1. A Well Deserved Stars! - The album Violator is a sensational masterpiece that also manages to withstand the test of time. The beautifully haunting melodies combined with the dark and mysterious songwriting makes it an unforgettable record of the ’s. The evolution of Depeche Mode is incredible, and for me Violator is the pinnacle of their work.

2. iTunes Editor's Notes - The album? A out of . DM is greatest. band. ever. But really? I just wanted to tell you to read the iTunes Editor's Note. I'm on the floor! Freaking hilarious!!! Either my guy BFF wrote that or I have a male twin in an alternate universe. ....Or? DM addicts all are the same. Here it is mid- and I'm ready to call Dave and Martin up and tell them to get off their swank couches in NY and LA and go make MORE MUSIC!!! (Yep. Saw them in what. ? But NOTHING beats Violator.....) XOXOXO

3. 's/'s gap bridged seamlessly via "Violator" - DM has its third consecutive uber-album in "Violator". No filler songs - just one outstanding tune after another. Their greatest leap in terms of both technological and lyrical achievement, and one of the greatest tours in music history (saw them with Nitzer Ebb that summer in Chicago; it was a night I'll never forget). I particularly like the rhapsodic "Clean" and portentous "Policy of Truth". Also love the addition of "Dangerous" and the stomping instrumental "Kaleid" to the re-master. By the way, pleeeeeease do not plug this one into your car's USB port. Enjoy it at home with absolutely no background noise...and CRANKED.

4. Earning the "Halo" - Violator is one of three albums (Black Celebration & Music for the Masses are the others) where Depeche Mode was at the peak of its creative power. Alan Wilder's arrangements give perfect form to Martin's songs and Dave's singing. "Halo" and "World in my Eyes" are real standouts. Really this is the final 'classic' DM album: Not too much guitar, and the "Sweetest Perfection" of Alan Wilder's talents. DM. Is a classic band that almost single handedly created electronic music as a genre. Violator is a landmark album.

5. This is a STEAL for $. - Violator is great CD by itself. Now that it has bonus tracks like Dangerous, Happiest Girl, and Sea of Sin, it's a MUST BUY! Even if you're only a passing DM fan, it's a must own! Hint...put on some headphones, turn out the lights, close your eyes, and play Waiting for the Night...Brilliant!

6. One of my top albums. - This album is brilliant. Depeche Mode is seen, or rather heard, at their best in this album. Every song is a pleasure for me to listen to and I don't dislike any of the songs on this album (which is rare for me). Overall, one of my favorite albums ever and my favorite song from it at the moment is Waiting for the Night, but it changes all of the time.

7. how can you miss?! - Not a bad song on the CD, all different, and all unique. I love DM, they were fresh and clean in the 's and the music holds up fantasically over time. You would be hard pressed to find a better synth group now. Violator on many lists of CDs you should have to make a real music lovers collection.

8. sweetest perfection - I had forgotten how great this album is, but it's virtually perfect from start to finish. One of those rare albums where EVERY song is great. Regardless of how you feel about synth-pop, club music or depeche mode in general, these are just incredibly well-written, catchy, melodic and intensely moving songs. You can't help but move when you hear these and they still hold up years later. Solid, strong, awesome - You can't go wrong with this album!

1. A Pure Pop Masterpiece - While this is undisputedly Vince Clarke's Depeche Mode, Martin still brought a lot fo dark edges to things that can be heard in "Puppets", "Photographic", and of course the one song on the album that he wrote, "Tora, Tora, Tora". The simple keyboard electronics combined with Dave Gahan's youthful exuberence defined the sound of an entire new movement. "Dreaming of Me' and "New Life" are infectious dance songs, and no song defines the era better than "Just Can't Get Enough". Thoe opening keyboard riff ha, and forever will be short-hand for all things fun and carefree in the s

1. A Decent Listen... - Definetly not the best by Echo and the Bunnymen. But not the worst either. I'm personally a huge Echo and the Bunnymen fan, but this album has just never clicked with me like the rest of their work in the s. The album almost seems too close to being New Wave, and the Bunnymen excel when they stay in their atmospheric Post-Punk style, which isn't as apparent in this album (even though it's still not considered New Wave.) Not the best of their's, but still worth the money. Recommended tracks: "Bedbugs and Ballyhoo" "Bombers Bay" "All My Life" Weird choices, I know, and the rest of the album is definetly worth a listen.

1. Flock Of Seagulls Questions!?!! - As a fomer New Wave fan (about a hundred years ago) I have to say that is actually a pretty tight collection. I mean, I would pick different songs for each artist- but who wouldn't ? . . . Actually , I have a question for anyone who has bought this...Is the veerion of I Ran the single version that starts with a cymbal crash, not the "new" version that has bird noises in the intro...thank you

2. Pretty Good.. - If you want a good list of hits from the s college party alternative scene, this is pretty good. All the bands are (were!) pretty mainstream but just edgy enough to fall into that corporate record label "alternative". Check out some of The Cure's earlier stuff if you want real hold-yourself-and-sob Gloom Punk...

1. This is Still Fire! - I discovered Ministry when they opened for Culture Club at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa, CA. Yep! It was a magical discovery. I was an instant fan. Then…well most know the rest. It’s too bad that Al hated (or hates) this record. It captured the best of the s, danceable, catchy, soulful, funky synth-Pop. It’s still fire!

2. talented… and so 's - went with the era but Al and Twitch left their mark without fitting into anyone's cookie cutter print, I loved/love it still like countless other Ministry fans did and I'm sure still do classic. As much as a ministry fan as i am some of their songs kinda scare me and I'm a serious GOTH/industrial music fan as i am.

3. Understandable - I get why one (as an artist) would be unhappy with this album, yet the classic lyrics, the feelings and the spirit that this collaboration created gave many a new way of looking at life, at the time it was released. The true essence of this music comes through regardless of the over polished attempt by music execs to control and dictate what they think they know or can sell. It is a keeper and I do hope the artists can appreciate some aspects gained through this experience because it truly changed my life and many of my friends at the time.

4. An Overlooked Gem - Whether Al likes it or not, this album and "Twitch" are outstanding, spirited, and original. Ministry plunged into the darkness and seemed to be overtaken by homogenized gloom later in their career. On this album and "Twitch," they balance darkness and light, sadness and joy, the coldness of machines and the warmth of human flesh. If only they had made more music along these lines. Fans of Human League, Depeche, Numan, and Heaven who haven't imbibed "With Sympathy" should buy this NOW.

