1. Vliegje op de voorruit - Mart Smeets was vele jaren hét boegbeeld van de Nederlandse sportjournalistiek. Onaantastbaar op de televisie en ongenaakbaar als expert op het gebied van veel Amerikaanse sporten. Het zorgde zijn hele carrière voor bewondering, afgunst en controverse. In Amerika zou Smeets een held zijn geweest, een toonaangevende naam binnen de sportwereld. In Nederland is dat uiteraard stukken minder, hier doen we niet of nauwelijks aan heldenverering. Als je in ons kikkerlandje met je hoofd te lang boven het maaiveld uitkomt, kan je er op wachten dat je uiteindelijk aan de beurt komt. Smeets is echter onmiskenbaar een grootheid binnen zijn vakgebied. Daarnaast is hij in de loop der jaren ook uitgegroeid tot een enorme kenner en liefhebber van Amerika en dan met name van de sportieve, muzikale en historische iconen. Dat was altijd al te merken in veel van zijn documentaires, zijn boeken en zijn mediaoptredens. Zijn haat/liefde relatie met Amerika komt ijzersterk naar voren in het boek “Mijn Amerika”, waarin hij verteld over zijn vele reizen door het land dat op zoveel mensen een onweerstaanbare aantrekkingskracht heeft. Reizen voor Studio Sport en voor tijdschriften en dagbladen die hem op pad stuurden om ergens verslag van te doen. Maar ook reizen met zijn vrouw en/of zijn kinderen, welke hem langs ontelbare platenwinkels en boekhandels heeft gebracht. Smeets leerde Amerika kennen als een waanzinnig land met een prachtige historie, veel muzikale grootheden, onvoorstelbare sporthelden maar ook als een land met enorme tegenstrijdigheden en sociale misstanden. De verschillen tussen rijk en arm, de haat en nijd tussen blank en zwart. Het Amerika van Mart Smeets leunt nog op de grootheid en potentie uit het nabije verleden maar is inmiddels hard op weg om een derdewereldland te worden. Het mooiste van “Mijn Amerika” is de liefde van Mart Smeets voor boeken en muziek. Als een kind in een snoepwinkel loopt hij likkebaardend door de mooiste winkels van Amerika. Hele stapels boeken en cd’s gaan mee in de koffer en in alle hoofdstukken van dit boek doceert Smeets als een leraar de meest opzienbarende feiten die hij daarin ontdekt. Hij bezoekt vol bewondering een concert van Taj Mahal, de geweldige blueszanger uit New York en geeft geschiedenisles over de achtste president van Amerika, de oorspronkelijk uit Nederland afkomstige Martin van Buren. Hij verteld vol passie over de geschiedenis van Ben & Jerry’s en hun thuishaven Vermont en geeft les over de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog, de Mormonen, de Kennedy familie, de I van Salt Lake City naar Park City, de KKK en nog veel en veel meer. Hij bezoekt bekende en minder bekende hotels en restaurants en doet op meeslepende wijze verslag van veel van zijn ervaringen in Amerika en de vaak overweldigende schoonheid van de natuur. De passie en het enthousiasme spatten van het papier, samen met de verbijstering en soms zelfs het afschuw. Het boek is vooral eerlijk en het geeft niet alleen een beeld van het Amerika van de afgelopen veertig jaar, maar geeft tevens inzicht in de persoon van Mart Smeets. Op het scherm soms een autoritaire man die zich door niemand zichtbaar van zijn stuk laat brengen. In dit boek echter een mens van vlees en bloed die dankzij zijn enorme journalistieke kwaliteiten de kans heeft gekregen om zijn dromen te vervullen. Het sociale onrecht raakt hem zichtbaar en de kern en manier van denken van de meeste Amerikanen blijft in veel opzichten ook voor hem als Amerika kenner een compleet raadsel. Als lezer ben je een vliegje op de voorruit van de auto waarmee Smeets door Amerika reist. Je ziet alles door zijn ogen al laat hij het in de meeste gevallen aan jou over om er een eigen mening over te vormen. De geschiedenislessen zijn zeer interessant en goed geschreven en voor je het weet heb je het boek uitgelezen. Samen met Mart Smeets heb je duizenden kilometers afgelegd en ben je soms meer dan honderd jaar terug in de tijd gegaan in een poging het hedendaagse Amerika beter te begrijpen. Het land van de onbegrensde mogelijkheden, volgens ons Europeanen. Een land dat, volgens veel van de inwoners, vooral gaat om geld, ras en macht. In ieder geval een land van uitersten. Vooral dat laatste brengt Mart Smeets in het zeer aan te bevelen “Mijn Amerika” duidelijk voor het voetlicht.
