1. Where has she been all these years?! - Cannot believe I am only just now discovering Aoife and Crooked Still. She as now at the top of my all-time favorite artist list, along with Mindy Smith, Emmylou, Alison Krauss and Sarah Jarosz. Inspired by her fresh take on a traditional genre. Eager to hear more from this amazing artist.

2. Remarkable. - It's wonderful to hear truly new ideas in music. One hears echoes of Van Morrison, Donovan, Jeff Buckley, and Gordon Lightfoot (along with Johnny Cash) alongside some more traditional instrumentation and influences in the tunes, and the lyrics evoke Bob Dylan, Tom Brosseau, Buckley (again) and Elliott Smith. Aoife's ethereal voice winding throughout all of this binds the disparate elements together into something truly different. Highlights are Lay My Burden Down (listen for the Cash evocation here), Red & White & Blue & Gold (which paints a beautifully simple picture, and could have been written by Van Morrison), Fire Engine (a fun, country-inspired romp) and Oh, Mama, which recalls Buckley. ./ for a truly original and inspired creation.

3. A beautiful album - I was unfamiliar with Aoife O'Donovan's work and was introduced to this album by a friend. My tastes run to classical music and I rarely listen to anything else. This album is sublime and sophisticated. I recognize new language, which merges subtle lyrics with beautiful music. I am very glad to own this recording and cannot wait for O'Donovan's next effort.

4. Ah, there it is! - There it is! I am not much for nostalgia but there was a pocket of time in the mid-s that introduced some wonderful singer/songwriters. Heidi Berry, Nan Vernon, Mae Moore, Eddi Reader, Beth Orton and the desperately-missed Kirsty MacColl might have benefitted from the popularity of Sarah MacLachlan, but they were all solid, fully-formed talents blessed with enchanting voices and brilliant songwriting. They enjoyed respect from their peers and critical praise but wide fame eluded most of them. Miss O'Donovan evokes that great group, especially the wonderful Heidi Berry. Bless her (and Laura Marling) for adding to a canon of truly timeless music.

1. Like a fine wine -- it's better with age - Listening to this album, it's unbelievable that Judy Collins is years old. She sounds like someone in their 's. Not only does she sound fantastic, the material is great and her duet partners diverse and spot on. Strangers Again, From Grace, Miracle River and When I Go are particular stand-outs, though really the whole album is wonderful. Only does the duet with Jackson Browne ("Feels Like Home") seem a bit uninspired. Judy Collins is a model for us all on how to age gracefully and still live with vigor and purpose. She's been my favorite singer since the 's and she's certainly had an uneven career. It's inspiring and wonderful to see her release what could arguably be the best overall album of her entire career at this point in her life.

2. It's Beautiful - Buy this album. Music has an etherial, almost magical way of making people better. The lyrics to these songs inspired a lot to think and ponder on. Add to that Judy Collins calming glean plus the men she got to sing along the albums a refreshing blend of sounds. I'm biased in always wanting a full orchestra back up to everything. I can only imagine the affect it would have on this folk album, which is a five star work with the home spun sort of back up it has. I'm very happy with this buy, feeling I aready got my $. worth after just playing the album twice. It usually takes me three plays to fall in love with an album, "Strangers Again" had me after the second.

1. Insane Pipes - I’ve always love Judy’s voice, but to hear her beautiful, powerful, full throated voice in her later years just blows me away. Where a lot of singers lose some of their range and breath control Judy just keeps throwing it down. She no doubt has been disciplined about maintaining her craft. What a treasure she is!
Great song selection on this album and wonderful duets. Thank you, Judy, for blessing us with your music for so long.

2. Unbelievably Beautiful Beginning to End - Each duet is a jewel… I didn’t know how much I missed this pure music. Judy’s voice is incredibly unchanged (better?) The song choices, the partners on each duet… I am entranced. I can only imagine how amazing it would be to see these duets in a televised concert… PLEASE?!?

3. Liner notes now available from Judy. - I really am annoyed that the composer of songs doesn’t get downloaded (except some of the time) with the info that comes down from wherever it comes from. Since it’s there sometimes, it’s not that it can’t be done. Also, I’ve done searches on some songwriters and found songs where it does;t download, but it must be in that info somewhere. More extensive liner notes may be a reason to buy the hardcopy CD. Happily, in this case, you can see the info now for Judy’s releases on her new website! So, I guess I’ll go ahead and buy this via iTunes, and hand enter the info I want from Judy’s site. I sure wish that ITunes/Apple would provide a better path for this.

