Beautiful and Small Talk will delight fans of songs like Stevie's Isn't She Lovely. The extras are great, too. By the way - no string section (as mentioned above), only a single and very inventive violinist who provides a fresh new texture to Sly's sound. Get it now!

1. Thank you Bruce! - I actually saw Bruce perform when he was touring this record. He’d just gotten divorced and I sat next to his ex-wife, which was weird. Great band and Bruce was incredible, man oh man do I miss the days when men were men. Anyway there was this one part I’ll always remember. Bruce had just finished that tunnel song and he just stopped for a whole minute, no singing, no talking, nothing. Then he just started meowing like a cat for a good five minutes. I was thinking, what is this? That dude from The Sopranos came over to see if he was ok. He waved him off then started barking like a dog. It was so weird but the guy is just that good that everyone in the arena just got into it, started participating. Dude didn’t sing another song the whole night, just different animal sounds, and I’ve never been happier. Thank you Bruce! He’s no boss at all, more like an emperor.

1. A Rediscovery - I was hesitant about purchasing this, since I already have his major albums and a couple of his lackluster later ones. Sound-bytes are by nature deceptive, but I took the plunge anyway. So what happened? This was a rediscovery of Sly. I realized I had no idea that his really early material would be so exciting -- sometimes Zappa-like, sometime James Brown-ish, and many more influences (big time zany horns, harmonies, and organ), but always top notch songs. The ultimate craftsman, a man born to do this only. I'm not sure what the concept is behind this anthology, but I found many gems that left me floored. Sure, not all will please you, but you get a powerful sense of his musicality and his changing visions. There's deep commitment and often high inspiration in each song. Highly recommended.

1. Humor abound! - This album is definitely NOT your typical metal-meets-funk-in-an-alleyway album, but it's definitely something that kicks most genres in the butt. Why? First of all: Bootsy Collins is on bass and Buckethead is on guitar. Just those two forces combined creates some havoc on the ears, but in a good way. Two: It's got that sense of humor you might need to be a little twisted to appreciate. Three: It's not easy listening because it's an an obvious one-timer album with this band makeup. Either way, it's enjoyable if you've come right off of Buckethead or Bootsy's alley of music. It's goofy, heavy, and down right ballsy with a hint of somthing better than the rest. So buy it and enjoy it, cause this is a unique album you won't find by ANY other artist, period.

1. L.T.D.'s BEST! - This is one of those rare albums/cd's you can listen to from beginning to end. It's also one of my top R&B/Soul albums of All Time... The Sound and Songs really encompass the sound of the late 's & early 's. Jeffrey Osborne's unique, blistering, soaring and commanding vocals on "Every" song, also conveys heart drenching wanting with a touch of melancholy, then raises you to a spirited exuberant optimism. Yeah, All In His Vocals! Ya think I'm a Fan(?)....lol IMO the band is at it's best on this project. If "Joy to the World" and "Won't you stay with Me" from previous releases were on this album, it would, IMO, be up there with "Songs in the Key of Life" - Stevie! This album/cd is a "Must" for an L.T.D and Jeffrey Osborne fan. Go get it

1. MusicLover - I have been a fan of Kanan Keeney for ages. Hannah and the Affirmations did an awesome job performing his lyrics and music on Late nights and Heartbreak. Now Jay-Z has taken Late Nights and Heartbreak to a whole new level! I love the original verson of Late Nights and Heartbreak on this album. Buy it, you'll be glad you did!

2. It's Growing On Me - Let me start by saying that listening to the demo clips of the songs did not hit me right the first time. I was also a bit miffed at the shift from 's soul to 's funk, even though I'm a fan of both. However I downloaded anyways because I loved the band so much and I must say that after listening a few times, Hannah Williams and the Affirmations have done a great job at capturing soulful side of 's funk just as they did with previous decades sound. It is now one of my go-to albums. So I say if you're on the fence, give it a shot!