5. To The Haters - It's quite clear to most of us that have a clue...that you have absolutely no concept of what makes a good song or album. This is why you will always be right where you are. Every album (including this one) that Ministry ever made is and always will be great! Open your mind idiots...there's a lot more to the world than what you know in your insignificant little & barely used brain. Not to mention the entirety of the universe. Stop thinking on such a small scale. "OPEN YOUR MINDS!"

6. Back In " - I remember being a freshman in college back in ' and hearing this album for the first time. The song "Work for Love" stands out the most to me because this guy who I thought was so avant garde and smooth introduce me to it. I can't tell you how wonderful it is to have this song. I know Ministry change its style later but this album and the music the band produced was so new and hot to me.. It just brings me back to those days filled with interesting people and the music they introduced me to. Call it New Wave, Underground whatever the name it was what I fell in love with and still a huge fan today. When you like something and really appreciate it, it will always have that impact and transcend time--it will remain timeless.

7. Faux English Accents Abound - I got into Ministry when they started to get a following in the NYC area when "Work for Love" started to get some air play back in the early s. I saw them in concert on the "WIth Sympathy" Tour on on Pier when they had the concert series there. I believe they opened for Squeeze or Haircut or some such, and it was actually quite good. This album was kind of unique in its sound at the time and it still kind of is. Drawing on synth-pop, funk and rock and kind of rolling it all up into something quite nice. The effected, faux English accent that Al Jourgenson put on throughout this album must be a lot to live down for someone who has worked so hard to be a hard guy since he moved on from this.I like "Work for Love" and its " extended version not on this album, "She's got a Cause" and "Effigy" are cool too.I like some of Ministry's harder offerings as well, but this one has a soft spot in my medula when I am yearning for sticky Icky synth pop of yore.
2010-10-22
8. The truth hurts - Jourgensen allegedly disavows this record, which is a shame, because it and "Twitch" represent the true high-water marks for Ministry. An excellent, entertaining slice of early-'s synth music that never really got any traction. "Revenge" is unquestionably one of the best songs of the time.
2010-01-08
9. Just a terriic New Wave.Synthpop Album - This is not the later Ministry, which became a little disappointing in their later directions. This is perhaps Synthpop and a reflection of early 's New Wave at it's finest. The production values are first rate, and the album has very few inferior tracks. It's danceable, the synth influences and Roland drum-kits of the period are clearly evident. As much of a cliche it might seem of New Wave of the period, it's also a fantastic example of a well-produced album that's still listenable and a must-have for anyone who wants a trip down memory-lane or who appreciates the genre. Fans of Jourgenson's later work, Ministry or otherwise, will find this a completely different direction, without thrash and yelling, and harmonic. In otherwords, if they liked recent Ministry and RevCo, they'll more than not fail to appreciate this.

1. Great - Pretty boy looks aside, they guys played their instruments, wrote their own music and really tore it up love. Simon’s lyrics are not bubble gum teen angst drivel. They are just the opposite. But he very clever to keep a hook and the chorus simple, but read any of the verses and you will actually be impressed and need to think. John Taylor is an incredibly underrated bass player. That Englishman can really lay down a serious bass groove. You can hear how Chic influenced his playing and style and why DD songs are infectious. Andy Taylor know when and where to let loose or when to sit back and help move the song along. Nick is a synth ane soundscaping genius. Simon adds the right touches in the songs. Rio, Girls on Film are obviously the big tunes on Rio but all the songs are very good. None are just fillers to fill up time. Saw this band a few years ago when the entire original line up regrouped. And I was blown away how great they are live. Never saw them in their s heyday, as I was more a rocker, but these blokes can do toe to toe with any rock band out there in a live situation. Amazing.

1. Devo is awesome - Devo is my favorite band of all time and it is a pain that there real only BIG hit was whip it. But sorry to break it to you. WHIP IT IS OVERRATED. THE SONG IS COMPLETE TRASH AND IT IS A WASTE OF DEVOS POTENTIAL. Buy some other devo songs. You will be surprised how catchy, humorous and cool these songs sound. Why don't you stop reading this review and check out OH NO ITS DEVO. It's a shame that turds from the 's only buy whip it and nothing else. I am from the 's and can actually appreciate not just from one song. Go check out some other devo and get a life.

2. Devo is Really Really Good - Just Buy It! - Wow, I forgot the musical impact these guys had on my life as a teen! I still have my yellow radiation protective suit and red pyramid hat somewhere. Brilliant marketing / music back then, and still very great today. These guys music is so unique and wavy (or punky) and cool, I still crank the tunes and rock out like it was brand new - as long as the kids aren't around.. Would have liked to see more tunes from their earlier and more raw albums, but this is GREAT STUFF! Finally something good out of Kent State...

1. A Transformational Album - I was born in . I was around when I saw Gary perform on SNL. I bought the vinyl record that week following. It was truly electrifying! There was NO ONE out there like him at the time. I played this to my beautiful year old daughter the other day ( wore out the original vinyl, years ago, good thing for digital). She was as blown away; as when I first heard it years prior ( yes we are old Gary :). This is way 'out of the box', and more than stands the test of time. Absolutely a classic!

2. A Perenial Gem - I bought this album in vinyl back in by a recommendation by a friend. It was a record that I would listen to and put on the shelf for a year and pull it back out and say "Wow! This is some good music. I must listen to it more." Then put back on the shelf for a year. Needless to say, I never wore it out so it always sounded fresh. This album is a timeless classic that is a must have in your collection.

3. Awesome s Album - I love this album. I bought this album for a few reasons. The first is that I remember liking the song "Cars" when I was a kid (born ). I also like the electronic/shoegaze style of music and some of my favorite musicians like Trent Reznor like Gary Numan. The music in this album is simple but entrancing. "Cars" is one of the more energetic tracks and great to rock out to. "Metal" and "Complex" round out my other two favorite tracks. The rest of the songs are pretty good. I definitely recommend those three songs, if not the entire album, to anyone who likes 's music, shoegaze, or electronic/synth rock.

