1. Bad Mix and/or Mastering - Good performances though - Unfortunately from the opening chords of “Rest of My Life” which are distorted and over-compressed to many of the songs having an irritating high-end EQ, this album is kind of ruined by bad mixing and/or mastering. It’s too bad because the same high-talent performers are there - the same high-quality songwriting is there but it shows you how rushed production can lead to an album that is physically hard to listen to. And no, it’s not my iTunes EQ problem - I always keep that flat so I can hear the production of an album. I find myself getting irritated as I listen to the album, and over-abundance of mid-high to high-end frequencies can do this. Kind of a shame and wish they’d just re-master it and let us download it again.

2. A Dotted Line - Compared to the last couple of CDs “A Dotted Line” lacks the Deep Compassion and heart felt vibes that was so evident in their songs such as “The Lighthouse Tale” & “Out of the Woods” just to name a few. Hopefully they will draw from the same well; as they did on their last CD next time they get in the studio. That been said I bought “A Dotted Line” to add to my collection of Nickel Creek. These guys are still awesome.

3. Give Nickel Creek a Try - So glad they got back together for another album. If you're tired of Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Lady Ga Ga, and all the other mainstream stuff, give Nickel Creek a try. If you like country music, but want something with more substance, give Nickel Creek a try. All of their albums are incredible. Each one a little different from the other, but all great!

4. What rock did I live under? - I literally just came across this group while switching channels to an ACL TV special and was immediately enthralled by their sound. Siri couldn't recognize a single song so I waited till the end to find out their names. So happy and looking fwd to hearing their awesome music from now on

5. Heaven Personified! - What can I say? Nickel Creek has been one of my most favorite bands since they first came out with the Lighthouse Song and that was already a good foray into their long career at that point! I nearly jumped out of my skin when the tour was announced and the new recording is icing on the cake,
Chris Thile and Sean and Sarah Watkins have an amazing skill set as individuals and yet as Nickel Creek they are an unstoppable force! Sarah sings like an angel - and yet there is an organic earthness that is undescribable. Sean plays and sings well and as a songwriter, he writes really compelling stuff - and Chris Thile plays the mandolin as only he can! I love the mix of this album - from the more standard sounds to the rocking Hayloft to the blazing instrumental Elephant in the Corn - it's all there right where we all hoped it would be! Play on, old friends, play on!

6. Listen before you leap - I bought this title without previewing it first because I enjoyed the previous Nickel Creek albums and read the reviews online that said they were “back!" While a few songs here have that classic Nickel Creek appeal (e.g. Christmas Eve), I would suggest that the interested consumer listen to Hayloft, You Don’t Know, and Destination before buying the whole album. There’s no denying their chops, but for me, only of the songs on this album will get repeated listening.

7. Worth the Wait!!! - I listened to this album a bunch of times in the last few days. It’s just as repayable as everything Nickel Creek did before. Awesome lyrics and great music!! This album made the hiatus worth it. I can tell that these guys weren’t going to put out an album unless it met their own very high standards. They are most definitely not sell outs. Definitely worth the wait. If it isn’t broken don’t fix it!!!!! I just hope we don’t have to wait so long for the next one. Can’t wait to see the concert!!

8. THANK YOU GOD! - When Nickel Creek parted ways the world became a darker place. I have been hoping that they would come back to us. Now that they have, all is rite in the world again. I have the best memories of going state to state to catch each show and I can't wait to see you guys again. It's a great record. Welcome back!

9. Best Album This Decade - Friends, let me tell you something: this is the greatest album I have heard in a very long time. I love music very much, and I don't throw that statement around like most people would. Every song on this record is so good, that I have listened to the entire album through and through easily over ten times since its release this past Tuesday. Yeah, only four days, and I have every single tune stuck in my head. These guys truly know music, and trust me, it shows! Chris Thile, Sean and Sara Watkins changed bluegrass music when they first got together, and man oh man, am I thankful for it! I know Nickel Creek won't stay together after their tour, but man, I will pray every day that they will come back together for a thirty year anniversary! Nickel Creek, thank you for your music and talents, and I will forever be a fan of your awesomeness.

10. So glad to have new tunes from these guys…BUT. - Every cut on the album is good…several are just plain wonderful. But WTH with the song length?? Two minutes and change on several songs!?!!?! Just about the time you really get rolling with it…..it’s over! They should be . or minutes each with a couple or three that run or minutes. I want to hear them play. We’re not trying to cut these things for a ’s AM radio play list. On that front alone: disappointed.

11. Great come back for Nickel Creek! - I have been a Nickel Creek fan for about years, of which I have been spent waiting for new music from a band that was on an indefinite hiatus. I never gave up that I would one day get a new album from them and I was not disappointed. A Dotted Line for the most part is pretty classically Nickel Creek, Love of Mine seems to be a mix of Hellena and green and grey with a beautiful melancholy fresh sound. The blaring exception to this is the song Hayloft, when I first listened to this album I got about half way through the song before I realized my iPod wasn’t on shuffle and this was still Nickel Creek. It is very out of place with the rest of the album and at first listen I was skeptical, It’s very popish, however it is addicting! The beat is good and strong the lyrics repetitive, but it is truly the the ear worm of the album. It took me a few listens to like it but now it’s a standout instead of seaming too out of place. While I like the song but I am glad this style is just in one song, a whole album of it would be way too much of a departure for them. Where Is Love Now is a beautiful song which features Sara Watkins soft voice beautifully. The st of May is a great tribute to a more classic folk sound, which also happens to come right after Hayloft, don’t let the contrast throw you too much ;) This album also offers two instrumental songs which are always a pleasure listening to the band show off their skills. Over all I really like this album a good classic sound with some risks that I think pay off. My only real disappointment was that it wasn’t longer!

12. Comfortable Collaboration needs a Grammy! - Only trouble with this album is that there are "only" tracks. Standing firmly on the shoulders of the trio's history as well as their individual musical journeys, this album is like coming home from getting your PhD in life and realizing that what you missed, what you needed, what matters most is right there on the front porch and between the dotted line of what comes...next. Kudos to leveraging a year break into an investment in art by honoring the musical genius Sean, Chris, and Sara have been gifted with.

13. Oh my, how they're grown! - I pre-ordered and could hardly stand the wait. This is possibly the FRESHEST collection of acoustic music ever. The original pieces are astonishing, their playing and singing spot on. And then, the traditionals, sweet and traditional. Great work Nickel Creek. I had forgotten how much I love you.

1. Absolutely Stunning! - I stumbled upon these guys after hearing a live performance of Movement and Location and absolutely fell in love with them! The Punch Brothers are bluegrass with a wonderful alternative twist, bringing to mind bands like Radiohead and The Strokes. I'm not even a fan of Radiohead, but these guys take the best aspects of these types of bands and add a bluegrass flare. It's impossible to describe how wonderfully complex their songs are, you just need to sit back with a pair of headphones and just soak it all in. Off this album I'd recommend Movement and Location, This Girl, NYC, and Who's Feeling Young Now?, but honestly this whole album shines. This is a must buy!

