1. Bluegrass Growth - So after seeing some videos of Billy - totally impressed-had to purchase some of his work- he is growing - deep bluegrass roots provide a strong foundation. Truly appreciate his journey & his music. Look forward to seeing him perform a show. Personal notion is that his own confidence and humility will pave his success. Watching his performance with String Cheese Incident says a lot. Also seeing his rig stage set up on YouTube. So glad to see true musicians navigate through their career and find success. Billy is no doubt on such a journey- long winded I apologize- purchase this album- you will not be disappointed.

2. Fantastic talent...but - I’m not a bluegrass fan at all but recently happened upon a Billy Strings video. I immediately started searching for more of his stuff and am blown away. However, I agree with another poster that this album doesn’t convey Billy Strings’ sheer energy and ability. Don’t get me wrong, it’s REALLY good but doesn’t give me the goosebumps his live videos did. Still, absolutely worth the price and I will be buying more. This kid is amazing.

3. Great music - Even if you don’t like bluesgrass, but you do enjoy art and country and an old school kind of band that makes real new old school music vibes, you’ll love this. If you are a fan of Good old fashioned music, this will rock. Perfect to listen to on a cruise through the country, cruise trips to go to any kind of outdoor activities or have a fire or go camping and enjoy some good old fashioned, but new music, real musical art, you will love and need this album.

1. I think I actually like them better now! - They have always been a great bluegrass band and I think I like them better after Chris Stapleton went solo. Not taking anything away from Chris. I own all of his albums too. This album and the Muscle Shoals one are, imho, the best of their catalog. Again, I enjoy them all and the distance between them isn’t much.

1. Fifty years later... - …and there's still nobody who can rival the Dillards. This is their first, a collection of brilliant coffee-house-and-student-union hits. "Dooley" is here and so is "Old Man at the Mill" -- a pretty hip bluegrass tune for its time. And of course "Duelin' Banjo": long before "Deliverance", Dean Webb and Doug Dillard made it the electrifying centerpiece of a truly entertaining folk-club performance. The line-up on this collection is pretty much what you got when you saw them live. A half-century has passed, and now of the originals only Rodney is still active, and he's still the brains of the outfit.

1. Unfortunate... - Love your music!!! I'm a life time listener of bluegrass music and I hate that I'm late to the fan club. My only complaint is the F bombs, especially on "windshield." I love the song, but I had to delete that one track and I hated to do it, but I can't allow my kids to hear that and run the risk of them repeating it. I believe that "windshield," could be just as good a song without it and I don't like the fact that it's not listed as "explicit." Keep up the great work/ songwriting, maybe just avoid the F word.

2. Would Have Purchased…But - I’ve been a fan of bluegrass and have played both guitar and banjo for aver years, but I’ve never heard language in ANY bluegrass music so unneeded as that in the first few bars of the first demo track re: not being able to see out the windshield. So, this is one album I won’t be buying. Sorry guys, you can do better

3. Great addition to your collection - Another great piece of work from the boys in Greensky Bluegrass! You might expect a let down from a band that has already released some classic jams but this just adds to their repertoire of fantastic lyrics and spectacular musicianship. I don't often buy bluegrass studio recordings because the bands are usually better live, but these guys never disappoint whether in studio or live. Truly inspiring work!

4. Masterful!!!!! - Beautifully crafted lyrics. Amazing musicianship. This band is so amazingly progressive. They have taken an old time sound and made it relevant again using uncommon effects and well timed improvisation. My favorites so far are "In Control" (love the harmonies between Paul and Mike), "Windshield", "Burn Them" and "Leap Year". For the best listening experience, find a nice long country road on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Press play, turn the volume up and drive until the music stops, then turn around and hit play again. You won't be disappointed, I guarantee it.

1. SCC Bluegrass - I was thrilled to stumble on to this gem while looking through new Christian and Gospel releases on iTunes. As a fan of not only Steven Curtis Chapman’s voice and songwriting, but also of bluegrass music, this album was a wonderful find. There is a great mix of new songs and old, with some fabulous guest vocalists (including some family members), adding a nice variety. This collection of songs is at once both pleasant and listenable yet fresh and interesting. I will be enjoying and singing along for years to come. Thank you, Steven. This album is much appreciated!

2. Dive - Well now, if this song doesn’t make ya wanna get up and do a jig, I don’t know what does!
It’s fun! The lyrics reminds us Jesus followers of our great adventure. Ricky and Steven have unique spiritual art forms that are simple outstanding gifts from God. Thank you, guys, for sharing your blessed gifts with us! You never disappoint! Thank you, brothers!