4. Non-stop "Vox Humana" synthpop. Okay, I'm bored. - This is it, everyone. This album is a milestone in new wave and the music industry. This legendary album is the grandfather of the GARBAGE that consistently plays on Top radio years later! Sure, there are better new wave bands than Gary Numan (a.k.a. Tubeway Army) in it's first wave (late-s early-s). For example, Talking Heads, Blondie, The Ramones, and The Clash (despite being branded as punk). Something that really annoys me about this album is that it mainly uses the Polymoog "Vox Humana" preset throughout the album. Why not tweeking those knobs on the synth to get a more creative sound? No track really stands out in this album, except for "Cars" because it was Numan's one-hit wonder. The album itself is a dead drone. If there is only one decent track in this album, it would be the overlooked "Metal". And what makes this album so influential? Take a look at Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, new material from Britney Spears and The Black Eyed Peas, and all the other nonsense charting the Top today. Thank god synthpop was out in the s. Too bad it came back in the s. Scoring - A: ; A: ; A: ; A: ; A: ; B: ; B: ; B: ; B: ; B: /

5. What memories! - I was starting high school in Australia when Tubeway Army hit the charts with "Are Friends Electric?" I was hooked... and I'd sit in the stairwell halfway up to the dormitory (it was a boarding school) with my tinny little pocket radio, where it'd get the best reception, and soak it all in every time it was played on the Australian Top . Everyone else, of course, thought I was weird. Then "The Pleasure Principle" came out (or at least I discovered it), and it was the first music of any kind I ever bought on my own. A cassette that I wore out. I'll continue to wear this out. Great stuff, ahead of its time, different, original, timeless. (Ironically, I only came to find out Numan is an Aspie [Asperger's Syndrome] after discovering both my son and myself are Aspies many years later. 'Tis a kinship.) -- Buy this album.

6. "Cars" is a Classic, But The Novelty Wears Thin... - Most interesting is how the album mangaes to rock without the presence of guitars. Least interesting is that all the tracks sound the same and lack continuity, turning the listening experience into something of an amorphous drone. While nearly every keyboard-dominated musical genre with roots in the late s from New Wave to Industrial to Goth have attempted to appropriate "The Pleasure Principle" as an early masterpiece of their canon, the idea of what the album represents trumps what it actually is. Numan's processed vocals don't hide the limitations of his delivery; the same vocal melodies are found in nearly every track, adding further to their sense of inseperability. "Cars" is the song you know and probably the only one you need from this collection.

7. Now that is a deal!! - This is a great price to pay for this album, it realy is one of the first steps twords the wavy s and as the THINK_FISH soooo deeply put it maybe his best album that he ever put togeather with nothing but his pure heart and thought. Trust me great album, fun to listen to, and oh yea "CARS" one of the best ever put songs no itune cube is finished with out this hit been deeply intrenched in its data.
2008-03-11
8. Good News - In Gary Numan released this third studio album of his. With reaching on the UK charts, The Pleasure Principle is the kind of music that inspires modern day music. Tracks like M.e., Observer, and, Conversation are all great songs that lead up to Gary Numan's most popular hit: Cars. It is greatful we had artists like Gary Numan around to later inspire the bands of the future!
2008-02-12
9. ''The Pleasure Principle''... GARY NUMAN!!! - The best song in the history of recorded music is ''Cars''. From the opening drum fill to the closing faded synthesizer of the ''Moog'', '' Cars'' is the best. If Gary brought it back today it would be a hit, but people often overlook the rest of the album, there are some truly amazing tracks. Like ''Complex'', a single that made it to number on the UK charts! Then there is ''Films'' with a great drum beat and some cool synth. And finally, ''Metal'', a truly great and catchy song. People do not focus on the past, though, Gary's new stuff is even better! check out, ''Exile'', ''Pure'' and possibly Gary's best album to date, ''Jagged''. Good luck with your new album, Gary!

10. Layers upon layers of synth pop cake...YUMMY! - A VERY melodic and hypnotic effort by the venerable godfather of the genre...lots of gems in this one... and that doesn't even count the (SEVEN!!) extra tracks. The lyrics are Numan at his best; simultaneously very personal and isolationistic. Sometimes accuse of being unoriginal, here Numan blends the influences of his reading and music to yield a unique compote of freshly stewed angst and estrangement. The driving beat has influenced countless musicians in it's wake, and has been sampled and mimiced by Snoop Dogg as well as the Intel corporation. You have to admit that something is UP when you can count a no. hit, a gansta hip hop song and a computer commercial soundtrack as your legacy. Not without reason....absolutely worth every penny. So good I was happy to buy my rd copy in years, this time as a download. Thank you Mr. Webb. Thank you.

11. An Amazing Synthpop Release - "The Pleasure Principle" (named after one of Freud's psychoanalytic terms) is an amazing retro synthpop album. The AMG review says "there is not a single weak moment on the disc," ad it's absolutely correct. Some highlights are "Metal", about the fusion of man and machine, and "Cars", the endlessly catchy s hit.

1. We're monkey men all in business suits... - ...teachers and critics all dance the poot. Saw devo touring in support of this LP when I was in high school. Changed me for the better. The Brian Eno, Bowie, Conny Plank production & engineering on here is sublime. Listen to Mongoloid, Come Back Jonee, Gut Feeling, & Satisfaction through some big Klipsch speakers and a big McIntosh amp cranked up. That's pure apex predator real punk rock cut with golden age Eno sonic weirdness. To think Devo fought with these guys for creative control to the point of tossing out a lot of Eno's synth work is bewildering. Devo's refusing to push their sonic envelope and themselves speaks volumes to how their redneck Akron roots held them back from being sonic innovators they should have been and made every record they did after this one sound brittle and inorganic. Don't get me wrong, the next few LP's they did after this are fine but they devolved into a niche, wacky, robotic new wave act after this. They kept and improved on their excellent, angry scathing social commentary lyrics but after this LP it was social satire with robo-beats a frat boy could dance to instead of this unruly punk rock mutant basket case baby. If you're looking for an album that condones superior degeneracy and will tell you you are better than everyone else. If you see the universe as one sick dark joke. If you can help Devo with a donation of one dollar. If you'll pay to know what you think then this LP is for you. Buy or die pinks.

2. ... - If you don't really like this album that is totally ok. It is kinda random and nonsensical. Just because this album may not be your cup of tea check out some other albums from devo. Start with OH NO!, new traditionalists, freedom of choice then something for everybody. Then comeback to this album. The thing you have to understand about this album is that it is not supposed to sound good. It is supposed to be weird, bizarre, and kinda funny. Even though this might not be the best album LISTEN TO MONGOLOID, IT IS BY FARRR THE BEST SONG ON THIS ALBUM.