2. Not a Single Bad Track - I cannot describe this band's brilliance! The sound is folksy perfection and the music is different and interesting and surprising in the best way. Chris Thile's voice is amazing, and his mandolin playing makes me feel privileged just to be able to listen. The band is all-around so magnificent and resonant - i can't stop listening :).

3. Gorgeous - I came upon the Punch Brothers via Pandora. I immediately bought this album, and I sat on my couch and listened to the entire album start to finish. This album is beautifully written. There are surprises throughout with gorgeous vocal and instrumental sound. There's so much talent on this album that it takes my breath away. BUY THIS ALBUM

4. Best Album of so far!!! - Great album, loved it!!! To Those giving the one and two star ratings... Are we serious right now? Kirk why don't you explain to me what a "Christian Boy" voice is? If they were trying to go after the hipster crowd, he would start singing like Marcus Mumford. You all need to remember most of these guys (punch bros)have been playing bluegrass since they were - years old. Tell me how many of your music tastes have changed in the past years? Hell, even - years! My guess is quite a bit. So get off on the whole I wish they sounded like early albums. They're world class musicians, and world class musicians are always pushing boundaries.

5. Stunning! Ravishing! A real Treat - These guys played at my school and shocked me into silence. They have such chemistry as a band, and you can tell they absolutely love playing with each other. How rare is that!? Probably not really, but still they are truly stupendous. This album is one of a kind. There is absolutely no way for me to pick a favorite song, because all are so grand. Wow, wow, wow.

6. Stagnant bla - Not a fan. Chris Thile still carries that christian boy quality in his voice, which I'd hoped would become a thing of the past with maturity. His music is evolving beautifully, but my main complaint is that his voice remains stagnant. He does not seem to work at all on his voice, and it needs a complete makeover. Not comfortable with what I'm hearing. It's just bla, in my opinion. NEXT!

7. Fantastic - I heard this band play "This Girl" on Conan, and I loved the song. I ended up buying the album, and I don't regret it. While I could've lived without the two instrumental-only tracks on this album, the songs don't disappoint. I like how it has a bluegrass feel, but it also sounded somewhat alternative. My favorites were "Patchwork Girlfriend", "This Girl", and "Don't Get Married Without Me."

8. Amazing - Absolutely fantastic album! I've been a fan of Chris Thile for probably ten years almost and his voice is one of my favourites. The combo of his voice and mandolin is is comforting music to me. Like going home. In particular, Clara, This Girl, Patchwork Girlfriend, and Don't Get Married Without Me are my favourites!

9. Exellent!!!!!!!!! - This Album is really what I have been waiting for from Punch Brothers. I loved the first two albums, but this one totally floored me. This album has not come out of my CD player since I bought it. Punch Brothers have just hit that point, where they have developed into one solid unit. I love this album, and that they cowrote of them with Josh Ritter(NY City and Hindred Dollars)

10. One of the best bands of this Generation - This is their most radio-friendly release to date, yet it still pushes boundaries and bends genres in ways that are thrilling and witty. A more song-centered approach than the instrumentally expansive "Punch" (which I consider to be one of the greatest albums of all time), "Who's Feeling Young Now" shows that the Punch Brothers are still creating music that will endure long after these boys and their current audience are no longer feeling, or being, young themselves. If you love music, don't pass it up.

11. it's great! - i have been a fan of chris thile since his nickel creek days. that being said, i feel like generally he can do no wrong musically, even if i'm not personally feeling it. but i am personally feeling this album. in fact, i love it! and that was unexpected because "antifogmatic" left me a bit disappointed, though i appreciated a lot about it. what i love about the punch brothers is that since "how to grow a woman from the ground," to "punch"...and beyond you always get a unique offering from these guys. i like that, because i cannot pigeonhole them into just typical bluegrass, because they are most definitely not that. they bring so much to music with their chosen instruments, always uncovering a new sort of style. favorite tracks on the album so far:
"don't get married without me"-it's just fun and dramatic musically. different from anything before and one of the standout tracks.
"kid a"-such a great choice and superb radiohead cover.
"who's feeling young now?"-the title track really does give a good feel of what this album is about and it's just darn catchy. this is probably the most ear pleasing song on the album.
"this girl"-a sacreligous prayer of sorts put to a fun strummy melody.
overall, it really is just a great album. really easy to listen to, and get into. i haven't stopped since i downloaded it! :)

12. Great album! - I was mixed on most of the Punch Brothers previous works. Being a huge Nickel Creek fan, I love Chris Thile but didn't think he quite meshed with the new band. But this album has so much depth and diversity, so much intelligence, it has truly won me over. This may actually be better than any album Chris did with Nickel Creek. Patchwork Girlfriend is a standout track for me, but really, there is not a bad song on the entire album.
2012-02-19
13. Punch Brothers - I saw Punch Brothers open for Paul Simon last fall and received Antifogmatic as a Christmas gift. I really enjoyed them on stage and equally enjoy their sound. I have no other album like this. Harmonies are stellar! I had no idea they had another album released until I saw it iTunes' front page. I will be checking this one out very soon.
2012-02-16
14. Amazing. - This is truly an album that takes a couple listens to truly appreciate. The first time I played it, I thought it was good, but wasn't blown away. I gave it a second listen, though, and wow. This album is remarkable. The melodies, progressions and lyrics are typical Punch Brothers, and Chris Thile and the others are spot on. The first song alone is worth the cost of the album.
2012-02-16
15. Phenomenal Album Overall - This album actually impressed me alot with it's diversity in terms of songwriting- you have almost straight "Pop" tunes (Clara), instrumental breakneck-paced bluegrass shuffles (Flippen), and some amazingly emotional pieces with very strong melodies (Soon or Never).
This album has proved that the group is capable of much more than simply "Musicians Music", which was primarily what their last release "Antifogmatic" was. The intensity and strength that this quintet can create with their limited instrumentation is outstanding. Listen to the layers in their cover of Radiohead's "Kid A", and on the tracks "Movement and Location" and "Hundred Dollars". Use headphones for "Kid A"- an almost Binaural effect occurs with the outstanding production. It sounds as if you are being enveloped by the instruments surrounding you. "Antifogmatic" was and still is one of my favorite albums that I own- and I am very, very pleased with this new follow-up. Take a listen. standout tracks: Flippen, Patchwork Girlfriend, Hundred Dollars, Soon or Never, Kid A, Who's Feeling Young Now?