Can’t wait for more Real Country Music from these two great people!!!!!!

3. Love this album - I absolutely love this album. The song selection, harmony and steel guitar make this one of the best I have heard in a long time. We need more traditional country and I thank Rhonda and Daryl for bringing it to us. I really hope this album sells well to let artists and country radio know that we love this type music. Let's get behind this excellent work

4. Music, good music - Now this is country music. Wow, seems so long ago that we as a lover's of country music have waited. The blends of voices and harmonies take me back to when my father introduced both myself and siblings to country music. Very happy with this album. Hoping that other "country" music musicians take a listen and try it.

5. Amazing! - The album is pure joy to listen to. Two of the greatest voices in country music join together to make an absolutely wonderful album. Great new takes on old standard country songs work very well, without straying too far from the original versions. Radio will never plaly it because it isn't bro-country by ANY stretch of the imagination, which is just too sad. Buy this album or stream it, you will not be disappointed.

6. Blended is Better - Hearing these voices blended together singing traditional country music is better than anything on "country" radio today. I have always enjoyed listening to Rhonda and I remember when Darryl burst onto the scene way when. Money well spent on this project as was when Rhonda got together with Gene Watson. Enjoy the harmonies cause you can't beat this pair!!!

7. Technically and stylistically the best country duo ever. - My high expectations for this team of traditional country's best male and female singers was exceeded to a degree that I fear cannot be adequately described in words. I love me some Rhonda and have for years and more recently discovered Daryl as the voice I wish I had been born with. His range, confidence and style is maximized in what I am hearing now. They have sounded wonderful on previous recordings and in person. I pre-ordered and can now hear "One." The arrangement, mix and blend is, to my ear, a new standard for a male and female traditional country act. The harmony flows much like the legendary Louvin Brothers duets in the late 's that are cited as instinctive and taking advantage of the range and strength of each voice at just the perfect moment and notes. I anxiously await the release of the rest of this historic venture.

1. Dusters FTW! - Over the years, the stringdusters have perfected a brand of modern bluegrass that is true to their deep tradition roots and that also manages to stay interesting to all types of different fans. They are really at their best live and this album is as close to that as it gets in a mastered studio record. These songs stay conversational and fresh and perfectly capture the sound of the acoustic instruments and voices. Great instrumental work from all, great tunes, and warm harmonies from the entire group make this album one you should definitely check out.

2. This IS Fresh - Dear jepjoker,
I have never written a review or commented on Amazon, but I just had to reply to you when I saw your comment. PLEASE do your research before posting negative comments like this. It would be one thing if you were just being hateful, going around giving artists star (because you must know it affects their average rating), but you actually don't know what you're talking about. This is NOT THE JOHN MAYER SONG. So, no you did not hear it years ago. Next time you project your negativy on an artist, please do your research first.

1. Best instrumental I have heard in a long while - Being an owner of the original I hesitated purchasing the same recording however it is not the same it is a masterpiece in its own right I would advise any lover of Bluegrass to buy this lp it does justice to the traditions of bluegrass and does it in a new way it is amazing just as the original is

2. Impressive tribute - Attentive to the details of the original, fresh with new takes, and supported by great sidemen, this recording is most enjoyable, especially for those who have studied Baker’s masterpiece. Pikelny is an amazing, sometimes breathtaking technician. He does not alway get the pop, ring, and syncopation that a more traditional bluegrass banjoist does, but that is in part a result of the fiddle-style arrangements he has chosen with their lack of open string and fifth string pedal points and the unique percussive nature of the banjo generally. Like Bela Fleck, his advanced playing sometimes sound “plinky.” There are so many new interesting sounds that it’s hard to dwell on this criticism, though. It’s fun to listen to the album and then go back to Baker’s and savor the genius of the tunes themselves as well as the obvious love and respect that the musicians on both albums have for this music and its creator, Bill Monroe.