3. Terrible - Uncontrollable Urge is honestly the worst song I have ever heard in my life. It repeats the same TAXING PHRASE OVER AND OVER and really makes you want to hang yourself. I will never listen to this song willingly again and if I ever find it on the radio or any other form of broadcast media, I will blow my brains out.

1. Devo, got album for Christmas - Praying hand and mongoloid. And new wave bands went in late 's and early 's, for me, if they had some guitar mixed in the the synth sound, they all the better.and the extra live stuff is good tool " uncontrollable urge" is cool. Saw them live back in the day, oh my god, nothing better, thanks bro. you really turned me onto some some music and bands.

2. Classic Band, Great Songs - DEVO was, and I think still are, quite a phenomenon. They had a fairly amazing image, songs that sound fresh even today, and in retrospect a lot of songs that were "Social Commentary".The big thing was that along with the cool sound at that time, they irritated parents like crazy, as well as some Church "leaders". If WHIP IT can sound good, annoy parents( as it did) then its hardly subpar. They talked, in one interview, about being "enzymes in the corporate oil slick", and put on power hats ( or was it cones?).So, as for DEVOlution as they called it, they anticipated a lot of elements that became popular later. I know what you do, cos they do it too :-)

3. Are we not men? - This album is probably Devo's best. For a long time 'Oh No' was my favorite, but now I'm thinking their best is either this album, or Duty Now For The Future. Devo is definitely one of the greatest bands of all time, and I personally think they are the best not only for their music but also for their humor & videos, etc.

1. Excellent Album - Saying that DEVO is not a riff band or a catchy tune-smith band, in the regular sense, is going to get me in trouble with DEVO-tees. Some of their tunes like FREEDOM OF/FROM CHOICE is a key song where the message gets through, but not to everyone. Same deal with the subsequent hit BEAUTIFUL WORLD. Dance tracks they indeed are, but messages in a dance guise is what they seem to be.The tracks are not just dance tracks, in fact FREEDOM OF CHOICE is probably just as relevant today. Oh, am I ever sick and tired of finding DEVO under classic oldies. Perennial songs with a beat.

2. Girl You Want …….This - Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale, took notice of the Knack's current success with their New wave Beatle styled single "My Sharona and look what the cat choked up. This songs sends an aroma of ecstasy when sung in a car with people who have heard this gem for the first time. The giggle when they connect the dots. Then they start singing it out side the car and just about everywhere your hearing Girl You Want. Jeez the next thing you know you see girls sitting somewhere on top of the greenest trees.
One of Devos Best Song if not the very best Ill mud wrestle you to prove it.

3. Classic Devo Album..a must have - While "Whip it", "Girl U want" and prehaps title track are the best known songs from the album, those just scratch the surface of the other tracks. There is not a weak one here from start to finish. Don't be fooled by the SynthPop/New Wave feel of the songs as the lyrics have a stinging cynical social satire that will make you wonder if they were right all those years ago about how things were going to be. Don't hesitate, get this one and Q:Are we not men?..the two most important Devo albums. Get the rest if you are hooked.

4. A Classic Record gets it due - A few years back I wrote an iTunes review on the previous release of "Freedom of Choice". I'll give a quick, executive summary here: Amazing album, poor remastering for CD. Well, years after its release, Bugs Bunny has finally decided to give this the spit-shine it deserves. The highs are high, the bass, clean and defined, and the whole thing feels like what it was supposed to. How on Planet Earth did we get by with the garbage remastering job from the original CD release for so long, anyway? There's no looking back now, though. Heck, they even cleaned up the album art while they were at it! You can see the flags! I take a wee bit of issue with just slapping the DEV-O Live EP on as bonus tracks, as the expanded DEV-O Live is still in print, but I suppose they had to stick something on there. Still, what this poor spud wouldn't give for a remastered version of "Turn Around".

2. A great album marred by an incorrect version of "Snowball" and sloppy mastering. - The third studio album from Devo under their tenure with Warner Bros. Records striking a notable balance between acoustic instruments and electronics and notable for Devo's first hit single "Whip It." However, many other notable songs in this album include songs like "Snowball," "Planet Earth," "Cold War," and "Gates of Steel." Unfortunately, this is not an accurate reissue of the album as the version of "Snowball" in this album is not the one that originally was in the album when it debuted in . A bigger problem with this release, however, is the mastering of the tracks. Some tracks, notably "Whip It," are compressed to be louder than other tracks. Imagine the surprise you may get for listening to "It's Not Right" at a moderate to high volume when "Whip It" blares uncomfortably loud, making you rush for the volume control to turn it down, only to have to turn it back up when "Snowball" comes on. This is a great album that would have earned a five star rating had it not been for the inclusion of the wrong recording of "Snowball" and the horrid mastering, with some tracks being compressed to sound loud and others left alone. This release needs to be fixed to correct the issues, including a proper mastering that makes very restrained use of compression to preserve the dynamics of the original recordings collected in this album.

3. Almost Right - I bought this album on vinyl through a record club back in ' and loved every song on it. Of course, everyone was familiar with Whip It, but I never met anyone who knew any of the other tracks, me included. Anyway, it instantly clicked with me. This is pure early 's New Wave; true synthesized techno "geek" music; certainly not for most people, especially these days. If you cannot tolerate absolute weirdness, then stay far, far, far away from this. If, on the other hand, you are a fan of Devo and other odd-sounding acts like Gary Numan (Tubeway Army), Kraftwerk, Tourists (early Eurythmics), M-Factor, etc, then this is definitely the album for you! One tiny glitch that knocked it down from a star rating from me: iTunes has the wrong version of Snowball associated with this collection. The correct version (as released on vinyl in ) can be found on the deluxe remastered version, also available through iTunes. Not sure how this happened, but it's not any kind of a loss, as I simply bought the right version individually. All the other tracks are the originals. The slightly modified version of Snowball is just fine in its own right. I'm just picky about the authenticity of my memories. Don't monkey with perfection, no matter how flawed it may be. I might be the second to post a review, but at least this one should be useful to someone. :-P

1. Much better than portrayed - The idiotic main reviewer fails to mention songs like The Seventh Stranger and the (yes commercial) New Moon On Monday as sings that have aged tremendously well, specially when looked at against songs from their peers in . Yes, Reflex is a little too waywaywyayayaya but don’t mistake the boys having fun with being empty of creativity. It’s a great album.