16. Who's Feeling the Punch Brothers Now - If you've liked any of Chris Thile's bands (Nickel Creek, Punch Brothers), or Noam Pikelny's albums, or enjoy music that blends the genres of country, folk, bluegrass, blues, jazz, and rock, then check this one out. I've listening to it only one and a half times and I'm thoroughly impressed. It is a very different album than Punch or Antifogmatic, which only shows the growth these guys are capable of. There is a focus on complex rhythm rather than long bluegrass soloing, which just proves in a different way how talented and versatile these guys are, and also just how great they are at harmonizing. As a result of the emphasis on rhythm, the cover of Radiohead's Kid A fits in beautifully. On first listen it doesn't seem to flow like Antifogmatic does, but i think with more listens it will become even richer. Also as a songwriter I can't help but appreciate the care these guys put into crafting great lyrics too. Not to be missed.

17. Good Music, Uninspired Cover Art - I was unfamiliar with this band and just happened to see their album posted on the main page. The main thing that caught my eye was the striking similarity between their cover and that of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals (even the same color scheme.) I normally don't comment on the cover art but it seemed like too much of a ripoff to ignore. The music on the other hand is good. I especially like "Who's feeling young now?" and "New York City." This band could definitely have a lasting future.
2012-02-14
18. Third Time's a Complete and Utter Charm - 'Punch' was good, 'Antifogmatic' was great, 'Who's Feeling Young Now?' is amazing! It has been so interesting to watch and listen to this quintet develop their unique sound. While pushing the harmonic boundaries on 'Antifogmatic', 'Who's Feeling' plays it a little more safe in terms of concrete melodies that are perhaps more ear pleasing than some of their earlier songs. However, don't think of this as a downgrade in the slightest. The production here is first rate. Many listeners will notice this record definitely has a "studio" feel to it. Some enhancements have been made to the production, and in my opinion, it lifts this record even higher. The virtuosity of all the players is here as usual, nothing short of perfection. It seems that the group has finally fully embraced the connections they have been making into the Alternative music genre. Their live renditions of Radiohead suggested that they were starting their music in that direction ('Kid A' is pitch-perfect by the way). As a result, this record ends up feeling like one that could be nominated for Best Alternative album, even if the band plays bluegrass instruments. I can't wait to leave this disc in my car stereo for months to come, because as we've learned with the Punch Brothers, their music only gets better with each listen. I can only hope that this album will finally start to give them the recognition they deserve to have. I just noticed that they contributed a track to the "Hunger Games" soundtrack, which should definitely help get their name out there. The third time around is indeed the charm for Punch Brothers. Yes indeed.

19. Still Going Strong - Witty, catchy, punchy. Hopes were high for this album and Punch Brothers did not disappoint. They are really breaking out of their past reputations with this album, except for their reputation for being fantastic musicians. I get the impression that with Punch Brothers they are able to play all of the music they have always wanted to be able to play, not sticking to a particular genre or style of playing. This keeps things fresh and interesting with each listening. I also really enjoyed having another Radiohead cover (Kid A) on this album. If you haven't already downloaded this album you should do so right now. You won't regret it. And if you don't have the other two albums go ahead and get those as well. These guys are awesome!

1. All-In-One - Punch Brothers are not bluegrass. I've said it before, and I'll probably say it again at some point. They're all such masterful and versatile musicians that they can't help but deviate from the roots of their instruments. Punch Brothers are an everything band. They play every genre. They dress themselves up in bluegrass to fool the unsuspecting, and bust out rock-esque tunes like "Magnet" (which, it should be noted, made me laugh in spite of myself—and that's a good thing). If you've not heard them yet, and you're still convinced they're just a really good bluegrass band, I urge you to listen to at least the following: - "Magnet": A high-energy rock-grass song about a particularly...aggressive...couple. Gets bonus points for lightning-fast banjo picking and rad octave harmonies. - "Julep": A strangely melancholy journey of a song that, as it attempts, reminds one of a back porch in spring. The climbing bass line intro and heart-wrenching opening lyrics catch the listener off guard in the most beautiful way. Gets bonus points for plucking away at my heartstrings like they were Thile's mandolin strings and making me feel emotions I didn't know existed. - "My Oh My": A strange song that can't be easily or comfortably pigeonholed into a genre. It's its own thing. The riff is really cool (you'll know what riff I mean), the sound of the verses contrasts with that of the chorus, and the swell of strings at the end made my heart swell along with the song. Bonus points for a masterfully-written and spectacularly-executed mandolin solo (yes, MANDOLIN solo).

2. Special - I love this album, it's so different than most music and makes me wonder what else a band could do with acoustic instruments. Familiarity is so cool, because the same song is played in different styles. Passepied is arranged perfectly for these instruments such that they bring out something new from it. Some more favs: forgotten, Julep, I blew it off... These guys have a unique sound, tasteful creativity, and mastery over their instruments. This is music thanks!

3. Can’t. Turn. This. Off. - I’ve been a Chris Thile fan since the debut Nickel Creek album. Saw Punch Brothers live during their first tour and this album showcases them beautifully. I’ve listened to little else since purchasing it. I try, but find myself thinking “this isn’t doing it for me,” and turn on Phosphorescent again. There are worse addictions I guess.
2015-05-15
4. A little obsessed now - Have been aware of Punch Brothers for a while via their mandolin player Chris Thile’s work on the Goat Rodeo Sessions, and love for Coen brother movies (they contributed to the soundtack for Inside Llewyn Davis) - but I'm not too familiar with Bluegrass, so haven't sought out their music before. Decided to download this album and…. dayum... they're so good. And The Phosphorescent Blues is like one of those great relationships that gets better and more interesting the more time you spend with it. You don't need to be a Bluegrass aficionado to love this - if you’re interested at all, give it a go. Just plug in the earphones and immerse – amazing stuff.

5. Don't lie. It's a freaking great album! - Chris is one of the best and talented musicians on multiple instruments that I can think of. He amazes me. Not too showy on this album but the music is more song like if that makes sense. This is a great great great album and I recommend to anyone. You don't have to be a modern bluegrass fan at all. It's just great music. That's all I can describe about it. Buy it, seriously.

6. Losing their Punch - First off, I have been a big fan of the Punch Brothers. The Blind Leaving the Blind was a brilliant, daring leap into a new musical landscape. The Who's Feeling Young Now album continued to push the boundaries of the sonic possibilities of mandolin, fiddle, banjo, guitar, and bass in a tightly arranged neopop setting. But this latest album has stalled out. The innovative ideas from the earlier works are starting to be repeated as cliches. Chris started this group with the bar set really high and maybe it is asking too much to expect it to be set higher every time. Let's hope the next album doesn't lapse into the same formula.