3. An Instant Classic - Finest Bluegrass - Noam Pikelny's tribute to the best of traditional bluegrass is a brilliant, exciting album that is enjoyable listening throughout. It's always interesting when a great artist decides to re-create an existing work. It opens up our understanding of both the original and the new version. One is aware that - like the new expression of the piece - the original was also created out of multiple decisions of what to do and how to do it. Listening to "Kenny Baker plays Bill Monroe" and comparing track to track with Noam Pikelny's new recording is a fascinating and expanding experience. We can think about how Baker assigned parts, just as Pikelny had to: after the banjo takes the fiddle part, what do you do with the banjo part? what does the fiddle do, etc. And that leads back to the arranging Kenny Baker did. Of course, then there's Bill Monroe's original. But I digress. Backed up by Stuart Duncan, Ronnie McCoury, Bryan Sutton, and Mike Bub, Noam has re-imagined Kenny Baker's original album while being true to its roots. It has the same tracks, in the same order, but with the banjo taking Kenny's fiddle parts. Noam - and the other excellent musicians - skillfully blend their five instruments to reiterate and further explore the theme and progressions in Bill Monroe's tunes. Gabe Witcher produced, brilliantly. It's creative, highly musical, and fun to listen to. Noam's best album to date - they just keep getting better!

1. I honestly like this album very much - The last couple of albums by the Steep Canyon Rangers just didn’t resonate with me like albums of the past. I honestly still think that “Nobody Knows You” is still the best modern bluegrass album but this one is done very well too. “Going Midwest” is probably one of the best tracks on this gem.

1. These guys were meant to sing together - Their voices MADE JD Crowe and the New South for the one self-titled album. (I strongly recommend that one as well.) I love how they are literally the only two musicians on this album. I like Ricky on his own. I LOVE Tony on his own (I'm a guitarist.). But the two of them harmonizing is AMAZING. I noticed one person gave the album a one star review. That person was probably encouraged by a friend to give the album a listen, and just really isn't into bluegrass. It's a lot like jazz: "you get it, or you don't."

1. How sweet it was - This album summarizes the Bill Monroe experience pretty well. Cuts from live shows, where you get a feel for how they'd start and end a performance. Fast, high, lonesome, and the roots of bluegrass. This album gets me thru long roadtrips and recommend it to anyone who wants to get exposed to ole Bill and the traditional bluegrass sound.

1. Overdue praise - Simply put, I am surprised to be the first to rate this classic. Yes, classic for its genre of bluegrass collaborations between NGDB and fellow travelers in folk music. While no longer full of the break thru genre busting surprises of Circle Vol. (how could anything do THAT!) this is a most satisfying addition. Comforting, fun, and well produced addition to anyone's collection that loves the Circle series.

1. The Gibson Brothers- They Called It Music - The bluegrass five-man band produced a passionate and adorning album that is clear yet pleasing to listen to. With tracks to appreciate, the album ranges from a variety of favorable pieces. "Songbird's Song" is a beautifully constructed piece on the album that portrays a bittersweet melody. Other tracks, such as, "Dusty Old World" and "Sundown and Sorrow" show the brilliant range of talent the band possesses.

2. Song Bird's Song - Eric and Leigh Gibson have opened up their hearts wide with They Called It Music (Compass Records, ), an exquisite album of aching songs recorded at the end of , less than a year after the death of their father. The charging intuitive ensemble rings with lump-in-your-throat truths and Gibson trademark harmonies. The recording and mixing of the album make me feel like I am standing in the middle of the band: Barber’s gut bucket-like thrumphh and humm propel through any song stream–rocky and rough or glassy smooth; Eric’s fully twanged Deering make the slide-roll-pinch patterns sound like the Eureka moment of the old-time two to three-finger Scruggs conversion; Walsh’s atmospheric tremolo, spiked chords, provocative rhythms and wrought iron fills are a meaty ballet; Clayton tames the four-string fretless beast drawing lines above and below the band like a sky writing calligrapher; and Leigh prepares the guitar parts omakase with a mixture of Henderson Brazilian dreadnought, mahagony Martin double-ought, and Gibson archtop into an un-crackable block. Buy a Ring, Find a Preacher crosses the start line first. It’s a rumble of a song with duet singing bumper-to-bumper that reminds me of Gillian Welch’s storied songwriting. They Called it Music romanticizes an earlier era in old-time, country and bluegrass when it wasn’t as divided by genre and obsessed with corporate earnings. The Gibson combination of fine songwriting, gutsy dedicated band members, and some of the finest instruments around challenge the notion that the best of times are past and gone. But the song’s moral sticks: cherish the old as you create anew. Enter Joe Newberry, Master Jedi of making the new sound old. The Darker the Night the Better I See is a vintage vehicle custom made for the IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year nominee. Leigh drives it by just under the town speed limit. In Dying for Someone to Live For, Ms Loretta Lynn and Mr Shawn Camp draw ably from the gospels of A.P., Hank and their many roadside Baptist and Bluesy seers. Loneliness, weeping willow, and whippoorwill are woven with Leigh and Eric’s almost continuous harmony into the first of several tissue grabbing songs. I’ll Work it Out presents the central theme to everything Gibson: Work! I see Eric and Leigh sharing Something Comin’ to Me with their mom and dad. The song’s poignancy comes, in part, from knowing their father died months before it was written. As a Gibson Brothers fan wrote on Facebook, “I flat out love this song.” I’m with you brother. Mark Knopfler’s Daddy’s Gone to Knoxville is St Louis Ragtime floated through the honky-tonks of Tennessee and pulled ashore in the Faubourg Marigny of New Orleans by the brothers five. Joe Walsh leads off the quintet”s swing through this gumbo of regional American stylings. Leigh jumps from melody on verse to the tenor part on the chorus of Dusty Old World, an Eric Gibson original yearning for answers to questions of our reason for being. There are few things like listening to the Gibson Brothers sacred song harmony. On Home on the River Eric and Leigh’s shared musical DNA synergistically combines into the elusive “third voice,” a harmonic rising above lead and tenor. I Will Always Cross Your Mind brings comfort to the bereaved with its signs that our loved ones gone home never leave us. Sundown and Sorrow features one of my favorite words in the Gibson lexicon, “sorrow,” with its emphasis on the first syllable (“SOAR-oh”). Songbird’s Song is a profound yet simply put denouement. Deeply evocative, it is a lyrical recitative of a phoenix rising. The wailing falsettos cry out as they lift each other up, bound by musicianship, steeped in emotion, and transcendent of genre.