2. The beginning of the end/Alex Sadkin vs. Colin Thurston - While an album with (today) nostalgic hits like “The Reflex”, “New Moon on Monday” and “Union of the Snake”, and a nice instrumental track in “Tiger Tiger”, this album clearly marks the beginning of the end for the band. Dropping producer Colin Thurston (who masterfully produced their guitar/bass infused new wave eponymous debut album “Duran Duran” as well as the smooth funky, bass guitar driven melodies of their mega hit second album “Rio”) the band chose to work with producer Alex Sadkin. The sound of this album overall was a more commercial sound which minimized John Taylors funky bass lines and Andy Taylors guitar, as heard in the first two albums for a more plasticky synth heavy sound. While successful, you can clearly hear the bands decline from their zenith just a year earlier. Indeed, by , the band would release their last hit together, “A View to a Kill” from the Bond film of the same name, after which, they would break up.

3. Poor Masterin on this version. Get the deluxe version - First the good.
If you had the LP or even the first run of CD;s back in the day this was a very good sounding and well produced album ... even if your not a fan. Why do some downloads sound like utter garbage...and sometimes better than the CD?.. I purchased this download before the deluxe version appeared in iTunes and feel totally cheated out of my $. or whatever...not the end of the world. The versions are noticeably different sounding. An older LP Vinyl might even sound better than either download if it's in good shape if you are into records.

1. US Hit Single version of HUNGRY... - Hungry Like The Wolf: The : version called "US Album Remix" is the edited remix that was re-released as a single in the US late in and became a big hit. The reissued Rio album, with the entire side remixed, included the full : remix ("Night Version") of Hungry Like The Wolf.

2. Classic Duran Duran - Duran Duran at their peak, only Seven and the Raged Tiger is more consistent. This was when DD were the darlings of the fledgling MTV and the bands videos were as cinematic and exciting as an Indiana Jones movie. The band had hit their stride as far as songwriting and musicianship and were instrumental in introducing the New Romantics/New Age sound to America. This album is enjoyable to listen to all the way through. Give it a listen. Great stuff. Vince Boston

3. Duran Duran still my fav band ever!!!! - Love “Rio” , to me it’s Duran’s best album. I love the different versions of the songs especially the U.S. remix and Carnival remix of “Hold Back The Rain” , my all time favorite song!!!This album is a classic, still great after all these years Duranie for life

1. BAD Volume problem - The samples sound a LOT better (higher volume and D punch) than the actual downloads I received. I hate having to adjust the volume way up when one of these songs comes on my player (and then having to adjust the volume back down after it's over). I've noticed this kind of problem a lot on iTunes the songs you buy should sound EXACTLY like the samples (especially the volume).

2. So their best album !!!!!!!! - I listen to erasure, pet shop boys, and devo those are my three faveorite bands I like pet shop boys for their extreme synth pop I like erasure for their songs just the sound makes me happy. But I like Devo for their incredible synthesizers incredible and bizarre sound oh no it's Devo is the best album Devo put out no band can top quirky stange extreme over the top sound the only with these sounds are the cars the buggles and Devo their music just makes me laugh :)

3. Oh No! It's Devo...Oh Yes! - This is the best Devo album ever! I have been a fan of theirs since the 's during my high school phase...I listened to a lot of their music during this time and let me tell ya...this was it folks- the peak of their career...the height of their talent...the high water mark...every song is a hit!

4. My favorite of the early Devo albums - Whoever reviewed this album for iTunes either doesn't have an ear for Devo or probably wasn't even born when this work came out. True, by , the entire music scene was thoroughly over-saturated with new and unusual acts, but that has nothing to do with Devo's greatness ( or weirdness) on this album. In fact, this album is a lot more melodic that their previous works. Songs like "That's Good", "Patterns", and "Deep Sleep" were definitely different from Devo's usual shotgun drums and cymbals routine. The promo tour for this album was great, too- I still have my potatoes T-shirt.

5. Good Album, Great Oldies - I'm not a fan of keeping things "naturally weird" and I deplore bumber stickers reading to that effect (e.g. Keep Austin Weird, Keep Portland Weird). They should read "I'm a hipster...didn't ya know?" This album has a ton more synth than previous Devo works, but Time Out for Fun, Peek A Boo, Out of Sync are all quality tunes that still sound different than % of all bands ever! The I-Tunes Review stinks.
2010-02-21
6. Album Review Review - I am disappointed in the i-Tune's Album Review. For those who believe, Whip-It is Devo's greatest achievement, this album is not going to impress. But they simply are not Devolved enough to understand. Tchaikovsky hated the fact that the Nutcracker, and Overture were so popular, as he considered these pieces inferior to his more serious work. Whip-It is Devo's Nutcracker. This album was the mainstay of their Tour, which featured the most original interactive performance between video, lights, and musicians I have ever seen. Speed Racer, Peek-a-Boo, and Big Mess are hilarious and musical at the same time. And their sound was not loosing its edge as the i-Tunes review suggests. Rather, the band was developing a more integrated and refined art form that still had the deliberately ambiguous metaphors & grainy graphics, but dipped with double and triple meaning. Devo’s most impressive trait is their satirical wit, which places themselves in the center of the absurd culture they parody. Devo has always exhibited a rare combination of self-deprecation and self-belief in their art. They don't really care what mainstream culture thinks of them, as they warp and reflect the absurdity of that culture back on itself. It is music for themselves and their fans, and they let it speak for itself without further explanation. Time Out for Fun, it’s just that simple…

1. Show of Strength - I love all Echo & the Bunnymen albums, but from beginning to end, this one stands out as a something truly powerful. As a fan of classic rock music, I can honestly say this album is comparable (if not even superior) to some of the best rock albums of the 's. This album goes beyond even the pure rock sound and delves deeper into the darker corners of the mind. Ironically, No Dark Things is one of my personal favorites on this album and is the perfect track to follow All My Colours. Try keeping up with its relentlessly fast paced drumming, its shredding and crashing of steel guitars, and the haunting vocals of Ian McCulloch, and your head will surely explode. Seeing how this is a deluxe version, however, save a couple of dollars and stick to the original release also found here on iTunes. There's absolutely no need for the extra tracks on this version.

