1. Extremely captivating - I am extremely impressed by how the author manages to make a book about cancer so captivating. Mukherjee describes the human journey of tackling cancer’s treatments, causes and potential cures through vivid stories of scientists, doctors, and advocates and their tireless pursuit of a cure.

2. Empowering - I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia in May of . My CML is under control. This book helped me deal with my initial shock and anxiety over being told that I have a blood cancer. It is difficult to read of the suffering endured by many over the centuries but immensely heartening to hear of the courage and triumph of many. If you have cancer or are sensitive, keep a tissue or handkerchief close and be prepared for a roller coaster of emotions. Read it to the end. You will not be sorry.

3. The Emperor of all Maladies - This biography of cancer was presented remarkably well. I was concerned that the subject matter would be rather complex and at times boring, but surprisingly encountered an exciting and gripping storyline. The scientific and medical discussions of various accounts of cancel occurrences were woven with such simplicity that the reader did not have to resort to a reference manual for explanations. I now have a much better understanding of cancel and since I tend to gravitate towards the optimistic side, I think cancer will surely be eradicated in all its forms.

4. Must read - This is a beautiful book about an ugly illness. Yes there is a lot of science but there is also a gripping plot that keeps you turning the page to find out what happens next. It is a particularly fascinating look at the men and women of science - how much major advances depend on the most minor and mundane forces: you like you co- workers, you didn't get enough sleep, there was a snowstorm. I highly recommend it for anyone whose life has been touched by cancer.

1. Checklist Manifesto - It is interesting to read about how the medical profession
recognized the value of the checklist and incorporated it's use
In surgery. I am aware that checklists can be a useful
quality control tool. The way the author presents how the
various disciplines use checklists and teamwork to support their
efforts makes for very interesting reading. This book gave
me a deeper appreciation of "surgical teams" and the
surgeons that lead them. It also left me wondering
if the use of another simple tool like the Pareto chart
has been considered for use in quantifying areas where
additional improvement can be made.

2. An Interesting Read - The author is a masterful storyteller. In this book he provides numerous stories and examples of how different professionals use checklists to prevent mistakes, handle crisis, and complete complicated projects. I would like the book better if he had introduced more practical tips for creating, managing and applying checklists earlier in the book. It seems like the best advice appeared in the second half of the book.

3. How good can a Checklist be? - Persuasive and compelling from start to finish, Gawande has written a gem. Who knew that checklists could be so interesting, or so important as an organizing principle to enable better professional performance? The singular achievement of this book is to convince you that checklists can (and should) apply to many more endeavors than just aviation's famous pre-flight checklist. Given the pedestrian ho-hum associations I had of checklists it's remarkable to be convinced of the radical improvements enabled by something so simple. Far from being robotic instructions that switch off thinking, a well implemented checklist empowers performance and innovation, especially in any complex undertaking. Gawande repeatedly illustrates the power of checklists by using case histories drawn from his own professional world (he's a practicing surgeon: wow, such interesting things happen in an operating room!). But he also draws from many other professional walks of life, everything from skyscraper construction to hedge fund analysis. Like only the best kind of non-fiction writing can do, Gawande's book doesn't just show you the data and pattern of a better idea, it promotes and enables insights as you read the book. I had many ah-ha! moments when I could connect the dots and see exactly how to profitably use checklists in my own work. Manifesto indeed!

1. All you need for Texas JP exam - Read this once in around hour. Passed the exam with room to spare. No other study, no practice questions, no prior knowledge of Texas law. It’s also genuinely a great idea to understand more about the legal framework - having thought the JP exam was a terrible idea I now think other states should implement something similar! Thanks to the author - a great public service!

2. Passed test - I read this book alongwith questions Texam Medial Jurisprudence Exam eReview and passed my test with % first attempt.
I read book few times, despite what author suggests for a day of studying! There are only attempts to pass the test and do not take it lightly but this combination is all you’ll need!

3. DON’T BUY IF YOU’RE A MASSAGE THERAPIST - This study guide was informative and pretty hilarious at times, though definitely not needed.
ALL MASSAGE THERAPISTS PLEASE READ
If you're coming from out of Texas and thinking you're getting a leg up by ordering this book, you'd be wrong. Learn from my mistake, you don't need any study guide or book. The "exam" is more of a formality. They give you links to ALL the answers you need. It's basically their way of ensuring you know the laws by paying into it. Save yourself $ and reading through pages of information you don't need to know.

4. Buy this - There are a lot of review materials out there that can cost x the price of this book. This is the best bang for your buck and for your time. I had to take my board certification exam the day after taking the TX JP exam, so I wanted my study efforts to be efficient but still pass. I read through the book once a couple days before the test and once just before the test, which totaled about hours. I got a - more than enough to pass (). The test is not just common sense - it is tricky and requires very specific knowledge. Honestly, I would have failed without this book. So definitely put in the effort. This book is all you need.

