1. Melancholic review of a veteran - I am an almost five-year listener of this podcast. Five years already of the short life we have on this earth - except for the cockroaches of course, they live for ages. And trees. We cannot forget the trees. Anyhow, Welcome to Night Vale was the podcast that introduced me to audiodrama. For a time, it was the only one I listened to. When I discovered it, I listened everytime with wonder in my ears and amusement in my heart. What a wonderful welcome. After five years, I am sad to say I lost some of the joy I used to have listening to this podcast. It is still amusing, but I do not long for it the way I used to. I think there are two reasons for that. First, I am afraid I lost some of the innocence that is perhaps needed to fully enjoy this podcast. I have gotten so used to this strange world that I have become a bit numb for the wonderfullness of that strangeness. Second, I miss the longer story archs. I know it was a conscious choice of the creators not to do them anymore and instead focus on different members of the community, but I like to have my stories head for something, for an end of some sorts, and I feel that this is missing a bit in current Welcome to Night Vale. However, the multiple part episodes do add some purpose and I am very happy with them. I hope someone will find this useful. Probably not, this text is way too long for a quick recommendation and more of a thought-while-staring-dreamily-out-of-the-window kind of review, but who knows. The world is a strange place, and so is Night Vale.

The writing greatly improved over the three books, as did the narration. It’s unfortunate Pandemic wasn’t voiced by the author themselves, but the narrator did a more than excellent job at giving the story the body it needs.

2. Brilliant mystery - A brilliant and mysterious search into something mysterious with some more mystery. The first two season were amazing. Especially the diary-parts got my full attention. I had the feeling the story-arch was planned for two seasons and when they were a success the creators had to find a way to continue the story. Season three is not bad, but definitely not as compelling as the first two seasons. Halfway season four they seem to have picked up the pace again. I really hope I am right about that!