2. Masterpiece of Mood & Space - Heaven Up Here is THE classic Bunnymen album, and one of the most essential records of the post-punk era. Often confused with terms like "New Wave" or "Indie", post-punk (-) was firstly (as the name implies), the next wave of bands that came after the Sex Pistols and punk rock. Yes, the punk rock revolution saved rock and roll by scouring the airwaves of disco and lame pop (I'm looking at you "Seasons In The Sun" and "Wildfire"). But the very element that gave punk it's power…simplicity, repetition, anger, and lack of musical talent, also limited it to a very short run. Post-punk bands loved the adrenaline and balls of their punk forebears, but they really were in it for the art and to celebrate the music they loved. Their songs and lyrics were mostly dark and sarcastic, but the songwriting itself was crafted and memorable, the production filled with imagination. The guitar work was usually angular and scratchy or woven like a spider's web with cool, rippling arpeggios bathed in reverb. The backbeat was strong and filled with unexpected time shifts and the bass guitar often acted as the lead guitar and source of the main melody lines. The main influences on these bands were the Velvet Underground, The Doors, David Bowie (as Ziggy), and Roxy Music, as well as the psychedelic bands of the late sixties. Heaven Up Here, along with Unknown Pleasures, Psychedelic Furs, Entertainment and Boy, were the foundation and blueprint for this musical movement, one which would eventually give us some of the biggest bands of the modern era: U, New Order, The Cure, The Smiths, The Pretenders, Talking Heads, The Cars, The Police and many more can all trace their roots, if not their own origins, to this fantastic and rejuvenating musical era. Back to the Bunnymen: Heaven Up Here eschewed the simple chord structure and midnight aura of their excellent debut record, Crocodiles, and instead…went darker. This album defined the Bunnymen sound, which is astoundingly personified by the front album cover photo. Yes, this album "sounds" like that photo: under a thick sky, bleeding blue, stand four dark mysterious figures, silently staring at the cold glassy merciless ocean before them. Inside this musical world, life is the most dangerous voyage, where nothing is offered, nothing is promised, except that it may yet get darker after the dawn. "Over The Wall", "A Promise", "Heaven Up Here" and especially "No Dark Things" take the adventurous listener down a glorious rabbit hole of sonic waves and macabre uncertainty. "My life's the disease, that can always change, just given the chance" from the ghost ship ballad "The Disease" sums up the main theme perfectly. But let me add one more thing: despite all the artsy-fartsy verbiage I just spewed, the most important reason to rush out and immediately buy or download Heaven Up Here…the album ROCKS. After years, this record stills sounds as fresh, challenging and dangerous as they day I first dropped my stylus on my shiny new vinyl. And it still rocks.

3. Ageless - This record Rocks. It rocks like Elvis Presly singing "Mystery Train." It rocks like the Stones "Gimme Shelter." As far as this being "Gothic?" No. You know what's the difference? It's not the music of self-defeating like so much of that genre. Again, this rocks. It rocks and roars back. You should to.

4. For The Discerning Fan, It's Their Best Album - This album by Echo & The Bunnymen is, IMO, their best. Perhaps not as "accessible" as the wonderful Ocean Rain but Heaven Up Here was a landmark album for its time and it holds up to today's musical standards remarkably well. Dark, moody looping basslines courtesy of Les Pattinson, phenomenal polyrhythmic and tribalesque drumming by Pete de Freitas, cutting, angular guitar chops by Will Sargeant and soaring vocals by a confident Ian McCullough makes this effort the jewel of their now extensive discography. It's hard for me to believe I have been listening to this album for years. For me, it has not lost one ounce of it's power and enjoyment. Echo & The Bunnymen were an exceptionally unique band and, rightly so, a subsequently influential band. They are in my all-time Top . Enjoy!

5. Tough to beat - One of the reviewers, tho complimentary, called this album 'classic goth disco'. Um...which album are ya listening to? 'Cos it's not this one. If I heard someone describe any album as 'goth disco', I shan't listen. Be careful fans! No disco here and you shan't find disco on any Echo album for that matter (thankfully). Other reviewers get it right... not an easy listen. But wow does it grow. This deserves to sit along side either of the Joy Division albums as THE quintessential post-punk album. I'm rather sad they departed from the sparse genius of this album (tho I love all the Echo albums). Will is brilliant, the underrated rhythm section is front and center throughout most of it, and Ian has found his voice, and oh what a voice it is. 'No Dark Things' is a forgotten gem. Enjoy.

6. One of my two favorite Echo albums - Look, one of the reviewers here suggests that this album sound too much like U/Bono. Echo was going for a much more pyschedelic sound. Reality check is that U's sound and style on their album Boy () and October () and War () was much different then the later U albums that all sound like the same guitar riffs over and over. Echo & the Bunnymen's Heaven Up Here () album is fairly dark and moody, but still with a clever smirk. All My Colors, Over the Wall are great. SO listen to U's October and compare The Heaven Up Here album which was also released in on vinyl and you will see there is little similarity in the sound of these two bands. I was there saw them live at the time they were new... totally different.

7. These songs will NOT leave you alone...even years later - I first listened to this album in college in the mid-s. It's surprising to read that Heaven Up Here gets the "experimental/not their best" type of ratings. This one, with no disregard at all to the other albums, really is their best. The characteristic guitar work that is so identifying of Echo & the Bunnymen is really starting to find itself in many songs, such as "With a Hip", "It Was a Pleasure", and "Turquoise Days". Just about every song has a very distinctive personality, and a strong and unforgettable one at that. There are no personal favorites here, as most of the songs can be rated at the top. This album is about the group finding it's true voice; the others are good, but this one has to be in the collection of every Echo fan. If you're not a fan yet, maybe let "Killing Moon" take you in, and then move in for maximum Echo.