1. Learning to Fly - Sitting in a New York theater, Rhiannon Giddens was angered by a movie scene of a slave being raped. As the victim emerged into a group of onlookers, the camera focused not on her but on her husband, impelled by the assault to join a slave rebellion. “I found myself furious...,” Giddens writes in the introduction to Songs of Our Native Daughters, “furious at the moment in a long history of moments of the pain and suffering of black women being used to justify a man’s actions; at her own emotion … being literally written out of the scene.” Giddens conceived the idea of using music to illuminate the experience of women in slavery and the post-emancipation struggle in the Americas, ultimately partnering with Amythyst Kiah, Leyla McCalla and Allison Russell to form Our Native Daughters—four mightily talented artists. Their album’s extraordinary tracks, all but two written by quartet members, highlight the horrors of racism and sexism, and also the resilience and capacity for joy indispensable to overcoming humanity’s crimes. A second album focus is revisiting the banjo’s centrality in black minstrel music, predating the style’s mid-nineteenth century adoption by white performers. The collection’s most wrenching track, Mama’s Cryin’ Long, is a call-and-response description of a sexual assault and lynching, told from a child’s viewpoint. There’s exceptional patience in I Knew I Could Fly, a poetic dance of hope and oppression, and empowerment advice in Better Git Yer Learnin’ . Some songs explore personal history: McCalla, daughter of Haitian immigrants, performs Lavi Difisil (Hard Life) in Creole and English, and Russell honors a slave ancestor transported from Ghana to the Caribbean in Quasheba, Quasheba. Another standout: Polly Ann’s Hammer, the John Henry legend refocused on the steel driver’s wife. Art achieves monumental proportion not by building large but by penetrating deep, occupying little physical space but—like Songs of Our Native Daughters—touching the soul.—worldlisteningpost.com

2. So good for so many reasons - This album is so good for so many reasons. The album reaches back into time and voices stories that our culture would rather forget—stories of black women’s pain. But this album also captures the story of black women surviving, rising up, supporting each other, raising strong children, and thriving. These stories our culture would also like to erase. It is a complex album and not an easy one to listen to sometimes, but one that I think will be listed as historically important. It is an amazingly beautiful piece of art. As my training is rooted in history and not music, I don’t know exactly how to describe this beauty, but it shines through in every track. I’m so thankful for this album and cannot recommend it highly enough.

1. Love this music - I'm % in love with Tom's music, it's so beautiful and reflective, and amazing for any mood I'm in. It's slightly odd, which makes it even more enjoyable, and finds it's way into your heart with how it's interpreted by you. This is my favorite album, not just by him, but in general. / recommend.

1. Awesome, add more PLEASE! - I just find this absolutely amazing. This guy is a guitar god, I've seen him on YouTube and he does a few more songs like "Sweet Child O' Mine". Please add them and I will get them. I love guitar music in here just made all my favorite songs even better. Please add more songs, and I will surely get them.

2. A true master of his craft - Unbelievable abilities backed by countless hours practicing and refining his craft. After coming across this young man on YouTube I was instantly hooked. Bravehart soundtrack is even better when you can see him play guitar, harmonica, and recorder not to mention his circular breathing technique was spot on. Kenny G would be impressed. Please buy this album and support this true magical musician.

3. This dude... This is a special dude. - Absolutely sensational. The ONLY drawback (and this is the NITTIEST of nitpicking) is that "Braveheart" is played in a slightly higher key than it was in his video on YouTube. Don't get me wrong, it's still one of the top three songs on the album, easily; it's just the lower key in the video version made the song seem stronger and deeper, but the change is something easily adjusted to. Truly outstanding album; truly outstanding artist.

4. Outstanding - I listen to tons of finger style, and have for two decades. There is a lot of noise these days from players attempting percussive finger style that does not suite the pieces of music it accompanies. Luca’s playing is an exception to this issue. His technique is amazing, and clean. Great melodies, cool covers, my favorite guitar album of (er so far!) Buy it!