1. Bad mix - This album could have been very good if it were mixed correctly. The singers sound like they are under a blanket and the instruments are near the mic. I wanted to like this album but I just can't stand the lack of clarity and the pronounced instruments. Instruments are supposed to compliment the singers, not overpower them.

1. A classic fusion of musical influences - Who else but Sam Bush can bring together such a wide range of musical influences into an album as seamless as this. Yes, is it predominantly bluegrass instrumentation, but the songwriting transcends simple mountain themes, and the playing far surpasses that of your granddad's bluegrass band. Great lyrics, great performances, and everything you'd hope and expect from Sam. Give it a listen!

1. More than likely to be harshly judged - This album is subject to harsh ridicule. I liked it, but most people either don’t like Buffett or are serious Parrotheads not much in between. I like it because I really like Bluegrass and I like bluegrass covers of good songs. The only issue is some of the arrangements make it drift towards being common elevator quality.

1. Evolving Leaps - Sierra's evolution as a musician, songwriter, and singer continues with amazing results. What is truly remarkable is how she makes her "conservatory" education work for her. She is the master of how her talent, skills, and education evolve. The audacity to step out like this and challenge the listener to grow with her is a rare treat in a world of comfort and convenience. Coherence between the listener and the music may take time, but the journey to the coherence is the best part. I hope her evolution continues as Sierra continues to make new music.

2. Sierra--so amazing - The last time I saw Sierra perform she ended the night with the song "Father Time" and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Here it has a little more production but the elegance of the song still shines through. Worth the price of admission! All the other songs are a delightful bonus.

3. Chris Thile level of mandolinship but... - Sierra has what I would call “genius hands” which I only equate with Chris Thile ( in clarity of notes and style of play). I am a huge fan of Sierra’s and there are a few good ones on this album, but the rest seem almost “too advanced” to be enjoyable to listen to. While it’s amazing that she can play this style, the songs are hard to follow and feel a little jumbled with little melody. It would be great to see her put out an album with a similar feel to Nickel Creek as her mandolin skill could really power a whole album. But who am I to judge...

4. Sierra contines to grow... - How can this woman get better?
Yet she does, and here is the proof.
As she pushes the bluegrass music boundaries, she also puches herself to become better, and more rounded.
Her concerts with Bass player Ethan Jodziewicz, then with saxaphonist Eddie Barbash were simply excellent. Backing her was husband Justin Moses...

1. Dr. - It gets no better than Tony's flatpicking I saw them at a bluegrass festival and it was Tony, Bella, Sam B. Jerry Douglas and The Mark O'Connor. They loved what they were doing and often didn't know if they would make enough to buy gasoline to the next concert. I noticed the difference between the Bluegrass Festival video and the songs on the album. Of course they could lay down tracks, re-dos, etc that are not possible at a Bluegrass Festival. I have songs on my iPhone and got charged $ to listen to it on my PC, why does iTunes do that ? I have already purchased the song. I won't be buying any more songs fron iTunes, that is for sure....