8. One powerful album - As an early eighties album in a land full of dross Duran Duran style pap.... this was such a relief!! Yeah its dark, but the hooks are powerful and strong - and I will say much better than their later stuff from onwards.... Songs to Learn and Sing was their last album worth buying.
2007-12-29
9. Bunnymen's Best - Not for the casual fan. If you are starting out your collection, you may not want to start here. The highs and lows of this record document their own trip through recording a hazy, yet raucus recording process. Heaven Up Here is a testament to what can be done with a great producer and free reign to show sophmore slumps could be trumped in the Eighties. No Dark Things and Turquoise Days are less appoachable, but are gems. The title track and Over the Wall are songs that are unforgettable.
2007-11-30
10. Dark & Brilliant - This is not an easy album — it requires the listener to stretch spiritually. It harmonizes many opposites: the vocals are towering but oddly vulnerable. The lyrics are as random as a DADA poem, yet they are delivered with such pace & assurance, and with such an edgy backbeat, that they really form an haunting, exquisite overall effect. It will not be for everybody, but fellow travellers will recognize this ethos instantly. Nico meets The Cure meets the early Smiths. IMHO Echo & the Bunnymen's most compelling album.
2007-06-15
11. Pure Retro-Goth Club - This album is so great for Halloween if you're into classic goth disco. This album wasn't released in , it was originally a vinyl. For anyone who likes this, I reccomend you buy The Suicide Girls: Black Heart Retrospective at your local record store, it is an awesome compilation of goth club music with unreleased track and posters (one which feautures the LP version of Heaven Up There on it.)

1. Under appreciated, perhaps? - This album seems to get some stick because it’s not as tip-to-tail solid as Rio. An honest appraisal, though, points out that the highlights of Seven And The Ragged Tiger (The Reflex, Union Of The Snake, New Moon On Monday) equal their Rio counterparts and some other tracks (Of Crime And Passion, et al) are really underrated. Admittedly, this album may not be the absolute classic that is Rio, but it’s still a solid album in which Duran Duran were still at the top of their game.

1. Space Age Love Song - I am new to ITunes and wish I would have read some of the reviews of this song before I bought it. This is not the original song, the singer is off-key and flat, and it is just plain not good. If you enjoyed the soaring sounds (no pun intended), and the unique energy of the song from their first album, do not buy this. I gave it stars because it's just a step above dreadful.

2. i want a refund - Getting all psyched up to blast this in my car, from the first weirdly too bassy notes of "I ran" to the sped up tempo and odd, off, singers voice I knew something wasn't right. It doesn't even sound like the original singer, it sounds like a cover version. This is not the original. They need to state that in the notes. VERY disappointed.

3. Mike Scores new recordings - This the lead singers re-mixs, his versions anyway. I was disappointed however after hearing it, it remains new as if the band were still making music like in the 's. Anyways it is the original member so you have to accept it for...Anyway I bought the original Best of too. Itunes should give better information and include CD notes, original dates, and then of-course... more money. ok

4. JUST GET TRACK ONE!!! - Everything else.. is...well..disgusting. Anyway, Track one is also a re-recording, but I think they did a pretty good job on it. This whole album consists of re-recordings and remixes. I recommend not wasting your time and money here. There are really good AFOS albums full of originals out there. Take advantage of them before they are gone forever and we get stuck with just garbage like this.

5. Ehh ok - They like Remixed the sound of the songs on here. Buy a different album like We are the 's or something but this one- not good but A flock of seagulls rock I was dissapointed about the sounds of this. But anyways, if you like techno sounds buy this but if you dont and want the original buy something like "We are the ''s" or the platinum or the gold albums

6. I don't know what everyone's problem is, this album is great. - All of their other albums got excellient ratings, except for this one. First of all, the album cover is awesome. This band was one of the best New Wave bands ever. They are much better than this boy band screamo garbage that we hear today. It's ashame there isn't any good music around like there was in the 's and early 's... I hate to think was years ago. Time... why can't we be in the time we are most happiest in? Hmm... :( All the neon lights, no more of those today. The 's need to come back.
2008-04-07
7. bland and tasteless - Why on earth would you re-record a perfectly great song and water it down into light pop? Where is that cutting edge seagull sound? Electro and 's fans beware! This is not the same flock we grew up with. This comp sounds like somebody's OD'd on Prozac or something.I'm really irked because I just wasted $ on this mess.Steer clear of this disaster.Where are the preview snippets Apple? I'm getting tired of getting burned!

8. Interesting - I don't know what versions these are on this Flock compilation. They almost sound like demos. There are no versions that appear on albums on this release. I wish I knew more about this release. I'm not going to download any tracks till I can confirm what these versions actually are. For a Flock fan, if they are demos, I say go for it.

1. Oh yes the classic Duran Duran climax - This album captures the climax of the original five members hard work. A wonderfully crafted live album with the exception of the studio version of Wild Boys. The versions of The Chauffeur, New Religion & Save a Prayer rival the studio mixes from previous albums. Take a trip back in time, stand in line and sing along -- have your lighter ready.

1. Brilliance, I’m in synth heaven - I have just (re)-discovered this album after about years. I remember watching the video for Cars shortly after MTV was launched. I always thought it was a cool song, but never heard anything else from Gary Numan. I have been playing around trying to create that lush retro synth sound in Logic Pro, and Maschine. Happened to hear this album and have been loving it, Gary is the master. Several great songs (my personal favs: ME, Conversation, Random, Photograph, and of course Cars) and the rest are worth listening to also. This is synth heaven.

2. Fascinating demos, an album at the heart of the New Romantic era - This album will always fascinate me. It was, despite Gary Numan's distrust of the term, at the heart of the New Romantic movement going on in London, UK at the time. It was an idea extension of the wonderful and dark started on Gary's album 'Replicas'. The fact that 'Cars' was overplayed to death on the radio diminishing nothing here. In the original liner notes for the album Gary stated: "I'd like to give my special thanks to the band who turned basics into songs." With the demos provided with this two disc version of the album, at last we are able to hear those 'basics' upon which the band elaborated. There are some fascinating instrumental aspects in some of the demos that are unique and even heartfelt. I am floored by the piano dominated arrangement of the 'Complex' demo. It is a jewel. After hearing all the demos, it is fun to then return to the finished versions of the songs to appreciate just what the full band added to Gary's roughs. Again, 'Complex' is made all the more endearing, listening ever more closely to the beauty added by Billy Currie's playing. I'd so much enjoy Gary Numan returning in his 'old age' to the joyful experimentation, color and rich melodies evident here. This is a classic album of its time and for all time. Enjoy.