2. Best for non-scholars - ... Than the complete -track version. Would have made an outstanding double-album fresh release in , and holds up very well a half- century later. Highly listenable, and recaptures the genius of Bob Dylan at one of the many peaks of his career, maybe the greatest time of them all. (It also really makes me yearn to remember the name of the girl in Pocatello with the white MGA convertible, listening to Blonde On Blonde together in the hills above town.)

1. So Conflicted on this one - I have listened to the entire collection and I must say, I am a Joe Henry fan, always.
There is no one to compare. And so, I compare this to Joe. He has intrigued me me both lyrically and with his instrumental complexities.
This has the promise of both, except one thing. His vocal delivery.
It is as if he wants to hammer us with his lyrics and by this I mean, with a megaphone.
It is quite irritating, and I did not want to dislike this. So, as I said, I listened to the whole thing. Vocally it is so grating that I could not even set the equalizer to correct it.
I am so disappointed I could cry. I do think, however, that Sign and Sparrow are worth downloading.
In order to best hear what i am hearing listen to Your Name On My Tongue.

2. Wow - Big thanks to KCRW, public radio Santa Monica/Los Angeles for playing a cut off the album this morning. It was one of those rare pull over the car to launch shazam moments -I just couldn't wait until I reached my office to look up the programming playlist online, I had to know immediately who was playing. I'm not impressed by the pedigree of an artist, what impresses me and draws me in is the quality and depth of their work.
What you'll find here are beautiful lyrics, rich guitars, hints of Dylan, The Band, a troubadour telling a story, with music and lyrics that support each other with a delicate yet sure match. I've learned I'm coming to this party late, with nearly a dozen albums to his credit, but surely, better late than never -Hey, Thank You Joe.

3. Masterpiece - My favorite thing about this album, is that the listener gets to hear these brilliant heartfelt pieces with the soulful playing of the musicians in the studio in contrast to the stripped down yet still poignant guitar and vocals tracks. It’s almost like a humble nod and testament to the greatness of the players that Joe brings to the studio. A special recognition is due to the tasteful drumming of Jay Bellerose.

4. Joe just doesn't stop.... - Great record on my first listen through. Joe's in great voice...relaxed and strong. The acoustic instrumental backing recalls, in tone and drive, his early Americana records (Shuffletown, criminally out of print, and Short Man's Room), with his son Levon's reed work recalling Van Morrison's best folky work, or the Band's horn section. It's like he's found a record that offers a moment where Joe's past work and his present eclecticism find strong partnership.

1. Summer by George Winston - I remember when this cd first came out, back in . I was a very little child. When the first track played in my home for the first time, I began to gush the happiest of tears. It took me into a daydream much like it’s very own cover picture, the field of sunflowers. I haven’t heard it for years as the cd is tucked away in my storage unit, well preserved. I played it again tonight with a download of it. The happy tears came on once again, like an ocean tide coming to the shore. I needed to hear and feel this again, here in . George Winston’s piano music is a great American treasure! Timeless music, that’s worth the download here on iTunes.

1. She keeps coming with the talent - I have followed Amy Ray with the Indigo Girls and as a solo artist. Of her solo efforts thus far Holler is by far the best. The musicianship, production, vocals, song-writing, deep and personal lyrics resonate into your heart and mind, simply magnificent. I am not a country fan by any steatch of the imagination, however, once in a while a country feeling song will sway me. A good song is a good song no matter the style and Amy's music has me engaged. Congratulations to Amy Ray and her band on a stellar performance. Thank you for sharing your heart, mind and music with the world.