7. As good as it gets. - What a gorgeous album. All the members are phenomenal, but Chris Thile is, in my opinion, one of the best musicians in the world. He writes, composes, sings, and oh yeah, he plays one hell of a mandolin. You just can't say enough about these guys. When a group this talented gets together, and are allowed to maximize their creativity, what you have is something so absolutely magical you find it hard to believe it's real. Just beautiful music.
2015-02-18
8. Not as strong as their last album - I'm a big fan of Punch Brothers, but I'm not as crazy about this album as other reviewers. It's definitely worth listening to, but I was hoping for more songs like Who's Feeling Young Now, Movement and Location, and Soon or Never. I like the fact that they don't stick with the norms, and aren't afraid to explore. It keeps their music interesting. But if they are going to explore, then how about more songs like Kid A.
2015-02-04
9. They never skip a beat! - Great musicians deserve praise for their hard work and efforts. Surprised by the Debussy piano piece, 'Passapied', which I played a long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away). Would like to see more classical interpretations on future albums. As always, Punch Bro never skip a beat!
2015-01-28
10. Superb! - How to grow a band indeed. The best album yet from PB. Of course, they've always been a group of brilliant musicians playing beautiful, demanding music. But now, they are fulfilling the promise of being the new "true north" for contemporary acoustic music. There hasn't been album like this since the first David Grisman Quintet album. It's that important. Grok it. Looking forward to the next few...

11. Absolutely incredible - I have listened to every one of PB’s albums, all of Nickel Creek’s stuff, and I’m even a big fan of Chris Thile’s old solo albums from when he was younger. This album does NOT disappoint. It is a departure from “Who’s Feeling Young Now?” and “Antifogmatic,” both wonderful albums, but in a good way. The T-Bone Burnett influence is noticeable. You can actually listen to the entirety of this NEW album at NY Times’ Press Play online, and I have listened to it all. “Magnet” is upbeat and sexy, while Chris continues his love affair with classical music with the gorgeous “Passepied” and “Prelude." “Boll Weevil” is something like “Rye Whiskey” to me. “My Oh My” and “I Blew It Off”s references to the modern-day annoyances of technology are relatable and interesting when paired with bluegrass sounds. “Little Lights” is a beautiful ballad that swells with emotion, and is the perfect ending to this grown-up album. I am not surprised that this album was as good as was expected.

12. Thanks Punch Bros - When I was a kid, certain musicians or groups made me want to play and explore music. For example, Dave Matthews led me to the jazz scene and caused me pick up a guitar. Seeing Bela Fleck open for DMB made me want to play banjo and got me into bluegrass and classical. It had been a long time since a band had inspired me like that before I found Punch Bros via Yo Yo Ma Goat Rodeo Chris Thile Punch Bros. Thanks Punch Bros for working so hard to stay exploratory and not fall victim to the wrong kind of success. I sincerely appreciate it. Another great album I will listen to a thousand times and I hope very much I get to see you here in Austin.

1. Nothing else quite like it - If I were stranded on a desert island with one CD to listen to, this would be it. These are bluegrass instruments, but don't expect bluegrass. It's sort of classical, sort of storytelling, sort of folky, sort of urban discord, and reflects Thile's divorce and what follows. It's five tremendous musicians that blend seamlessly and harmoniously together to create a true masterpiece. The five-part movement is genius on display. You might not know what to do with it at first, but should you persevere, will swing your emotions from deep reflection and melancholy sadness to playful optimism. The intro to movement is extraordinary. All five work together in a narrative that feels like a symphony. Sheesh. Wish I could do that. The peice "Sometimes" feels like a counterweight--a gift--to help the listener regain equilibrium and inject some lightness and relief from the emotional journey of the Blind Leaving the Blind. The final chord of the song resonates to heaven, with the major third given just a bit of emphasis to say "feel joy in your heart."

2. Incredible musicians, over-thought music - Ehhh... is what comes to mind when listening to this record. With such a formidable group of musicians lead by the virtuosic Chris Thile, I would have hoped to connect with the music and the players through music and songwriting. It's very bourgeois in its playing and delivery and doesn't make a connection to those who support the music. Huge disappointment.
2010-07-21
3. Call it avant-garde folk/blue grass? Why not - First of all, I have to say there is a reason the Punch Brothers are on the same label as amazing bands such as Wilco, it is because they write amazing music. Chris Thile is a musical genius, and his band mates' mastery of their instruments is unquestionable. The music is so moving, I feel like I am going through a divorce right along Thile when I listen to the Blind Leaving The Blind.
I first heard of the Punch Brothers a few years ago - a teacher I had in high school is the brother of one of the members and I have been a huge fan ever since.

4. Punch - After hearing the group on Prairy Home Companion and sampeling the songs I ordered the album. It was a mistake and if I could return the album for a refund, I would. The songs are self indulgant and musicianship sophomoric. The intricate playing I expected is no where to be found unless you count fast runs up and down the minor scale but nothing is blended in to a cohesive song you want to care about. I have never written a review or complained about a purchas but this was a huge mistake. I was hopeing for more. Don't buy this album!

5. so disappointed... - I adore Chris Thile. The Punch Brothers are tremendous- just saw them live last week and bought the new CD. I know it is technically impressive, but feels self serving and like the side trip Bela Fleck took when he lost many of us. This one is for you who drink too much coffee and have a frenetic soul. I will wait patiently for another CD like How to Grow a Woman from the Ground. THAT one is six stars. Sorry Chris..... but I still love you.

6. A must-buy for Thile fans. - Chris has long proved to us of the musical genius that he is and has confirmed our opinion of him with this album. While Thile definitely isn't the only attributor to the album's masterpiece, he is definitely the largest one. His four movement piece "The Blind Leaving the Blind" is a masterpiece of new progressive bluegrass that can only be equaled by himself. Famed banjo player Noam Pikelny also offers us a much more vivid insight to his talents through his role in the album as well. So much so that during some parts of the album, you could swear Bela Fleck were playing banjo instead of him. All in all, the band play together and compliment eachother flawlessly. This album is a must-buy for any fan of the bluegrass genre, providing a soft and progressive side to such a modern form of music entertainment.

7. Continually Amazed. - Everytime I listen to this album, I'm struck by its virtuosity, its beauty, and its cohesiveness. In my opinion, it is the most underrated album of . Don't think of it as bluegrass, if that makes you question whether you want to buy it; these compositions are so rich and complex and experimental, that they transcend any genre. Can't say enough good things.

8. Off the hook... - We just saw the Punch Brothers in concert. I went to see Chris Thile but ended up not being able to keep my eyes off the playing of Noam Pikelny on Banjo! (Imagine Bela Fleck with soul!!) ALL these guys were off the hook!! And even though not "live", the energy on this album is just like being there!!!

9. Jazzy Classy Bluegrass - I am a Theory Composition major in school and listening to these guys playing together really puts all the knowledge of my schooling to practice. Chris is simply unbelievable and given the incredible musicians he's shared time playing, they truly formed an amazing band. The touch of jazz in the music is quite amazing! I absolutely love the respect they have for each other while playing, knowing when each instrument should play and what to play. Their music is INCREDIBLE. I just saw these guys at the Birchmere Theatre in VA - Just like Nickel Creek (Chris Thile's former band) - they are amazing. I strongly suggest buying this album.