1. Fantastic - This book provides fantastic details about flaws in the American healthcare system. But more than that, it also offers solutions – both at a systemic level and for patients in the healthcare system. One of the neatest aspects of this book is the appendices, which provide a vast array of resources for healthcare consumers, including template letters to dispute overbilling.

1. I will read it again. - Dr. Dressler has given me hope and made me a more logical caretaker. When I first found out Brutus had a malignant MCT, I was very emotional. I felt hopeless and that somehow I had helped cause it. I wish I had read it before I started making decisions, as I may have saved some money and done things a little differently, but am just glad I found it. I know feel like I have some control over what happens next regardless of Brutus’ prognosis.

I don’t get to see the struggles they’ve developed and felt with long after. It depressing but eye opening for me. I especially appreciate the resources at the back of the book to help combat this problem this whole book is about: PICS (Post ICU syndrome)

1. Great - “You have to be smart enough to know how stupid you are.” Author embodies this in the best manner possible. You can tell he’s a empathetic, caring, and very intellectual man, yet instead of arrogance, it has bred humility, which is the greatest tool of the wise for it gives them discernment. Great book, awesome guy!

2. Need more stars - Very rarely have I come across a book with the depth, intelligence, human touch, humility and perspectives such as Complications has. I wish there would be special exception in the rating system for this kind of cases: I think Complications deserves stars. Gawande's insights into the medicine, doctors and patients will broaden your mind permanently.

1. Confuses - Purchased the book as I started in the OR during my clinical rotations for some last minute studying. I have the hard copy at home and was extremely excited for some of the features. So I made the purchase, waited for it to download.. and it tells me that I’m unable to open the book... I hope I didn’t just waste money on it.

2. It really works! - I had a toothache and remembered seeing this book. I was shocked at how simple the solution was - I was dreading the pain, risk of infection, and high price tag of the dentist, and am very grateful for the knowledge the author shares, and even more grateful that my tooth no longer hurts! I even subscribed to his newsletter. Seriously, this is already becoming one of the most impactful books I've ever read. I look at my health and the health of my teeth very different now. I've already recommended this book to about a dozen people.

1. Behind the Mask - This is a bare-bones frank account of a surgeon’s life on duty….worts and all. The physical toll on the doctor’s body and mind after perhaps an eighty hour week is immensely stressful and can impact the outcome of surgical success or unintentional mistakes. The surgeon lays it all out there with great pathos and accuracy.

2. Fascinating read but... - While this book is really useful as a peek into the future for the future OR staff, the author is too prone to long winded tangents. I found myself skipping pages and pages just to get back to the point. A good read for anyone who isn't annoyed by getting off topic repeatedly.

3. Confessions of a Ssurgeon - Excellent insight and spot-on in communicating the joys and frustrations of General Surgery. As a general surgeon, I have had each of these experiences and emotions (with the exception of throwing the EEA device...I have wanted to). It's nice to hear that I'm not alone. An important read for general surgeons, patients and also for anyone who knows (and especially for anyone who loves) a general surgeon.

4. We are fragile - Being reminded of our fragility would have been entertaining in my 's. In my 's it's actually a bit scary. This book also reminds us that we're not very complicated and the tools we (still) rely on are a best blunt. Regulations will eventually cause more deaths than it intends. Jim Gioiosa

5. Confessions of a Surgeon - In addition to interesting stories of his patients, the author explains clearly in detail some of the recent changes in the medical profession. Why your doctor might not take care of you in the hospital, but instead turn you over the care of a "hospitalist".
Why your doctor might decide not to accept patients on Medicare. Why the increasing regulations meant to reduce surgical errors are also complicating medical procedures unnecessarily. Why there may not be enough surgeons in a few years. Very clearly explained and food for thought.

6. Confessions of a Surgeon - This book is an honest look at the life of a surgeon and how modern healthcare policy affects the role of surgeons in healthcare. Sometimes the author comes across as whiney and inflexible to the paradigm shifts occurring in twenty first century medicine. Sometimes the author pines for the "good old days" where he could haze newbie surgeons in the same manner he was hazed by his superiors. These shortcomings aside, the book should be ready every pre-med student as they "count the cost" of training for a career as physicians and surgeons.

1. Wake Up Call - This book should be a wake up call for physicians and patients. Our healthcare system is like no other first world country. We are making it harder and harder for physicians to practice and care for patients while making it easier and easier for undertrained non-physicians to practice independently. If you found out your pilot wasn’t available, but the flight attendant who had taken some online courses and had watched the pilot fly for a few months was going to fly the plane, would you still get on? I bet the answer is no, but that’s exactly what we do every time we let a nurse practitioner or PA treat us. We need to take back control of our health and demand our leaders get us more doctors, not replace them with people who have less hands on training than a dog groomer at Petsmart.