1. The Full Sets/Sessions - Despite the officla review, this collection does include the wonderful "The Hobo Song" - it is the second track . Some sogs are included more than once because this is the full band output captured live at two different shows. Another standout song, "Land of the Navajo." Bluegrass purists might not think of Garcia s close to Earl Scruggs or others, but the banjo fits the group and the songs and tunes. An excellent, excellent collection.

1. Before they were SUPER Stars! - Ricky Skaggs was years old when he picked the mandolin with Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs on the Martha White Show, already displaying more talent than most of his adult contemporaries. Just prior to that Ricky and Whitley met while competing in a Bluegrass contest and became close friends.
At the age of they worked together in an opening act for Ralph Stanley, playing older Stanley Bros. songs.
From there they joined Ralph's Clinch Mountain Boys, and toured with J.D. Crowe and The New South.

1. Dear Sister - Claire Lynch offers a whole new outlook on what the bluegrass genre is capable of. Rather than just narrating, she offers lyrical details, and she is clever passionate, careful and deep in every single aspect of her music. She combines these unique melodies rhythms, and instrumental parts, into a masterpiece that portrays her artist voice to a tee. Catchier songs on the album are "Doin Time," "I'll Be Alright Tomorrow," and "How Many Moons." In "Need Someone," the bass doesn't come in until the second chorus which allows for the listener to pay careful attention to the story and the lyrics. The title track "Dear Sister," tells a tale of longing for home and loved ones. If I had to choose, I would say that my favorite song on the album is "That Kind Of Love." This particular song describes what kind of love everybody is capable of, and it is a very powerful concept. Every single lyric on this album was carefully thought out, and there isn't one "filler" song or any lines that aren't necessary. Overall, I think this is one of the must-have bluegrass albums of this year.

2. Claire Lynch-Dear Sister - Claire Lynch's album, "Dear Sister" contains ten tracks that exasperates a sense of meaning and comfort that draws you in to her music. Her soft and pleasant tones are satisfying on all accounts. Songs such as, "That Kind of Love" and "Need Someone" reveal her ability to share her vulnerability with her audience and creates a strong connection between the listener and her music. Light hearted tracks such as "How Many Moons" and "I'll Be Alright Tomorrow" provides a catchy, memorable tune that are pleasant to listen to every time.

1. Super talented group - I have known these guys for years, watched them since basically their first practice. I have seen them grow over a lot of years. This album shows the growth and talent this band possesses. When Pete Townsend tells you he loves it, then that is enough for me. Very talented group, that is finally getting recognition they deserve.

2. Addictive sound, Top-notch Musicians - The Hillbenders are finally getting the press coverage and kudos they deserve. Pete Townshend even called The Hillbenders after he heard this album because he loved it so much. If you were a fan of the original Tommy, you'll fall in love all over again. If you're a Hillbenders fan first, you'll find that the beautiful production value on the album shows off all the sounds you find addictive at their live shows. If you've never been a fan, quit reading this review and just buy the dang album. I swear, it's worth every penny!

1. Very Good Introduction - I came to Bluegrass music from s and s Country music; that's my perspective. Bluegrass was country, yet different. I bought this album after thinking about Ricky Skaggs, one of my favorite s Country singers. He started in Bluegrass, soI gave this album a try. To my mind it is the best of the complilation album that I have listened to. There is a variety of Bluegrass instrumental sounds and voices, and that let me figure out what parts of Bluegrass I really like, and which ones are less exciting. I am no expert, so take this for what it's worth. I think this album is closer to hard Bluegrass than one would get with an introductory album such as O Brother Where Art Thou.

1. Steep Canyon Rangers - Deep in the Shade - The best effort to date by the Rangers. Really creative Bluegrass music. Just give a listen to "The Mountain's Gonna Sing" and "Have Mercy" and you will be hooked. Best bluegrass music since Flatt and Scruggs! All their other albums are great, but they outdid themselves. If you get a chance, see them live on their own or with Steve Martin. They put on a great show!

1. Outstanding as usual!!! - This album is pure genius for the gospel bluegrass lover. Ralph Stanley's voice brings you instantly to a simpler, and safer place. Every time I hear him I am reminded of playing music with my family, and listening to my late grandfather singing his heart out. God bless Ralph Stanley for this beautiful album, and all the years of musical perfection.

1. Something for everybody! - Michael Cleveland has to be the greatest fiddle player in the world and the new guys in Flamekeeper really bring great vocals and musical ability to the band. This album features songs that range from classic Bluegrass/Country to originals written by some of the band members and even a Julien Lennon song, all done masterfully! In my honest opinion, this is one of the best Michael Cleveland albums to date! A definite BUY!