10. Sick Fingerwork, Okay Compositions - I was so thrilled to pick up this album - I sampled it on iTunes, and bought it in the store. The musicianship is wild - I'm a fiddle player and can respect the insane stringed instrument skills that load this album. Unfortunately, I'm not super impressed with the compositions. It might just be personal preference, but most of the songs seem like organized chaos, and don't have a significant melodic theme. It's kind of all over the place. I prefer an album that follows a more memorable pattern.

11. You've never heard anything like this! - This is by far the most refreshing record I've heard in a while. This is true progressive bluegrass. The Blind Leaving the Blind is the most unique work, classical or otherwise, that I've ever heard, and I love it! The tempo, style, and key changes that are rampant in each movement enhance the story line of the piece incredibly. Also this is the first time I've really heard real orchestration of instruments in a bluegrass band-every time one of these guys plays its very deliberate to create specific sonic pallette. Case in point-BLB rd movement opening. WOW!!!! Hear this record, and you'll never be the same.

12. Like good wine... - So I bought this album a couple weeks ago after listening to a clip on NPR (which I recommend all of you listen to if you want to find new good music). I am a big Nickle Creek/Chris Thile/Sean Watkins fan. I have been listening to them for a long time and will probably buy everything they release even if it gets bad reviews. But let me tell you! you will not be disappointed if you purchase this album. The music is rich and complex. Much like good wine, it gets better with age. There is too much to take in the first time you listen, complex rhythms, strange and emotional lyrics, and of course some of the best musicianship I have heard in this genre. I like the fact that there is not a dobro player in this album. In this way they sort of break away from the expected bluegrass sound. I hear influences of Bela Fleck there and so many others... However, I suppose that many will not like this album. This should not discourage you though. Those who do not like this album will probably not appreciate it because it is way over their head. Like those people who don't get "No Country for Old Men," they need everything right on the surface. This album needs to be sipped and savored.

13. muhria - Pure genious. Goodness i cannot believe how everytime i listen to Punch i feel overwhelmed by how much work has been put into this and the originality of it all is remarkable. This is music, not artificial or fake, but beauty and sorrow and emotion emitted through these men's voices and instruments. Passion. God-given talent that deserves attention and more than one listen. This is music that challenges you and grows with every unbiased listen. i challenge you to listen to this without any expectations...just listen. is there anyway to make no 'album only' songs itunes?? i bought the cd in stores but i would like to purchase "i know you know" without having to buy the entire cd a second time.

14. An Instant Classic - I cannot say enough good things about the talented Mr. Thile and his fellow Punch Brothers. This album is filled with emotion ranging from joy to despair. From the bouncy and fun opener Punch Bowl all the way to the solemn piece It'll Happen, it is a complete work of art. If you ever have a chance to witness them live, don't miss it. I am seeing them twice this spring and I couldn't be more excited. Happy listening!

15. Better every time - Upon my first listen through this album, I was afraid that Thile had overlooked making beautiful music for the sake of making something new and original. But this is not the case. The more I listen, the more I find both within this piece. It takes repeated plays, particularly of the four movements, to appreciate the interplay between its lyrical and instrumental qualities, but it is not without immediate charm as well. Basically, this album is something entirely new and inventive, but its complex beauty will stand the test of time.

16. First "Best Album" of the year! - Like another reviewer said, to appreciate a work of art one must first be shocked. I was struck by how accurate this was in reference to this album. The first time I listened, I was appalled by the dissonance present in the first track, until I realized that, as all of Thile's music, the album is a corollary to something happening in his life, and it parallels a very discordant time in his life (his recent divorce). This is a truly brilliant piece of work that showcases not only Thile's virtuosity, but the incredible talents of his bandmates. They have truly reinvented bluegrass as we know it.

17. Very nice indeed. Interesting musical direction. - I've been a huge fan of Nickelcreek for several years and have been lucky enough to see them live. Hopefully one day they will meet again but in the meantime, Chris Thile and the Punch Brothers are turning out some very interesting and eclectic music to say the least. Very accomplished musicians making a very accomplished cd. That's how music should be: Pure, simple and beautiful. Looking forward to seeing them live if and when they come to Los Angeles. By the way, if you're in LA, you should check out Sara and Sean Watkins (of Nickelcreek, I'm sure you all knew that) at the Watkins Family Hour at Largos. I've checked out their set a few times and its always a great time with interesting guests like Glen Phillips, etc.

18. An amazing hybrid of Bluegrass, Folk and Prog Rock - If anyone had the musical genius to pull this off it had to be Chris Thile. One second it's a straight ahead Bluegrass style then suddenly it morphs into time signatures you'd expect to find on a Dream Theater or classic Prog Rock record. Chris hinted at this on "Deceiver" but here it's in all it's refined glory. I'll be amazed if this one doesn't blow up huge.

19. Punch, brothers! Punch with care! - It's no surprise that the release of “Punch,” the first record from the new super-group, the Punch Brothers, is a revolutionary, genre-bending, musical masterpiece. Could we expect anything less from Chris Thile and his fellow band of musical prodigies? Absolutely not. “Punch” narrates the ill-fated marriage and divorce of Thile. The record isn't a feel-good, make-you-smile album; it deals with heavier issues - divorce, heartbreak, and faith. While bluegrass purists may have issues with genre-bending of the Punch Brothers, "Punch" centers on the matters that are essentially at the heart of bluegrass - the presence of pain and the heaviness of life. The Punch Brothers primarily express themselves through their instruments, though vocals are placed throughout the record. While most of “The Blind Leaving the Blind” is instrumental, the music is heartbreaking; we feel the emotion and the weight of the situation on Thile. “Punch” requires active listening. The Punch Brothers beg you not only to listen to their record, but they also want you to wrestle with the music, to discover it, and to understand it. This is the complex music to which you listen over and over again, and you understand more and more about it with each listen. Every time you listen to the record, the music unfolds itself more, both emotionally and musically. It’s both beautiful and challenging, which is what music actually should be. “Punch” is a fabulous masterpiece from five musical geniuses. It is a great purchase for anyone who appreciates legitimately brilliant music. Hopefully, this is just a taste of what’s to come from this dazzling band.

20. Wonderful, Amazing, Brilliant - I'd been waiting for this album to come out for quite awhile and started to worry that I might have built it up too big in my mind and that I might be disappointed when it finally did come out. How wrong could I have been? This album completely blows my mind! How could you go wrong with these super-talented guys? The Blind Leading the Blind (and every other track for that matter) is so beautifully written. You can really feel the emotion behind them. Way to go Chris... and Gabe, Noam, Greg, and Chris!