1. Meh - Couldn't help but think this album feels and sounds desperate. I feel it doesn't do justice to anyone collaborator. Feels like it was put together to appease the dull tastes of a broader audience that is not familiar with the artists individual music. 1. Shelter from the Storm - Art expresses universal themes shaped by a specific environment and individual talent. For the singer-songwriter Ásgeir Trausti, the environment is Iceland, and his music reflects the tension between uncontrollable forces of nature and the human quest for shelter and love. In the songs of his debut album In the Silence (Dýrð í dauðaþögn)—the iTunes Deluxe edition carries Icelandic and English versions of each song—his gentle, ethereal voice and acoustic guitar contrast with the sound and fury of drum, bass and keyboards that echo the natural world. Summer Guest (Sumargestur) is an ode to a migratory bird during a short season: “Perched upon a branch of green/He rests his legs from the long journey/Warms my heart with one true song,” Ásgeir sings. On That Day (þennan Dag) is a lyric poem about ephemeral intimacy; “I still think about the possibility of love,” he muses, “I see reflections of that moment now/From that day, just a fleeting glimpse that will not stay.”. Nowhere is the indoor-outdoor polarity more apparent than in Torrent (Nýfallið Regn), in which the storm is a melancholy metaphor for cleansing and Ásgeir’s words reflect the search for comfort: “Merciless though the wind takes hold with freezing cold/Come, my friend, sit with me; take council in the warmth. The soft drumbeat of movement is the common thread of three captivating folk melodies: the title track; Going Home (Heimförin); and In Harmony (Samhljómur). What works as shelter in Iceland offers tranquility anywhere. worldlisteningpost.com

1. Pick Up Cents When You're Looking For a Change... - Starting boldly with the somber "Hookers and Blow"--a title that comes from a joke response to what the "dull" and happily domesticated brothers did last night-- cents is the latest album to offer revealing glimpses into the lives of Kevin and Micheal Bacon, despite it clearly being written from a character's vantage point, as if Kevin was playing a role.
Otherwise the album, like the rest of the Bacon Brothers' repertoire is a mix of sentimental, soulful, and stirring tracks. The title song, cents is an homage to struggling songwriters that quickly has audiences tapping their feet and singing along. Accompanied by Michael on cello, Miles, the next track, is a sweet song of marriage and empty nest syndrome that will remind fans of " Years in Mexico" and "Don't Lose Me Boy" from earlier albums. Kevin probably insisted on juxtaposing that song with his country rock song "Get a Little."
A cover of Alannis Morrisette's You Learn is refreshingly original, and nicely followed up by Kevin's "Wonderful Day", a bittersweet optimistic tune of everyday troubles. Musically, my favorite song is "Above the Clouds," a collaboration with Daryl Hall, parts of which make me swear I'm hearing Aaron Neville. Then there's the fun, almost whimsical "New England Girls" that sounds like a song The Beach Boys could easily play as their own.
If my two cents are worth anything, you'll pick up this album and discover The Bacon Brothers' latest impressive mix of folk, rock, country, and soul when you're looking for a change from your current mix of music.

2. Terrific! Go Get It--You Won't Regret It! - Ten originals and two covers, " " spans full-on rock. blues, country, pop, and yes, folk inflections. This collection melds introspection (often humorous, sometimes darkly so) with passionate vocals and melodies that stay with you and make you glad they do. Kevin and Michael Bacon are backed up by a fabulous band: Ira Siegel on guitars, Frank Vilardi on drums, Joe Mennonna on keyboards, and Paul Guzzone on bass--each one a major talent himself. Together with the Bros themselves, they make this album shine! Of the originals, the title tune, " Miles," "Shade," and"New England Girls" are each alone worth the price of admission, as are the fantastic covers of Alanis Morissette's "You Learn" and Paul Weller's "Above the Clouds"; but all the tunes are wonderful and well worth your attention. "Hookers and Blow" and "Wonderful Day" are meditations on the demons that can wreck your day or even your life; "Get A Little" is a honky-tonkish take on "getting in touch with [one's] inner child." You'll soon find yourself singing right along. I could go on, but that'd keep you from listening to " "! Go get it! You won't regret it!

1. Wish this band were better known - Stumbled on ER by accident when I was in Denver on a book tour. Didn't know anyone in town and had a night free between readings, so wandered into their show. Amazing and awesome. Bonnie's voice is like some crazy mix of Natalie Merchant and Kattel Kaineg. It was weird and wonderful walking into room of people and instantly feeling at home.

2. Amazing Band - This group of musicians are amazingly talented and draw the audiance into their magical gig. Their music is profection and the musicians are truely sincere and a priviliaeg to meet. 1. New Lead Singer Lacks - The Duhks use to be one of my favorite bands - so much so that I sponsored their campaign on indie-gogo for this new album - but as soon as I received my copy my face fell. What happened?!? They ‘went back to their original singer’ from way way long ago - and it was a big mistake because they left behind Sarah Dugas - a voice to be reckoned with - and this album really lacks without her. Track is like a lullaby and from there on out you might as well just go to sleep cos its a bore.