3. th Anniversary Edition just not worth the extra $ - When I was , no one spoke to me as much as Gary Numan. His music and lyrics meant more to me than any artists then, or since. Sure, he had lost me by the time Warriors () came out, but I'll never forget the impact his music had on me. The angst and alienation I was feeling was comforted by his music and I'll always be grateful for that. But this is a review of the th Anniversary Edition of The Pleasure Principle (that currently sells for $ more than the original edition). I can't say it's worth that extra $. In fact, I can't say it's worth anything more than the original at all. All of the demo versions, etc., sound pretty much identical to the final versions. There's no interesting alternate takes, or -track demos, or different arrangements or anything! And the additional tracks were not used for a reason. They're basically retreads of everything else on the album, and inferior. So, Gary Numan Good. The Pleasure Principle Good. Paying $ for this edition Bad.

4. Takin' me back... - I was in ' when I first heard Cars by Gary Numan; it was hard to get that catchy melody and hook out of my head. I wore my cassette tape out long ago playing the tape over and over in my Vega. years later this masterpiece still holds up, especially when listening to it digitally from my iPhone pumped through the speaker system on my Cadillac CTS. The remastered tracks, especially Metal, Engineers, Conversation, and of course Cars sound amazing, and rival anything being released today. Great value, great music and great memories now digitally remastered.

1. Wow. - Seriously, I remember seeing the Furs live many years ago and loving them. Their live show is nothing short of outstanding, but this album (which is the audio of the Live DVD recording at House of Blues) is one of my absolute favorites for driving music. I can't explain what it is really that draws me so much to their sound, but songs like Heartbreatk Beat, Heaven, Love My Way and Into You Like a Train strike a deep chord in those of my age, they speak of the confusion of our adolescence, they're anthemic and melodic, love songs but good solid rock/pop tunes and most of all spur memories of dancing with beautiful german girls in the clubs of Kaiserslautern! Absolutely recommended.

1. Original LP version of "Waiting for a Train" - Why isn't the original LP (album) version of "Waiting for a Train" available? Every version of the song is the single (radio) edit, not the version that clocked in at '" on the LP. What's the deal? Otherwise, all the other songs match the original album, but for some reason you just can't find the original version anywhere. Strange.

1. New Material Worth A Listen - Disguised as a compilation, this set features "I Started Something I couldn't Finish," a track recorded by the reunited (well, mostly) Bow Wow Wow in June of for inclusion on a proposed tribute album for The Smiths. You wouldn't know it, though - Annabella's vocals sound as fresh as they did in , and the production is spot on. One hopes that the new Bow Wow Wow album will soon be the light of day. If so, it is sure to be a welcome return of one of the 's favorite lost children.

2. The Tank is EMPTY - This band started with a brilliant first album and a handful of great videos before the ideas - both musically and visually - wound down (devolved to you put it their nomenclature). I remember buying this in junior high and after listening to the samples, it's more painful than I remember. If you want a album from these guys, then get Q: Are We Not Men? Then cherry pick the other albums. You should be able to find them here - they've been repackaging the same catalogue over and over for years.

1. Innovation - Pure raw expression! each song contains a journey interpreted through pure genius of sound, lyric, and purposeful rhythm. Most cannot comprehend the experience of Devo pre the Whip-It new wave era. Their ’s material is their best, it’s real and if your trying to figure it out then you never will.

1. Missing Persons: Ultimate Hits - Clearly not their ultimate hits nor worth the time. These versions are far from the arrangements of the originals and fall short in showcasing the talent of this under appreciated band. iTunes, please release Rhyme and Reason!!! By far, the best album by Missing Persons.

1. Great Album, Horrible Remaster - I think this is the best of the Psych Furs albums. I wore out my original vinyl version back in the day. However, the remaster is terrible. They seem to have followed the philosophy of almopt every remaster of s albums: make everything louder than everything else. You end up with a booming bass, shrill, piercing highs, and over-boosted midrange that just adds a lot of background noise. Go with the orginal master, also available on iTunes.

1. Must have! - This is extraordinary, even for The Necks. I’d call it their best recording to date. Once again, a slowly transforming trance-jam, but there’s more diversity of sound in this one than usual. If you’re even a casual fan, you need this. If you’re a new listener, this is a great place to start.

1. De-evolution is still relevant ... and cool! - Love the new single by DEVO ... and the mixes are certainly variations to speak to wider genre of tastes, or just creative explorations. "What We Do" is much more of a statement of purpose. Thank goodness they didn't title this the arcanely hollow and says-nothing phrase too often used today: "It Is What It Is"! Stay alive, DEVO!

1. A Live Charge... - One of the early New Wave's most accomplished musical outfits, Missing Persons began life, appropriately enough, as a live band. That said, 'Live from the Danger Zone' is yet another fine, live performance from one of the early New Wave's most accomplished musical outfits - a must-have pendant to the Warren Cuccurullo-produced 'Late Nights, Eary Days' of the mid-'s by way of four live tracks from the band's second album effort, 'Rhyme and Reason.' Considering the fact that members Terry Bozzio, and to some extent Cuccurullo, demanded take after take from lead vocalist (and Terry's wife) Dale, in order to bring greater depth to her quirky, professionally untrained vocal stye, 'Live from the Danger Zone' is a bone-fide winner as Dale does not miss a beat while reinterpreting those grueling studio sessions to an appreciative live audience. Indeed, the boot-camp tactics worked, and Dale and the boys sound simply fantastic, offering new twists to each song without sacrificing the essential elements. Dale Bozzio fought hard to procure this rare soundboard recording, and the effort is well worth it. 'Live from the Danger Zone' delivers the thrills.

1. Not Missing Persons... - Another money-grab by Cleopatra Records, and so carelessly put together that, though titled 'Missing Persons,' Dale Bozzio's covers of 'I Know What Boys Like,' 'Turning Japanese,' and 'Der Kommissar' are included nonetheless. The Rad's White Label Remix of 'Destination Unknown' is 'new' to me. Might be an unreleased track from Warren Cuccurullo's 'Missing Persons/Remixed Hits' CD from years back -- or, a more recent Cleopatra effort. Stop milking this great band's music. Let it be, and let us remember Missing Persons as they were.

2. Not bad, just not necessary. - They split up, reformed years later after Warren was cut from Duran Duran and split up again. This represents some of those brief months when they were reunited. songs were originally recorded by other artists and are covered here. "I Know What Boys Like" original by The Waitresses, "Turning Japanese" original by The Vapors and "Der Kommissar" by Falco. I believe that "Words" and "Destination Unknown" on this CD were re-recorded by themselves after their brief re-grouping. A nice listen, but not necessary.