21. Wonderful CD - It is a shame that Itunes in all of their genius put this CD under pop. Seriously i wonder what Chris thinks about being called pop on any cd, much less this one. I would describe the four movements as almost an epic, a great story with high and lows in the lyrics and music. He is one of the most talented, thoughtful musicians in today music world.

1. disappointed - Too much politics, yuck, leave it out of my music. These guys are a great band, but this album as a whole comes off as petty and overly topical. With that said, there are some gems on here, such as Like It's Going Out Of Style. Thile needs to quit his radio job and spend more time on his lyrics ffs.
2018-12-10
2. Hope this isn't an indication of things to come - I LOVE Punch Brothers, but this album in my opinion is sub par. Punch Brothers are a great band, but this album had a feel of an experimental album rather than what I have come to expect from this band. I hope that in the future their albums are better.
2018-08-20
3. Evolution is good - They're not the Radiohead of Bluegrass. They're not the U of classical music. They're finally just Punch Brothers. These arrangements are dense, weighty, and yet they never sink. It's easy to listen to music this difficult. So much detail to enjoy stuffed into these nine tracks. I have listened to their music casually before, but now the hooks are sunk deep into me. What a gift.
2018-07-30
4. Political Trash - Political trash ruins yet another (insert film, actor, song etc) I'm not mad I'm just disappointed. Well no. I'm mad. Mad that I funded another pathetic attempt by former talent to pander. Whether it's movies or music it seems the new trend is to take a political opinion that the general populace holds and pretend you're the resistance.
It's not like I even want my entertainment to be in favor of my political opinion. Keeps politics out of entertainment. It's divisive, it's obnoxious and if you want to pretend "it's too important of an issue to stay silent! We have to do something and use our platform to get the message out!" then you go ahead and pretend but you know you're a fraud and that's enough for me. I really love the punch brothers and I was foolish enough to think they'd be above this pathetic pandering but I was wrong. Shame too because the vocals and instrumental work is fantastic as always but it's all in service of nothing. What you have here is a waste of talent. What you have here is instrumental and vocal brilliance delivering political commentary on the level of a sitcom episode that ran during the election. The punch brothers artistic integrity is now on the level of a sitcom. really was the worst year ever. It inspired artists and talented individuals to preach to the masses in favor of entertaining us and creating art. Such a shame.

5. Personally I love it, and I saw them live last night - I saw these guys live this week and as a guitar player it blows my mind how good they are compared to how these very intricate albums are on tape. They nail it - no questions asked. As much as they'd hate this most likely - I think Phosphorescent Blues will ultimately be known as their primary master work. It defined this genre. This album is very very good, and I believe true fans of the bands wanderlust, desire to hit the heart and head, and musicianship will find expected satisfactions here. Once you climb a mountain, you can't climb it again for the first time - so they climbed the mountain next to the Phosporescent Blues, and look back on their lives and all of ours which have gotten more complicted and angst ridden in the last couple years. I see this as a self produced evolution - and nuanced expressions of the times.

6. One of their best - Really enjoy the scope of their ambition. Some of the albums have gotten there, and some have a few high points but otherwise leave me cold. This one is one of the good ones. Diverse, energetic, heartfelt, and most of all . . . the songs really work and the instrumentals bring the muso energy. Very much recommended. They've truly pushed past their origins in "newgrass" and now have created a sort of genre all to themselves.

7. Disappointed - I’m a big Punch Brothers fan, but I found this album to be both boring and polarizing. The lyrics were far too wordy (but that’s common of Chris Thile) and the melodies were far from memorable. I liked the instrumentals, however. They are great instrumentalists. I don’t know why the Punch Brothers are determined to punish themselves by making such intricate and subtle music that will have to be performed live. I think that they had an opportunity to reach out musically to the general public and widen their audience, but they went in the opposite direction and made an album that might even be too dense for one their own fans like myself. The politics didn’t help.

8. Stupendous!!! - Sitting here grinning ear-to-ear! The first two songs are nothing short of stellar! If you’ve never experienced the Punch Brothers, you’re totally missing out! It’s as if the Greek god Apollo handpicked musicians who were meant to be together! It’s a shame they don’t tour more than they do! But I’m so happy they have a new album on the way. Do yourself a favor and download this album. Guaranteed you’ll buy the rest of their catalog!

1. Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen-On The Edge - The amount of talent that Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen posses is something that you someone can only truly realize when they hear it for themselves. Frank Solivan is a master at the mandolin and the fiddle and holds nothing back on this album. The album consists of ten incredible tracks. My favorite, the title track, "On The Edge Of Letting Go" is a song he wrote about a friend with a mental illness. The track is deep, yet beautifully constructed and accurately depicts genuine emotion. This album is one of my favorites and is home to a variety of emotion and a collection of wonderfully produced music.

1. Kicks you know what! - Hot picking and harmonies with an edge that pusheds beyond pure traditional bluegrass. The playing is superb with contributions by veteran Rob Ickes on several tracks. Munford, Luquette, Booth are all clean, sharp and CREATIVE, with Solivan's mandolin out front. This has all the elements and sounds of tradition, but pushes past it in my opinion with high energy. Great listening, very cool CD!

1. From The Bay, grew up on Green Day... - I can truly say that their renditions are actually pretty good. Of course, no one can top Green Day, but these guys are talented and put their own spin on it. You might have to like a true country voice and country instruments to enjoy this, but maybe it will be something new and amazing for people who are already Green Day fans and don't think of themselves as country fans... Idk, to each his or her own.

2. Itunes...what the heck? - Okay, so frankly I'm not a fan of bluegrass in general, but a lot of these are a little interesting. But Itunes- half, no, MORE than half of the song titles are mixed up! She is Brainstew, Brainstew is She, Know Your Enemy is Hitchin' a Ride, and Hitchin' a Ride is Know Your Enemy! This album is a creative take on Green Day's beautiful music, but all the titles are so messed up, I wouldn't even CONSIDER buying it!

1. So much energy and fun! - I’ve been a big Wood and Wire fan since their first album years ago. And I percent mean it when I say this is my favorite album. I love every single song. I really enjoy uptempo fast bluegrass music and this does not disappoint at all. But that’s not all, the slower songs break up the rhythm of the album so well. And the songs have so much feeling and imagery they may give you chills. The production on this album is top notch. They do not mess around when it comes to quality recording. Buy this album if you love banjo, very moving rhythms/lyrics, and original vocals you won’t hear from any other voice in the genre.

1. Progressive Bluegrass for the win - Punch Brothers are perhaps the most talented musicians in the progressive bluegrass circuit, in my opinion. Odd harmonies, expert picking, and haunting melodies make this album truly great. Chris Thile plays with the technique of any classically trained musician. Their songs have little bits of classical spice, but with a current feel. All of these musicians deserve applause, so I applaud you. Lovely, Lovely.