2. Duhks Fan - I saw The Duhks in concert in May in Denver and loved their music. I had never heard of them before this concert and when the concert was over, I bought all of their cd's. 1. Go Appalachia! - Great to hear Jerry, David and the boys playing some great bluegrass. I once heard an interviewer ask Jerry about wanting to play bluegrass and he said, "ya, I still do." This album shows they were among the masters from the start. Me and my grandpa used to enjoy listening to Almost Acoustic together. Great times! I just wish my grandpa was still here to enjoy this with. Appalachian values are pure and true, buried in the heart of everyone and on display in great bluegrass and mountain music like this.

1. I guess I have to say it - I'm shocked that no one has given major props to "all in good fun." WHAT A SONG! It's such a lush melody, smart, authentic and creative lyrics, and a delivery to make anyone's heart ache--this is the best song I've heard this year! "What we want" is also lovely and a great groove. I'm so lucky to have discovered Bess via google since shazam doesn't recognize her. This is an artist I would love to see live. Would LOVE to see her tour with Eels. Keep it up, Bess!

2. What I want I already got (THIS EP) - Bess is such a deliciously talented musician. This EP is the PERFECT gift for the holidays (or really any time). If you've never heard of Bess you should absolutely totally buy this, if you HAVE heard of her... you should absolutely totally buy this! The bottom line is, it's truly a tasty little EP and you should eat it all. But if you are on a diet, then ) you are beautiful and don't even worry about it ) taste "Come Home" and "What We Want" first and then come for the rest at night. i won't tell!

3. This album is TERRIBLE. - It's actually not. But really, no it's not. Really. I was KIDDING.
Bess is one of my favorite artists all around. Decisions is, like, a timeless classic of Bess-ness, while Travel Back is just effing brilliant. BRPBR is no letdown. BUY IT!!!! Also, Bess? You were in Ferndale, MI last night. I had to work, so I couldn't drive down ( hours). I made $ in tips. I would've paid three times that to be off.

4. Freakin Awesome - I mean, I had this EP on repeat for like an entire week. For reals though, Bess comes through with her honest, heartfelt lyrics. And she includes lots of instruments (trumpets, flutes, etc.) and lots of "oh, oh, oh's" that get stuck in your head. I honestly can't choose a favorite song, but if you held a gun to my head, I'd have to pick Come Home and What We Want... see? I couldn't choose just one. You won't be able to either. And if you ever get a chance to see her live, DO IT. She might tell a funny joke or knight you or something. Enjoy!

5. Smooth-Voiced Songstress - I've been a fan of Bess Rogers since her very first record, Decisions Based on Information (which is also great!). The first thing that leaps out of your speakers is Bess's incredibly clear, flexible, and flat-out gorgeous voice. A few seconds later, you realize you're humming along with the track, whether it's a downtempo ballad or an upbeat, bouncy track filled with the sounds of Bess strumming the banjolele (a real instrument, in fact). Bess's songs are catchy without being annoying, clever without trying too hard, and beautiful without being weepy or sappy. She is a first rate talent, and I encourage everyone to get to know her music now. If you do, then I'm sure that, like me, you will be eagerly awaiting everything this young woman has to offer us. Thanks for making great music, Bess. And keep on keeping on!

1. Wonderful Discovery - I didn't know music such as this was being made anymore. I caught one song on the radio and immediately lloked it up. I'm so glad I did. A classical country feel with grounded melodies and creative rhythms. Every track is excellent but the whole album is best enjoyed starting at the beginning and playing through. It's contemporary but nostalgic at the same time. Wonderful

1. An Overlooked Masterpiece - Simply put: This album is a masterpiece - from start to finish. Roy Harper doesn't really get the credit he deserves for his contributions to music. His influence is heavy on other musicians though. Anyone who hasn't heard "The Same Old Rock" and the amazing guitar work by Jimmy Page is missing out for sure. Anyhow, this is the kind of work that will still sound good long after the poppy fads come and go into the nd century.