2. I wish I could get my money back! Worst bluegrass ever! - I looked at a bluegrass site that listed this as one of the top ten albums for and thought what the heck I'll give it a shot. What a bad mistake. This is by far the worst purchase I've ever made. It's more like some new age jazz crap that just happens to have a banjo. If you like traditional bluegrass then give this one a wide berth!

3. Saw the Punch Brothers in concert... - Absolutely loved it. When I see the crap that passes for music these days, overproduced and unable to sing without an aoutotune, and then i see musicians like this...it makes me appreciate great music from all genres. Keep it up Chris. I look forward to seeing you live again. g

4. (excerpt from Seth Horan's Best of ) - It must be rough being as chiseled and statuesque as Chris Thile. Apparently, the man has so many women throwing themselves at him on a day-to-day basis that he will never be the well-adjusted gentleman he seems to yearn to be in his songs. Punch Brothers established themselves a few years ago as the new purveyors of progressive new-grass, featuring five young lions who kick the crap out of their instruments while simultaneously nailing thick, wicked harmony vocals through endless changes of key and tempo. Their debut album was breathtaking, and was mostly arranged as one suite separated into movements… all to tell the epic tale of Thile’s divorce. The stark (but awesome) poetry was amazing, but the whole thing was a bit self-indulgent, and it flew over the heads of most. Fast forward, and what used to be “the guy from Nickel Creek’s new band” is now recognized on its own merit. Not only that, but it is a band being produced by the legendary Jon Brion. So look out, baby: “Antifogmatic” is the sound of five virtuosi who have been playing together long enough to become musically telepathic, and these songs sound organic and inspired. Even cooler, they sound inspired not only by Thile… there are new elements to the band’s sound all over the place (one tune in particular slapped me in the face with a cool homage to Mike Marshall’s “Gator Strut”), and I’m guessing those have been contributed by the ensemble’s other worthy members. It’s not even fair to stamp their main genre as “bluegrass”, or even “newgrass” anymore… this is a progressive pop album that just so happens to have been recorded with traditional bluegrass instruments, and they give as many nods to electronic music as they do to hyperspeed flatpicking. …but yeah; the songs are still almost entirely about girls, and about Thile’s apparent inability to have a committed and stable relationship. That’s not a bad thing, as it’s not something you wouldn’t expect from a group of five strapping lads with a penchant for boot-stompin’. Thile may be a ladies’ man, but he did warn us about it long ago. So we can’t complain.

5. Kickass Bluegrass - I heard these guys on NPR and was enamored from the get-go. I mean, the album name alone kind of had me sold, especially when they explained its origins. Then I downloaded their album and saw that they did a live Fiona Apple cover. Double thumbs up. I'm not a bluegrass lover by any means, but these guys are fun to listen to no matter what you're into.

6. From Live to Album - I saw the Punch Brothers live literally less than two hours ago, and they really do knock your socks off. I don't think that I have ever heard bluegrass music before tonight, and it's not twangy like some people might believe. This album is really enjoyable, and I especially enjoy the videos of them singing live. With live, you get to hear the wonderful vocal combinations that aren't as evident in the recorded music. Alex is one of my favorite songs from them, though the chorus doesn't create the same chills recorded as it does live, is still mystical and enchanting.

7. One of the Greatest Bands [insert qualifier here] - This is the rd album from one of the greatest bands... in America? The World? Ever? It would be hard to say too much about a group of virtuosos who craft music that's not only complex, interesting, technically brilliant, and experimental, but that's also cool and with lyrics you can sing along to. They're the Radiohead of Bluegrass, but they're not a bluegrass band (anymore). I'd call them prog-grass, if prog rock weren't so irrelevant for so many people. They can play with the best of them, sing songs that break your heart and open your imagination, and they do some of the best covers you'll ever hear. If you don't have Antifogmatic, and Punch, and How to Grow a Woman from the Ground, you're missing out on some of the best music you'll ever hear.

8. Solid Stars - Five Stars for me is a very small universe. It is reserved for Albums defined by excellence and timelessness. They are albums that in their day are ground breaking and over time stand the test of those that follow. This is one. This is the type of album that will influence and challenge. Educating a listeners ear and inspiring other artists new and old. The Punch Brothers challenge their listeners with songs that combine amazing playing, solid songwriting, beautiful harmonies along with sometimes purposely atonal segues that could be jarring and distracting, but instead fit and give the songs new and deeper meaning . They are not only pushing the boundaries of their music, but also their instruments. Like Hendicks with the guitar (without the lighter fluid) and Miles with the trumpet. They are redefining not just the music played, but how it is played and what the instruments can do. I discovered The Punch Brothers last year through a random collection of coincidental events that all pointed me toward checking them out. I liked and was challenged by their prior album 'Punch'. I felt I had a sense of what they were trying to do, but the album didn't fully capture the band that I saw live on stage. I was blown away with their live performance. I can only liken it to the feeling I felt from my first Springsteen concert in '. It was a high wire act where you know that the performance holds nothing back and is constantly pushing the boundaries. Philippe Petit didn't just walk arrows the tightrope between the Twin Towers. He did it times, for minutes. He embraced the risk, drew strength from it and even though his goal was accomplished, he continued to push himself further and further. Thus is the experience of The Punch Brothers live. They throw themselves and their instruments at their music. They do it with abandon and yet in a way that feels intimate and inclusive of their audience. Many performers need to create a wall and isolate themselves to focus in a performance. You don't feel that with The Punch Brothers. You feel part of it all. You feel part of something that only exists at that moment in time and is special. That is where the magic really happens. That is the true magic of a live performance when you are lucky. You feel you are part of their musical and personal journey. They are on an evolutionary process that has lead them to their new album 'ANTIFOGMATIC'. With 'ANTIFOGMATIC' they have managed to both continue to push the boundaries of their music further while at the same time making it more accessible. To pull this off with out compromising almost always fails. I think the success of their latest effort has so much to do with where the band members have come from and why they all signed up for the ride. Their music continues to defy categorization and yet there is clearly a signature that is emerging connecting it all. It is truly an Album, a collection of songs that belong together. Something that is far too rare these days. There is no filler here. The opening song 'You Are' sets the mark and the train leaves the station and takes you through a rich array of canvases on which they paint their music. 'Alex' is a personal favorite of mine. It gently builds, adding layers from an almost inaudible second intro, into a song that is so simple and yet so rich with style. 'Missy' could be be the sleeper song of the Album. This song has such a deep soul to its narrative and form. 'Next to the Trash' highlights the wit, whimsy and intelligence that pervades their songs. The closing number 'This is the Song' could easily be the anthem of our time. Somber and haunting. This is the type of Album people used to make when people thought of Albums as a complete work and radio played Album cuts, not singles. The songs are present in the best form possible for the song vs. packaged for radio. It is is a brave move. Clearly a conscious move and one I think they will be recognized for. The production on the album is perfect. It is produced and mixed with such care that it is invisible. Letting the music truly stand on its own. Keeping true to the Bands acoustic nature and producing a work of art that demands your attention. This is a not an album designed for causal listening. It is not designed for the lowest common denominator of a car stereo speaker. This is one of those rare albums that makes you glad you still own a stereo with full range speakers. It ranges from gentle, barely audible passages to jolting in your face jams. It is the first album in years that makes me glad I still own a turntable as you know that this is a work where that the unrestricted range of analog will be explored. (and yes it is being released on Vinyl) The Punch Brothers are genre bending. Breaking through the structural limits of traditional Bluegrass and exploring what it can be from combining rich elements of Classical, Jazz and Rock. They are exploring what they can be as musicians and what they can create as a group, with the whole truly being greater than its parts. The result is feels like Coldplay meets Bluegrass with a dose of Radiohead, XTC and J. S. Bach thrown in. Individually their background is steeped in Bluegrass and Folk but their influences are range the gambit. It is an exciting Journey they are taking and I am enjoying them including their audience on the ride. I hope you hop on and check them out too. I can't wait to see (and hear) where they take us next. Check out 'ANTIFOGMATIC' and get out to see them live.

9. Great album - esp. good tracks are Missy, This is a Song, and Rye Whiskey - Have to check out the videos to see the boys make all this great sound with their own ten hands without redubs or do-overs. Band chemistry is fun to watch. If you like this album, go back at get How to Grow a Woman, released under the artist Chris Thile, but is basically the same band - although with a different bass player.

10. Oh boy! - This album is, in a word, phenomenal. I would expect nothing less from Mr. Thile and his crew of virtuosos. The machine-gun banjo on Alex blew me away, and I would be hesitant to believe it wsn't processed if I hadn't heard it live back in Februrary. For me, this is an album that will be on repeat for the indefinite future. (Also, if you get the chance to see them live, please do yourself a favor and check it out. Both shows I've seen were mind-blowing, and the Februrary show I mentioned was well worth the four-hour drive I made to see it.)

11. Saw them play / of this album live... - ...and they were amazing. Not only are they talented musicians, but they have such a playful sense about their music; while they take their craft quite seriously, their genius comes so easily that they can afford to not take the entire situation too seriously. The Radiohead cover is genius. My only complaint (and it's a really minor one) is that their cover of The Strokes' "Reptilia," which was amazing live, is not on this album. But what's here is phenomenal.

12. Now This is Real Music... - Just when I was losing faith in American music, along comes Chris Thile and these guys. This is the kind of genre-bending music I crave for, and "Antifogmatic" is certainly an accessible album for all music lovers. This group has said in interviews that this album is going more for a rock feel, which is noticeable (they love to cover Radiohead, and for good reason). This album is much better for those who might hasve been frustrated with some of the aspects of "Punch". Songs like "Alex" and "This is the Song" are just plain gorgeous. I hope to see them live today. That would top off an amazing listening experience I get each time I listen to this record:)

13. Antifogmatic - This is a great album and you should buy it. It's got everything, for those poor souls who couldn't wrap their heads around the greatness of "Punch" (the bands first album) this album offers you a selection of awesome tunes that you can just turn on and listen to, but it also shows you the great talent and musicianship that you can really dig in to, that the Punch Brothers always bring to the table. Every song sounds great and could easily be the best song one the album if it wasnt for all the other songs. Just buy it and enjoy you cant go wrong.

14. great album - this album is amazing. the musicianship displayed by all of the members of the band is great. all of the amazingness of chris thile is there but in a more mass appealing style (in comparison to punch) great band, great album, and well worth getting the deluxe version for the extra tunes and videos.

15. Awesome album - Just what you'd expect from five of the most virtuosic, creative guys in progressive bluegrass (or whatever you wanna call it). A lot more quirky personality and dynamic range here than in 'Punch!', though I can't quite say that anything here comes close to the large-scale craft and continuity of 'blind leaving the blind'. If you haven't heard this band before, this is a more accessible album than the last, but with equally nifty cross-stylization of folk/bluegrass/contemporary chamber music. The Deluxe version is well worth the extra few bucks (um... brandenburg? awesome). Enjoy, and if you haven't caught 'em live– they'll knock your socks off.

1. Punch Brothers can do NO wrong! - I recently saw them perform in Ithaca... With one mic... And it was sheer perfection. They performed songs from this EP which I hadn't listened to at that time, but I was definitely intrigued. I'm always fascinated with the simplicity and complexity of their music. "In Wonder" is my favorite song off this album. So beautifully arranged and the vocals mesh so well. If you haven't seen them live, it truly is a treat. They are gracious as gracious as any group could be.

2. Always blowing my mind - Punch Brothers is absolutely rocking my world right now. How they continue to churn out such thought-provoking and mind-bending new music time and time again is beyond me. The Wireless is a great EP that builds on The Phosphorescent Blues in some powerful ways. I know some people would prefer more by-the-numbers bluegrass from a band with such talented musicians, but I find their experimental and questioning posture extremely refreshing. It’s rare to find a band that will make music that makes me smile, think, wonder, and shake my head in amazement while soaking up such wonderful melodies.

3. Nice EP - I received this in the mail two days before it came out and I'm writing this review after listening to it multiple times. All of the songs are very musically tight and showcase amazing talent. Some might complain that this EP lacks a strong defining track like Rye Whiskey from Antifogmatic, or Movement and Location from WFYN?, or Julep from Phosphorescent Blues. This isn't a just a new Punch Brothers album, this is made up solely of songs from the Phosphorescent recording sessions that were good enough to make make this EP, but were unable to fit onto the album. That shows how talented Punch Brothers truly are. IF you compare this to any other thing Punch Brothers have produced, compare it to Ahoy. Although, in contrast to Ahoy with only one song fully written by Punch Brothers, every song but Clementing is written by them. Sleek White Baby was also written with the incredibly talented Gabriel Kahane who traveled with the band on their tour. It is very nice to have new material from this great band, and The Wireless is a very strong half hour of music

1. Really liked what I bought! - I didn't buy the whole album but what I bought I loved. I've heard Carrie's album and it's great, but bluegrass is a slightly diferent genre and these songs are easy to listen. You're listening to the instrumental version of Carrie's CD. If you want, buy Carrie's album first, but this is a great recording and it stands by itself.

2. I Didn't Buy...I Just Feel Bad - There is only one out of the three reviews on this album that is actually talking ABOUT the album. Were not comparing this to Carrie Underwoods album, its a TRIBUTE to her music, and another take on it. This is not mean't to downplay Carnival Ride, but just take it further. Don't leave comments and low ratings just becasue its not Carrie Underwood, this is someones hard work and effort, and its a great album if its what your looking for.
